Why Did Leon Black Pay Jeffrey Epstein $50 Million?

[ZeroHedge] Billionaire Leon Black gave his longtime pal Jeffrey Epstein $50 million dollars after the deceased financier got out of prison for pedophilia.

The transfer of funds was made in at least two payments, one of which Deutsche Bank flagged as unusual, according to the New York Times, citing 'two people familiar with the matter.'

Epstein served as a director on the Leon Black Family Foundation for over a decade, and also accepted a $10 million donation for his Gratitude America foundation from Black's "BV70 LLC" charity.

"It is true that I paid Mr Epstein millions of dollars annually for his work," said Black in a Monday letter responding to the Times report. "It also is worth noting that all of Mr Epstein’s advice was vetted by leading auditors, law firms and other professional advisors" Black added - noting that he had 'once' picnicked on Epstein's private island with his family, and that he visited the dead pedophile 'from time to time' at his Manhattan townhouse.

Black's spokeswoman claims the two stopped communicating after a "fee dispute" in 2018, and that Black "deeply regrets having any involvement with him."

"There has never been an allegation by anyone, including The New York Times, that Mr Black engaged in any wrongdoing or inappropriate conduct," she added.

In August, US Virgin Islands attorney general Denise N. George notified a local court that she would issue civil subpoenas to Black, founder of Apollo Global Management, as well as several entities he's tied to. The subpoenas sought financial statements and tax returns - including those for Black Family Partners and Elysium Management - which oversee some of Black's $9 billion fortune.

Black and his entities paid millions in fees to Epstein's "Southern Trust Company," which he established in the Virgin Islands in 2013, according to the Times.

Other subpoenas will go to Apollo as well as entities that help manage Black's extensive art collection, according to an August report in the Times. It is unclear whether those subpoenas have been issued.

In a 2019 letter to Apollo investors, Black claimed to have had a "limited relationship" with Epstein (who managed his family's foundation), and was "completely unaware" of conduct claimed in new allegations against the pedophile.

$50 million seems like a lot for someone he had a "limited relationship" with, while it remains unclear exactly what services Epstein performed for such a princely sum. The question everyone wants - or needs - answered, is just why did one of Wall Street's all-powerful billionaires who is surrounded by the biggest financial brains in the world 24/7, pay an outsider for financial advice. We hope, but doubt, that Black will answer this question outside of a court of law.

Seven months pregnant woman, 22, dies along with her unborn daughter after her 'friend forcibly cut the baby from her womb
  • [Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Reagan Hancock, 22, was found dead at her home in New Boston, Texas, on Friday, by her mother

Joe Morgan passed on at 77
[Breitbart] Joe Morgan, the Hall of Fame second baseman who became the sparkplug of the Big Red Machine and the prototype for baseball’s artificial turf era, has died. He was 77.

He died at his home Sunday in Danville, California, family spokesman James Davis said in statement Monday. Morgan was suffering from a nerve condition, a form of polyneuropathy.

Morgan’s death marked the latest among major league greats this year: Whitey Ford, Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Tom Seaver and Al Kaline.

Morgan was a two-time NL Most Valuable Player, a 10-time All-Star and won five Gold Gloves. A 5-foot-7 dynamo known for flapping his left elbow at the plate, Little Joe could hit a home run, steal a base and disrupt any game with his daring.

Most of all, he completed Cincinnati’s two-time World Series championship team, driving a club featuring the likes of Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez to back-to-back titles.

Morgan’s tiebreaking single with two outs in the ninth inning of Game 7 in 1975 gave the Reds the crown in a classic matchup with Boston, and he spurred a four-game sweep of the Yankees the next season.

Morgan was the league’s MVP both years. And his Hall of Fame teammates and manager readily acknowledged he was the one that got it all started.

The smallest cog in the Big Red Machine was its most valuable piece, and easily a first-ballot pick for Cooperstown.

“He was just a good major league player when it didn’t mean anything,” former Reds and Tigers skipper Sparky Anderson once said. “But when it meant something, he was a Hall of Famer.”

Texas Republican who called COVID a 'scamdemic' organized family party that ended up killing his father-in-law, his partner's grandmother and leaving him close to death in hospital
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Tony Green, 43, from Dallas, threw the gathering for six people on June 13

  • Within days Green and his relatives began feeling poorly, he said in a Op-Ed

  • Weeks later the virus had 'torn up his family' after 14 of them fell ill and two died

  • Green said he himself became so ill he was eventually hospitalized with doctors

  • He was joined in the hospital by his father in law, Rafael Ceja, and his partner's grandmother; they both later died of the virus, Green confirmed
Statistically speaking, it had to happen to somebody.

#7  From NN2N1’s link:

my partner and I hosted family members on Saturday, June 13. On Sunday, June 14, I woke up sick.

By Monday, June 15, my partner and my parents were all sick. That same Monday, my in-laws traveled to witness the birth of their first grandchild. They took with them my father-in-law’s mother and one of my partner’s sisters. That night my father-in-law became ill. Then my mother-in-law and their daughter began feeling sick. So they cut their trip short.

Two days later, my father-in-law’s mother got sick. The new mommy and daddy got sick, too. We all tested positive for COVID-19. Only the newborn was spared.

The timing is not really emphasized in the Daily Mail article, but doesn’t the Rona have a two week incubation period? I would be interested to know if the entire family came down with the same strain, and if there had been any contact between various members in the two weeks before the dinner.

#8  but doesn’t the Rona have a two week incubation period?

According to Chinese July paper The incubation period of COVID-19, which is the time between exposure to the virus and symptom onset, is on average 5-6 days, but can be as long as 14 days.

According to wordometer incubation period of COVID-19 is 2 - 14 days.

Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 10/13/2020 8:53 Comments || Top||

#2  Are you really delusional enough to think Latin America is wealthy enough weather a lockdown, whether or not they wanted to perform one? Lockdowns are expensive. Quarantines are expensive. Latin America is largely extremely poor to moderately poor. Tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of death likely is "cheaper" to society than a lockdown in the situations of most third-world nations.
Posted by: Vernal Hatrick || 10/13/2020 13:22 Comments || Top||

#3  Vernal, your argument hinges on the assumption that recovered become immune. As I discussed before, this don't seems to be be the case for covid 19 (or any other coronavirus). Moreover, there seems to be long term debilitating effects to covid 19 - including in people who had a relatively easy bout of disease. So can Latin America adjust to a substantial fraction of the population being disabled at any given time? To all activities having a chance to cause being disabled or dead (much higher where then in US)?

"Atambayev has been detained and now a measure of restraint is being chosen for the ex-president", the headquarters said.

Atambayev was detained as part of a new criminal case into organizing mass riots, the republic’s National Security Committee said in response to an inquiry from the news agency 24.kg.

Prime suspect Motorway rape case Abid Malhi arrested from Faisalabad
The prime suspect in the motorway rape case has been arrested a month after being on the run from the police.

Abid Malhi is being taken to Lahore, the police said. He was arrested in Faisalabad. His accomplice, Shafqat, is already in police custody.

A woman was raped in front of her children by two unidentified men on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway on September 9. The case has rattled the country and reignited the debate on whether capital punishment should be fixed for rapists or not.

Entire police force of the province had been searching for him since he went into hiding and teams were busy in reconnaissance to find out his hiding place.

They said police also conducted several raids at residences of his relatives and close friends who had been in frequent contact with Abid.

Abid had escaped arrest on multiple occasions during police teams’ raids in Kasur, Sheikhhupura, Nankana Sahib and other areas of the province, sources further revealed.

Malhi’s DNA test had been obtained thrice from the motorway rape victim’s samples. However, his DNA test will be taken again and matched with the samples from the motorway rape victim’s before any formal proceedings against him are initiated.

The motorway rape case’s prime suspect had managed to evade arrest four times by escaping the clutches of the Punjab police ever since he has been on the run.

An anti-terrorism court sent the co-suspect in the motorway gang-rape case, Shafqat, to judicial lockup for 14 days and directed the jail authorities to hold his identification parade under special arrangements.

Narrating the horrific incident, the accused, Shafqat, told investigators that they were intoxicated at the time of the incident and initially planned to commit a robbery. Abid smashed the glasses of the vehicle and injured his hand in the process, he said adding that after looting the victim they decided to sexually assault her.

Haredi sector makes up over half of elderly virus patients in Israel
[YNet] - Over half of the elderly coronavirus patients in Israel hail from the ultra-Orthodox Jewish sector, almost four times their relative part in the population, the Health Ministry said Tuesday.

The ministry said 3,266 out of 6,061 current active elderly patients across the country, constituting 52%, are from the ultra-Orthodox sector. Of the 587 elderly patients who are currently in serious condition, 88 are ultra-Orthodox, making up 15%.
G*d told their top Rabbis to go for Herd Immunity. That is, either G*d doesn't understand immunology, or He doesn't actually talks to Haredi rabbis. I wonder what's the correct answer?
The ministry's latest virus figures also show a decline in contagion rate, which now stands at 7%. On Monday, of 47,136 tests conducted, 3,097 came back positive.
It was 13% before lockdown - good thing we know (been told by world-famous epidemiology/immunology experts) that lockdowns don't work. Otherwise I'd be tempted to calculate that, since false positive (approx) 5% and true possitive is (approx) 95%, we went from 9.8% infected to 2.2% after 3 weeks of (fairly loose) lockdown.

#3  Israel has infection per million rate about 50% greater than the US but a fatality per million rate about 60% lower than US.

I think this may be because of more aggressive pre hospital protocols and because the population is, on the average younger, and also possibly because the sunlight is stronger (more natural D).

Unmanned US 'spy ship' powered by solar energy and designed to avoid detection is found off the coast of Scotland
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • A £300,000 Wave Glider-style boat was found on the coast of Tiree, west Scotland

  • Wave Gliders are used by the US and British navies but it has not been claimed

  • But the Russian Navy developed a near-clone of the Wave Glider called Fugu in 2016

So, it could easily be Russian (Fugu), but we'll blame the US out of habit.

#4  Went to Boeing/Liquid Robotics links and the image is. a dead ringer for the surface portion of the Wave Glider. Location off Scotland can reflect marine fisheries research or that pesky submarine route into the Atlantic from northern climes.
Posted by: NoMoreBS || 10/13/2020 11:57 Comments || Top||

#5  Aside from fisheries research, it is frequent practice in the US Navy to station an attack submarine at a sub base 'sally point', to check whether passing boats are making new or excessive noise.
On this side of the pond, usually done at King's Bay, GA or Bangor, WA. But then, there's been multiple sightings of the Jimmy Carter (SSN23) up there, with the 'spec ops' sub at Faslane and at a couple of Norwegian bases, and the Norskes have reactivated a 'cave' base up north.
(The Carter is the last of the Seawolfs, stretched 100feet to accomidate seal stuff, amd Tomahawks and such.)

NBA Game 6 Finals - Now With Even Fewer Fans!
I think I watched about three minutes of the entire series. At least with the fuckin' Lakers winning # 17, it'll be with an asterisk.
[Zero Hedge] - The last game of the NBA Finals - arguably the most important game of any NBA season - posted ratings that were about 66% lower than last year's Game 6, according to Breitbart. It is the latest bad news in a stunning collapse in ratings for the league and, specifically, for the NBA Finals series this year.

For comparison, Sunday night's Seahawks versus Vikings regular season NFL game, featuring one team that hasn't won a game all year, had nearly twice the views of the game where LeBron James clinched his fourth NBA Championship, according to ShowBuzzDaily.

Recall, just days ago we noted that "Player Protests/Politics" were cited as a driving force as to why people were abandoning watching the NBA. In a recent poll on Yahoo Sports with 22,266 responses, people were asked why they thought the NBA's ratings had dropped off. Player protests/politics was the overwhelming favorite, at 61%, as to why people are turning away from the NBA.
Most of those people will turn away permanently. I'd love to have a bug in the NBA Commissioner's office - they're surely in full-blown panic mode right now.

#1  Yeah, but the big names still hauled in their millions and the entire league has a valuation in the billions. That can unfortunately go on for some time before they notice there are no fans.

#2  At some point (maybe it's happened already) the owners, not getting gate or concession revenue, are gonna put a lot of pressure on the league office. That's the immediate effect; when TV revenues take a hit, then it'll be a complete shitshow.

#19  It has been mentioned a number of times before, how someone at one location looking up something while internet shopping, an ad shows up on another device with a similar ad.

It is my belief, and I think with plenty of anecdotal evidence, that with the modern entertainment delivery devices, that those service (and any lamprey spies if you will) know exactly who is watching what, and said demographics and habits of who.

While that may be a ton of information, the spreadsheet, and therefore analysis, is relatively simple.

This Macromedia Data is therefore available, especially for those who want to cooperate or negotiate prices. For a $billion business structure to not at least pay attention, as a medical patient is hooked up to a number of sensors such as EKG, would be woefully ignorant.

They know.

The study of consumer habits is as auld as commerce itself; the modern example would be why grocery stores have milk and perishable on the far side of the store so consumers walk the aisle.

#20  Say I am a basketball fan, and huge fan of Bron making a mark in its history.

Say I miss a live game, and want to know why Bron walked off the court before the game was over, and I want to know why.

So I stream the game, maybe skipping the advertisements (noted by the matrix), and watch over whatever criteria counts as "watching the game".

That is all noted. Members can adjust accordingly; did so-and-so watch what commercials? Does their online activity match what our advertising strategy is? Whatever best matches the ultimate Supply vs. Demand perimeters necessary vs. a 1/3/5 year plan.

Remember this is a big 'B' $Billions on the line; tickets/advertising/(space balls voice) mechandising....consumer behavior.

'You don't belong here!' Brazilian immigrant wife of Pennsylvania's Lt. Governor is called the N-word in racist rant at grocery store
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Pennsylvania's second lady Gisele Barreto Fetterman, 38, was verbally attacked and called racist slurs at the grocery store on Sunday

  • She is a Brazilian immigrant and the wife of Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman

  • She entered the US illegally when she was seven, got her green card in 2004 and married John Fetterman in 2007

  • She was recognized at an Aldi store and a woman shouted at her: 'There’s that n-word that Fetterman married. You don’t belong here'

  • The woman also accosted her as Fetterman was in her car by calling her the n-word at her driver's side window

  • Fetterman broke down in tears and called her security detail for help

  • The incident is now under investigation by state troopers

God bless her. And her testimony of her great love of the US.

Side note: I know a family whose husband was American and wife a legal green card holder whose two children, a daughter who served in the Marine Corp, the son in the Army in Afghanistan and survived service in the deadly Taliban stronghold of Helmond Province as part of the ISAF forces before returning home. His Brazilian green card mother was his backbone through out his service to the United States of America.
