Europe
Polish soccer club charged over 'jihad' banner
Legia Warsaw has been charged by UEFA after its fans displayed an offensive banner before a Europa League game against Israel's Hapoel Tel Aviv. The Polish club's fans unfurled a green banner saying "Jihad Legia" in Arabic-style script across one end of the stadium on September 29.

UEFA rules prohibit acts of a "political, offensive or provocative nature" at matches. The European football authority says its disciplinary panel will review the case on November 17. UEFA has the power to order Legia to play future European competition matches in an empty stadium.

The teams will play again in Israel on December 15.

#1  Which reopens the old debate: were all the "Operation Reinhard" death camps established in Poland for geographical reasons or because Polish hatred of Jews made the murders more acceptable to a large populace of Jew-baiters.

#3  What a double standart - Israeli Hapoel's logo with hammer and sickle is offensive to all post-communist Eastern Europe. I do not recall any club in Europe siplaying svastikas in public.
Likewise Hapoel's fans displaying posters with comrade Stalin is a virtual slap in face for families of all victims as well...

Fifth Column
Anarchists Plan Attack On Chicago Hyatt Hotel
Anarchist groups, led by Lisa Fithian and working with Democrats and unions on the ground in Chicago, intend forcibly to disrupt the Mortgage Bankers’ Association meeting at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and other locations this afternoon.

Violence is possible, as local police and security officers seem unprepared for a confrontation with thousands of activists converging on the Hyatt from multiple other staged demonstrations in Chicago.

Fithian, a veteran anarchist organizer who is widely credited with shutting down the World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle in 1999, has apparently arrived in Chicago after participating in the #OccupyWallStreet demonstration in New York.

According to Big Government sources, Fithian is currently training union leaders from the Service Employees’ International Union and the Teamsters Union in preparation for today’s demonstration. Her strategy may be to draw law enforcement officers to multiple protest sites, then to shift demonstrations suddenly to one central site.

Democratic activists and leaders, including Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), are expected to address the demonstrators today as part of “Stand Up Chicago,” a broad coalition of community organizing groups coordinated by the SEIU and promoted by left-wing bloggers in the area.

The Chicago demonstration is the latest example of cooperation between anarchists, unions, and Democrats, who share an interest in targeting America’s free market system–some with the explicit intention of destroying it, others with the hope that the spectacle will help President Barack Obama’s re-election efforts by “inspir[ing] the progressive base.”

UPDATE: The Chicago Teachers’ Union has posted its plans for the demonstration, including training led by Lisa Fithian. Fithian’s apparent strategy, as anticipated, is to stage multiple demonstrations that will then converge on one location.

UPDATE 2: The convergence point appears to be the Art Institute of Chicago.

UPDATE 3: #OccupyChicago has posted detailed plans for the various events it has planned for today. The plans include a call for activists to “take matters into our own hands,” and describe training classes in “police confrontation.”

SEIU organizers from Kansas and Missouri are also on the scene. Anarchists have arrived wearing industrial masks underneath black handkerchiefs, in possible anticipation of tear gas and pepper spray.

#1  To misquote some dead German guy: "When I hear the words 'social justice', I reach for my pistol."
Posted by: SteveS || 10/10/2011 10:53 Comments || Top||

#2  You're thinking of Ernst Rahm Röhm.

The actual quote is "Wenn ich Kultur höre ... entsichere ich meinen Browning!" This translates as: "Whenever I hear [the word] 'culture'... I remove the safety from my Browning!"

(This quote is often mistakenly attributed to leading Nazi Hermann Goering, or occasionally to Julius Streicher. This misattribution may date from the famous Frank Capra documentaries (Why We Fight) shown to American troops before shipping out.

In fact, it is a line uttered by the character Thiemann in Act 1, Scene 1 of the play Schlageter, written by Hanns Johst. The association with Nazism is appropriate, as the play was first performed in April 1933, in honor of Hitler's birthday. At the time the word "Browning" was used to refer to any pistol).

#4  It is doubtful Ebbang. The words "culture" and "Obama" are quite distant, unless you punctuate the language with clicking sounds.

#5  Since Obama's maternal grandfather ("the furniture salesman") and his mother both seem to have been wholly owned properties of the CIA, I suspect that the intent with Obama was that he be a deep cover Cold Warrior, able to penetrate the Kremlin itself.

But "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Obama?" With the end of the Cold War, here is a man who can convince anyone that he is a hardcore leftist, with gold plated radical credentials. So why shouldn't the CIA have their own senator?

Among his committee assignments were the International Security subcommittee of Homeland Security and 5 subcommittees in Foreign Relations.

H.W. Bush had been DCIA and become president, so why not allow an agent to become POTUS?

#7  I really enjoy your posts moose.

Regarding OTUS and the CIA. Are we not all assets owned by someone. Are you not owned?

Now, regarding the OWS protestors, many were, I'm sure, on unemployment, so let us gladly shift the burden of their upkeep.

Though it is likely that the taxpayers pay for these people directly or indirectly whether they are unemployed, or acting for the parties and unions or the big corporations and investment firms they protest.

Maybe these protesters will realize after their short stint on Wall Street that they should be inside the buildings where a much larger portion of government money is divided amongst a much smaller group of goons.

Their educations surely were overpriced if they haven't learned that lesson by now though, har har.

India-Pakistan
Six years after quake: Shangla schools still in ruins
[Dawn] Six years after the devastating earthquake flattened most of the infrastructure facilities in Shangla district on Oct 8, 2005 only 30 of the 202 destroyed school buildings here could be rebuilt so far while around 15,000 students are still without educational facilities.
Let them eat cake and study at madrassahs.
When contacted, Executive District Officer (education) Abdullah told Dawn that the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (Erra) had miserably failed to reconstruct the destroyed schools in Shangla district.

He said that 185 schools were damaged extensively and 17 others partiality in the quake tragedy. He said that the Erra had so far handed over 30 schools to the education department after their construction. He said work on 82 schools was yet to be started while projects for 18 schools buildings were in the tendering stage.

Mr Abdullah said that the delay in the reconstruction work had put at stake the future of 15,000 students, most of them from poor families. The EDO said that 50 per cent of the students had stopped going to schools and some of the middle class families were sending their children to private institutions. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
rest of students were shifted to rented houses or admitted to other schools in far flung areas, he added. Teachers in various destroyed schools told this correspondent that they had no other option but to teach the students under the open sky. They regretted that six years after the tragedy the children were still sitting on the rubble of the destroyed buildings.

On way to Bisham from Shangla this scribe visited a school building near the road in Karora area and saw that two teachers were sitting under a tree in the ruined building. When asked about the situation, the teachers said it was government high school, Karora, which was destroyed in the 2005 earthquake and since then nobody had come here to see the condition of the school. The students were sitting on the ground in the open.

The teachers said that the school building was partially damaged and could have been put to use, but the Erra declared the building dangerous for living and destroyed it in 2010. They said they had objected to the Erra action and even wrote letters to the DCO and EDO Shangla for intervention, but in vain.

Iftikhar Khan, principal of the school, said that there was no shelter and in case of rain students did not come to school.
