Girl loses stomach after drinking cocktail containing liquid nitrogen
A teenage girl has undergone emergency surgery after drinking a cocktail containing liquid nitrogen.

Gaby Scanlon was celebrating her 18th birthday with friends in Lancaster city centre when she had the drink at Oscars wine bar on Thursday night.

Police said she had her stomach removed afterwards in an urgent operation thought to have saved her life.

Miss Scanlon, from the nearby village of Heysham, had reported feeling breathless and then developed severe stomach pain after drinking the cocktail.

She was taken to Lancaster Royal Infirmary at about 11pm, diagnosed with a perforated stomach and underwent emergency surgery to remove it, Lancashire Constabulary said.

The premises involved have fully cooperated with all agencies and have suspended the serving of drinks involving liquid nitrogen."
The teenager was said to be in a serious but stable condition afterwards, and was apparently well enough last night to write on Twitter: "Maybe stay off the liquid nitrogen' is not a f------------ funny thing to say to me." She also tweeted: "I nearly died."

A police front man said: "The investigation is still in its early stages and we are still interviewing witnesses to establish the full facts.

The premises involved have fully cooperated with all agencies and have suspended the serving of drinks involving liquid nitrogen."

#7  Apparently the liquid nitrogen creates nice mist as it burns off or whatever but they aren't supposed to drink it. Either someone got stupid or something else is going on.

#9  Liquid nitrogen is at something like -196C.

I don't understand howver how it could happen. Firrst: the girls should heva noticed it was coooools. In fact it is so cold that if you put it in a metal recipient there will be dropletes of liquid oxygen in the bottom of it.

Also at science museum the attendant threw a fair quentity of it it the public and it vaporized before reaching anyone. Finally we passed (briefly) our hands in it and nobody was hurt because it vaporized around our hands.

She drank a cocktail containing liquid nitrogen?

Have any of you ever picked up a piece of glass that was cooled down to -196 C? I have a few times. You immediately get frost bite on your fingers. There is no confusing it with a cocktail drink, even if one were spectacularly stupid and increadibly drunk.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Romans and Hans Caused Global Warming
SEATTLE (CBS SEATTLE) – A recent European study found that a record rise in greenhouse gases happened during two centuries in which the Roman Empire and Han Dynasty were ruling the region.
In a challenge to the United Nations’ view that man-made climate change only began around the year 1800, the study was conducted at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. A record of the atmosphere trapped in Greenland’s ice found the level of heat-trapping methane rose about 2,000 years ago and stayed at that higher level for about two centuries, according to Reuters.
Methane? That's a lot of cow farts.
“Per capita they were already emitting quite a lot in the Roman Empire and Han Dynasty,” said Celia Sapart of the findings by an international team of scientists in Thursday’s edition of the journal Nature.
It could have been a natural occurance. Naaaa.
Rates of deforestation “show a decrease around AD 200, which is related to drastic population declines in China and Europe following the fall of the Han Dynasty and the decline of the Roman Empire,” the scientists wrote.
All those people breathing out CO2. I hope no one gets ideas about a sudden population decrease.
However, mankind’s emissions 2,000 years ago, when the world population was an estimated 300 million, were discernible but tiny compared with current levels caused by a population of 7 billion.
But it's still the humans' fault.
Much more wailing, hand-wringing, and gnashing of teath along with self-flagellation at the link.

#1  Once again they have the fallacy of not asking if the rise in gases follows a warming trend or is the cause. They just jump to the latter conclusion.

'Labor Hero' Awarded to Lathe No. 26 at Pyongyang Factory
Feel-Good Story of the Month:
The DPRK awarded the title of labor hero of the DPRK and the gold medal (hammer and sickle) and the First Class of the Order of National Flag to the lathe No. 26 at the Pyongyang Textile Machine Factory.

Lathe No. 26 is the historic lathe which leader Kim Jong Il personally operated when he came to this factory for production practice during his days of study at Kim Il Sung University. He set a noble example of equipment and technological management and raised the torch of the model machine movement.

That machine had operated in full capacity over last more than 50 years and was modernized as CNC lathe. The lathe has greatly contributed to the building of a thriving nation by processing a large number of parts needed for the production of textile machines and custom-built equipment for major projects.

A decree of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly on awarding the title of labor hero to it was issued on Thursday.

Economy
Restaurant Chain May Cut Hours to Skip Obamacare
Unintended consequences?
A major restaurant group is experimenting with cutting its employees hours in the hopes of cutting the costs of healthcare. Darden Restaurants, which owns the Red Lobster, Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, and Yard House chains has stopped offering full-time schedules to hourly workers. The company plans to offer a maximum of 28 hours per week per employee.
So they can work at two restaurants to make ends meet, but still no health care.
Under a section of President Barack Obama's Affordable Healthcare Act due to go into effect in 2014, large employers face fines of up to $3,000 per employee if they fail to provide insurance for employees who work an average of 30 or more hours per week.
Apparently the geniuses who wrote this thing failed to consider all the possible avenues of escape.
Darden said it offers health insurance to its 185,000 employees nationwide but many are on a limited-benefit plan which will be phased out under Obamacare. Darden plans to open 500 new restaurants in the next five years, adding an estimated 50,000 new jobs.

Europe
Greece: Merkel travels to eurozone fault line
As Merkel goes through border control?
Border guard: "Name"
Merkel: "Angela Merkel"
Border guard: "Occupation"
Merkel: "No, business trip this time, maybe next time"

German Chancellor Angela Merkel makes her first visit to Greece since the eurozone crisis began here three years ago. Her five-hour stop is seen by the government as a historic boost for the country's future in Europe's shared currency, but by protesters as a harbinger of more austerity and hardship.

More than 7,000 police will be on hand, cordoning off parks and other sections of central Athens, to keep demonstrators away from the German leader who is due to arrive in the Greek capital at 1:30 p.m. (1030GMT) Tuesday for talks with conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.

Many of Europe's leading politicians have avoided official travel to Greece and the risk of a hostile reception, as the debt-saddled country struggled to keep up with commitments needed to guarantee rescue loan payments and long-term euro membership.

But Merkel, heading Europe's largest bailout contributor, accepted Samaras' invitation to Athens despite failure by his government so far to conclude a massive new austerity package. The cuts will save €13.5 billion ($17.5 billion) but doom Greece to a sixth year of recession in 2013.

After months of tough rhetoric, the German chancellor may be preparing her own voters for a more tolerant approach toward Greece ahead of federal elections next year, according to Jason Manolopoulos, author of the 2011 book on Europe's financial crisis, "Greece's Odious Debt."

"Given how some other members of the (eurozone) core -- Austria, Holland, Finland -- had made some very harsh comments ... I think it does send a message to Greece," Manolopoulos said of Merkel's visit.

"But I think it's also important, if not more important, for German domestic consumption."

In Athens, Merkel will meet with Samaras and President Karolos Papoulias, the largely ceremonial head of state, in adjacent buildings before flying back out of the country.

Draconian security measures include a ban on public gatherings outside the German Embassy and other parts of central Athens as well as within 100 meters (330 feet) of her motorcade route from the airport.

Maulvi Noor Hayat, the prayer leader, was rubbed out by unidentified persons in the small hours of Sunday. Family sources said that Maulvi Hayat went out of home for some work and did not return.

Sources said that unidentified persons sprayed the holy man with bullets and managed to escape.

Following the incident, the angry relatives of the holy man and local people held a rally and blocked Mansehra-Oghi Road for one hour. The protesters were demanding immediate arrest of the killers. They reopened the road to traffic after police high-ups assured them that the killers would be taken to task soon.

The body of Maulvi Hayat, said to be a close friend of MPA Mufti Kifayatullah, was sent to his native village in Allai area of Battagram district for burial after carrying out his postmortem at King Abdullah Teaching Hospital.

Myanmar’s Suu Kyi says willing to be president
YANGON, Myanmar: Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi declared her willingness on Monday to serve as president, and her party’s intention to amend the constitution to allow her to do so.

Suu Kyi said it is her duty as leader of the National League for Democracy party to be willing to take the executive office if that is what the people want. Myanmar’s next election is in 2015.

“I’m a leader of a political party. As a political party leader, I also have to have the courage to be president. If that is what the people want, I will do so,” Suu Kyi told a news conference.

Responding to a question, she said a clause in the constitution that effectively bars her from the job is one of several her party wants to change.

Myanmar’s reformist President Thein Sein also visited the US last month. Thein Sein, a former general, has launched a series of political reforms since taking office last year after almost five decades of repressive military rule. In an interview with the BBC during his trip, he said he could accept the idea of Suu Kyi taking his job.

“Whether she will become a leader of the nation depends on the will of the people. If the people accept her, then I will have to accept her,” Thein Sein said.

Suu Kyi’s party boycotted the last election in 2010, saying several aspects of the election law were unfair and undemocratic. It agreed to run in by-elections earlier this year after Thein Sein’s party had the laws amended.

However, Suu Kyi’s party still wants to change several clauses in the constitution. Some give the military enough unelected seats in parliament to effectively bar constitutional change. Another bars anyone from the presidency whose parent, spouse or child enjoys the privileges of being the citizen of another country. Suu Kyi’s late husband was British and the couple had two sons, who live outside of Myanmar.

Even though Suu Kyi’s party holds only a small number of seats in parliament, she said she believes that other lawmakers may also be agreeable to the changes, noting that “parliament has more democracy than I expected.”

“To amend the constitution has been one of our policies since we ran in the by-elections. We will keep trying to amend it — not only for me to be president, we will also amend other things,” she said.

House Intelligence Committee: Two Chinese Firms ‘National Security Threat’
Chinese telecom firms Huawei and ZTE pose a security threat to the US, a congressional panel has warned after an investigation into the two companies. The House Intelligence report is highly critical of the two companies.

"China has the means, opportunity and motive to use telecommunications companies for malicious purposes," the report says. "Based on available classified and unclassified information, Huawei and ZTE cannot be trusted to be free of foreign state influence and thus pose a security threat to the United States and to our systems." The intelligence committee also accused both companies of providing "incomplete, contradictory, and evasive responses to the Committee's core concerns" during their nearly year-long investigation.

The two firms should be barred from any US mergers and acquisitions, according to a House Intelligence Committee report. The panel says the firms failed to allay fears about their association with China's government and military.

The firms - among the world's biggest makers of networking equipment - denied the accusations in front of the panel. China's Foreign Ministry urged the US to "set aside prejudices" regarding the two firms.

Huawei was started by Ren Zhengfei, a former member of the People's Liberation Army, in 1987. As the firm has grown to become one of the largest global players in the sector, fears about its ties with the Chinese military have frequently surfaced. Earlier this year, it along with ZTE, faced allegations that some of their equipment had been installed with codes to relay sensitive information back to China. ZTE is also facing accusations it sold US telecoms equipment to Iran, in breach of US sanctions. Telecoms giant Cisco on Monday ended its relationship with ZTE, Reuters reported, after its equipment was included in the Tehran deal.

#1  China's Foreign Ministry urged the US to "set aside prejudices" regarding the two firms.

How novel. Appears they've stumbled onto the race card. I hope the actions taken by the House Intelligence Committee do not dampen Huawei and ZTE's potential enthusiasm for campaign contributions to the Champ.

They were a bunch of clueless, wet nosed, Ivy League parasites who had never pulled on a pair of boots and didn't bother masking their contempt for the Army. Their primary concerns appeared to focus around legal issues, not results.
