U.S. to execute man despite victims' family and Navajo Nation pleas
  • [Iraq Sun] U.S. Attorney General William Barr on Wednesday directed the Federal Bureau of Prisons to reschedule the execution of Lezmond Mitchell.

  • Mitchell, a Navajo, has been on Death Row following his sentencing after he was convicted of the brutal murders of a Navajo woman and her nine-year-old granddaughter.

  • In October 2001, Mitchell murdered Alyce Slim, a 63-year-old grandmother, and her nine-year-old granddaughter as part of a carjacking in Arizona.

#3  The headline vs. the bullet point have me confused.

Is the victims family asking for the Execution, or Not wanting it?

Because the US-AG rescheduled delayed the execution thus further delaying it?

#4  I agree that the bullet points, are unilluminating, J-Nobody, and the full text of the article at the link is no more so. But a search of the killer’s name lead me to an AZ Central article on the subject, which in forms us that

The Navajo Nation is against the death penalty.

Johnathan Aminoff and Celeste Bacchi, Mitchell's lawyers, said in a statement that the federal government's announcement of a new execution date demonstrates disrespect for the Navajo Nation's values and sovereignty.

"In what the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals referred to as a 'betrayal of a promise made to the Navajo Nation,' the Department of Justice exploited a legal loophole and sought the death penalty against Mr. Mitchell for the federal crime of carjacking over the objection of the Navajo Nation, the victims’ family, and the local United States Attorney’s Office."

The world does like to deplore those barbaric, uncivilized Americans and their fondness for killing, both personally with guns (!!!) and in our death penalty for convicted criminals, which most First World countries have given up.

US economy collapsed 32.9 percent Q2 amid pandemic: government

The 10% German economic decline is implied to be over a quarter's time.
German economy suffers sharpest decline on record plunging 10% since April due to coronavirus hammering production
German exports reportedly plummeted by 30 per cent year-on-year at the height of worldwide lockdowns in April and May. Car manufacturing alone fell by a staggering 40 per cent year-on-year over the first six months of 2020.

"It's clear that it was a really horrible quarter for Germany," DW's Chelsea Dulaney said. "We saw declines basically across the entire country," she added.

So does this imply that the Chinese corona virus epidemic has reduced advanced countries' economies GDP by about 12% in the first 2 quarters (2+10%)?

Russia sentences former US marine to nine years on police assault charge
[Jpost] A Russian court sentenced a former US Marine to nine years in jail on Thursday after convicting him of endangering the lives of two coppers in a trial the United States criticized as "theater of the absurd" and lacking serious evidence.
Trevor Reed, a student at the University of North Texas, said he could not remember the events of last summer because he was drunk when he was detained after leaving a party in Moscow.

But he denied the charge in court after hearing what he said was the flimsy evidence presented during the trial and the investigation's failure to obtain video evidence that could prove his innocence.

"It's clearly political," he told news hounds in court.

The conviction is likely to spur media speculation that Reed could become part of a possible prisoner swap reportedly being negotiated by Moscow and Washington. Neither side has confirmed such talks are taking place.

Russia convicted US citizen Paul Whelan, also a former Marine, last month of espionage and sentenced him to 16 years in jail. Whelan denied wrongdoing. US investor Michael Calvey is being held under house arrest on fraud charges he denies.

Whelan's lawyer has said he believes Moscow wants to exchange Whelan for an arms dealer, Viktor Bout, and another Russian held in US prisons.

Harvard University Professor Charged with Tax Offenses
They got Al Capone on tax offenses, too.
[Justice.gov] Dr. Charles Lieber was previously indicted on charges of making false statements to federal authorities regarding his participation in China’s Thousand Talents Program

The former Chair of Harvard University’s Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department was charged today in a superseding indictment with tax offenses for failing to report income he received from Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) in Wuhan, China.

Dr. Charles Lieber, 61, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston on two counts of making and subscribing a false income tax return and two counts of failing to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts (FBAR) with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In June 2020, Lieber was indicted on two counts of making false statements to federal authorities. Lieber was arrested on Jan. 28, 2020.

The superseding indictment alleges that Lieber served as the Principal Investigator of the Lieber Research Group at Harvard University, which received more than $15 million in federal research grants between 2008 and 2019. Unbeknownst to his employer, Harvard University, Lieber allegedly became a “Strategic Scientist” at WUT and, later, a contractual participant in China’s Thousand Talents Plan from at least 2012 through 2015. China’s Thousand Talents Plan is one of the most prominent Chinese talent recruitment plans designed to attract, recruit and cultivate high-level scientific talent in furtherance of China’s scientific development, economic prosperity and national security.

Under the terms of Lieber’s three-year Thousand Talents contract, WUT allegedly paid Lieber a salary of up to $50,000 per month, living expenses of up to $150,000 and awarded him more than $1.5 million to establish a research lab at WUT. It is alleged that in 2018 and 2019, Lieber lied to federal authorities about his involvement in the Thousand Talents Plan and his affiliation with WUT.

According to the superseding indictment, in tax years 2013 and 2014, Lieber earned income from WUT in the form of salary and other payments made to him pursuant to the Strategic Scientist and Thousand Talents Contracts, which he did not disclose to the IRS on his federal income tax returns. The superseding indictment also alleges that Lieber, together with WUT officials, opened a bank account at a Chinese bank during a trip to Wuhan in 2012. Thereafter, between at least 2013 and 2015, WUT periodically deposited portions of Lieber’s salary into that account. U.S. taxpayers are required to report the existence of any foreign bank account that holds more than $10,000 at any time during a given year by the filing an FBAR with the IRS. Lieber allegedly failed to file FBARs for the years 2014 and 2015.

The charge of making false statements provides for a sentence of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000. The charge of making and subscribing false income tax returns provides for a sentence of up to three years in prison, one year of supervised release and a $100,000 fine. The charge of failing to file an FBAR provides for a sentence of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

#4  Yes, this is typical bad behavior by the ChiComs and they are demolishing the voting and human rights of the Hong Kong citizens in an all-too-predictable push to get full control of the former British colony.

But IMO, the former Hong Kong governor Patten doth protest too much. He was the governor of Hong Kong in the lead up to the transfer of sovereignty. The Brits waited until the last few years to expand the vote to more Hongkongers and expand representation in the Legislative Council (LegCo). It seemed like a half-hearted effort cloaked in the oratory of democratic traditions and popular sovereignty. Sure they got some more representation pushed through before the Changeover and the one nation/two systems agreement was reached (which China has now abrogated).

However - if the Brits had expanded voting and democratic practices earlier that the 5 years before the changeover, Hong Kong could have had a longer and more independent tradition of democracy which would have made the red chinese violations more egregious. As it stands now, the Chinese know that no one can really do anything, Thatcher knew back in the late 70s/early 80s that the Brits could not stop the Chicoms from taking over HK either by force or other method so she made the deal in accordance to the original lease agreement. She - and anyone else involved with HK policy - should have started the democratic expansion at that point, so there was a missed opportunity.

Instead, it was left to later PMs and to Chris Patten to push through weak democratic reforms at the very end. Patten et alii applied a democratic band-aid when much stronger measures were needed and now are shocked shocked that their rickety democratic infrastructure is not up to the task against the inevitable chinese demolition.

That said, the HK democrats have been much more vocal, assertive, and incalcitrant that I ever would have imagined and they are an inspiration for true, legitimate human rights marchers. In the early 90s, as the world headlines in full caps reported on the first Iraq war, the HK headlines worried that hotel occupancy in the territory would suffer from the war. Never would I have imagined the strong reaction they have put up against the Chicoms - braver and bolder than one would have anticipated, especially given the anemic democracy left by the colonials.

China sees spike in COVID-19 cases 6 months after WHO declares coronavirus a health emergency
[FoxNews] China on Thursday said it still has more than 18,000 people stuck in quarantine amid a spike in COVID-19 cases across the country.

The admission comes six months after the novel coronavirus was declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization. Since then, the virus has spread and infected more than 17 million people around the world and killed 667,808 — a number that is increasing daily.

More than 66 percent of China's quarantined residents are in the western province of Xinjiang. Officials there have locked down some residential areas, restricted public transit and ordered mass testing as authorities struggle to contain the flare-up.

The last time Beijing reported more than 18,000 people who had been in close contact with confirmed coronavirus cases was on April 3.

At the height of the pandemic, the number ballooned to 189,000, according to China's National Health Commission.

On Wednesday, China reported 105 new cases of COVID-19.

But the upward trend is not taking place only in China.

Australia recorded more than 700 new infections and had its deadliest day on Thursday, with 13 deaths.

In the United States, there have been more than 4.4 million infections total. The death count has hit 150,733 — by far the highest in the world, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

The grim milestone comes amid signs that the nation's outbreak is beginning to stabilize in 15 Southern states but rising in the Midwest, brought on by young people who have been maskless and going to bars, restaurants and gyms.

The NBA Just Got Caught In the Biggest Scandal of Their History, Players Told Not to Comment
[RedState] While the connections between the NBA and China have been obvious for a long time, the basketball league has done a fairly effectively job of side-stepping criticism. That’s largely been possible because of a compliant media, which doesn’t dare criticize an organization so committed to "social justice." Lebron James, for example, has been allowed to continually not answer questions about China’s abuses even as he proclaims himself a leader in the "anti-racist" movement.

But that may be about to change. The biggest scandal in the league’s history has just dropped and it’s directly connected to human rights abuses in China.

Economy
U.S. Economy Shrank At Historic 33% Annual Rate In Second Quarter‐But That's Not The Whole Story
[Forbes] U.S. gross domestic product—the total value of all the goods and services produced by the economy—fell at an annual rate of nearly 33% in the second quarter, the biggest annualized drop in history, but that statistic doesn’t tell the whole story. Here’s a better way to think about it.

KEY FACTS
The shocking 33% number assumes that the rate of economic contraction in the United States continues unchanged for the rest of the year—that won’t be the case because the country has partially reopened and is unlikely to repeat the near nationwide coronavirus lock-down of the second quarter.

The change in GDP from the first quarter to the second quarter was 9.5%, a much more accurate—and still dire—representation of what has changed in the economy over the last several months.

The Commerce Department said the decline was fueled by drops in personal consumption, exports, and spending by state and local governments, among other factors.

A bump in federal government spending—thanks to CARES Act rescue provisions—helped to offset some of the damage.

The second quarter also saw a soaring personal savings rate (the amount saved as a percentage of disposable income) of 25.7% compared with 9.5% in the first quarter.

Am I Insensitive? A Facebook Post
An original post by Rantburg’s own Raj. Ignore the link, dear Reader, he just pasted that in the source box as filler.
So I'm on FB for the past couple of hours because, as I'm setting up the next class reunion for what should've been an event next week (I'm class CIO now), I decided to delay the reunion because a report came over saying the place I usually hold it had multiple cases of the dreaded Chink Virus. Event's been moved back to mid-October.

I then saw another post on a local Quincy site and, since I have a partial death wish (or maybe I don't give a rat's ass anymore), I decided to post on some wankers asking the following - 'We're doing a survey on a name for a group dedicated to minorities' or some such shit in order to find out how fast I get tossed from that FB group. Naturally I gave my two cents (in an effort to find out how fast I get tossed) and offered up the following:

"How about 'Special People In Communities ($PIC)' ?" No immediate feedback as of right now...

Health Ministry: Number of coronavirus deaths reaches over 500
[Arutz 7] - Israel's Health Ministry on Friday reported that 1,785 people were diagnosed with coronavirus since Thursday.

At the same time, the number of coronavirus deaths rose to 503.

Currently, there are 26,080 active cases of coronavirus in Israel, including 321 seriously ill patients and 99 patients who are on ventilators. So far, 43,796 people have recovered from coronavirus.

On Thursday, 20,846 people were tested for coronavirus.

Meanwhile, researchers from Hebrew University estimate that the steps taken to gain control of the second wave of coronavirus have succeeded in bringing down the rate of infection and the increase in the number of patients hospitalized.

According to Yediot Aharonot, the research team does not believe that more restrictions need to be added in order to flatten the curve. However, the team emphasized that gatherings in closed areas should be limited, as many activities as possible should be held in open air, and better epidemiological tracking should be employed.

Within the next three weeks, the price of the spike will make itself felt, with approximately 200 more coronavirus patients dying of the disease, they added.

The Israeli government aims to bring the number of new infections down from 2,000 per day to 400 within the next month, in order to allow the next school year to begin on time.

Impoverished Cambodia cringes at PM Hun Sen wearing $1 million watches
  • [Iraq Sun] Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen was criticized this week over his collection of million-dollar watches in a display of vast personal wealth. One of these, a Patek Philippe watch distinguished by white gold engravings and a blue leather strap, is valued at $1.2 million.

  • "Hun Sen's love for multi-million dollar luxury watches is just obscene in a country where per capita GDP is just $1,500 a year."

Michigan B&B Removes Norwegian Flag After Receiving Abuse Mistaking It For Confederate Flag
Like I always say, half of everybody is below average.
[MEDIAITE] A bed and breakfast in Saint Johns, Michigan has removed a Norwegian flag from the building after dozens of people allegedly confused it for the Confederate flag and complained.According to WILX-10, "dozens of guests and people driving by have accused the couple" behind the Nordic Pineapple Bed and Breakfast "of flying a Confederate flag."

Kjersten Offbecker, one of the owners, said, "They are the same color, but there are no stars on the Norwegian flag, and the Confederate flag is a big ’x’ and the Norwegian flag is part of the Nordic countries, they’re all crosses."

Offbecker claimed angry passersby have told them, "You should be ashamed to fly the Confederate flag. You’re a bigot because you fly the Confederate flag," and that the abuse became so "negative" they decided to remove the flag altogether over fears "it was deterring people" from visiting.

In a Facebook post last week, the Nordic Pineapple announced the removal of the flag, proclaiming, "It is a sad day at The Nordic Pineapple. We have decided to no longer fly The Norwegian flag on the front of the inn. This flag is so often mistaken for the Confederate flag and people are often offended by it before they realize that they are mistaken."

#3  ^ Not the country, just the left!

The left is apparently made up of mentally defective people.

I blame this on their parents doing alcohol and various drugs during their pregnancy and beyond.

#8  A sign that things are going so well that the useless, miserable, easily offended has to go after a flag they think goes back 160 years as an excuse to weep and wail and nash their teeth about, when it is not they hoped it was.
