[BusinessInsider] The long-awaited "Top Gun: Maverick" will fly into theaters later this month, and while most of the movie features very real US Navy aircraft, there's one exotic platform aviation buffs might not recognize: the hypersonic Darkstar.
Darkstar may not be a real airplane, but it certainly looks the part — so much so that the Navy apparently told Top Gun's producer, legendary filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer, that China re-oriented spy satellites to get a glimpse of the full-size mock-up they built for filming.
"The Navy told us that a Chinese satellite turned and headed on a different route to photograph that plane. They thought it was real. That's how real it looks," Bruckheimer told Sandboxx News.
As we've discussed before, Darkstar bears a striking resemblance to artist renderings of Lockheed Martin's long-awaited follow-up to the SR-71 Blackbird, the hypersonic SR-72. As it turns out, that may not have been by happenstance.
According to Bruckheimer and Joseph Kosinski, the film's director, they actually worked with engineers out of Lockheed Martin's famed Skunk Works on the design.
"Joe worked with Skunk Works and Lockheed [Martin] to design the plane that's in there. So they had a lot of fun doing Darkstar," Bruckheimer said.
Kosinski, who previously helmed sci-if action flicks like "Tron: Legacy" and "Oblivion," partnered with the aviation firm not only to design their Darkstar aircraft, but to actually build a full-scale mockup.
The finished product looked awfully believable, which the director credits to support the film received from Skunk Works.
"The reason we approached Skunk Works is because I wanted to make the most realistic hypersonic aircraft we possibly could. In fact, as you saw, we built it full-scale in cooperation with them," Kosinski told Sandboxx News. "But the reason it looks so real is because it was the engineers from Skunk Works who helped us design it. So those are the same people who are working on real aircraft who helped us design Darkstar for this film."
If any firm could make a fake aircraft seem real enough to fool the Chinese military into re-orienting a spy satellite to snap pictures of it, it would be Lockheed Martin's legendary Skunk Works. The firm has specialized in designing groundbreaking classified military aircraft for literally decades.

Seems likely to me the US used 'fake plane for a movie' disinformation more than once as cover for a real plane. They'd be fools to not check it out. That is what the satellites are for.

"It looked like a teenage kid that passed out in his car after a long night of partying and his mom caught him," said Gillotti.
The man said that the bear went through his truck looking for food and later moved on to his mother-in-law's car. He said that the incident was funny until the bear started panicking, after which he decided to call the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).
"It was really, really scared when we got close to it. It was almost like a deer in headlights, it was stunned," said Gillotti, adding that "the bear's eyes didn't really move, but rather stayed focused on him and the officer while they tried to get out of the truck."
The bear bravely ran away and no one was injured during the incident. However, you can observe a lot just by watching... the man believes that the animal will come again.

[FoxNews] The NYPD – said to be the largest police force in the country – is projected to surpass its budgeted overtime expenditures by $142.7 million for fiscal year 2022, which runs through June, according to IBO data provided to Fox News Digital and first reported by Bloomberg. If the office’s projections ring true, the NYPD will have spent the second-highest amount of overtime, behind 2020 with $837.5 million, in the six years provided by IBO.
A spokesperson for the office noted that the statistics reflect all NYPD overtime, including that for civilian members, but more than 80% comes from uniformed officers.
But what is causing such high overtime expenditures?
"I would guess that this fiscal year, with the violence being up as high as it has been, they’ve been doing more and more of that violence reduction overtime. It’s putting the extra cops out on the streets," said Terence Monahan, who served as the NYPD's Chief of Department – the highest-ranking uniformed police officer – from 2018 to 2021, under Police Commissioners Dermot James O'Neill and Dermot Shea.
"Plus, now events are happening. Parades are happening again. Parades always come into overtime because it takes a lot of personnel," he added.
Monahan, who spent just months shy of 40 years with the department, told Fox News Digital it is not unusual for the NYPD to go over budget in terms of its overtime spending, but noted that OT costs in 2021 were as low as they were – $480.50 million – because there was "such a squeeze on everything we did."
"Plus, there were no events, there were no parades – everything was canceled, which helped somewhat on the overtime," he said. But the department also "didn’t do any of our violence reduction overtime that summer, which led to the most violent summer the city’s ever seen."

[AlAhram] Billionaire Elon Musk has strengthened the equity stake of his offer to buy Twitter with commitments of more than $7 billion from a range of investors, including Silicon Valley heavy hitters like Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison.
The Thursday filing also said that Musk is in ongoing talks with other parties including former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who is the second largest individual stakeholder in the company after Musk.
Other investors include Sequoia Capital Fund, which pledged $800 million, and VyCapital, which pledged $700 million, according to a Thursday filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. But Ellison, who is also a and Tesla board member, is making the biggest contribution, pegged at $1 billion.
Technology venture capitalist Ben Horowitz said his firm, known as Andreessen Horowitz or a16z, is investing $400 million because it believes in Musk's ``brilliance to finally make it what it was meant to be.''
``While Twitter has great promise as a public square, it suffers from a myriad of difficult issues ranging from bots to abuse to censorship,'' Horowitz tweeted Thursday. ``Being a public company solely reliant on an advertising business model exacerbates all of these.''
Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud has pledged 35 million in Twitter shares in support of Musk, according to the filing.
Musk in earlier regulatory filings revealed that he has sold roughly $8.5 billion worth of shares in Tesla to help fund the purchase. Musk later tweeted that he doesn't plan any further sales of the company's shares, meaning he would need outside commitments to help fund the $44 billion deal.
Because of the new funding listed in the SEC filing Thursday, Musk will cut the $12.5 billion in margin loans against his Tesla shares in half, to $6.25 billion. The transaction is also now being funded by $27.25 billion in cash and equities, up from $21 billion.
Shares of Twitter Inc. have remained below the per-share offering bid by Musk of $54.20 because there are still doubts on Wall Street about whether the deal will go through.
The new round of funding pushed the price of Tesla shares closer to what Musk is paying, with the stock jumping almost 4% at the opening bell, to $50.85.
``In this game of high stakes poker the Ellison and impressive list of backers will remove more of an overhang from Tesla shares as the Musk leverage of shares now becomes less onerous,`` wrote analyst Dan Ives who follows Twitter for Wedbush. ``This was a smart financial and strategic move by Musk that will be well received across the board and also shows the Twitter deal is now on a glide path to get done by the end.''

In addition, the disruption of soldiers returning to the labor force and other factors made this a nasty year for labor productivity.

[AlAhram] A 500-million-euro ($530 million) Lithuanian-Polish natural gas transmission pipeline was inaugurated Thursday, completing another stage of regional independence from Russian energy sources.
The Gas Interconnection Poland-Lithuania pipeline that runs more than 500 kilometers (310 miles), comes ``at a time when Russia has once again tried to blackmail us using gas,'' Polish President Andrzej Duda said at the inauguration.
Lithuania's Prime Minister Ingridas Simonyte added that ``any reduction or disappearance of this source of funding would have a very significant impact on the Russian economy and the ability to continue financing the war in Ukraine.''
The Lithuania-Poland leg is integrated with pipelines in the other two Baltic states _ Estonia and Latvia _ and Finland, and into the European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... gas transmission system. Before the pipeline was built, the four countries could only receive pipeline gas from Russia.
It’s not clear to me who is supplying the gas that’s to fill this pipeline, except that it is not Russia. Any ideas, dear Reader?
