Airline employee worked illegally for the Chinese military at New York airports, US prosecutors say
(CNN)A former employee of a Chinese airline at two of the main airports serving New York has pleaded guilty to felony charges stemming from the illegal shipment of packages on behalf of China's military, the US Justice Department said Wednesday.

Ying Lin is a naturalized US citizen originally from China. She took packages from Chinese military officers assigned to China's United Nations mission in New York and put them on flights headed to China without the officers on board -- a violation of US air safety rules -- prosecutors allege.

In return, Lin received benefits including tax-exempt purchases of liquor, cigarettes and electronic devices, perks which US authorities said were "worth tens of thousands of dollars."

Chinese construction workers, who were only allowed to operate at Chinese government facilities under the terms of their visas, also did free work at Lin's two residences in the borough of Queens, according to the Justice Department.

Rapper Kodak Black aka Bill Karpi arrested in New York on drug, weapons charges
(Reuters) - Rapper Kodak Black was released from custody by the New York State Police on Thursday after being arrested on drug and gun charges while coming across the Canada-U.S. border near Niagara Falls, police said.

Black, 21, was stopped on Wednesday evening by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the Lewiston-Queenston International Bridge headed back into the United States from Canada, the New York State Police said in a release.

Black’s real name is Bill Kapri, and he is a resident of Miramar, Florida.

Black, who was driving a Cadillac Escalade, and three other Florida men following in a Porsche were arrested on drug and weapons charges. Black was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Glock 9mm pistol, and unlawful possession of marijuana, police said.

The other three men face similar charges from weapons and drugs found in the Porsche.

Purity Test Fail: Kate Smith's 'God Bless America' out at Yankee Stadium over racist songs
The New York Yankees have decided to no longer run Kate Smith’s version of "God Bless America" during their seventh-inning stretch because of Smith’s affiliation with songs that carried racist lyrics.

Most famously, Smith sang a 1931 song, "That’s Why Darkies Were Born," which opened: "Someone had to pick the cotton, Someone had to pick the corn, Someone had to slave and be able to sing, That’s why darkies were born."

The song, which has been called a satirical take on racism, was a big hit for Smith, and also was recorded by Paul Robeson.

When the Yankees last month became aware of Smith’s history, they switched to a keyboard version of "God Bless America."

The Yankees have played the song in the middle of every game since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the insistence of late owner George Steinbrenner.

In 2009, the Yankees cut ties with singer Ronan Tynan, who had made numerous appearances at the Stadium to sing "God Bless America," after he was alleged to have made anti-Semitic comments.

Their whole broadcast was trump stuff I could see on CNN. FU BBC. Go hang it up with your pal ABC while I sink your ratings to the bottom of the Atlantic.

Anchor yourself with all the trumpphobists and I shall now shove you off on your way without me.

#2  It is nothing like the actual event.

He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace and with His wounds are healed. All we like sheep are gone away; we have turned - everyone - to his own way, and the Lord has laid upon Him the inhquity of us all. Isaiah 53:5-6

Home Front: Culture Wars
Too indolent to go pick up free groceries? Enjoy sleeping until noon? No problem.
NEW YORK (AP) ‐ Amazon and Walmart on Thursday kicked off a two-year government pilot program allowing low-income shoppers on government food assistance in New York to shop and pay for their groceries online for the first time.

ShopRite will join the two retailers on the program early next week, said the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

The USDA has long required customers using electronic benefits transfer, or EBT, pay for their purchases at the actual time and place of sale. So the move marks the first time SNAP customers can pay for their groceries online.

ShopRite and Amazon are providing the service to the New York City area, and Walmart is providing the service online in upstate New York locations. The agency said the pilot will eventually expand to other areas of New York as well as Alabama, Iowa, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington.

The pilot program will test both online ordering and payment. SNAP participants will be able to use their benefits to purchase eligible food items but will not be able to use SNAP to pay for service or delivery charges, the agency said.

"People who receive SNAP benefits should have the opportunity to shop for food the same way more and more Americans shop for food ‐ by ordering and paying for groceries online," said USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue. "As technology advances, it is important for SNAP to advance too, so we can ensure the same shopping options are available for both non-SNAP and SNAP recipients."

Online transactions enforce allowable item rules which retail merchants may not. OTs also provide some identity management which EBT does not.
