Ghislaine Maxwell short on dough, stakes legal claim to $636m Epstein estate
[MAIL] Jeffrey Epstein's 'madam' Ghislaine Maxwell is trying to get cash from the dead child molester's estate to pay off her legal fees.

Maxwell has filed paperwork in the US Virgin Islands for a piece of the disgraced financier's estimated $636 million estate, because, she says, he promised to pay for her lawyers.

The 58-year-old British socialite ‐ who has been in hiding for months ‐made the claim on Friday, five days before Wednesday's deadline for such a claim, according to the New York Times.

Maxwell wants the money to pay for legal expenses for suits from women who say she procured them to give sexual services to Epstein while they were still teenagers.

In her suit, Maxwell describes herself as a longtime employee who had 'a legal and special relationship' with Epstein, who was found dead in his cell in New York last August.

Disabled apartment resident shoots burglar to death
[KHOU] HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A disabled woman shot an intruder to death Saturday afternoon at her north Harris County apartment, according to Sherlocks.

Around 2:50 p.m., Harris County deputies responded to the shooting at the Carrington Place Apartments in the 12700 block of FM 1960 West.

When they arrived at the scene, deputies found an 18-year-old male lying in the grass outside of Building No. 13. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies said the 18-year-old and a 17-year-old male broke a resident's patio door window. The 53-year-old disabled resident was home alone when the teens broke the window and reached inside and unlocked the door, according to Sherlocks.

The resident fired one shot, killing the teen who was in front, deputies said.

The second suspect, Aren Lacour, as well as 18-year-old Ayanna Harrison, were detained at the scene. Deputies said Harrison was the driver of a nearby getaway vehicle.

Deputies said the getaway vehicle, a white four-door Mercedes-Benz, is linked to other burglaries in the area.
Apparently it is a lucrative profession... for a while.
The teen who was shot has not been identified.

Felony murder charges are pending against Lacour and Harrison. They're possibly going to be facing that charge because, according to authorities, they committed the felony offense of burglary of a habitation which resulted in the death of another person.

Harrison is also charged with tampering with evidence because deputies said she tried to conceal the pistol the dear departed suspect was carrying at the time of the burglary.

Detroiter guilty of killing 2 gay men, transgender woman
[DETROITNEWS] A 19-year-old bankrupt, increasingly impoverished, reliably Democrat, Detroit
... ruled by Democrats since 1962. A city whose Golden Age included the Purple Gang...
man was convicted Tuesday in the slayings of two gay men and a transgender woman in Detroit last year.

Devon Kareem Robinson was found guilty by a jury of first-degree premeditated murder, assault with intent to murder, and felony firearm following a trial that began March 9 in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Robinson could face life behind bars without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced April 13 for the shooting deaths of 21-year-old Alunte Davis, 20-year-old Timothy Blancher and 20-year-old Gay Paree Cameron, a transgender woman. All three were shot to death in the living room of an east-side home in the 3700 block of Devonshire following a party attended by about 15 people in the early morning of May 25.

Prosecutors and police believe the victims were targeted for their sexual orientation. Prosecutors also allege Robinson shot and maimed two other people.

Judge Regina Thomas presided over the trial.

A survivor testified about the horrific details of the shooting during a preliminary examination in November, saying there were so many bullets fired that the victims' blood seeped through the walls.

Clifton Keys, a friend of the victims who attended the party, described how a gunman, later identified by authorities as Robinson, came back to the house and sprayed the living room of the residence with gunfire.

Keys said the blood of his friends seeped through the walls of the home. Keys said five of the friends were sitting in the home's dining room when they heard footsteps and then heard gunshots, which they initially thought were fireworks.

Keys said Cameron and Davis ran toward the kitchen while Blancher and another friend, Armon Matthews, fled to the basement.

The friends had met Robinson at a nearby gas station and Cameron invited Robinson to the party.

Robinson allegedly walked to the house after getting the invitation from Cameron and while there was "hugged up" with Cameron. He later left the home with a "blank" look on his face, said Keys.

#4  Look Lex, lets settle it once and for all.
The infection rate, at least to a first approximation, is given by a*I*S where I is the density of infected, S is the density of susceptible, and "a" is the rate coefficient (having the dimension of 1/time/density).
Now, when "I" is small fraction of the total population, "S" can be assumed constant. Thus, the growth rate is proportional to a*I i.e.,
dI/dt = (approx) a*I (exponential growth).
If you decrease "a" - by preventing people from mixing, you decrease the rate - which is desirable unless you have unlimited medical resources (c.f. Italy).
The only other way, yours, is to let people mix freely until most of the population had it. Some died, and the rest are resistant.
Please don't take my word for it and look here.

#5  The elderly are the people we are trying to save, as this virus has a very very high rate of mortality for them specifically. If you think you can just let people get it without endangering the elderly then think of who is taking care of them, the younger people.

#6  You all missing that good old Sears and Roebuck catalogue now.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 03/19/2020 7:38 Comments || Top||

#7  Grom, I'm NOT saying there should be no restrictions or lockdowns. I'm saying they need to be selective, targeted, and above all, informed by much more ACCURATE data on what you call "I" in your formula ("the density of the infected").

What if, as seems all but certain, the numbers being used for "I" by our policy makers are VASTLY understated?

That is, what if the ACTUAL numbers of those infected, as well as the estimated length of time to recover for those who were infected, differ greatly from the "I" and the "t" (time) used by our policy makers in deciding when and where to use their nuclear economic weapon of lockdown?

One of the following things is ~99% certain to be true-- either or both of:
a) many many more people were infected and symptomatic in the earlier part of this year than our "I" numbers indicate (due to sloppy data handling) -- or they were never reflected in the daily counts for "I," thereby producing a false curve, OR

b) many many people were infected but were asymptomatic or else symptomatic and recovered, but were not properly removed from the total count for "I" -- again, due to faulty data practices, and again producing a false curve, OR

c) both a and b, and also a botched understanding of the actual time to recovery for those infected, meaning that every day going forward, your total count for "I" not only fails to capture the newly-infected but fails to subtract those who were but are no longer infected.

Combine the above and you have an INACCURATE INFECTION CURVE, hence no understanding, at all, of how lethal this thing actually is. None.

And upon this garbage data they have decided to destroy the world's economy for a decade. It is almost certainly -- let's be more blunt-- it is absolutely the case that this virus is vastly less lethal than our idiot elites have made it out to be. .

And yet they are killing the economy that sustains and makes civilized living possible for all of us on the basis of garbage data which they don't understand concerning what is almost certainly just a nastier version of the flu.

Selective closures? Fine: maybe sporting events and concerts where tens of thousands of strangers sit elbow to elbow, but not restaurants where parties can be seated six feet apart. A school or work holiday of a month, maybe, but not three months. Etc.

Again, fix your f---ing data points, figure out with much greater precision what the infection curve and mortality rate ACTUALLY look like, and then take INFORMED, data-supported, rational decisions that actually prevent harm -- instead of piling still more harm on top of a crisis.

This is the equivalent of using a flamethrower against rats in the attic. Madness.
Posted by: Lex || 03/19/2020 9:01 Comments || Top||

#8  #7 There is no such thing as accurate data on these things, Lex (that's why numerical simulations are bullshit). Anyone who had a mild cold/flu this winter, might've had Covid-19. What is important is the qualitative behavior of the system of equations. And this is crystal clear: lower mixing rate = lower infection rate. Lower infection rate ===> you don't run out of medical resources and have to triage patients like the Italians!
As to economy, economy will recover. Economy represents innate human selfishness and greediness - the strongest forces in the universe!
China Incorporated was going down anyway. Corona thing will just hasten the process.

Calif.'s Boy Governor Gavin Newsom, a cynical incompetent dope

#16  No one "tried my way." I said, clearly, above that I favor SELECTIVE and TARGETED measures-- intelligent steps that are appropriate to the local setting and that recognize local mores.

Italian mores, living conditions and behavior are different from American or Australian mores, living conditions and behaviors. They're far more urbanized. They live in multi-generation small houses and smaller apartments. They're out and about every day and every evening, strolling and dining and rubbing elbows with others. They're "touchy-feely" huggers.

Most of the above are good and admirable habits but they are not followed by the vast majority of Americans, who live in single-family houses; segregate the generations, including the elderly; drive to work solo; work in large open offices in which it's easy to space people six feet apart; and who are happy to refrain from physical contact on greeting.

We do NOT need to destroy a generation's hopes of a decent life in order to slow the spread of this thing.

That is completely foolish, and history will judge us harshly. As will our children and grandchildren.

#24  Your insults and ad hominems are misplaced.

No one disputes the logic or wisdom of flattening an exponential growth curve. It's your data that are in dispute, and with it, your assessments of the shape of the curve for any region at a particular point in time.

Admit it: you don't know. You have no idea what the actual mortality rate is. No idea how steep the curve is. And in assuming the absolute worst possible case, you are causing more harm than good.

That's the point. Not math, not epidemiology but data aka facts. We're making bad decisions based on bad data.

History will not be kind to us.

In Germany, we have more beds for intensive care, but if the current growth rate of 20% per day is not brought down, overwhelming will happen here, too. More and more hospital staff will be infected and yes, that's a problem for all those in hospital who DON'T have COVID 19.

At current growth rates, we'd have 1 million infected people in 25 days. About 150,000 are going to need intensive care.

Only a week later, the number would have jumped to 3 million infected, with up to 450,000 needing intensive care.

That's why we need DRASTIC measures to bring that curve down and stretch it out.

This is not rocket science.

Of course nonsense. They started with one case, and while the conditions for spreading the virus were perfect, there wasn't enough time to make that exponential curve explode. Passenger disembarked before.

(a) No actually, if you read Levitt carefully EC, he's right. Three weeks is enough time under these (single air conditioning system, single dinning room) conditions.
(b) Even if 80% naturally immune, that's still 0.2*7.7*10^9*10^(-2) = 15.4 million dead.

#35  Nice try but another fail.
How bout you stop your pissing March about credentials and take a look at the CDC's own Diamond Princess data ?

# of total passengers & crew on the Diamond Princess was reported to be 3,711.

As of March 5, the CDC's total count of laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID19 on the Diamond Princess was confirmed a total of 634 (adjusted down from initial count of 706).

634 out of 3,711. Can you say, roughly 20%?

Now look at mortality-- again, let's use CDC data.

Also as of March 5, the CDC's total count of deaths of Diamond Princess individuals that were attributable to COVID19 was 4, yes FOUR -- this too was adjusted down from the initial assessment of 6.

"Crude CFR, %: 0.83"
"Adjusted CFR, %: 0.64"

Please stop with your insults and don't be so obnoxious.

Everything I and others are saying is based on logical analysis of data -- in this case the CDC's own data. Take it up with the CDC if you don't like this data set.

Best regards,
L

#38  More snark.
Try again: 4 people died out of nearly 4,000 on a cruise ship, nearly all of whom would have been exposed at some point on this ship's journey. This is the most benign environment possible for the spread of the virus, for all the obvious reasons - close quarters, intimacy, shared dining facilities, recirculated air, handrails all over the ship. AND a population that skews elderly!

Even if you assumed that as many as half the US population were to meet all of those risk factors, extrapolating from this particular case to that population of 160 million would get you to about 160,000 deaths. That's the worst case.

In reality, the likely total number of deaths will be a small fraction of that absolute worst case number - maybe 40,000, maybe 20,000, maybe 60,000 - but nowhere near your absurd estimates. These deaths are and will be a tragedy. It cuts close to me personally, so I don't say any of this lightly.

But there is simply no f---ing way that the virus in its current form is going to kill millions of Americans. It's on the order of a very nasty flu season. There is no point in killing the economy over a bad flu season.

That's all I'll say on this.
Rant on, rave on, direct your bile at 'Erb or someone else but not me. I'm out.

Счастливо,
Л.

#46  I will just point out that there are plentiful safety nets for the poor, so they will be uncomfortable but not destroyed.

Between some and many small businesses will go under, however, driving their owners to bankruptcy. Which is not the same as being wiped out and ruined, exactly the refuge it was designed to be.

President Trump yesterday signed the revised version of that bill the honourable speaker of the house had loaded with so many extras, so funding will start flowing in all sorts of directions, including expanded paid leave — one can hope that in the midst of all the alarums, the most egregiously unnecessary spending will somehow not be executed.

The IRS announced that while tax returns are due as usual on April 15th, payment can be delayed for three months.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced they will not be evicting anyone in the short term.

I think federal payroll taxes are not being collected for the short term as well.

If we can break the transmission chain on this thing, it may die out completely in the next month or so. Or at least become rare enough that the 40+ research efforts toward better tests, treatments, and vaccines will have time to bear fruit, along with the DOD sharing masks, meds, ventilators and field hospitals, and manpower where they are most needed, while domestic manufacturers turn their efforts to ramping up assembly lines making masks, protective clothing, hospital supplies, and so forth. Which means we are probably not looking at months of confinement, but weeks.

Virus revives demand for traditional French soap
MARSEILLE, France (AP) ‐ Amid the rapid spread of the new coronavirus across Europe, the hallmark Marseille tradition of soap-making is enjoying a renaissance, as the French rediscover an essential local product.

Serge Bruna’s grandfather entered the then-booming business in the southern port city more than a century ago. His father followed suit, although the family enterprise was requisitioned during World War II, when soap was considered an essential commodity.

Today, Bruna sells soap from the same shopfront on Marseille’s Old Port ‐ wearing a sanitary mask and skintight gloves.

"Even though we work in a factory full of virus-repellent soap, it is good to take precautions," he said.

Bruna’s Savonnerie de la Licorne, which runs four soap shops on the Old Port, a museum and a small factory in the heart of Marseille, has seen its shop sales increase 30% and delivery orders quadruple since Italy declared a state of emergency over the coronavirus.

#2  I had wondered what the difference between "traditional French soap" and "normal lye and fat soaps"

I found the following at finecraftguild.com:

"Mine is a sample of the original Savon de Marseille soap recipe, which is of very high quality. It uses 72% olive oil, combined with coconut and palm oils. The soap’s key ingredient, pure olive oil, is ultra-moisturizing and makes it particularly suitable for dry, sensitive skin.

The addition of palm oil makes the soap whiter, while purer olive oil bases (with clay) are greener. French soap makers add green clay to help absorb the oils and to make the soap soft & silky. The clay works similar to clay facials: it draws toxins from the skins while providing the skin with minerals to heal and restore its vitality."

Much more at link above.

Nearly half Irish coronavirus cases in Dublin, growth rate eases
DUBLIN (Reuters) - Nearly half confirmed cases of coronavirus in Ireland are in the capital Dublin, the health department said on Wednesday in its first detailed regional breakdown of figures as the daily growth rate eased.

Ireland’s total number of cases rose by 25% to 366, below the growth rate of the previous two days and the 30% level Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said would lead to an estimated 15,000 cases by the end of the month.

The number of people who have died from the virus remained at two.

Of the 271 cases notified by the end of Monday, 129 were in Dublin, which makes up just over a quarter of Ireland’s 4.8 million population but is also home to the country’s largest airport.

Just 6 of the 271 patients were admitted to intensive care and 59 of those who tested positive were health workers, the statistics showed.

Ireland has so far shut schools, universities, childcare facilities and pubs, introduced limits on mass gatherings and urged citizens to reduce social contacts to only a handful of people close to them to slow the spread.

Ireland’s chief medical officer, Tony Holohan, said that while he was encouraged by the compliance so far, it would take a week to 10 days before his team could see if the measures were working.

"You can see it every day in the city. When I walked into work this morning, I saw six buses pass one after the other and I counted 11 passengers across the buses," he told a news conference.

"There is a very high degree of compliance in terms of social isolation measures and that’s a good thing. The public are listening and they are behaving responsibly, however it is too early for us to say in terms of the impact."

China Blames America for China Kicking Out American Newspaper Journalists
[LI] The Communist Chinese government expelled journalists from The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Post on Tuesday to tighten its grip on the coronavirus story.

The Communists blamed the U.S. for the decision while threatening to throw out more journalists.

The journalists from the media outlets have ten days to turn in their credentials:
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday it was demanding all U.S. nationals working for The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and the Washington Post whose credentials expire by the end of the year turn those credentials in within 10 days.

The measure would affect most of the U.S. journalists working at those newspapers in China, which issues press credentials for up to 12 months and has recently limited them to six and, in some cases, as little as one month.

The affected reporters won’t be allowed to report anywhere in China, including the semiautonomous territories of Hong Kong and Macau, the statement said.

It also ordered the three newspapers and two other media outlets‐Voice of America and Time magazine‐to submit information about staff, finances, operations and real estate in China.
Of course, China blamed America because "the Trump administration announced a personnel cap on four state-run Chinese media outlets‐Xinhua News Agency, China Radio International, China Global Television Network and China Daily‐forcing them to reduce their Chinese employees in the U.S. to 100 in total, from 160."

Original Post:
As the Wuhan coronavirus is ravaging countries across the globe, there may be some promising news on the horizon. According to Gregory Rigano, an advisor to Stanford University School of Medicine, a world renowned French researcher tested a promising COVID-19 treatment option with hydroxychloroquine, a drug that’s been around for decades and is typically used to treat malaria.

“As of this morning…a well-controlled peer reviewed study carried out by the most eminent infectious disease specialist in the world—Didier Raoult, MD, PhD—out of the south of France, in which he enrolled 40 patients…that showed a 100 percent cure rate against coronavirus," Rigano told Fox News's Tucker Carlson.

Carlson, looking shocked, said he “only knows what you’re telling me” but that it is “very unusual for a study of anything to produce results of 100 percent.”

China-Japan-Koreas
China's coronavirus recovery is 'all fake,' whistleblowers and residents claim
h/t Instapundit
[Yahoo] - China's claims of how it's handling coronavirus recovery should be taken with more than a few grains of salt.

Even before COVID-19 became a global crisis, Chinese leaders had been criticized for their handling of the situation and lack of transparency about the disease's progression. Things now look like they're on the upswing, and businesses even appear to be headed back to work ‐ but whistleblowers and local officials tell Caixan that's just a carefully crafted ruse.

Beijing has spent much of the outbreak pushing districts to carry on business as usual, with some local governments subsidizing electricity costs and even installing mandatory productivity quotas. Zhejiang, a province east of the epicenter city of Wuhan, claimed as of Feb. 24 it had restored 98.6 percent of its pre-coronavirus work capacity.

But civil servants tell Caixan that businesses are actually faking these numbers. Beijing had started checking Zhejiang businesses' electricity consumption levels, so district officials ordered the companies to start leaving their lights and machinery on all day to drive the numbers up, one civil servant said. Businesses have reportedly falsified staff attendance logs as well ‐ they "would rather waste a small amount of money on power than irritate local officials," Caixan writes.

In Wuhan, officials have tried to make it appear that recovery efforts are going smoothly. But when "central leaders" personally survey disinfecting regimens and food delivery, local officials "make a special effort" for them and them alone, one resident told Caixan. And in a video circulating on social media, residents can be seen shouting at visiting leaders from the apartments where they're being quarantined ‐ "Fake, it's all fake." Read more at Caixan.

Inspiring: Samaritan's Purse Airlifts Field Hospital to Coronavirus-Striken Italy
[PJ] On Tuesday, the North Carolina-based global Christian charity Samaritan's Purse airlifted an emergency field hospital to the Italian city of Milan to help a health care system overwhelmed by the coronavirus. As of Wednesday, Italy experienced 35,317 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, and 2,978 deaths.

Amid this crisis, Samaritan's Purse airlifted a 68-bed emergency field hospital to Milan. The DC-8 aircraft carried approximately 20 tons of medical equipment, a respiratory care unit designed for this specific mission, and 32 disaster relief personnel, including doctors, nurses, and respiratory specialists. That medical team will stay in Italy for a month.

"We are always ready to provide critical relief in the face of this crisis," Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan's Purse, said in a statement. "We are going to Italy to provide life-saving care to people who are suffering. There is a lot of fear and panic around the world, but we trust that God is in control. We continue to pray for everyone affected by this global health crisis and for our medical team as they respond."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Netanyahu: Israel set for major coronavirus lockdown
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the government will later on Thursday approve orders to make the state of emergency, declared over the coronavirus outbreak by the Health Ministry, legally binding.

Police will now be able to enforce health authorities' directives under emergency orders. The order will go onto effect early Friday and will last at the initial stage for seven days.

The move effectively enforces a lockdown on Israel for the first time since the days of the country's establishment.

"Under these orders, you, Israel's citizens, are required to stay at home. It is no longer a request, it is not a recommendation, it is an obligatory directive that will be enforced by enforcement authorities," Netanyahu said in a televised address.

As part of the orders, Israelis will still be allowed to leave the house to purchase food, medicine or to receive medical treatment. Those whose work is defined by the government as "essential" will still be allowed to go to work and will be exempted from the restrictions.

"Even if you go outside for a short time, do not congregate. Keep with you hygiene tools and keep a distance of two meters ... It is not a game, it can seal your fate," said Netanyahu.

Israeli team has coronavirus test kit to test dozens of people at once
[Jpost] ...Now molecular testing for the virus, using the new pooling method, can be done by combining samples taken from 32 or 64 patients, enabling simultaneous testing of dozens of samples. In rare cases where a positive case is found in a joint sample, only then will each of the specific samples be tested individually.

..."Even when we conducted a joint examination of 64 samples in which only one was a positive carrier, the system identified that there was a positive sample," said Professor Roy Kishony, head of the research group in the Faculty of Biology at Technion.

"This is not a breakthrough, but a demonstration of the effectivity of using the existing method and even the existing equipment to significantly increase the volume of samples tested per day," said Prof. Roy Kishony, head of the research group in the Technion's Faculty of Biology.
