Frank Robinson, Major League Baseball's first black manager, dies at 83
[BBC] Legendary baseball Hall of Famer Frank Robinson - the first African-American to manage a professional team - has died aged 83, baseball officials say.

After winning Most Valuable Player awards in both US leagues - the only player in history to do so - he went on to manage Cleveland in 1975.

With a total of 586, he is 10th on the list of the most home runs hit in a major league career.

Robinson, who holds countless other records, died at home in California.

Since his debut, more than half of all teams have had a black manager.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Man with unusual last name can't get ‘Assman' license plate
[NYP] If this sounds like a Seinfeld episode, that’s because it was.

A Canadian license plate review committee has rejected a man’s request to personalize his license plate with his real name: "Assman," because it could be misread and cause offense, according to a report.

Dave Assman, who lives in the Canadian province Saskatchewan, said he’s had his request denied before and doubts whether it’ll ever be granted.

Tyler McMurchy, a spokesman for the SGI, which reviews personalized license plate requests, said the committee must abide by a set of guidelines regardless if a word "is someone’s name and pronounced differently than the offensive version."

"[T]hat’s not something that would be apparent to other motorists who will see the plate," McMurchy said.

But the rejection hasn’t deterred Assman from changing his name, which he said is derived from German and pronounced "Oss-men," CBC reported.

"It’s my last name, I’ve always had it," he said. "I’m not ashamed of it. There’s nothing bad about it."

Russian woman 'eaten by pigs' after collapsing
[BBC] A 56-year-old woman has been eaten by pigs after collapsing in their pen, Russian media report.
Flat ruined her day.
After venturing out to feed the animals in a village in the central Russian region of Udmurtia, the farmer reportedly fainted or suffered an epileptic seizure.

Her husband later found the body.
Parts of it anyway.
She reportedly died of blood loss.

Their farm is in a village in the Malopurginsky district of Udmurtia, east of the city of Kazan.
When was the last time you saw a story about Udmurts?
Local media say the husband had gone to bed early the day before as he was feeling unwell. After waking to find his wife missing, he came upon her body in the pen.

Media reports say an investigation into the incident has been launched.
Pigs are omniverous. And people are made of meat, so what is there to investigate?
Did she fall or was she pushed?

Indian man to sue his parents for giving birth to him ‘without his consent', wants to be paid for his life
[Fox News} A 27-year-old Indian man is going viral after he announced an intent to sue his parents, claiming he didn't give his explicit consent to bring him into the world.

Raphael Samuel, donning a fake beard and sunglasses, said in a YouTube video posted on Tuesday that he is suing his parents because he was conceived without his consent and therefore his parents should pay for his life.

Samuel has been reported as a follower of antinatalism, an increasingly popular yet bizarre ideology that believes that it’s morally wrong for people to procreate and takes a nihilistic approach towards human life, saying the humanity brings only suffering.

Winter Storm Watch for Seattle/Tacoma/Everette
In most of the US this would not be a big deal but Seattle gets very few storm like this. Also they have a lot of fairly steep hills with parking on both sides so an accident can do major damage to traffic. Also Seattle is under deep lefty control so there are lots of homeless people downtown
[Wunderground] * WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 8
inches possible. There remains uncertainty in the details. A few
areas could see up to a foot of snow while a few other locations
may only see 2-3 inches. Windy conditions will develop late
Friday night into Saturday with north winds 15 to 30 mph and
gusts to 40 mph with local blowing snow possible. Temperatures
late Friday night through Saturday will fall through the 20s.

* WHERE...Seattle, Everett, Tacoma, Bremerton, Bellevue, North
Bend, Redmond, and Kent.

* WHEN...From Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon.
Heaviest snowfall accumulations are most likely Friday night
into Saturday morning.

#3  one thing you can count on out here is, that as the storm approaches,at least one seattle tv station will interview ClydeClutchrider, chief tire chain installer for the metro busses and consume 4 minutes trying to get in his way as he slings chains. asking increasingly stupid questions about chains =; how long you been doing this? how long to chains last? how long to do the fleet?

and seattleites cannot get enough.
then they venture out onto hills that have been closed, only to slide and hit something with no idea how that happened.

#4  It's fun to watch the local news outlets go totally batsh*t crazy when we get a light dusting of snow. I am not kidding - an half-inch is enough to get them into a full frothing frenzy. Sending out reporters to the nearest 'steep hill' to show what a disaster it is.
One year Seattle decided that they were not going to sand or salt the streets. I think they were afaid the salt would get down into Puget Sound (a rather large body of... salt water). The results were, as you would expect, a disaster.

Evil, Imperialist, Gringo aid arrives at Colombia border despite Maduro rejection
[Aljazeera] Convoy carrying food and medicines reaches Colombia's Cucuta a day after Venezuela barricades its side of the border.

Cucuta, Colombia - Trucks carrying food and medical supplies from the United States have arrived in Cucuta, on the Colombia-Venezuela border, stoking tensions with the government of President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas.

The arrival of the aid convoy on Thursday, which was organised jointly by the US and Venezuelan opposition leaders, came a day after Venezuela barricaded its own side of the border vowing not to allow entry.

"We are not beggars," Maduro told the military earlier this week, rejecting the move as a ploy to humiliate Venezuela.

Amid uncertainty over the convoy's fate, demonstrators at the Tienditas bridge entrance welcomed the trucks by blowing horns and calling for a change in crisis-hit Venezuela. Among a media scrum, some shouted, "Maduro out now".

Members of the Venezuelan opposition have also converged in Cucuta to help plan and execute the delivery of the aid, in a calculated move seen as a test of the Venezuelan military's loyalty to Maduro.

Immigrant rights attorneys and journalists denied entry into Mexico
[LATimes] Two U.S. immigrant rights attorneys and two journalists who have worked closely with members of a migrant caravan in Tijuana said they had been denied entry into Mexico in recent days after their passports were flagged with alerts by an unknown government.

Their stories are nearly identical: All four report being detained by Mexican immigration authorities while trying to enter the country, and eventually being turned back because the authorities said their passports had been flagged.

It is unclear which government or governments, if any, might have issued the alerts.

The U.S. State Department declined to comment Friday. The Homeland Security Department and Customs and Border Protection declined to provide comment attributable to an official. The Justice Department directed The Times to Mexican officials. Representatives for the Mexican government did not respond to requests for comment.

The two attorneys who were denied entry into Mexico, Nora Phillips and Erika Pinheiro, are leaders of Al Otro Lado, a nonprofit group based in Los Angeles and Tijuana that has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

In 2017, the group filed a lawsuit accusing the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency of unlawfully depriving asylum seekers access to the U.S. asylum process.

In recent months, Al Otro Lado has sent lawyers to Tijuana to advise members of a Central American migrant caravan that arrived late last year at the Mexican border city. Some of the caravan’s members are seeking asylum in the U.S. Al Otro Lado recently partnered with two members of Congress to escort a group of asylum seekers to the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, where the group waited overnight until Customs and Border Protection officials agreed to accept the migrants colonists for processing.

Two journalists who covered the migrant caravan and are not associated with Al Otro Lado described having similar experiences.

Kitra Cahana, a freelance photographer who holds U.S. and Canadian passports, said she was denied entry to Mexico twice in recent weeks.

Cahana, whose work has been published in the New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

and National Geographic, spent six weeks in Tijuana this winter photographing the caravan.

She spent some of that time at the border, taking pictures of migrants colonists as they sought to cross a fence into the U.S. Cahana said she and other photographers present were occasionally harassed by U.S. Border Patrol agents, who on several occasions took photographs of her and other journalists who were working on the Mexican side of the border.

News Agency that Dare Not be Named photographer Daniel Ochoa, a Spanish citizen, said he was denied entry into Mexico as he tried to cross into Tijuana from San Diego on Jan. 20. He was detained for four hours before being turned back.

Like Cahana, Ochoa had photographed members of the migrant caravan, including those who sought to cross the border illegally. He said he too had been photographed by Border Patrol agents and that Mexican police also had taken a photograph of his passport.

Maduro Writes Letter To President Trump, Warns Against Military Intervention
[OANN] Embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro
Venezuela's attempt at producing a Muammar Qadaffy...
is said to be writing a letter to President Trump.

Dozens of Maduro supporters gathered in central Caracas on Wednesday to sign a petition against U.S. military intervention in Venezuela. The demonstrators highlighted their loyalty to the Maduro regime, and denounced opposition leader Juan Guaido. Their petition will be attached to Maduro’s letter to President Trump, which is expected to be sent in the coming days.

"I think that Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
will say anything to justify any action that the United States wants to have with the homeland of Bolívar. In fact, today, what is happening is a continuous coup d’état, which is in development." ‐ Victor Parra, Maduro supporter

This comes as interim President Guaido continues to denounce Maduro’s decision to block humanitarian convoys. He said the regime is continuing to starve the Venezuelan people.

Long, Strange Trip: How U.S. Ethanol Reaches China Tariff-Free
Posted by: Alaska Paul || 02/08/2019 12:40 || Comments || Link || [7 views] Top|| File under:

#1  Chicoms slap a 70% retaliatory tariff on US ethanol, in response to US tariffs on Chinese goods.

So 35,000 tonnes of ethanol was loaded in Texas. That is a lot of everclear if it has not been poisoned. The cargo was transferred to another vessel near Singapore, then 12,500 tonnes added in Malaysia.Blended with Asian ethanol, so no Chinese imposed tariff, and delivered to the port at Zhoushan, China. Expensive with all the transshipping and blending, but cheaper than a 70% tariff.
Check out the article, good graphic.

#2  A 70% tariff on all Chinese goods sounds pretty damn good.

#3  At the time it left Texas, the shipment was owned by units of SOCAR Trading SA, the marketing arm of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic, according to the bills of lading. The shipment was initially destined for the Philippines.

But after it crossed through the Panama Canal and reached the waters near Singapore in mid-August, the High Seas transferred its cargo to the QUDS, another tanker, according to the Refinitiv data.

Vincent Mohy, general counsel for SOCAR, said that the firm sold all of the U.S. ethanol at the time of the transfer to the QUDS and that it made clear to the buyer the fuel originated in the United States. Mohy declined to name the buyer.

Besides evading tariffs, it sounds like the buyer may be circumventing sanctions. Isn't Al Quds Brigade Iranian?

France recalls ambassador to Italy as diplomatic row deepens
[BBC] A diplomatic row between La Belle France and Italia has deepened, with La Belle France complaining of "unfounded attacks and outlandish claims" by Italian leaders.

La Belle France recalled its ambassador to Italia for talks on Thursday, saying the situation was "unprecedented" since the end of World War Two.

It comes after Italian Deputy PM Luigi Di Maio met French "yellow-vest" protesters near Gay Paree on Tuesday.

La Belle France warned him not to interfere in the country's politics.

Relations between the two countries - both founding members of the EU - have been tense since Italia's populist Five Star Movement and right-wing League party formed a coalition government in June 2018.

The two governments have clashed over a range of issues, including immigration.

Covington Catholic Teen's Lawyer: Hundreds in Media Will 'Pay a High Price' for Defamation
[PJ] One of the attorneys representing Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann and his family says he's confident that the media entities that smeared the 16-year-old boy will eventually be brought to justice in a Covington, Ky., courtroom.

"We clearly think that we're going to be able to get these issues in front of a jury, and frankly, that jury is most likely to be here in Covington Kentucky," said Sandmann family attorney Todd McMurtry Thursday. He added, "And this whole community knows what happened."

McMurtry spoke with Fox News Radio's Todd Starnes by phone, saying he and co-counsel L. Lin Wood will be taking "pretty strenuous legal action" against potentially hundreds of media entities to make right some of the wrongs that have forced the family into hiding and damaged the boy's reputation.

The teen's name was dragged through mud after a viral video clip showed him smiling at Native American activist Nathan Phillips during an incident at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., on January 18.

Government
Senate panel OKs 44 Trump judicial nominees
[Washington Examiner] The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved more than three dozen nominees to the federal bench, paving the way for a full vote before the Senate as President Trump continues to reshape the federal judiciary.

The nominees include six to the federal circuit courts, to which Trump has already appointed 30 judges. The Senate Judiciary Committee also approved 34 nominees to the federal district courts, two to the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and two to the U.S. Court of International Trade.

Five of the six nominees to the federal circuit courts were approved along party-lines.

The 44 judicial nominees passed out of the committee marks the most approved in a single markup since 1981.

The picks will now head to the full Senate where, if confirmed, they will join the 85 judges Trump has named to the federal bench, including two to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Senate is largely expected to confirm the nominees, as Republicans hold 53 seats.

The president’s success with installing federal judges has been a key achievement of his administration.

Trump took office with more than 100 judicial vacancies, and the Senate moved quickly to confirm his nominees, making a conservative imprint on the federal bench. In the first two years of his administration, Trump has appointed a historic number of judges to the federal circuit courts, outpacing the last five of his predecessors at the same point in their presidencies.

The judicial nominees approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday were nominated to their respective judgeships last year, but the Senate did not act on those nominations before the new Congress was sworn in. As a result, the White House renominated a slate of 51 judicial nominees last month.

Among those approved by the committee are two, Bridget Bade and Eric Miller, to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, considered the country’s most liberal circuit court. There are currently six vacancies on the San Francisco-based court, and if Trump fills all of the empty seats, it will bring the 9th Circuit closer to parity, with 13 judges appointed by Republicans and 16 appointed by Democrats.
