Pashtun jirga concludes another round of talks with TTP in Kabul
Onanistically negotiating with themselves while ignoring both the government of Pakistan, such as it is, and the governing Taliban in Afghanistan. What the army that owns Pakistan thinks of it is not herein revealed.
[Dawn] A 12-member Pashtun jirga wrapped up another round of talks with leaders of the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban

...isn’t that the Punjabi version, while the Afghan Talibs are Pashtun?
Kabul on Monday, in a bid to resolve issues regarding the merger of tribal areas with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and modalities for the return of the group’s members.

Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, who led the tribal elders, dispelled the impression of a deadlock in the talks and told Dawn.com that the three-day talks were held in a "conducive environment" in which both sides addressed each other's reservations.

"The negotiations did not fail but are continuing. Failure and success will be judged when the process reaches an end," he said, clarifying that the talks would fail when either side decides to halt the process.

"But this is not the case," he added. "We had interactions with the TTP and the officials of the Islamic Emirate. We met the TTP separately and also together with the officials of the Islamic Emirate," he said.

Barrister Saif, however, declined to share further details of the meetings, adding that the negotiations were underway "smoothly".

When asked about the TTP’s demand for restoration of the status of ex-FATA, he said "both sides have shared their reservations and are trying to address them."

The Pak delegation had left for Kabul on July 30 for its second round of TTP leadership. The previous round of talks was held on June 1-2.

Saif told Dawn.com that the TTP reiterated its demand of the restoration of the previous status of the tribal areas.

Earlier, the TTP had said that it did not accept the merger of ex-FATA with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. FATA was merged with the province in May 2018 through a constitutional amendment.

The TTP had announced a ceasefire for an indefinite period before Eidul Fitr. Despite this, Pak security forces have come under frequent attack, particularly in the volatile Wazoo districts. Attacks on the security forces from the Afghan side have also increased during this time.

Iran gains foothold in South America as Biden admin pursues nuclear deal
[FoxNews] Iran has been seeking to increase its influence in South America and undermine American interests and security, drawing little response from the Biden administration as it tries to salvage the Obama-era nuclear agreement with the country.

"The Iranian Revolutionary Guards are much more actively involved in subversive and assassination issues," James Phillips, the senior research fellow for foreign policy at the Heritage Foundation, told Fox News.

Phillips pointed to a 2011 plot to assassinate the Saudi Ambassador to the U.S. Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., noting that Iranian agents sought to partner with a Mexican drug cartel to carry out the plot on U.S. soil.

"This was over 10 years ago…. it's been going on a long time," Phillips said.

Iran's outreach in Latin America has seemingly begun to pick up again in recent years, most recently with the appearance of a mysterious Venezuelan-flagged plane in Argentina last month. The plane, belonging to a U.S. sanctioned Iranian operator, landed in Ezeiza with a crew of 14 Venezuelans and five Iranians, one of whom was a senior Iranian official.

According to reporting from the Wall Street Journal, the plane has since been seized and an investigation has been launched, but exactly why it was allowed to land in Argentina and what it was doing there remains somewhat a mystery.

Argentinian federal police searched the plane and found material used for military cyber defense operations on board, while it was reported that the captain of the plane was Gholamreza Ghasemi, a board member and manager of Fars Air Qeshm, a U.S. sanctioned Iranian airline.

Argentinian President Alberto Fernández has insisted there was nothing suspicious about the plane, while the country's security minister claimed the captain only coincidentally shared the same name as Ghasemi, a claim contradicted by Paraguayan intelligence and questioned by Argentinian members of Congress.

Though Iran has a long history of partnership with Venezuela, a country with a history of seeking to undermine American interests, Iranian cooperation with democratic Argentina would be a more troubling development for the U.S. in the region.

A week before the plane landed in Ezeiza, both Iran and Argentina applied for membership in the BRICS group, a group of five emerging economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The group, which has held an annual summit since 2009, has a significant influence over world affairs, casting itself as an alternative to U.S. dominated Western alliances.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson told Reuters that membership in BRICS would result in added values for both sides," while Russia boasted that the U.S. was failing to cut of its international influence amid its ongoing war in Ukraine.

Iranian influence in South America would be beneficial to Russia, which under President Vladimir Putin's leadership, has made it a goal to erode U.S. influence in the region.

"Moscow has been deepening ties with fellow authoritarian regimes in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, as part of a long-term strategy to establish permanent presence in the region," Rebekah Koffler the president of Doctrine & Strategy Consulting, former DIA intelligence officer, and the author of  "Putin’s Playbook: Russia’s Secret Plan to Defeat America, told Fox News.

Koffler said Russia's aims are not only to gain access to new markets and resources as much of the world attempts to isolate the country, but to demonstrate to the U.S. that it can operate militarily in America's backyard.

"Ultimately, Russia wants to build a formidable force posture on America's doorstep, as a deterrent, which Moscow could activate in the event of Washington intervening with Putin’s plans to re-establish control of Russia’s former Soviet states, such as Ukraine," Koffler said.

The mysterious plane in Argentina is not the only hint Iran is seeking to bolster its influence in Latin America. Earlier this year, Iranian Vice President for Economic Affairs Mohsen Rezaee was an invited guest to the inaugural ceremony of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. Rezaee, a former member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, is wanted in Argentina for allegedly masterminding the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires.

Ortega has long been a controversial leader and has faced accusations of authoritarian policies by international observers. His time in power has seen Nicaragua hit with multiple U.S. sanctions, while the State Department has criticized his support of "radical regimes" in Cuba and Iran as well as repeated attempts to undermine capitalism and U.S. interests.

There is also evidence that Iran has extended its influence as far north as Mexico. Hezbollah, which is designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. and European Union and receives military training, weapons, and financial support from Iran, has been gaining a foothold in Latin America for much of the last decade and has more recently made inroads with drug cartels in Mexico.

The Justice Department announced last month that the U.S. had extradited Adalberto Fructuoso Comparan-Rodriguez, a former mayor of Aguililla, Mexico and alleged leader of the United Cartels in Michoacán, Mexico, on drug trafficking charges.

According to the allegations, Comparan-Rodriguez met in Cali, Colombia with a drug trafficker believed to be associated with Hezbollah. Comparan-Rodriguez and an associate told the trafficker they could supply hundreds of kilograms of methamphetamine, eventually agreeing to send 500 kilograms of methamphetamine from Mexico into Texas, where they were then transported to Miami.

Law enforcement agencies were able to seize the drugs before they hit the streets after Comparan-Rodriguez was arrested by Guatemalan authorities, but the case demonstrated Hezbollah's growing influence in Latin America.

Hezbollah has a long documented history of operating in the tri-border area between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, while the organization has more recently expanded their reach to Venezuela. In 2019, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asserted that the terrorist organization now has "active cells" in Venezuela that pose a security risk to the U.S.

"People don’t recognize that Hezbollah has active cells – the Iranians are impacting the people of Venezuela and throughout South America," he said at the time. "We have an obligation to take down that risk for America."

However, the current administration has taken a different approach to the threat of Iran, abandoning the Trump administration's policy of maximum pressure in favor of trying to rekindle the Obama-era Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, largely known as the Iran nuclear deal.

Phillips said the new approach has been a mistake, arguing that the Biden administration has become complacent on Iran in an effort to salvage part of former President Obama's legacy.

'Literally a war zone': Noem questions whether VP Harris is 'aware she's in charge' of border
[JustTheNews] In South Dakota, "the increase in illegal drugs and activity has been dramatic since we've seen this open border," said GOP Gov. Kristi Noem.

South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem questions whether Vice President Kamala Harris, whom President Biden put in charge of managing U.S.-Mexico border policy, even knows she's in charge because she's "seen no activity from her."

Noem, a potential 2024 GOP presidential candidate, was asked for her assessment of Harris' job performance as the border czar.

"I don't even know if she's aware she's in charge, because I've seen no activity for her," Noem told Just the News during a roundtable with journalists ahead of her keynote address at the Young America's Foundation student conference on Thursday. "It's unfortunate."

Republicans on Capitol Hill often say that every state is a border state, given that the Biden administration is allowing the release of millions of illegal immigrants into the U.S. after they arrive at the border to make an asylum claim. Noem elaborated on the challenges her state is facing with illegal immigration.

"I think what's happening at the border is completely different than just illegal immigration," she said. "This is a national security threat because we don't have a secure border.

"When Arizona and Texas requested help, I sent my National Guard. In fact, I was the first governor to send National Guard. Most other governors were responding with law enforcement, but recognizing the unique situation we have down there, it literally is a war zone, so we had members volunteer to go as a unit to partner with the Texas Guard and work with Border Patrol, and they were there for a period of time.

"And now I'll be sending down some of my National Guard, Lakota helicopters, to help us with surveillance, but for us in particular, you know, I telegraphed pretty widely to my NGOs and nonprofits that if they cooperated with facilitating people that were crossing the border illegally in our state, that they would have a difficult time with their state contracts and licenses if they worked to break our federal laws in partnership with what this administration is doing."

Noem also said her state is having difficulty with the illegal drugs and human trafficking coming across the border.

"The drugs and human trafficking are devastating for our state," she said "I have nine Native American tribes, and they are sovereign governments. I don't have any authority or jurisdiction on their lands. And a lot of the drugs and trafficking that's happening that go out throughout the Midwest are being funneled through my tribal reservations.

"So there's very little law and order there. There's a lot of poverty and wide open spaces, and we've got some of the cartels that have a presence in South Dakota on our reservation land, and a lot of those drugs are moving through those areas. And I have very little that I can do to address it, so the increase in illegal drugs and activity has been dramatic since we've seen this open border."

Just the News asked Noem if her state is accepting illegal immigrants via bus or plane from the border. Washington D.C. is accepting thousands, and Mayor Muriel Bowser is asking the Biden administration for help.

"We have not seen that," said Noem. "And I haven't had reports of that in our state. I think it's because I have been pretty open and aggressive with our nonprofits on their activities and involvement on how that would be received."

Trump had the chance to kill al-Qaeda's leader but didn't because he didn't recognize the name, report says
[MSN - your source for fabricated news]
  • Then-President Trump had the option to kill al-Zawahiri, but chose not to, NBC reported in 2020.

  • Trump wanted to kill Osama bin Laden's son, Hamza bin Laden instead because it was the only name he knew, NBC said.

  • Trump confirmed in 2019 that the younger bin Laden had been killed in a US counterterrorism operation earlier on in his presidency.
Intelligence officials briefed Trump many times about senior terrorist figures the CIA wanted to track down and kill, specifically mentioning al-Zawahiri, NBC News reported.

But two people familiar with the briefings told NBC News that Trump chose not to pursue al-Zawahiri because he didn't recognize his name, and instead suggested targeting bin Laden's son, Hamza bin Laden.

"He would say, 'I've never heard of any of these people. What about Hamza bin Laden?'" one unnamed former official told NBC News.

A Pentagon official also told the news outlet: "That was the only name he knew."

#12  I suspect we knew where Al-Zawahiri was located for quite some time. The time was opportune and a bit desperate. Why?

1. Because Biden is viewed as a weak or non-leader by many, here and abroad. This was a chance to try change that image.
2, Biden's and the Dem polls are bad prior to 2022 and 2024 elections, another chance to try to change that.

Iraq
CF smashed the ‘independent government' with shoes, Al-Sadr's spokesperson
[SHAFAQ] The spokesperson for Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
...hereditary Iraqi holy man and leader of a political movement in Iraq. He had his hereditary rival al-Khoei assassinated shortly after the holy rival's appearance out of exile in 2003. Formerly an Iranian catspaw, lately he's gagged over some of their more outlandish antics, then went back to catspawry...
, Salah al-Obeidi, said that the Shiite Coordination Framework (CF) "smashed" the project of forming an independent government after naming Muhammad Shia al-Sudani for prime minister.

Al-Obaidi said in a statement, "The Frameworks' calls for dialogue are a new attempt to defraud, far from their suggestion to form the next government exclusively from independent figures."

He added, "The Framework forces started scrambling for positions, so they announced al-Sudani as their candidate, a step smashed the project of the independent government with shoes and distributed the positions among them so that the candidate of the doomed (Nuri al-Maliki) would win.

Tensions have worsened since an October election in which al-Sadr's movement emerged as the biggest bloc with 74 of parliament's 329 seats.

After failing to overturn the result in the courts, the Iran-backed factions set about stymying al-Sadr's efforts to form a government that would include his Kurdish and Sunni allies but excludes groups he described as corrupt or loyal to external forces.

Despite their diminished numbers in parliament, the Iran-aligned groups managed to frustrate al-Sadr by denying the two-thirds quorum needed to elect a Kurdish head of state - the first step towards forming a government.

Frustrated at the deadlock, Sadr instructed his politicians to quit parliament in June. The move ceded dozens of seats to the Coordination Framework, meaning it could try to form a government of its choosing, though this would risk al-Sadr's wrath.

Al-Sadr's rivals then floated a candidate, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, seen by al-Sadr's supporters as a Maliki loyalist. This step appears to have been the final straw for Sadr supporters, igniting the protests.

In a statement he issued earlier today, al-Sadr, the arch-foe of the Shiite Coordination Framework, instructed his followers to push for a complete overhaul of the political system, including a new constitution, and expel the country's elites whom he condemned as "corrupt."

In response, the Coordination Framework said it will defend "the legitimacy of the Iraqi state" against Moqtada al-Sadr's calls to "overthrow the state and constitution," calling for mass counter-demonstrations today.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
29 Bodies Exhumed From ISIS-Made Mass Grave In Syria’s Manbij
[NPASYRIA] The Civil Administration in Manbij said on Sunday that it had recovered 29 bodies, including women, from a mass grave discovered a few days ago, dating back to the period when the city was under the control of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS).

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), supported by the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, liberated Manbij from the terrorist organization in 2016 following fierce battles.

Following its liberation from ISIS, the Arabs, Kurds, Circassians and Turkmen, who constitute the fabric of Manbij, established their own administration under the name of Democratic Civil Administration of Manbij and its Countryside to run the affairs of their region. Then, this administration joined the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

On Wednesday, municipality workers, while cleaning a sewer, stumbled upon the bodies of three men handcuffed and blindfolded.

After that, a more extensive search was done, making the final toll 29 bodies.

In its Sunday’s statement, the Civil Administration in Manbij, affiliated with the AANES, suggested that the bodies belong to civilian prisoners during ISIS reign over the city.

The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) defeated ISIS militarily.

After ISIS took control of Manbij in early 2014, it carried out a campaign in which it arrested hundreds of the city’s residents on various charges, and took the basement under al-Madina hotel as a prison for it. It also conducted mass executions of prisoners and buried them in mass graves, according to residents of the area.

The administration condemned the massacres carried out by the holy warrior group against the residents. The deputy head of the Interior Board in Manbij Abdulkarim al-Bakkar said, "It is a massacre against humanity and shows the brutality of the organization."

Iran vows to build nukes if provoked, turn NY into 'hellish ruins'
[NYPOST] Iran
...The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both...
has reportedly threatened to build nuclear warheads and warned that it has the capability to turn New York into "hellish ruins" — amid stalled efforts to reinstate a nuclear deal between the county and world powers.

Two Telegram channels with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps posted a 2-minute video Saturday that vowed to quickly start building nuclear bombs if the "US or Zionist regime make any stupid mistakes," according to Iran International, a London-based news outlet.

The video claims secret underground facilities in Fordow, near Qom, are close to working to turn the Islamic Theocratic Republic into a nuclear power — and warned that its "peaceful nuclear program" could morph into a weaponized one with ease.

"The nuclear facilities of Fordow have been built deep under mountains of Iran and are protected against trench-busting bombs and even nuclear explosion," the video reportedly states. "All infrastructures required for nuclear breakout have been prepared in it."

The haunting video also claims that the Islamic Theocratic Republic has ballistic missiles capable of "turning New York into hellish ruins."
