Tunisia's interior ministry says president facing 'serious threats'
[AnNahar] Tunisia's President Kais Saied is the target of "serious threats", the interior ministry said Friday, 11 months since the head of state staged a dramatic power grab.

"According to credible information and investigations still underway, the president of the republic and the presidency as an institution are the target of serious threats," spokeswoman Fadhila Khelifi told journalists.

"There is a plan by groups both at home and abroad to target the security of the president" and to "damage state security and create chaos" in the North African country, she said.

She did not provide more details on the threats or their origin.

Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, a prominent left-wing politician and key Saied opponent, cast doubt over the claims.

"This is just to justify new arrests and to take Dire Revenge against his rivals," Chebbi told AFP.

"The president is politically isolated and is trying to stir up public sympathy."

Saied sacked the government and suspended parliament 11 months ago, later extending his powers over the judiciary and moving to change the constitution in decisive blow to the only democracy to emerge from the Arab Spring uprisings.

Some Tunisians have welcomed his moves against a system seen as corrupt and unable to tackle the country's deep social and economic issues.

But opponents, notably the Islamist-inspired Ennahdha party, have condemned his moves as a coup.

UK Court orders firm that sent nitrates to Beirut to reveal owner's identity
[An Nahar] The High Court of Justice in London has ordered Savaro Ltd to disclose the identity of its ultimate beneficiary owner who had sent the ammonium nitrate to Beirut on the Rhosus ship.

In august 2021, the Dechert LLP had filed an action in the High Court of London against Savaro on behalf of the Beirut Bar Association and a number of victims or their relatives of the Beirut Port Explosion.

Ten months later, a British judge ordered Savaro to disclose the identity of its owner within a deadline.

Lawyer Nasri Diab from the Beirut Bar Association Prosecution office and lawyer Kamil Abu Suleiman from the Dechert LLP stressed the importance of the court's decision, which gives hope to the victims, a few weeks away from the anniversary of the August 4 explosion.

Head of the Bar Association, Nader Kaspar, considered that the diligent work of the Public Prosecution Office constitutes a guarantee for the victims, despite all the obstacles and delays.

#2

Said in Jest. 😎

Invade Mexico,
Make it into 3 new protectorate states (Yucatán (Oil and cropland),
Baha (vacation/shipping port/Oil)
and Mid-to North Central area to Texas (Cropland & Oil).

Leave Mexico City and below to Mexico.

Register and make all Mexicans in these areas, US Residents and full voting Citizenship only after studying and taking a Citizenship test.

Then add them to the Tax rolls.

Arrest all Gang & Cartel Members (eg. MS-13) and confiscate all assets (et. $400+ Billion a year)

I am willing to bet some US Rich $$$$$ elite already own a lot down there now anyhow so tax it.

It would solve a few US Food corp, oil and expansion issues.

#4  Really, come on guys. Joe and Hunter are just looking for their cuts.

#5  The "related" article left out a key question that the rest of the media also conveniently ignores. Fentanyl is a "synthetic" drug, needs a chemical/pharmaceutical industrial process to create it. Where is this happening? Apparently the drug has to be made outside of US borders.
China used to get the blame for the bulk of production. IIRC, years ago Trump talked with Xi about having the PRC do something to decrease production and export of fentanyl. No further news coverage seen concerning this.
A recent report by the RAND corp (linked there from the Burg a few months ago) stated that MEXICO is now the major producer of illicit fentanyl. I doubt this is happening in small basements & caves. All the cruise missiles we have are either going to Ukraine or going to waste.

#6  The Burg came through again. Reading more of today's posts, I found this in one:
Mexico is currently the dominant source for drugs manufactured in clandestine labs using easy-to-purchase precursors from China. The vast majority of the drugs enter overland across the southern border, after which the pills are often moved by regular postal and courier services.

#7  Pushing the Mexican president to combat fentanyl smuggling is deflection at it's very worst. But it's not unexpected from the reptiles who run our government.

Fentanyl is our problem and it's up to Biden to do something about it. But, like P2k said, Joe and Hunter get their cuts from this business and I suspect many Republicans are in on it too. Otherwise the border would have been secured a long, long time ago.

One of the many reasons they all hate Trump is that he really would have put a stop to this nonsense and all the Swamp Creatures would have missed the money.

#8  And there is no need to agonize over the people who die or become disabled by narcotics smuggled over the border. They can easily be replaced by people smuggled over the border.

No evidence of Iraqi migrants killed on Polish border, Baghdad says
[Rudaw] Iraq on Thursday denied the arbitrary killing of Iraqi migrants colonists on the Polish border following Belarusian claims that "mass executions" were carried out against Iraqis on the Belarus-Poland border earlier this year.

A Belarusian investigative committee on Tuesday claimed that "criminal actions" were taken against 135 Iraqis by Polish security forces leading to the death of a number of them, alleging that information of "mass execution" and "secret burial" of Iraqi migrants colonists was disclosed to the Belarusians by a polish army deserter.

Iraq’s foreign ministry addressed the recent claims which accused Polish forces of committing a number of human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
violations against Iraqi migrants colonists, saying there was no evidence of the execution of Iraqis on Poland’s border.

"The foreign ministry’s procedures regarding migrants colonists started last February and the killing of migrants colonists has not been proven to us," state media reported the ministry’s spokesperson Ahmed al-Sahaf as saying.

Nonetheless, he stressed that Iraqi migrants colonists have passed away to varying circumstances.

Tens of thousands of mostly young Kurds left the Kurdistan Region for Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
last year in search of a better life, using people’s smuggling routes.

A number of these migrants colonists died in freezing temperatures on the Belarus-Poland border and others drowned in the sea, suffering a catastrophic fate.

Erbil and Baghdad accused Minsk of exploiting the migrants colonists for political gains against the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
. In mid-November, Iraq began offering free flights to those who chose to return voluntarily.

Over 3,800 Iraqis and Kurds returned voluntarily, Sahaf noted while emphasizing that the rate of migration increased "strangely" last year.

Around 37 thousand people left Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in the first 10 months of 2021, according to a refugee foundation.

US transfers Guantanamo Bay detainee after court ruling
[Dawn] The Pentagon said on Friday it had transferred an Afghan detainee who was held at Guantanamo Bay for 15 years, a move that comes after a court ruled the United States had no legal justification to hold him.

Al-Khazali calls for new elections, amending the law; Iranian catspaw’s political wing withdraws from parliament
[SHAFAQ] The Secretary-General of Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq, Qais al-Khazali, called on the political forces to reach a political agreement for reelection.

Al-Khazali considered that the resignation of the Sadrist bloc's deputies made the problem "deeper and more complicated," stressing, "it is not possible to form a government in these circumstances, and it can't succeed."

"I call for a political agreement to reelection after amending the electoral law, canceling electronic voting, and making essential changes in the High Electoral Commission." He added.

Yesterday, Iraq's parliament swore in 64 new politicians to replace 73 members of a bloc led by Moqtada Tater al-Sadr

after the influential Shiite Moslem holy man asked them to step down amid a prolonged stalemate over forming a government.

Party linked to Iran-backed militia withdraws from Iraqi parliament

[Rudaw] The political wing of the Iran-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah on Thursday announced its withdrawal from the Iraqi parliament, refusing to fill the vacant seats left by previously resigned Sadrist MPs.

Hussein Muanas, head of the Huquq Movement, announced in a video statement on Thursday the resignation of the political bloc from the Iraqi parliament.

"We have made a decision to withdraw from the Council of Representatives and not fill the seats of the resigned MPS because we will not become substitutes for the brothers in the Sadrist bloc," said Muanas.

Muanas added that their withdrawal does not affect their support for the formation of an Iraqi government, stressing that the party will not "deviate" from representing the people.

The withdrawal of Huquq comes as influential Shiite holy man and leader of the Sadrist Movement Moqtada Tater al-Sadr on Wednesday urged the parliamentary blocs not to be intimidated by the "illegal" pressures, referring to Iran, asking political parties to take a "brave stance for reformation and saving the homeland."

Huquq, an ally of the Coordination Framework, had secured one seat following Iraq’s October elections and were bound to get five additional seats following the resignation of the Sadrists earlier this month.

The movement refrained from attending the parliament’s exceptional session on Thursday where a total of 64 new members of the Iraqi parliament were sworn in, replacing the majority of the resigned MPs. Nine seats remain vacant.

Sadr asked all 73 MPs of his bloc to submit their resignations to the parliament’s speaker on June 12, in an effort to put an end to the political impasse that has plagued Iraq since October’s elections. The resignations were approved by Mohammed al-Halbousi soon after.

Iraq continues to be shrouded in political instability with the country yet to form its next government a staggering eight months following the October elections.

The Coordination Framework was the Sadrist Movement’s most formidable opponent before the withdrawal of the latter, opposing Sadr’s attempts at forming a national majority government and insisting on forming a government based on political consensus.
