A Closer Look at the Kabul School Bombing
Background to the story reported here and here. Not mentioned in these articles but brought out in comments yesterday is that the neighbourhood is primarily Hazera Shiite, and the bombers were probably ISIS, which has attacked Shiite schools in that area before.
[ToloNews] It was a quiet Saturday afternoon and hundreds of girls were leaving the school when the deadly incident occurred. Suddenly many students found themselves among smoke and blood and debris from a car kaboom that happened in front of the entrance gate of Sayed-ul-Shuhada High School in the west of Kabul.

The car kaboom was followed by two IED blasts that were placed nearby, according to the Ministry of Interior, which put the corpse count at 52. But eyewitnesses and victims’ relatives said 63 people--most of whom were schoolgirls--were killed and at least 150 more were maimed.

Residents said the students were leaving the school when the boom-mobile detonated.

Two more blasts happened shortly after the first.

No group has so far grabbed credit for the attack.

The school enrolls over 7,000 students in two shifts. The late shift, in which the blasts happened, contained at least 2,000 girls.

Videos shared on social media show victims’ families tirelessly searching for their loved ones whose bags and clothes were left in the area, ripped open by the blast.

"All are innocent children... All are underage girls. All were martyred mercilessly. One didn’t have legs, another didn’t have a head," said Abdul Latif, a resident of the Dasht-e-Barchi area in Kabul.

"The car (that went kaboom!) was parked there from 1pm that day... And the incident happened after 4pm. If you do not see this Mr. Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money...
, leave the power, and don’t bother people," said Hadi, a resident of Dasht-e-Barchi in Kabul.

All of the students who were killed or maimed were under 18 years old.

"The enemies of the people of Afghanistan and the enemies of Islam will never be able to defeat us by such acts. We will send our children to school to defeat their enemies with education and pen," said Marzia, a resident of the area.

"It shows the cruelty of the terrorist groups who killed our children and youth to fuel a psychological war," said Mahmoud Abdullah, a resident of the area.

Om Sunday, the relatives of the victims were still searching for the belongings of their loved ones at the blast scene. Sunday afternoon. Sediqa Jafari, who is blind and lives in the area, said they are tired and there is no more space for them to suffer such pain.

"Anyone who does this in this holy month will be defeated and is a cruel enemy. It is evident who does this," Sediqa said.

Two more attacks targeted education centers in the west of Kabul in less than two years, killing dozens of students.

"We are working thoroughly to find the perpetrators of the case to punish them," Interior Ministry’s front man Tariq Arian said.

Dasht-e-Barchi residents said the repeat of deadly attacks in the west of Kabul shows that the government "has failed" to ensure the safety of the area.

Most School Attack Victims Were From Low-Income Families

[ToloNews] The triple blasts near a school in the west of Kabul on Saturday took 63 lives, many of whom were female students from poor families living in Dasht-e-Barchi, one of the most low-income areas in Kabul.

Their ages ranged from 13 to 18 years old and they were attending classes from 7 to 12th grade at school. Some of them paid their expenses from carpet weaving.

Kamila, 13, was the only literate person in her family. She sought education to help her family get of their current economic situation. Gulsoom, 17, another victim, wanted to become a pilot.

The school is located near a hillside, surrounded by mostly one-story houses, most of which are made of mud.

"She did carpet weaving at nights and studied during the day so that she could continue her education and afford her expenses," Kamila’s mother said.

"It is hard for me to go to school and study because we have lost our hope in the government," said Zahra, Kamila’s sister.

Tahira, who shared a class with her sister Gilsoom--who was killed--survived the attack but is maimed. Tahira, too, paid for her and her family’s needs with carpet weaving.

"She earned 200 Afs a day and spent it for her needs at school," Gulsoom’s mother Masooma said.

"Our family said she should not go to school because her future would not be guaranteed, but I insisted that she should go to school because it was a state school," said Husain, the brother of a victim.

Raihana, another victim, also wanted to become a pilot.

Kamila, who was killed in the blast, wanted to become a police officer, according to their relatives.

"I saw the first body, I saw the second, and the third was my own Raihana," said Mohammad Ali, Raihana’s father.

"We went to school together that day. She (Raihana) was very happy compared to other days. She told me that she was very happy that day," said Habiba, Raihana’s sister.

Tahira says her wounds from the blast are minor but the pain from losing her sister has given her a bigger pain.

Families of the students said they have lost their hope for the future as they have no idea if they will be able to continue to send their children to school.

Taliban ‘utilized their full strength’ to take strategic areas
[KhaamaPress] Acting Minister of Defense General Yasin Zia in a presser on Saturday said that the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
utilized their full strength in the past week to some of the strategic areas in some six provinces of Afghanistan, but ANDSF foiled and rebuffed all their planning.

Zia added that over 1,000 Taliban fighters have been killed and maimed while encountering Afghan National Defense and Security forces in Kandahar, Helmand

Taliban leader demanded more prisoners’ release, removal from sanction list
[KhaamaPress] Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
leader Mullah Hibatullah in his annual message before Eid-ul-Fitr called on the United States to implement all aspects of the Doha agreement.

Hibatullah stressed the release of remaining detainees, who should have been released three months after the negotiations began, he added that the prisoners have not yet been released.

He also demanded that Islamic Emirate’s leadership and officials should be removed from the sanction and reward list.

The Taliban leader also warned the United States to honor its obligations under the Doha agreement, and failure to comply with the agreement will put US forces responsible for the consequences.

Haibatullah also accused the Afghan government of sabotaging the grinding of the peace processor, he said negotiations are a priority for the Taliban and that the Taliban has appointed a strong team to negotiate with the opposing party.

On the contrary, Kabul’s administration has repeatedly tried to sabotage the current political process and the grinding of the peace processor, Taliban leader blamed Afghanistan’s Islamic Theocratic Republic.

Taliban’s leader remarks come as battle has raged and fierce festivities are ongoing between both warring parties.

Earlier Today, President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money...
blamed the Taliban for Sayed-ul-Shuhada (girls high school) attack in which many civilians including school children were killed and maimed.

President Ghani stressed that the Taliban wants to sabotage the grinding of the peace processor in Afghanistan.
Tolo News has more from that Eid message. It’s amusing how many misdirections and outright lies can be counted in his paragraphs:
Taliban
...Arabic for students...
leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada in an Eid message on Sunday said that "we shall have an Afghan-inclusive Islamic system in which all people shall feel a sense of representation based on their abilities and skills, and none shall have their rights violated."

The Taliban leader called on "Afghans in the opposition ranks to end all attempts at continuing the war," saying: "We must unite upon Islamic injunctions and protect ourselves from all discord and prejudice."

"The arms of the Islamic Emirate (the term used for Taliban movement) are wide open for all Afghans that have previously stood in opposition to us," he said.

"We are extending our hand of amnesty and affection, and inviting them to join the path of truth," Mullah Hibatullah said.

Mullah Hibatullah called for the implementation of the Doha agreement and said if the US "fails once again to live up to its commitments, the world must bear witness and hold America accountable for all the consequences."

He says they are ready to protect the independence and illusory sovereignty of Afghanistan at any cost.

Before this, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, a top negotiator for the Taliban in Doha, said that the Taliban does not intend to seize power through military struggle.

As the timeline for a US-proposed peace conference on Afghanistan in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
approaches, Stanekzai made the remarks during a virtual meeting with envoys from the UN, Norway, Sweden, Germany, US and the UK.

Stanekzai clarified that forming a coalition government was not a solution to the conflict, saying there is a need for a strong centralized Islamic government in which the rights of every Afghan citizen is protected, not a few.

"The Islamic Emirate does not accept a coalition government. There is a need for a strong centralized Islamic system, a system in which every Afghan sees their rights, not a few people, a system in which the rights of every Afghan national is reflected," said Stanekzai.

He also said that the conditional release of 7,000 Taliban prisoners and the removal of names of Taliban leaders from the UN blacklist were key to moving the grinding of the peace processor forward.

"Whenever a member of our delegation wants to go and meet our leaders or military commanders, it takes them days and this causes a disruption in the grinding of the peace processor," said Stanekzai, indirectly asking for the removal of Taliban names from the UN blacklist.

The Taliban negotiator also made assurances that Afghan women will be allowed to play a role in the political process of the country and that freedom of speech will be included in the framework of Islamic Sharia.

"There is a contrast in the Taliban’s words and actions. If the Taliban really wants to prove their words true, then they must engage in purposeful talks and announce a ceasefire," said Ilyas Wahdat, the former governor of Paktika
...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo...
"The republic should be supported, both Afghans and foreigners must support the republic. It is very important," said MP Abrarullah Murad.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, Odius Sepulcher called for war against the Visigoths...
US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has said that the US will stand with Afghans who support the Republic if the Taliban do not choose the path for peace.

He made the remarks after concluding a trip to the region in which he visited Tashkent, Doha Kabul and Dushanbe. He said that he attended a meeting with their allies in Berlin.

Europe
'Civil war is brewing': Serving French soldiers send Macron another chilling warning following earlier letter from retired generals calling for military action against 'Islamists'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Open letter by a group of serving French soldiers published late on Sunday

  • Soldiers warn Macron that the 'survival' of France is at stake after he made 'concessions' to Islamism

  • It echoes the tone of a similar letter printed last month which warned of civil war

  • The previous letter, signed by 1,000 people including serving officers and some 20 semi-retired generals, warned of the 'disintegration' of France because of radical Islamic 'hordes' living in the suburbs

  • The new letter is also open to be signed by the public, with Valeurs Actuelles saying more than 93,000 had done so by Monday morning

  • The authors described themselves as active-duty soldiers from the younger generation of the military, a so-called 'generation of fire' that had seen active service

  • A poll published last month by news channel La Chaîne Info has found that 58 per cent supported the letter, while 42 per cent were opposed

  • Among respondents who vote for Marine Le Pen the proportion of those who supported the letter rose to 86 per cent

The Grand Turk
Turkey Says No Country Can Expel It From F-35 Program
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
has affirmed that no country from the F-34 program can exclude it from the multinational program.

"This one-sided step neither complies with the spirit of alliance nor is it based on legitimate reasons," Defense Industry President Ismail Demir said in a statement.

"We said that no country can be excluded from the F-35 program unilaterally. The last letter from the US justified us," he emphasized.

An official from the Pentagon said in April that the US notified Turkey that it was officially expelled from the program.

He added that according to the statement sent to Ankara, the Joint Memorandum of Understanding opened to participant countries' signature in 2006 and signed by Turkey on January 26, 2007, has been canceled and Turkey was not included in the new agreement.

Other participants of the program were the US, UK, Italia, Netherlands, Australia, Denmark, Canada, and Norway.

Turkey has ordered more than 100 of the F-35 fighter jets, spending $1.4 billion while its defense industry has invested significant sums into the warplanes’ production.

It threatened to resort to legal means after Washington halted delivery to Tukey in July 2019.

Turkey signed a deal with Russia to purchase a new batch of Russian-made S-400 missile defense systems.

A defense company owned by Turkey’s main defense industrial agency signed a contract with the Arnold & Porter law firm to provide "strategic advice and outreach" in a bid to persuade US policymakers to readmit Turkey to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program.

In December, US President Donald Trump
...dictatorial for repealing some (but not all) of the diktats of his predecessor, misogynistic because he likes pretty girls, homophobic because he doesn't think gender bending should be mandatory, truly a man for all seasons......
imposed sanctions on Turkey by virtue of Katsa. The sanctions included four officials from the Defense Industry Ministry in addition to depriving Turkey of defense loans that exceed $10 million.

#1  100 F-35s will cost way more than the $1.4B in the article. Depending on the version that they want to buy the cost per plane is about $50-80 M each. After that is the cost of O&M which is perhaps $2-5M per year per plane.

Anyway we shouldn't sell them any for lots of reasons.

Iraq
Iraq's Heritage Battered by Desert Sun, Rain and State Apathy
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] One of the world's oldest churches is crumbling deep in Iraq's desert, another victim of years of conflict, government negligence and climate change in a country with a rich heritage.

After Pope Francis
...Argentine liberation theologist, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He was elected pope in 2013. Rather than setting up shop in Avignon, where he belongs, the first Jesuit Pope chose to reside in the Domus Sanctae Marthae guesthouse instead of the papal apartments. He is big on climate change, against consumerism, and in favor of throwing a blanket over homosexual activity within the clergy. He's not real sure about the Resurrection, about Christ's divinity, and a few other things that would have gotten him burned at the stake a few hundred years ago, but he's hot for a certain South American Earth Mother Goddess...
made a historic visit to Iraq in March, many Iraqis hoped that busloads of tourists would flock to Al Aqiser church southwest of the capital Baghdad.

PM al-Kadhimi: Baghdad-Erbil cooperation will halt terrorist attacks

Al-Kadhimi responds to ''demonization attempts'', and reiterates his position of unlawful arms
[SHAFAQ] The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, accused parties he did not name of "demonizing" the Prime Minister, but "neutrality" thwarted that scheme, affirming that no party has the right to possess arms outside the purview of the state.

In a meeting with Iraqi TV presenters, al-Kadhimi said, "the decision of refraining from running to the upcoming elections was taken from the first moment of this government," adding, "it [the government] came in exceptional circumstances. Iraq was going through a crisis, and there was a clear disagreement between social and political forces."

Al-Kadhimi stressed the necessity of "confining weapons to the hands of the state only. This government has fought the uncontrolled weapon from the first moment and fights any party that tries to exploit any address to carry weapons," adding, "If we want to build a real Iraq, we have to think about addressing this issue."
He added, "there was no decision to form a party, but unfortunately it is known that the prime minister usually establishes a political project," noting, "his political project is to serve the people and succeed in implementing just and fair elections that restore the citizen's confidence in the political system. Today, confidence in the elections must be restored."

Al-Kazemi pointed out, "Some have tried to demonize the prime minister, but what has been agreed upon by the people has been proven to be neutral at this stage."

"Some tried, more than once, to accuse the government and the prime minister of false accusations. However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
when he was assigned [Al-Kadhimi], there was a clear message to the political elite to support the upcoming elections and the political blocs that won the formation of this government, bring a prime minister from these blocs to assume responsibility."

The Prime Minister continued, "It is illogical and fair that the political blocs fail to agree after each election. They are looking for a political figure outside the political framework, so the parties must bear the responsibility."

"Iraq has gone through difficult circumstances from 2003 to 2020, the demonstrations produced as well as chaos, and among the chaos was the runaway arms and the arms that fought ISIS and defeated ISIS. Some tried to exploit this weapon under multiple titles, once under the title of expelling the occupier, and one under the heading of protecting unruly gangs to blackmail businessmen and the state."

The prime minister pledged to "continue to fight every weapon that threatens the entity of the Iraqi state," stressing, "Iraq is tired of wars and now is the moment has come to build stability. Stability cannot be built with the presence of runaway weapons."

"We called for a national dialogue for all parties, including the turbans, to sit at the dialogue table and address the reasons for the existence of this weapon."

Al-Kadhimi denied that the government was subjected to "any pressure from any party, and the opposite is true," noting, "there are Shiite political parties and others, pushing for the establishment of a political entity to run in the elections, but I refused."
