#3  Call me old fashioned, but I think they need to post sharpshooters, and eliminate the attempts of the putschists to inflict serious bodily harm. The common law, the U.S. Constitution, federal law, and commonsensical prudence require such countermeasures.

Granted, somehow, as a measure of grace, they could fire rubber bullets or other “less than Lethal” rounds, and aim for appendages — but something has to tame the beast. The Constitution only provides for “the right of the people peaceably to assemble,” and these are not peaceable assemblies — they’re riots.

#8  I'm listening to this nonsense at the moment. Democrats claim that Trump wants violent confrontation between rioters and federal troops to bolster his campaign for reelection. They accuse Barr of launching Operation Legend to help with Trump's reelection while ignoring daily attacks on the federal building in Portland. It is truly sickening to watch.

#20  There certainly seems to be a particular virulence and urgency in the Democrat attacks on Barr. The dishonesty and disregard for pertinent facts is so obvious that they all look like fools. But why would they show themselves to be such fools if they truly believed that Trump will be defeated in November and Barr will be replaced by Kieth Ellison in January 20201? The virulence and urgency would seem to caused by desperation and fear that Trump will be re-elected and Barr will allow Durham's investigation to ultimately prove the politicization of Obama's Justice Department.

#23  Post sharp shooters and target the sources of the lasers that are being used and the mortars.

Can sharpshooters use paintballs? Nothing says I’m a laughingstock more than having to step away from the riot after getting hit by a bruising bunch of paintballs... not to mention the very sobering thought that tomorrow night it might be bullets. Ditto with red laser sights — everyone knows serious shooters use red laser sights ‘cause we see it in the movies and television shows. And it would be helpful to have spotter video of the rioter before and during the shot, if that’s possible.

Another thing that came out is that we have some friggin rude members of Congress on the committee. Many of the questions by majority members came out sounding like "When did you stop beating your wife." Moreover the Dems are sticking with their story that the demonstrations were peaceful. They are operating in an alternative reality.

Sudan's civilian state governors take constitutional oath
[Al Ahram] Sudan's newly-appointed civilian state governors on Monday took the constitutional oath.

The state governors expressed commitment to improving citizens' living conditions in the presence of Chairman of Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and Chief Justice Nemat Abdallah.

On July 22, Hamdok appointed 18 civilian governors for the states, including two women for the first time.

The appointment of state governors had faltered for about 10 months amid differences over the structures of Sudan's transitional authority.

Trump picks antiwar favorite Douglas Macgregor to be German ambassador
McGregor led the Battle of 73 Easting in Iraq in The Gulf War in February 1991. He has often been referred to as a "renegade." IHMO, renegade reads like a war fighter. He would replace Ambassador Richard Grenell, another lightning rod--a good pick
[NYPost] President Trump announced Monday that he will nominate retired Army Col. Douglas Macgregor to be the next US ambassador to Germany.

Macgregor is a favorite among Trump supporters who want to pull US troops from the Mideast and Afghanistan. As ambassador, he would oversee Trump’s plan to slash the substantial US troop presence in Germany.

Trump said this year he wants to halve the 52,000 US troops in Germany. The Pentagon in June developed plans to withdraw 9,500.

Macgregor speaks fluent German, a source told The Post, and is reputed to be an expert on Germany’s history.

Opponents of former White House national security adviser John Bolton lobbied Trump last year to fire Bolton and replace him with Macgregor. That post ultimately went to US hostage negotiator Robert O’Brien.

Macgregor gained a following pushing a non-interventionist message on Fox News. He told Tucker Carlson in January that Trump should pull US troops out of Afghanistan because he "that’s why we voted for him."

The former colonel, who served in the Gulf War, also urged Trump to withdraw troops from Syria.

A White House release says Macgregor "is widely recognized as an expert on force design and grand strategy. He is a frequent radio and television commentator on national security affairs and his writings on military affairs have been influential in the transformation of United States ground forces, NATO, and the Israeli Defense Force."

Former US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell stepped down last month after serving as acting US intelligence director. Grenell, who is gay, led a Trump administration campaign to decriminalize homosexuality around the world.
Grenell was reputed to bring a "Trumpian" approach to relations with German officials. He was a key figure in Trump strategic initiatives, including a campaign to stop a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany and to pressure allies to isolate Iran.

#10  EC - yes, it was - check this out. I did a stats paper back in college (mainframe BMDP 2R stats package) on the dollar / DM exchange rate and right around 1986-1987 that's what it was.

I still have that paper and it's amazing / sad that I'm reading this thing and I have trouble understanding some parts of it. Can't remember what Prof. Karson gave me for a grade on it - I'll go w/ a B+.

I then used that paper to advise my German professor (UNH, Durham NH) to buy DM's now because the change in US interest rates was gonna make it more expensive for him to exchange for DM's later (he was going over there for a few weeks at that point). That was an oral final and I fucked it up six ways to Sunday because I couldn't remember a lot of the 100 German words relating to statistics in explaining what I came up with. That one was A for effort and something else for execution.
Posted by: Raj || 07/28/2020 21:48 Comments || Top||

#11  FWIW, I wrote that paper on May 20, 1986; the DM / $ exchange rate was approaching 2 / 1, and the major factors were relative inflation rates, inflation rates & their money supplies.

Granted I'm half in the bag right now but it's a pretty decent paper.

Being Muslim in Germany's Bundeswehr means no pastoral care
[DW] Lieutenant Nariman Hammounti-Reinke risked her life for Germany in Afghanistan. But, on a religious level she feels left out by the Bundeswehr, despite the growing number of Muslim troops in the country's army.
Inside baseball about the bureaucratic maneuverings that have not yet succeeded in getting a Muslim chaplain hired for the military snipped. The key bit as far as we’re concerned is:
The numbers speak for themselves. Almost 185,000 soldiers are currently serving in the Bundeswehr. Of those, around 53,400 are Protestant and almost 41,000 Catholic. Estimates suggest some 300 soldiers are followers of the Jewish faith and some 3,000 are Muslim. Not too long ago, the outgoing Protestant military bishop, Sigurd Rink, estimated there were between 3,000 and 4,000 followers of Islam currently serving in the Bundeswehr.

The Grand Turk
Top Turkey cleric attacked over Hagia Sophia sermon
[Al Ahram] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
's top holy man has been attacked for comments deemed offensive to the modern republic's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk during a sermon at Istanbul's iconic Hagia Sophia which was reconverted to a mosque.

Ali Erbas, head of the top religious body known as Diyanet,
... Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs...
presided over prayers at the monument on Friday at a ceremony attended by President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really more important...
and thousands of others.

The prayers followed a court ruling to annul a 1934 decree making Hagia Sophia a museum under the new republic born from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire.

Hagia Sophia was built as a cathedral during the Christian Byzantine Empire in the sixth century. It was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453.

But Erdogan signed a decree this month handing the building's control to Diyanet, so that it can operate as a mosque, a move which sparked criticism from the West.

In his Friday sermon, Erbas said: "Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror endowed and entrusted this outstanding place of worship as the apple of his eye to believers on condition that it should remain a mosque until the last day.

"Any property that is endowed is inviolable in our belief and burns whoever touches it; the charter of the endower is indispensable and whoever infringes upon it is cursed.

"Therefore, from that day to the present, Hagia Sophia has been the sanctuary of not only our country but also of Prophet Muhammad's ummah," Erbas added, referring to the Moslem community.

- 'QUIT'-
Opposition parties denounced Erbas, saying his comments clearly targeted Ataturk.

Ozgur Ozel of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) said: "You cannot curse Ataturk while you sit at the chair of Diyanet founded by Ataturk.

"Ali Erbas, I swear that you will pay the price of damning Ataturk," Ozel said on Twitter.

The right-wing Iyi (Good) Party on Monday lodged a complaint against Erbas, accusing him of "violating the untouchable articles of the Ottoman Turkish constitution".

On social media, the hashtag "Ali Erbas, know your place" was a trending topic.

One Twitter user, @yanikmehmetali, wrote: "When did you pray for Ataturk during your presidency? @DIBAliErbas, do not stay at Diyanet founded by Ataturk, quit."

The Ottoman Turkish government has long been accused by its secular opponents of forcing Islamic values on the predominantly Moslem but strictly secular country.

Erbas however denied the claims, in an interview with Hurriyet daily.

"I referred to the future, not to the past," he said.

"Ataturk died 82 years ago. Prayers are said for anyone who dies, not curses."
