Afghanistan
Taliban demand new constitution for Afghanistan at rare talks in Russia
[DAWN] The Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
demanded a new constitution for Afghanistan and promised an "inclusive Islamic system" to govern the war-torn country at a rare gathering with senior Afghan politicians in Russia on Tuesday that excluded the Kabul government.

The Death Eaters' manifesto, outlined in Moscow before some of Afghanistan's most influential leaders, comes a week after the Taliban held unprecedented six-day talks with US negotiators in Doha about ending the 17-year war.

Read: Kabul sees Taliban-Afghan opposition talks in Moscow as betrayal

The Doha and Moscow discussions, though entirely separate, both excluded the government in Kabul, where President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
is seen as increasingly sidelined from key negotiations for peace in his country.

The Moscow meeting ‐ the Taliban's most significant with Afghan politicians in recent memory ‐ saw the Death Eaters praying together with sworn enemies including former president Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
...One of the more egregious mistakes of the post 9-11 era...
as they discussed their vision for the future.

"The Kabul government constitution is invalid. It has been imported from the West and is an obstacle to peace," Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai

, who headed the Taliban delegation, told attendees at a central Moscow hotel.

"It is conflicted. We want an Islamic constitution," he said, adding that the new charter would be drafted by Islamic scholars.

No representatives from the Kabul government were invited to Moscow but some of Ghani's chief rivals ‐ including Karzai as well as opponents in an election slated for July ‐ were in attendance.

Afganistans youth wary of future with the Taliban
[Reuters] Afghanistan's Generation Z has grown up in a 17-year window shadowed by warfare and a heavy international presence, but now faces an uncertain future and the possibility of stark change.

Peace talks between the United States and Taliban are ramping up, which could see the hardline group take on a formal role in government, while U.S. President Donald Trump is reported to be mulling cutting the number of U.S. troops, which peaked at 100,000 in the early 2010s and is now at about 14,000.

No one knows what form a new government may take or how much control the Taliban might have under any deal, but for young people who were babies when the Taliban were driven from power by a U.S.-led campaign in 2001, the prospect of peace with the hardline Islamists brings a daunting mix of hope and fear.

Saudi Arabia and Arab allies armed Al-Qaeda in Yemen: CNN
[ALMASDARNEWS] According to CNN’s exclusive report, Soddy Arabia

An investigation, carried out by CNN, has found that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates had allegedly used weapons provided to them by the United States as currency to buy off militias and factions in the Yemeni conflict.

By handing US-made weapons over to third parties, the Saudi-led coalition is violating the terms of its arms sales with the United States, CNN claimed. A Defense Department official has confirmed to the broadcaster that Washington is investigating the issue.

Saudi Arabian and US authorities have yet to comment on the media report.

In Yemen’s chaos, jihadists and Iran are getting hold of US weapons
[IsraelTimes] Pentagon investigating apparent Saudi, UAE violations of commitments not to transfer American arms to Yemeni factions.

The Pentagon has launched an investigation into alleged Saudi transfers of US military hardware, from rifles to armored vehicles and tanks, to the hands of Islamist radical groups in Yemen.

Some of the hardware, which was transferred in contravention of legally binding commitments to obtain US permission before doing so, has even ended up in the hands of Iran-allied Houthi

Muslims say Germany should provide Bundeswehr with imams
[DW] The Bundeswehr provides Catholic and Protestant clergy for soldiers, but no spiritual counsel for Moslems. According to the government, key questions must be answered before the Bundeswehr's religious ranks are expanded.

Nariman Reinke, a naval petty officer, is one of about 1,500 Moslem soldiers who serve in the Bundeswehr.

Born to Moroccarn parents in 1979, Reinke has been in the military since 2005 and has twice deployed to Afghanistan. But being a Moslem woman in the German military is not always easy, she told DW.

2nd former PVV parliamentarian converts to Islam
[DutchNews] A second former PVV politician has converted to Islam, this time after having a change of heart while writing what was supposed to be a critical book.

Joram van Klaveren, who left the PVV after leader Geert Wilders led an anti-Moslem chant in 2014 and formed his own party, told the NRC that his view on Islam changed while writing and that he has now formally converted.

’If you believe in one god and that Mohammed was a prophet, alongside Jesus and Moses, then you are a Moslem,’ Van Klaveren, who has orthodox Protestant roots, told the paper.

During his seven years as an MP for the anti-Moslem party, Van Klaveren was an outspoken critic of Islam, commissioning texts with phrases such as ’Islam is a lie’ and ’the Koran is poison’.

Asked how he deals with the anti-Moslem sentiment he helped create, Van Klaveren said he is constantly being asked if he hates gay people, has plans to go to Syria or can stroke dogs.

’I have contributed to creating and maintaining that bad image of Islam, but you cannot imagine how preconceptions work, until you have to deal with them yourself,’ he said.

In 2013, a former councillor for the PVV in The Hague launched a political party founded on Islamic principles. Arnoud van Doorn converted to Islam after being thrown out of the PVV at the end of 2011 because of ’financial irregularities’.
Deutsche Welle adds:
In an interview with Tijs van den Brink on NPO Radio 1, NRC added that van Klaveren converted to Islam on October 26 last year, ahead of the release of his book titled: Apostate: From Christianity to Islam in the Time of Secular Terror.

Around five percent of the Dutch population of 17 million people or some 850,000 are Moslem, according to the Dutch Central Statistics Bureau (CBS).

And despite Wilders' objections, the religion is growing, with experts expecting that number to double by 2050.
At the link there is also a brief video on why young Dutch voters support Geert Wilders.

‘Is Venezuela your state?’ Erdogan slams US, EU states for Guaido endorsement
[ALMASDARNEWS] Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First

slammed the United States and a number of European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
countries for their endorsement of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president of the country, during a parliamentary address in Ankara on Tuesday.

"Is Venezuela your state? How can you tell someone to leave who is doing the job following an election? And how can you deliver the presidency of a nation to someone who hasn’t even been elected? Where’s the democracy? Weren’t you democratic?," Erdogan asked rhetorically.

The European Union had planned to issue a statement of support for Guiado, but the move was reportedly vetoed by Italia. Several EU states have formally recognised Juan Guaido as the interim president of Venezuela.

Accusing the West of hypocrisy, Erdogan asked: "on the one hand, you say repeatedly ’democracy’ and ’ballot box’, and then you’re going to topple the government with force and deception?"

The Ottoman Turkish leader also expressed anger towards the US for apparent delays in creating a buffer zone in Syria, warning that "our patience is not limitless."

Last month Erdogan and US President Donald Trump

's President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday he expected more cooperation from Greece in the repatriation of eight soldiers who fled to Greece following a 2016 coup attempt.

Earlier on Tuesday, Turkey updated a list of former military officers wanted for their alleged role in a 2016 coup attempt to include the eight officers who have been granted asylum in Greece, with a bounty of 4 million Ottoman Turkish lira ($770,446) each.

Erdogan made the remarks in a joint news conference with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

JKLF chief Yasin Malik slams global 'criminal silence' over Indian oppression in Kashmir
[DAWN] Jammu Kashmire Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman Yasin Malik
...chairman of one of the two factions of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front. JKLF is a Kashmiri nationalist organization founded in Birmingham, UK in 1977. Branches weren't actually established in Kashmir for another ten years. It has the usual demands for separation of J&K from secular India so it can become an independent Islamic rathole. It seems to have no interest in Pak Kashmir breaking away to join it. In 1994 Malik renounced violence after he was released from jail and from that point he and his organization pursued peaceful means to impose their will on the region...
on Tuesday slammed the international community's criminal silence over the continued oppression of Kashmiris under Indian occupation forces on Kashmire Solidarity Day.

On the occasion, Malik ─ in a video message shared with DawnNewsTV ─ thanked the Pak nation for standing in solidarity with the people of Kashmire on Feb 5.

"On this day, I would like to ask the international community, was it you who said that there could only be a military solution in Afghanistan?" he asked. "Today the same international community is talking to the Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
for peace in Afghanistan, because it has understood that no nation can be defeated using military might, and that the solution to all problems lies in talks."

The JKLF chairman observed that the international community "has adopted a stance of criminal silence on Kashmire", even as infants, elders, and youths lose their lives and property to the cause each day.

"The citizens of Kashmire are people too," Malik asserted, adding that is why the international community ─ which seeks global peace and is making efforts for peace in Afghanistan ─ should make similar efforts for resolving the Kashmire issue "so that there is true peace in South Asia".

Ukrainian electronic warfare system helped Israel destroy Syrian air defenses: report
[ALMASDARNEWS] Ukraine’s electronic warfare systems helped the Israeli military spot the positions of the Syrian air defense around Damascus, Avia-Pro reported on Monday.

According to the publication, the success of the Israeli attack in Syria was due to the fact that Ukraine had provided the electronic reconnaissance complex.

Chinese specialists reportedly pointed this out, noting that it was thanks to the intelligence complex of the mobile radio ’Kolchuga’ that the Israeli Air Force has obtained accurate data on the location of all systems.

The Ukrainian Kolchuga reportedly helped the Israeli Air Force identify several Syrian air defense systems, including the Tor system and the ZRPK. "Pantsir-S", C-75 and radar JY-28.

"Given the greater precision of the Israeli military strikes, it is logical to assume that this was achieved only through modern means of electronic recognition, in particular, it could also apply to the Kolchuga complex, which has was recently transferred to the Israeli armaments ", an analyst noted.

The specialist also noted that before the transfer of the Kolchuga electronic recognition complex, the Israeli army treated the new strikes against Syria with extreme caution, which could also indicate that it is thanks to "the help" from Ukraine that the positions of air defense and radar systems have been identified.

US Coalition planned to bomb Syrian portable toilet in 2017
[ALMASDARNEWS] The U.S. Coalition had planned to bomb a portable toilet that belonged to the Syrian government near the al-Tanf region, the Foreign Policy reported on Monday.

According to the Foreign Policy article, the U.S. Coalition called an Arclight airstrike on the Syrian government but made the decision to cancel the attack at the last minute.

The day prior to this incident, the U.S. Coalition had bombed an Iranian convoy that moved within 21 miles of their al-Tanf base in the southeastern countryside of the Homs Governorate.

The following day, the U.S. Coalition spotted one of the vehicles that was part of the convoy moving towards the government areas north of the al-Tanf zone while also transporting a portable toilet.

However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
the U.S. Coalition made the decision to cancel the attack because it was deemed ’unlawful’ by the high command, the Foreign Policy article claimed.

"We stray from the Constitution when military commanders choose to use US military force against another state’s force in the absence of a credible, imminent threat," a defense official told the magazine.

He added that if forces of Evil are not removed from Syria’s Manbij in a couple of weeks, Ankara will run out of patience.

Despite Erdogan’s threats, the Syrian Arab Army has effectively blocked their path to Manbij, which may cause some friction between Ankara and Moscow.

Manbij is expected to be discussed at the upcoming Astana Peace Conference that is to be held on February 14th.

If Israel continues to attack Syria, Iran will respond: defense council head
[ALMASDARNEWS] Secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said on Tuesday at a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem that Israel will receive a decisive response if it continues attacks in Syria.

"In case of continuation of such actions, specific measures will be taken to contain it and to respond decisively and symmetrically, giving an exemplary lesson to the lying and criminal rulers of Israel," Shamkhani said, as quoted by the IRNA news agency.

Muallem, in turn, said that the Syrian government was committed to ensuring the security of the Iranian forces in the country.

Last month, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps second-in-command Brig. Gen. Hossein Salami said in a television address that Iran’s strategy was to wipe "the Zionist regime" of Israel off the political map.

Relations between Israel and Iran have been very strained recently. Israel has been opposing Iran’s military presence in Syria, fearing Tehran might gain increased influence in the region. Iran has stressed that in only sends advisers at the request of the Syrian government.

#7  What am I missing? If you have satellite pictures, you have targets. Right? If you have targets you have lots of crafty ways to strike them. Right?

EU oil buyers won’t return our calls despite US waivers, Iran gripes
[IsraelTimes] Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh appears to be referring to Greece and Italia, which were among eight nations granted waivers to import Iranian oil despite US sanctions in November

The US began ramping up sanctions after US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
withdrew from Iran’s 2015 nuclear accord with world powers last year. Oil exports are a key source of revenue for Iran. The temporary waivers were intended to give countries more time to comply with the sanctions.

Separately, Iran ruled out linkage between a new EU mechanism to trade with Tehran bypassing US sanctions and an anti-money laundering bill.

"Linking implementation of this mechanism... with the requirements of institutions such as the FATF is unacceptable," the foreign ministry said, referring to the international Financial Action Task Force.

Iran is on an FATF blacklist drawn up to counter money laundering and the financing of terrorist groups, but the Gay Paree-based organization has suspended counter-measures since 2017 while Tehran works on reforms.

EU leaders on Monday welcomed the bloc’s new mechanism to trade with Iran but warned Tehran over its ballistic missile program and regional policies while calling for it to implement reforms to comply with FATF demands.

Britannia, La Belle France and Germany created the system last week to allow firms to trade with Iran without falling foul of US sanctions.
