'Libya death toll may be as high as 30k'
[Iran Press TV] US Ambassador to Libya Gene Cretz has said the number of fatalities since the revolution in the North African country could amount to 30,000 people.

"I don't think we're probably going to get an accurate number until we really get more hands-on experience on the ground," Cretz said on Wednesday, stating that US officials have seen figures ranging from 10,000 to 30,000, the News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called a meeting. It was to be his last...
the ambassador said Washington thinks that Libyan Transitional National Council (TNC) established by opposition forces in the eastern city of Benghazi, is "worthy of US support" but did not hint at formal recognition of the TNC by the US.

Washington's special envoy to Benghazi, Chris Stevens, has been in Libya's opposition-controlled parts for several weeks to assess the situation in the crisis-stricken country. On Tuesday, US President Barack B.O. Obama approved $25 million in non-military aid to the civilians in the eastern parts of Libya.

On Wednesday, NATO

warplanes continued bombarding the vicinity of the besieged town of Misratah to push back forces loyal to the Libyan ruler Muammar Qadaffy. However,
The ever-popular However...
Qadaffy loyalists shelled the western town after NATO air strikes.

Qadaffy forces also fired rockets at the opposition-held town of Zintan in the west, destroying several houses and commercial buildings, reports said.

Heads and envoys of 61 tribes across Libya have issued a joint statement calling on Qadaffy to step down. They said the country is facing growing threats due to Qadaffy's actions which have ruined unity among Libyan people.

Humanitarian situation is aggravating especially in Misratah where thousands of people are in dire need of food, water and medical supplies.

#3  Barack Obama approved $25 million in non-military aid to the civilians in the eastern parts of Libya.

Just so we're clear now. The US "aid" of uniforms, boots, optics, radios and such are all "non-military" These are just the kind of items "civilians" need in a time of a "humanitarian" crisis. And these supplies are the perfect compliment to those "defensive" missiles the Qataris donated to the cause.

(Wouldn't want to violate that pesky arms embargo you know.)

Cairo holds massive anti-Israel rally
[Iran Press TV] Thousands of Egyptian Protesters have gathered in front of the Israeli embassy in the capital Cairo demanding an end to ties with the Tel Aviv regime.

The demonstration originated from the nearby Cairo University.

The protesters demanded that the Egyptian government abruptly sever all ties with Israel.

The protesters have also called for a freeze on all gas exports to Tel Aviv.

They have threatened to continue massive protest rallies if the current government does not move to cut off ties with the Israeli regime.

The new development is the latest in a series of major protest rallies that led to the downfall of the decades-long ruler Hosni Mubarak.
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...

Under the US-backed Mubarak regime, Egypt consistently served Israeli interests and objectives by helping to impose a total blockade on the impoverished Gazoo strip after the democratically elected Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, government took control of the territory in 2007. The crippling blockade on the territory has triggered a humanitarian crisis.

A major Egyptian political party, the Moslem Brüderbund (MB), has recently demanded that the country's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces takes immediate measures in breaking the siege of Gazoo.

Egypt's political parties say the Gazoo blockade serves American and Israeli objectives in the region and threatens regional stability and independence.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch, Butch and the Kid finally brought their horses under control...
Israeli officials have been repeatedly threatening to launch a fresh major offensive against Gazoo.

The Israelis boast that the next Gazoo onslaught could be even more destructive than the previous one at the turn of 2009, which killed over 1,400 Paleostinians, most of them civilians, including many women and kiddies.

#2  Israel has an opportunity right now with Egypt in disarray, to start mass deportations of Paleos into Egypt. Started as a military response to provocation, if well organized, huge herds of Gazoo Paleos could be ushered out "for their safety" before the border is sealed.

When the Egyptians realize what is going on, Israel should profusely apologize, then dump a whole bunch of humanitarian aid over the border as well, while keeping it sealed.

Then suggest that they cannot let Gazoo Paleos back in until there is a new Egyptian government. After long term negotiations, of course. Negotiations that could stretch on for decades, or centuries.

Morocco's king and the freed Salafis
On April 14, King Mohammed VI pardoned or reduced the sentences of 190 prisoners, mainly Salafi jihadis — about one in 10 of the 2,000 or so people tried, sentenced and jailed after the 2003 Casablanca bombings. Among them was Mohamad Fizazi, who supported attacks on the West, and preached in Al Quds Mosque in Hamburg, with 9-11 terrorists in attendance.

China-Japan-Koreas
Jimmy Carter: U.S., South Korea are violating North Koreans' human rights by withholding food
Via Greg Hengler, why would an American cap a three-day visit to Kim Jong-Il's national gulag by accusing the U.S. of human rights violations? Well, much like Superman, Carter's more a "citizen of the world" now than part of the country he used to lead. In fact, he wasn't there on behalf of the State Department but as part of a delegation from "The Elders," an elite team of ex-statesmen who travel the world sharing the sort of wisdom that's made "Jimmy Carter" synonymous with successful foreign policy ideas here at home.
Jimmy, you are a joke. Go home. Stop being a useful idiot. The only ones that are at fault for the population of North Korea is the leadership.

What successful policy? Unless by success you mean kissing our enemies' asses and kicking our allies. Which you and the new holder of the title "Worst President Ever" obviously do.

It isn't our responsibility to enable Kim's abuse of his resources. So, apparently he can basically rob the people blind and that will be OK because we will replace the food he has stolen from the people?

It is time we stop enabling this idiot.

#3  I was suggesting something similar to this the other day. However, these type weapons do need complementary ones, like MOABs, that can punch deep enough to take out the bunkers themselves, not just their air vents.

A personal favorite, old technology but very appropriate, would be for the SKor to quietly install some hidden, disappearing carriage 16" coastal guns. With a range of 25 or more miles, anything near the border that could menace Seoul could be policed up before it could do very much damage. Even a rough miss would rattle whatever it was to pieces.

Home Front: WoT
KSM: Back to zero
The Obama administration's fumbling on trials for the 9/11 terrorists turns out to be worse than anyone realized: It didn't just waste two years trying to hold a civilian trial for Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the confessed 9/11 mastermind -- it set the clock back even further.

Plans by Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder for a trial in New York were always absurd -- even the old Democratic Congress felt obliged to render the move impossible.

But, now that the administration's thrown in the towel on civilian trials, it refuses to just pick up proceedings against KSM back where they left off in the Bush years. Team Obama insists on starting from scratch.

India-Pakistan
Intelligence agencies act under govt's instructions: Gilani
[Dawn] Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani
... Pakistain's erstwhile current prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics can be awe-inspiring ...
on Wednesday categorically stated that the country's intelligence agencies were subservient to the government and act under government's instructions and guidance.
Therefore ISI's involvement with the Taliban is Pak government policy, not a matter of a few "rogue agents."
Speaking in the National Assembly, the prime minister said the country's institutions should not be looked at with suspicion, adding, whatever the intelligence agencies including ISI do, it is on the government's instructions and under government's guidance.

Gilani said he had stated on the floor of the house that Pakistain and the United States have multi-dimensional strategic relations in various fields including defence and economic cooperation as well as intelligence sharing for the last 60 years.

Pakistain-US relations are based on mutual interest and mutual respect, he maintained.

The prime minister reiterated that the intelligence sharing between Pakistain and the United States has been in past, going on at present and would continue in future as well.

Referring to the bilateral foreign visits of senior government officials, the prime minister said the foreign secretary recently visited the United States and now the defence secretary is proceeding to US for the Defence Consultation Group meeting.

Gilani said the Defence Secretary has briefed him on his visit to the United States during which he would discuss defence cooperation, matters of Coalition Support Fund as well as capacity building of Pak forces in the fight against militancy.

The prime minister also referred to the assertions made in the Wall Street Journal about his recent visit to Afghanistan, accompanied by the Chief of Army Staff and DG ISI, and said foreign office would issue a statement in this respect.

Gilani said the opposition should not believe in speculations and should trust the government.

The prime minister said the government respects the courts, adding, after the Supreme Court verdict on the issue of extension in the service of additional judges of Lahore and Sindh Courts, the president on his advice has notified the extension.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad must go, Hamas insists
Hamas has insisted on the departure of Salam Fayyad, the Palestinian prime minister favoured by Israel and the west, under a deal agreed with its rival faction Fatah for a unity government, according to sources in Gaza.

The Islamist organisation also said it would keep control of the Gaza Strip under the accord, which is expected to be formally signed by leaders of the two factions in Cairo next week.

The plan drew further criticism on Thursday from Israel, which has said it would not deal with a Palestinian government that included members of Hamas.

However, the interim Hamas-Fatah government will have no involvement in negotiations with Israel. Talks will still be conducted by the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, headed by Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.

'Hamas, Fatah agree on unity gov't'
[Iran Press TV] Paleostinian Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, and Fatah factions have reportedly reached an understanding on forming a transitional Paleostinian unity government and holding future elections.

Delegations representing the two factions came to the understanding on Wednesday in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, where they had just resumed unity talks, the Egyptian Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.

The 'complete understanding' came "after talks on all the points, including the formation of a transitional government with a specific mandate and setting a date for elections," it said.

The development is expected to be followed by signing of a reconciliation agreement between all Paleostinian factions in Egypt.

Hamas and Fatah have been at odds since Hamas won the Paleostinian parliamentary elections in January 2006.

The dispute marginalized the faction's governance to the Gazoo Strip -- a comparably smaller portion of Paleostinian territories.

The Israeli regime also reacted to the victory by laying a crippling siege on Gazoo and maintaining regular deadly attacks on the impoverished strip.

Fatah, however, set up headquarters in the Israeli-occupied West Bank with Hamas arguing that the faction works in cahoots with Tel Aviv.

Last year, Hamas complained about an arrest campaign against its members led by the so-called security forces functioning under Fatah's leader, the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
, declaring that its rival faction works "in close coordination with those of the Israeli occupiers" in the West Bank.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
203 more quit Ba'ath party in protest over crackdown
AFP - Another 203 members of Syria's ruling Baath party announced their resignation Wednesday in protest at the deadly crackdown on protesters, raising the number to 233, according to lists seen by AFP.

The latest group to step down were members from the Houran region, which covers the flashpoint town of Daraa in the south of the country. Earlier 30 members resigned from the restive city of Banias in northwest Syria.

"The security services have demolished the values with which grew up. We denounce and condemn everything that has taken place and announce with regret our resignation from the party," they said in a signed statement.

"Practices of the security services against our unarmed citizens ... are against all human values and the slogans of the party," they wrote.

The Baath party signatories from the Banias region condemned "the house raids and the indiscriminate use of live fire against people, homes, mosques and churches."

Two hundred Baathists resign in Syria's Deraa
AMMAN - Two hundred members of Syria's ruling Baath Party from the province of Deraa and surrounding regions resigned on Wednesday in protest against an attack by security forces on the southern city.

"In view of the negative stance taken by the leadership of the Arab Socialist Baath Party towards the events in Syria and in Deraa, and after the death of hundreds and the wounding of thousands at the hands of the various security forces, we submit our collective resignation," said a declaration signed by the officials.

#1  Syria serves as a political and military conduit for Iranian-backed militant groups in the eastern Mediterranean, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Palestinian territories. Regime change in Syria could deliver a cataclysmic blow to Iran's ability to project power in the region and threaten Israel.

And this:
Syria has encouraged Turkey's increasingly assertive regional leadership in recent years because of its importance as a trade partner, its potential as a counterweight to the West and as an alternative to the relationship with Iran.

Leader vows bright outlook in region
[Iran Press TV] The Leader of the Islamic theocracy says in light of the uprisings of regional nations, the future of the region will be better than its current situation.

"The future of the region will be much better than its current situation thanks to the efforts and movement of nations on the path of Islam," Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday, addressing thousands of Iranian workers.

Ayatollah Khamenei added that arrogant powers "which have been disgraced in the world and among their nations have lined up in front of the Islamic Theocratic Republic."

"They wanted to isolate the Medes and the Persians but [their plan] backfired," the Leader said, adding that today nations respect Iran more than ever before.

Ayatollah Khamenei added that Iran's enemies have focused their efforts against the country in economic fields intending to generate a rift between people and the establishment. He then urged the nation to persist in confronting the enemy with all their might and reliance on their insights and perception.

The Leader also emphasized that in the new Iranian Year, named "The Year of Economic Jihad (perseverance)," the Medes and the Persians and government officials must prepare the grounds for a major economic growth.

Ayatollah Khamenei, moreover, reiterated the significance of generating more job opportunities, urging the nation to consume domestically-manufactured products.
