Afghanistan
Karzai Seeks Saudi's Support to Afghan Peace Deal
[Quqnoos] President Karzai left for Saudi Arabia on Tuesday likely to seek Saudi's support in talks to Taliban.

President Hamid Karzai, who is heading a delegation that includes Foreign Minister Zalmay Rasoul and key religious leaders, planned to make a pilgrimage to Mecca, then meet with King Abdullah.

Afghan President and King Abdullah of Saudi will discuss Afghanistan, the region and possible "solutions for reconciliation," according to a statement from Karzai's office.

Ahead of his trip to Saudi Arabia, President Karzai hoped that "King Abdullah will personally assume a prominent role in leading and supporting the peace process."

The Afghan government announced a reintegration plan in a major international conference in London last week, offering jobs and other economic incentives to militants renouncing violence.

The Taliban have dismissed the offer, pre-conditioning the withdrawal of foreign troops to any negotiations.

Saudi Arabia was one of the few countries that recognised the Taliban regime before it collapses and it has been involved in peace efforts previously.

The Afghan leader will travel Thursday to Munich, Germany for an international security conference.

There were rumours that Saudi may provide asylum to those Taliban leaders who cut their ties with Al Qaeda network.

Sudan to face more pressure on Darfur: B.O.
[Al Arabiya Latest] President Barack Obama urged Sudan on Tuesday to cooperate in efforts to stabilize the country or Washington will conclude that engagement is not working and seek "additional pressure" on Khartoum.

Obama, answering questions submitted via YouTube, said the United States, United Nations and other countries were working to broker a series of agreements to stabilize the country and allow refugees back to their homes.

"We continue to put pressure on the Sudanese government. If they are not cooperative in these efforts, then it is going to be appropriate for us to conclude that engagement doesn't work, and we're going to have to apply additional pressure on Sudan in order to achieve our objectives," Obama said.

He said, however, he hoped "we can broker agreements with all the parties involved to deal with what has been enormous human tragedy in that region."

Estimates vary widely on how many people have died in Sudan's Darfur conflict, which began when mostly non-Arab rebels took up arms against the government in 2003. The United Nations says as many as 300,000 have died. The Sudanese government puts the figure at 10,000.

U.S. strategy toward Sudan calls for renewed economic sanctions, but also offers Khartoum incentives to end violence.

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir last year for war crimes in Darfur. This week it will rule on whether genocide charges could be added.

Bashir is running in Africa's largest country's first democratic elections in 24 years in April.

Senegalese president warns AU of Sahel terror threat
[Maghrebia] A regional effort is necessary to fight al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and arms trafficking in the Sahel, Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade said on Monday (February 1st) in Addis Ababa. "Terrorism in the Sahel region is growing in power and taking troubling new forms," Journal Tahalil quoted Wade as saying on the sidelines of the 14th Summit of the African Union (AU).

"Countries such as Senegal and Mali can't do everything alone. Insofar as it is an international problem, Western powers must also intervene in the fight against AQIM," he explained.

In related news, Malian President Amadou Toumani Touré met Monday in Bamako with French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner to discuss the latest developments regarding the French hostage held since November by al-Qaeda. Last week-end, the terrorist organisation extended its deadline to Mali and France for the life of Pierre Camatte.

China-Japan-Koreas
Nork Finance Chief Sacked Over Currency Debacle
The North Korean regime apparently sacked the Workers' Party's Finance Director Pak Nam-gi, letting him take the fall for the failed currency reform late last year. Pak was appointed finance director in July 2007 to oversee North Korea's economic policies and has spent the past few years trying to root out a nascent market economy.

"Right now, North Korean officials are busy blaming each other for the failed currency reform and Pak, who spearheaded the revaluation, is believed to have been sacked," said a diplomatic source in Beijing. "Markets have come to a grinding halt following the currency revaluation and prices have soared," the source said. It seems North Korea hoped to stabilize prices through the currency reform and then credit the achievement to Kim Jong-il's third son and heir apparent Jong-un to consolidate his grip on power, but this flopped, the source added.

Some North Korea watchers in China predict that the regime may perform a U-turn back to timid market reforms now that Pak, who led the crusade against capitalism, has been fired. One North Korea expert in Beijing said, "There is a strong possibility that high-ranking North Korean officials who led the drive to crush market forces since 2004 will be removed from office, while policies will shift toward market reforms starting in the second half of this year."

Meanwhile, the new North Korean won is still plummeting against the U.S. dollar. North Korea valued the new currency to 98 won per dollar after the old won weakened to 3,500. But the new won has plunged since last month and is now being traded at between 300 and 500 won per dollar, according to people who trade goods with North Koreans.

U.S. Warns of Nork Missile Technology
The U.S. Defense Department considers North Korea's ballistic missile technology a greater danger than previously believed, a report Wednesday said. The report predicts the North will have technology to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the U.S. mainland over the Pacific and mounting nuclear warheads by 2020.

The department says it underestimated the North's capabilities when it test-fired a long-range missile in April last year and conducted its second nuclear test in May. Senior department officials were then saying that no country would buy technologies that had clearly failed the test.

But the new report says it is only a matter of time before the North successfully tests a long-range missile, adding that although it failed in what it then taunted as a satellite launch, many of the North's technologies for developing ICBMs are "successful."

The report claims the North is also developing medium and short-range missiles targeting South Korea and Japan, having already developed solid-propellant short-range ballistic missiles with improved performance. It is also developing mobile intermediate-range ballistic missiles, the report adds.

Solid-propellant short-range surface-to-ship KN-02 missiles with a range of 120 km are warfare-ready, it claims, and it deployed IRBMs with a range of more than 3,000km mounted on mobile launchers in 2007.

The report expresses "concerns" about North Korea building a cooperative system with Iran for missile development. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Michèle Flournoy said, "It is important to note that U.S. homeland missile defense efforts are focused on regional actors such as North Korea and Iran."

Europe
France denies citizenship over veil
The French government is refusing to grant citizenship to a foreign man who forces his wife to wear the full Islamic veil, amid a fierce debate in the country about national identity. Francois Fillon, the French prime minister, said on Wednesday he would sign a decree barring the man from receiving French nationality, adding that he "has no place in our country".

The decision comes just days after a parliamentary panel called for a law to ban the wearing of full Islamic veils in public institutions such as schools, hospitals and transport.

"It's French law," Fillon told Europe 1 radio. "The civil code has for a very long time provided that naturalisation could be refused to someone who does not respect the values of the (French) republic.

"This case is about a religious radical: he imposes the burqa, he imposes the separation of men and women in his own home, and he refuses to shake the hands of women," he said.

Debate over burqa

On Tuesday, Eric Besson, the immigration minister, said that during checks into the man's application, he had explicitly stated that he would never allow his wife to leave the house without wearing a full veil and that he believed a woman is "an inferior being".

The man's name and nationality have not been made public, but Le Figaro newspaper said he came from Morocco and requires French citizenship to settle in France with his wife.
Keep her, deport him ...
Fillon has said the man's wife, who is French, could continue to wear the full-veil if she chooses, pending legislation.

The French government is seeking legal advice before drafting legislation that would outlaw the burqa or niqab in as many areas as possible.

The debate over whether full Islamic veils should be banned has raged in France since Nicolas Sarkozy, the president, said the burqa was "not welcome". There are concerns such moves would stigmatise the country's Muslim population of around six million people.
Stigmatize: 1. to set some mark of disgrace or infamy upon. 2. to mark with a stigma or brand.
3. to produce stigmata, marks, spots, or the like, on.

That describes the wearing of a burqa or niqab.

Of those, only around 1,900 women wear the niqab or burqa.
family-imposed stigmata.
On Monday the French Catholic Church warned the government against banning the veils, saying France must respect the rights of its Muslims if it wanted Islamic countries to do the same for their Christian minorities.
France must respect the rights and safety of French citizens, not fundamentalist muslims wearing disguises. The catholic church has obviously misunderstood the core beliefs of islamic countries vis-a-vis christian minorities.

#3  Thinking about it a bit, I wonder if this is a self defeating idea?

Muslims are now easily recognizable,They wear very distinctive clothing, without the burqa they blend in.

Turkish ID breaches religious freedom: Top court
[Al Arabiya Latest] Europe's top rights court ruled Tuesday that references to faith on Turkey's national identity cards breached freedom of religion laws.

In another closely watched case that gauged respect for human rights in European Union candidate Turkey, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled against eight Kurds asking to use Kurdish names on identity cards

The ECHR said the presence of a "religion" box on Turkish ID cards violated the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion -- even if holders can ask for it to be left blank.

This right, enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights, entitled people not to disclose their faith if they so chose, the court said.

The judges made the ruling in the case of a member of the Alevi community, a sizeable religious minority in Turkey which is influenced by Sufi Islam but whose members maintain they are not Muslims.

Turkish courts refused to allow Sinan Isik, from the western Turkish city of Izmir, to state his religion as "Alevi" on his ID card, ruling it was a sub-group of Islam.

He then took his case to Strasbourg, arguing that having to state his religion on a public document used frequently in everyday life violated his rights under the convention.

The Strasbourg judges ruled in his favor, even though Turkish ID card holders have been allowed to leave the religion box empty since 2006.

"The fact of having to apply to the authorities in writing for the deletion of the religion... on identity cards, and similarly, the mere fact of having an identity card with the 'religion' box left blank, obliged the individual to disclose, against his or her will, information concerning an aspect of his or her religion or most personal convictions," the court said in its judgment.

"That was undoubtedly at odds with the principle of freedom not to manifest one's religion or belief."

Isik made no application for damages, but the judges said Turkey could make amends and bring itself in line with the convention by removing the religion box from its ID cards.

Though Turkey has a majority Muslim population, the state is officially secular. Isik had also argued in the Turkish courts that his constitutional right not to disclose his faith had been breached.

Thailand can quash insurgency by year-end: minister
Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said Tuesday that his government is capable of quashing insurgency violence in the country's restive south by year-end. Asked if he is confident of bringing peace in 2010 to the region which has been under a state of emergency for almost five years, Kasit said: "Yes, yes, yes. Under our administration."

He explained that the Thai government is pouring financial resources into the development of the region, while working closely with the armed forces to bring about stability.

Externally, Thailand has also been receiving help from countries including Gulf states, Malaysia and Indonesia on the issue, he said. "Various foreign leaderships have been telling the Muslim minorities of the citizenship of Thailand to behave as good Thai citizens," he told journalists in Geneva. "Everyone is helping us to bring about peace and security down south," he added.

"So, yes, there is a sense of optimism," he added.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Egyptian sources: Israel prepares to strike Iran from Gulf and N. Iraq
From Debka. Season to taste

Arab voices were fanning Middle East war fever Wednesday night, Feb. 3. debkafile's military sources report that not only are Syrian leaders beating war drums - Syrian foreign minister Walid Muallem said in Damascus: "Israelis, do not test the power of Syria since you know the war will move into your cities" - but Egyptian military sources have put out information purporting to outline Israel's preparations to strike Iran.

They report that the Israeli Navy together with the US Fifth Fleet have for some weeks been charting Persian Gulf waters and Iranian shorelines in preparation for attacks by Israeli naval and special operations forces.

IDF intelligence and special forces officers, they also say, have been marking out routes for their air and ground forces to drive into Iran and hit its nuclear installations.

According to these Egyptian sources, Saudi Arabia has demanded clarifications from Washington about reported US-assisted Israeli preparations to strike Iran and asks why they were not brought to the notice of Riyadh and the Gulf Arab governments. The Saudis added that several Gulf intelligence and naval units had tracked Israeli movements and gathered documentary evidence.

Some of this information was leaked in Cairo Wednesday night to Shorouk, a publication which Egyptian intelligence often uses as an outlet for information held to be credible. Shorouk was first out with the story of the Israeli Air Force attack on Iranian arms convoys in Sudan in January 2009.

Iran hails successful satellite launch
From the Baron Munchhausen files.
Iran hailed the successful launch of a home-built satellite on Wednesday amid Western concerns it is using its nuclear and space industries to develop atomic and ballistic weapons.

The Kavoshgar 3 (Explorer) rocket was carrying an "experimental capsule", state-owned Al-Alam television reported.

State television's website said it was carrying "live animals" -- a rat, turtles and worms, the first such experiment by Iran in space technology. "The capsule has the ability to send back empirical data," the website said.

State television showed footage of the rocket being fired from a desert launchpad leaving behind a thick plume of smoke.
Check out the "space rocket" pic at the link. It looks like a Grad rocket. Those mouth breathers go from success to success.

Ahmadinejad proposes prisoner swap for US hikers
Muslims and hostages. Goes together like brats and beer.
Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday proposed a swap of Iranians in U.S. prisons for three American hikers being held in Tehran.

Ahmadinejad said in interview with state TV that there were ongoing negotiations about exchanging the hikers for several Iranians jailed for years in the United States.

"There are some talks under way to have an exchange, if it is possible," he said. "Recently they (the U.S.) have sent messages, we answered to bring them (the Iranians), to bring these people (the hikers). We are hopeful that all prisoners will be released."

Ahmadinejad did not mention any specifics but in December Iran released a list of 11 Iranians it says are being held in the U.S. — including a nuclear scientist who disappeared in Saudi Arabia and a former Defense Ministry official who vanished in Turkey. The list also includes an Iranian arrested in Canada on charges of trying to obtain nuclear technology.
No, you keep those dumbass hippies. We got the better deal.

They have nothing to do with each other.

I'd wait until Amnesia International decries this then maybe see if they want to return them voluntarily.

Iran: 'We Do Not Take Mrs. Clinton's Remarks Seriously'
(CNSNews.com) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki said his government no longer takes U.S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton seriously, equating her call for increased economic sanctions on Iran with "the failed policies of the Bush administration."
I got three words for you, Bubby: "Fort Marcy Park."
According to a BBC translation, Mottaki told reporters in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Sunday that Clinton's comments on Jan. 29 in London were part of a "tension-creating approach" being deployed by the White House.

"Mrs. Clinton's efforts to take America back to the failed policies of the Bush administration era will not benefit the people or the government of that country," Mottaki said.

He continued to criticize U.S. foreign policy, saying that Iran had withstood 30 years of U.S. hostility and would not take Secretary Clinton's statements seriously until Washington "clarified" its position.

"It has been three decades that the Islamic Republic of Iran has been facing the hostile approach of some American officials," he said. "Therefore, until the domestic prospect of the White House on Iran-U.S. relations is clarified, we do not take Mrs. Clinton's remarks seriously."

Clinton, speaking to reporters Jan. 29 in London, said that Iran's continued defiance of the international nuclear norms left "little choice" but to pursue more economic sanctions.

"Iran has provided a continuous stream of threats to intensify its violation of international nuclear norms," Clinton said. "Iran's approach leaves us with little choice than to work with our partners to apply greater pressure in the hope that it will cause Iran to reconsider its rejection of diplomatic efforts."

Mottaki dismissed Clinton's remarks.

"We advise Mrs. Clinton not to use repetitive and fruitless rhetoric in her tone."

Ahmadinejad: West survives on sowing discord
[Iran Press TV Latest] President Ahmadinejad warns against divisive policies that seek to destabilize the region, as reports circulate that Washington is ramping up its military hardware in the Persian Gulf,.

In a Tuesday meeting with Qatar's crown prince Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani in Tehran, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Western countries have always played a destabilizing role in the region.

"The Westerners cannot bear the thought of security and solidarity among regional countries," said the Iranian president. "They have survived largely by sowing discord and inciting instability in the region."

President Ahmadinejad said the relations between regional countries such as Iran and Qatar should be stronger than ever, now that "the enemy seeks to gain political and economic benefits by spreading the fire of war in the region."

This comes amid reports that US President Barack Obama has approved the deployment of new warships and anti-missile systems to the Persian Gulf.

On Saturday, unidentified US military officials told AP that Washington has taken silent steps to increase the capability of land-based Patriot missiles on the territory of some of its Arab allies in the Persian Gulf region.

Arab states have a long history of housing US military bases and combat equipment. Kuwait plays host to US Patriots, while the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain are home to the US Navy's 5th Fleet headquarters.

Qatar is also known to have a modernized US air operations center that has played a central role in the US wars on Iraq and Afghanistan.

For his part, Qatar's Crown Prince acknowledged Iran's constructive efforts to promote regional security, saying that his country believes that Tehran is "a strategic power and ally."

He said that Iran's contributions to stability in the region should also be acknowledged by Arab states and other countries.

Prince Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani arrived in Tehran on Tuesday to discuss matters of mutual interest with Iranian government officials.

In talks with Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi on Tuesday, the Qatari prince said that closer military ties between Tehran and Doha would have many benefits; not only for the two countries, but also for the entire region.

Vahidi, for his part, said the security of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz hinges on increased military ties between Iran and Qatar.

Leader: Iran target of modern injustice
[Iran Press TV Latest] The Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the "negligence" was the main factor behind the country's post-election violence in June. "I am always optimistic, and that is why I believe that some of the recent unfortunate incidents have come about through negligence committed by some [people]," the Leader said on Tuesday.

Addressing a group of lectures from the prestigious Tehran University, Ayatollah Khamenei urged academics to be vigilant as sometimes negligence may cross into the realms of betrayal.

The Leader also emphasized on the need to push for an accelerated academic progress towards scientific achievements.

He also reiterated on the need to develop programs and educational literature for the cultural and moral nurturing of college students.

In another part of his address Ayatollah Khamenei described "modern and armed injustice that is unobjectionable" as the "realities of today's world" and added that the extensive and high-tech propaganda and the unrelenting plots against the Islamic Republic are among the indicators of the modern and armed injustices that are in existence today based on scientific knowledge.

The Leader then noted that the Islamic Republic has become the focal point of the enemy's high-tech attacks because of its objections to such injustices.

In the meeting, the president of Tehran University enumerated the many achievements of the University since the victory of the revolution and noted that its standing among the world's colleges has climbed 117 levels, placing it among the world's 500 leading universities.
