Police arrest 29 for bringing people to EU on leisure boats
[AlAhram] Police in Italia, Albania and Greece on Wednesday arrested some 30 people accused of profiteering several hundred million euros to smuggle refugees and migrants colonists into the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
on yachts and other leisure vessels.
The coordinated action is believed to have dealt a serious blow to the lucrative Turkey-Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
sailboat crossings, for which people pay between $6,000 to $10,000 to reach southern Italia, with an eye on northern European destinations.

``We hope to have curbed the phenomenon, for the next few weeks or the next few months,'' said Lt. Col. Giuseppe Giulio Leo, head of Italia's financial police in the southern city of Lecce. ''Still, we need to take into account that there will be someone ready to join the organization and take over the various roles.``

The smugglers use mostly sailboats and yachts, but also fishing boats and less sea-worthy craft, packing between 30 to 180 people on board, he said. Their destination is typically the southern region of Puglia, the closest point, but they often wind up in Calabria due to weather, Leo said.

The arrested suspects are believed to be part of a wider ring with as many as 80 members that organized at least 30 smuggling operations that transported at least 1,100 people by boat from Turkey to the coast of Puglia, and then on to other European countries, EU law enforcement agency Europol said.

Eleven people were arrested in Italia, including smugglers who navigated the vessels, some of which had been stolen, as well as Iraqi and Syrian citizens who carried out the logistics, Leo said. Some had already been taken into custody during the investigation, which was launched more than a year ago.

Another 18 were arrested in Albania and one in Greece, Europol said.

The criminal masterminds of the operations are believed to be in Turkey, and the Lecce prosecutors has activated diplomatic channels in a bid to extend the operation, ``with the hope of apprehending the presumed criminals located there,`` Leo said.

Two of the arrested were brothers who are Iraqi citizens accused of running logistics to help the migrants colonists reach northern Europe. The men were arrested without incident near Venice before dawn. Italian financial police entered a modestly furnished house peacefully, and the brothers emerged wearing handcuffs and tracksuits.

The suspects, identified as Alaa Qasim Rahima, 38, and Omar Qasim Rahima, 30, are accused of running a ring that helped bring Syrians from Turkey to the EU using a network of associates in various countries.

Another ringleader, also Iraqi, is accused of helping the smugglers evade detection in Italia and return to Turkey via Greece.

Payments were made through informal money transfer systems such as hawala, which is used in some African, Asian and Mideast countries by both low-wage workers and criminal gangs alike to move funds without wire or other records.

Police in Greece were searching two agencies there that handled the payments, Leo said.

Authorities estimate the illegal profits from the people smuggling at several hundred million euros.

The price paid varied by departure point, with more than half leaving from Turkey, and the destination, and often payments were made only when the trip was successfully completed, Leo said.

Boko Haram Terrorists Kill Traditional Ruler, Teenager In Adamawa
[SaharaReporters] Gunmen believed to be Boko Haram
...not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
hard boyz have killed a traditional ruler and a teenager in Adamawa State.

SaharaReporters learnt that the two persons were reportedly killed during an abduction move in the Madagali Local Government Area of the state.

SaharaReporters learnt that Ijarsu Markus, who was kidnapped alongside his mother, and sibling last two weeks from Maiwandu village in the Madagali Local Government Area had been murdered by his captors.

They informed that the remains of the 16-year old were discovered three days after he was killed with stab wounds on his chest and heart.

This comes two weeks after the village head of Maiwandu, Ahmadu Sikari, was murdered in an attempt to kidnap him.

Madagali, which was annexed by the terror group, Boko Haram between 2014 and 2015, had continued to experience attacks from time to time.

Local vigilantes had rescued Markus' mother and his brother while the button men made away with the dear departed.

Confirming the two deaths to SaharaReporters, the district head of Duhu, Mustapha Sanusi, said the death of the village head and that of Markus had terrified the area. He pleaded with the government to deploy more troops to the area.

He said, "Some Boko Haram gunnies are now teaming up with other criminals to raise money for the insurgency through kidnapping for ransom."

The Spokesperson for the police in Adamawa State, DSP Sulaiman Nguroje, confirmed the incidents, adding that "the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ahmed Barde has dispatched personnel to track down the perpetrators."

Bandits Sack Nine Villages In Kaduna, Abduct Many Residents
[SaharaReporters] Bandits have sacked no fewer than nine villages in Kaduna State, abducting scores of residents during the attack.

This comes as the Kaduna State government announced the killing of some bandidos and the rescue of kidnapped victims.

SaharaReporters learnt from residents of Birnin Gwari that besides sacking nine villages, bandidos kidnapped unspecified numbers of people along the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari way.

A titleholder in Birnin Gwari, Zubairu Abdurra'uf Idris, informed that Kungin Dan-Bauchi, Kimbi, Katagagi, Damari and Shirya, were among the villages sacked within one week.

He said, "How these Death Eaters invaded Waro, Rema, Unguwar Shehu and Sabon Gida, as well as Dagara communities where three women and unspecified numbers of men were kidnapped, remains terrifying."

Security experts believe that despite declaring bandidos as terrorists, the Nigerian government was not doing enough to dislodge them.

Dr. Yahuza Ahmed Getso said, "The attack on Birnin Gwari yesterday confirms that Nigerian security operatives lack the equipment to confront the bandidos, especially along the Birnin Gwari highway."

It is widely believed that the aerial bombardment of terrorists' hideouts in bushes across the Northwest region must be done simultaneously to end banditry in Nigeria.

However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
despite continued havoc on communities by bandidos in parts of Kaduna State, the state government through its Commissioner of Internal Security Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, has insisted that operatives were winning the war against terrorism.

Four Abducted UNIPORT Students Regain Freedom
[SaharaReporters] Four students of the University of Port Harcourt, who were kidnapped last weekend, have regained their freedom.

The students were returning from the Ahoada area of Rivers State before their abductors struck and whisked them away.

They, however, beat feet from the kidnappers on Wednesday morning when a team of security operatives invaded the hideout with heavy firepower and engaged the abductors.

Spokesperson for the university, Sam Kpenu, while confirming the release of the four victims, disclosed that they had since reunited with their families.

Kpenu noted that the students had as part of their academic exercise gone to the Orashi area (Ahoada) to conduct vegetation sampling for their final year projects when they were seized by the kidnappers.

He said, "Four students of the University of Port Harcourt who were kidnapped last weekend have been released and reunited with their families.

Sinaloa Cartel Commander Arrested in Mexican State Bordering Texas
[BREITBART] Mexican border state authorities arrested a regional commander for the Sinaloa Cartel in Nuevo Leon. The cartel figure is believed responsible for kidnappings and executions in the area after the cartel began a pie fight in late 2021.

This week, state authorities arrested Alan Ervey "El Cano" Juarez Castillo in the Monterrey metropolitan area. According to law enforcement sources in Nuevo Leon, El Cano is believed to be the leader of Sinaloa Cartel strike teams targeting incumbent drug distributors. After the arrest, El Cano’s button men clashed with authorities in several parts of the city, leading to seven more collars. Authorities killed two unidentified button men in the process.

El Cano has a long history of criminal activity in Nuevo Leon. In 2017, he spent time at the Topo Chico state prison and has an outstanding warrant on murder and kidnapping charges.

Sinaloa Cartel operators are using heavy weaponry and large teams of button men. While the Sinaloa Cartel kept a presence in Nuevo Leon for years, their operators usually avoided prominent tactics to curtail attention. Late last year, they began deploying strike teams. The cartel managed to keep a low profile for months by focusing on kidnapping and the stealth disposal of victims. This method differs from the street shootings favored by rivals like the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas, the Gulf Cartel, and Los Billy’s.

Iraq
Office of Kurdish official attacked in Kirkuk
[Rudaw] The office of a Kurdish politician, who was recently elected deputy speaker of Iraqi parliament, in Kirkuk city was attacked with grenades late Wednesday but did not cause any casualties, the official told Rudaw.

Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) Shakhawan Abdullah, who was elected as the second deputy speaker of the Iraqi legislature earlier this month, told Rudaw that his office in Kirkuk city was attacked with grenades but only caused material damage.

"Security forces went to the incident area and have launched an investigation," he added.

Several attacks have taken place against offices of political parties in Iraq this month, including kaboom on KDP office in Baghdad on January 13. No group has shouldered responsibility for the attacks.

Outlawed Group Resurfaces, Raising Fears of Clashes in Myanmar
[BenarNews] Residents of western Myanmar’s Rakhine state say they are concerned over possible armed festivities in Maungdaw township along the country’s border with Bangladesh amid a recent uptick in activity in the area by the outlawed Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army.

ARSA, which has joined Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government (NUG) and other armed ethnic groups in fighting the junta following its Feb. 1, 2021, coup, has been moving aggressively to establish control over sprawling refugee camps in Bangladesh, where about 740,000 Rohingya fled after a crackdown by Myanmar’s military in 2017. The crackdown came in response to ARSA’s attack on Rakhine police posts.

A rival group, the Buddhist Arakan Army (AA), agreed to a ceasefire with Myanmar’s military in late 2020, and ARSA appears to be taking advantage of the relative calm, residents of Maungdaw told Radio Free Asia (RFA).

[NPASyria] A member of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) lost his life, on Wednesday, and two others were maimed by unidentified button men in a town east of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

A military source from the SDF in the town of Hajin, 110 km east of Deir ez-Zor, said unidentified button men riding a cycle of violence opened fire on an SDF military vehicle near Hajin Hospital in the center of the town, which led to the loss of one’s life and the injury of two others.

Northwest Syria witnesses shelling between government and opposition
[NPASyria] On Wednesday, the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria witnessed military escalation and mutual shelling between the Syrian government forces and the Ottoman Turkish-backed armed opposition factions.

The government forces, from their positions in the Regiment 46, bombed the opposition factions’ sites in the towns of Kafr Amma, Kafr Ta’al and Kafr Noran, west of Aleppo, with heavy artillery and missiles, opposition military sources told North Press.

The opposition factions’ sites near the towns of Qoqfin and al-Bara in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib, were also hit with the government forces’ shelling, the sources added.

Similarly, the opposition factions’ sites in the town of Sarmaniya, west of Hama, were bombed. No casualties were reported though.

Meanwhile,
...back at the chili cook-off, Chuck reached for the green sauce...
al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room bombed the military points of the government forces near the Regiment 46 in the western countryside of Aleppo, with heavy artillery and missiles, the sources noted.

During the past few days, the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria witnessed relative calm regarding the mutual shelling between the two sides of the conflict, after months of military escalation.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Ottoman Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
