[NEWS.YAHOO] A North Carolina police officer was killed in a shootout early Friday while responding to a breaking and entering call, authorities said.
Mount Holly police officer Tyler Herndon was one of several officers to respond to a call at Mount Holly Car Wash and Arcade around 3:30 a.m. Friday, according to a news release from Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
Herndon was shot during a shootout between the breaking and entering suspect and police officers, authorities said. Herndon and the suspect were taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center, but it's not clear when Herndon died.
Police charged Joshua Tyler Funk, 24, of Mount Holly, with first-degree murder. Funk is jailed without bond and he has not been assigned an attorney, according to a court clerk.

[KhaamaPress] Afghan National Police (ANP) has arrested at least one suspected terrorist during in an operation in Lashkar Ghah city, said the Ministry of Interior Affair in a statement Thursday night.
According to the statement, the suspect is involved in a number of assassinations across the province.
"ANP arrested a terrorist in PD#2, Lashkar Gah City of Helmand ...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan... province," said the MoIA in a tweet. "The terrorist was involved in many assassinations."
Officials did not provide further details, but said the "ANP seized two pistols, one cycle of violence, one cell phone and some amount of ammunition."
While a full detail on the identity of the suspect remains unclear, the country is known for countless terrorism by the Taliban ...mindless ferocity in a turban... holy warriors.
Taliban did not immediately comment on the incident.
[Military.com] U.S. aircraft carried out two strikes Thursday against a stronghold of al-Qaida-linked al-Shabaab rebels in Somalia, days after President Donald Trump ordered a withdrawal of the estimated 800 U.S. troops in the East African nation, according to U.S. Africa Command.
"We will continue to apply pressure to the al-Shabaab network" despite the drawdown, Army Gen. Stephen Townsend, AFRICOM's commander, said in a statement. "They continue to undermine Somali security and need to be contained and degraded."
The airstrikes targeted al-Shabaab explosives experts near the town of Jilib, about 207 miles southwest of Mogadishu in the Lower Juba valley, AFRICOM officials said.
At a U.S. Naval Institute forum last week, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley said that the Lower Juba valley remained an al-Shabaab stronghold despite years of U.S. airstrikes and efforts to train Somali security forces in fighting the rebels.
"[Al-Shabaab] remains a dangerous franchise of Al Qaeda," Townsend said in his statement. "We continue to monitor the threat and support our partners through training and military and diplomatic engagement."
Townsend added that the U.S. was relocating forces in the region, possibly to Kenya and Djibouti, "but we will maintain the ability to strike the enemy."
AFRICOM gave no indication of the type of aircraft used in the strikes, but officials said the initial damage assessment showed that the airstrikes "killed terrorists who were known to play important roles in producing explosives for [al-Shabaab], to include vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices."
AFRICOM officials said the VBIEDS, a main weapon for al-Shabaab, have been used an estimated 45 times in Mogadishu alone since 2018 and had killed more than 400 civilians, security forces and government officials.
Last Friday, the Defense Department confirmed that Trump had ordered the withdrawal of most troops from Somalia. The effort is in line with his mandate to reduce the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan from 4,500 to 2,500, and from 3,000 to 2,500 in Iraq, by Jan. 15.
In a statement, DoD said "the majority" of troops in Somalia would be withdrawn, leaving the possibility that a small number would remain in Mogadishu for a continuing advise and assist mission DoD with Somali forces.
"While a change in force posture, this action is not a change in U.S. policy," DoD said. "We will continue to degrade violent extremist organizations that could threaten our homeland while ensuring we maintain our strategic advantage in great power competition."

The country's National Anti-Terrorism Committee said an unidentified person tried to break into an area where police were conducting searches.
The person then triggered the bomb when officers tried to arrest him, the committee said, adding that 'six officers were lightly injured' in the blast.
The unidentified man carrying explosives also died at the scene.

ZURICH (REUTERS) - Austrian police seized a huge cache of automatic weapons, explosives and hand grenades intended to arm right-wing extremist groups in Germany, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said on Saturday.
Five people were arrested following a series of house searches, Nehammer told a press conference in Vienna. "We have struck a massive blow against the right-wing extremist scene in Austria and organised crime, and how they are connected," Nehammer told reporters.
The group had built up the arsenal with the goal of attacking society, democracy and basic freedoms, Nehammer added.
The raids were carried out as part of an investigation initially into drug-related crime, but officers also uncovered links between far-right groups and organised crime, the minister said.
The network was active in Germany, with officers from Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia also involved in the inquiry.
The raids led to the seizure of 25 semi-automatic and fully automatic weapons, believed to have been bought with the proceeds of drug trafficking, said Michael Mimra from the state criminal police office in Vienna.

Police in Belgium are looking for four men who used a train’s public address system to threaten a bombing of the vehicle near Antwerp unless Jewish passengers step off.

[AnNahar] A fire destroyed a warehouse occupied by migrants colonists near Barcelona killing at least two people and injuring 19, including several who jumped from the building to escape the flames, Spanish officials said Thursday.
The blaze broke out at around 9:00 pm (2000 GMT) on Wednesday in an industrial area of Badalona, a Barcelona suburb, where up to 200 migrants colonists lived in squalid conditions, according to Badalona city hall.
Firefighters said they had so far found two bodies but could not rule out that more fatalities since they have not been able to enter the three-story building which had been occupied by squatters for years.
The blaze has been brought under control but firefighters were working to stabilise the structure of the warehouse to safely enter it and look for anyone who may be trapped inside, fire chief David Borrell told news hounds at the scene.
"We are trying to determine if there are any sign that there are more people or not," he said.
At least 19 people were maimed, including seven seriously, Catalonia's civil protection agency said in a tweet.

Hundreds of protesters rallied on Friday evening in downtown Columbus, Ohio, demanding justice and transparency from investigations into the killing last week of a young Black man shot by a sheriff's deputy outside his home.

I’m still recovering from turning ten pounds of potatoes into latkes during the early part of the week... and it looks like I’ll have to repeat the exercise tomorrow, as over three quarters have already been eaten. My mother regards cooking as a duty rather than a pleasure, Besoeker. When I was a child, she used to open a can of Manischewitz potato latke mix, slicing the things directly into the pan. (Manischewitz no longer sells this option, for good reason.) I had no idea there was anything better until I was exposed to homemade ones when the trailing daughters were young, at which point I started looking at recipes. This is the recipe I finally settled on:
Chef Harry Rubenstein’s Hanukkah Latkes
5-6 large Russet potatoes, peeled (5 lb.)
~2 cups neutral oil (canola, grapeseed – NOT olive)
2 medium onions, peeled
3 large eggs
1/4 cup breadcrumbs, matzah meal, flour (can be gluten free), or potato starch
2 tsp baking powder
Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
Topping of your choice (applesauce, sour cream, etc.)
Line a large sieve with cheesecloth or kitchen towel; place sieve over a large mixing bowl, then set near grating station. Next to the stove, cover a layer of newspaper with paper towels. Set more newspaper and paper towels near at hand for additional layers.
Using a box grater or food processor, grate together potatoes and onions, alternating to mix shreds. Add grated potato mixture to sieve, then sprinkle with salt to encourage fluid release, stirring to distribute. When all the potatoes and onions have been grated, pull up cheesecloth/kitchen towel to squeeze moisture out of potatoes. Let starch settle out, about 5 minutes, then pour off liquid, leaving the potato starch at the bottom of the bowl. Stir in bread crumbs and baking powder. Whisk eggs to combine, then mix into the potato starch mixture. Finally, stir in the grated potatoes.
Set a large frying pan over medium-high heat, then pour in oil to ¼” depth. Heat until oil is shimmering, about 360F degrees on a candy/deep-fat thermometer. Stir potato mixture, then dip out a scant ¼ cup (50 ml) if want large pancakes, or a heaping tablespoon (30 ml) if want small, for each latke. Do not crowd in pan. Fry latkes until golden brown on bottom before turning over, about 3 minutes per side. When golden brown on the second side, remove from pan to let drain on a thick layer of newspaper covered with paper towels. Stir potato mixture again before dipping out the next set of pancakes. Add more oil to pan as needed. When paper towels are covered with latkes, sprinkle with a pinch of salt and freshly ground pepper to taste, cover with another layer of paper towel and another section of newspaper, then another layer of paper towels on which to lay the next layer of pancakes.
If not serving immediately, let cool to room temperature. If to be served within 4 hours of making, keep covered at room temperature; otherwise, spread on cookie sheets to flash freeze, then store in freezer bags. Reheat in 375F oven until hot and crisp.
Traditional condiments are sour cream (or substitute plain Greek yoghurt) and applesauce. Apparently Ashkenazi Jews have been arguing for generations over which one is correct, but I like both.

"Lebanon is a parliamentary democracy, its politicians and leaders should be removed from office at the ballot box rather than by the bullet or a bomb," she said.
Prosecutors had called for a life sentence for each of the five counts Ayyash was convicted of.
