Africa Horn
Militant Groups Look to Exploit Somaliland-Puntland Tensions
[All Africa] As fighting and fiery
...a single two-syllable word carrying connotations of both incoherence and viciousness. A fiery delivery implies an audience of rubes and yokels, preferably forming up into a mob...
rhetoric increase between the Somali region of Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
and the self-declared independent state of Somaliland, some analysts fear that Islamist bad boy groups may try to exploit any instability to plant deeper roots in the area.

"Our concern is that were there to be a direct conflict between Somaliland and Puntland, the security forces will be preoccupied with that, and would not be in a position to contain al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
or the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
," says E.J. Hogendoorn, deputy director of the Africa Program at the International Crisis Group.

"Obviously, this will give them the chance to expand their reach," he told VOA.

Sool and Sanaag
Somaliland and Puntland have had a long-running dispute over the provinces of Sool and Sanaag, which run from the Gulf of Aden all the way to the eastern borders of Æthiopia.

Violence erupted again this January when Somaliland troops attacked and captured the town of Tukaraq, which headquartered a customs station for Puntland.

The Somaliland attack on Tukaraq was carried out while President Mohammed Abdullahi Farmajo of Somalia was visiting Puntland, in what the ICG described as a "warning from Somaliland to the Somali government against getting involved in the contested areas."

Ali Ibrahim, a development expert working with an International NGO in Somalia, said it is hard to determine the strength of the sides in the disputed region.

"Both sides claim they are stronger, well-armed, and have the necessary skills to defend their ’land’," Ibrahim said.

Shabaab, IS have toeholds
Although Puntland and Somaliland have enjoyed relative peace and security compared to the rest of Somalia, there are pockets where al-Shabaab and the IS faction are present and continue to threaten and attack security forces, mostly in Puntland.

On July 20, al-Shabaab seized the small town of Af Urur, 95 kilometers south of the coastal city of Bosaso, in Puntland. The town has been a scene of previous heavy fighting between the terror group and Puntland security forces, including the attack of June 10, 2017, described as the deadliest on security forces since Puntland’s founding in 1998.

"There’s a mountain range that kind of basically spans this region, called the Galgala Mountains, in which there’s been an al-Shabaab faction for quite some time," said the ICG's Hogendoorn. "As far as we know, they do operate within this region. And, depending on whether you consider it to be Somaliland or Puntland areas, this is an issue."

The Islamic State in Somalia, which broke away from al-Shabaab, is reported to have presence along the coastal region of Puntland.

"ISIS in Somalia doesn't control any territory, but maintains influence and a very small presence in northern Puntland," said U.S. Air Force Major Karl Wiest, front man of U.S. Africa Command.

In May of this year, IS fighters attacked a Puntland army base near the town of Qandala on the Gulf of Aden. They had taken over Qandala twice in 2016 and 2017 before been driven out by Puntland forces.

"These groups [al-Shabaab and Islamic State] are a threat to peace and stability of Somaliland and Puntland," said Ibrahim.

Gaza incendiary balloons spark 10 fires in southern Israel Saturday
[IsraelTimes] IDF strikes 2 separate groups of Paleostinians launching flaming devices over the border amid reported uptick in arson attacks

Over forty fires broke out in southern Israel over the weekend sparked by incendiary balloons launched over the border from the Gazoo Strip, according to reports in the Hebrew-language media.

On Saturday, firefighters battled 10 fires in the areas adjacent to the Gazoo Strip, and over 30 fires the day before, public broadcaster Kan reported. The broadcaster said it was the highest number of arson attacks since Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, declared an unofficial ceasefire with Israel last month.

In response to the continued launching of incendiary balloons from Gazoo, the IDF on Saturday said it struck two separate cells of Paleostinians flying the devices over the border.
Another Times of Israel article adds:
The Hamas-run health ministry in the Gaza Strip said earlier Saturday that a 15-year-old Palestinian died of his wounds hours after being shot in the stomach by Israeli soldiers during clashes at the border on Friday.

Several Palestinians hadbreached the border fence during the large protests.

Israel intercepts second Gaza-bound activist ship
[Ynet] IDF intercepts a second Gazoo-bound activist boat, which is part of the 'Freedom Flotilla,' in less than a week; Swedish-flagged ship with 12 activists on board was taken to the Port of Ashdod and the those on board had been taken in for 'further inquiry'; Last Sunday, the Israeli navy intercepted a Norwegian-flagged activist boat that was part of the flotilla.

The Israeli navy intercepted a Swedish-flagged activist boat bent on breaching its more than decade-long blockade of Gazoo, the second in less than a week, the military said on Saturday.

"The ship was monitored and was intercepted in accordance with international law," the army said in a statement, before the vessel, named Freedom for Gazoo and carrying 12 people, was taken to the Port of Ashdod.

"The (military) clarified to the ship's passengers that they are violating the legal naval blockade and that any humanitarian merchandise can be transferred to Gazoo through the Port of Ashdod," the statement said.

The people on board were taken for "further inquiry".

Freedom was the second boat of the "Freedom Flotilla" to be intercepted en route to "break the blockade" on Gazoo, organisers said.

The boat was carrying medical equipment.

Four boats left from Scandinavia in mid-May and stopped in some 28 ports along the way, with two remaining behind after a recent stop in the Italian port of Palermo.

Last Sunday, the Israeli navy intercepted a Norwegian-flagged activist boat that was part of the flotilla.

Syrian army thwarts terrorist attack north of Hama Province
Hama (Syria News) Syrian army troops managed, on Saturday, to foil a terrorist attack on al-Zilaqiat area, in the northern countryside of Hama Province.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that terrorist groups belong to al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front and its allied militias attacked the area of al-Zilaqiat, in the northern countryside of Hama Province.

The army troops engaged with the terrorist holy warriors and managed to thwart the attack, killing and wounding large number of casualties, SANA added.

Iran protesters attack religious school in province near Tehran
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iran protesters have attacked a religious school in Karaj province near Tehran, the conservative Fars news agency reported on Saturday.

"At 9 pm (1530 GMT on Friday) they attacked the school and tried to break the doors down and burn things," Fars quoted the head of the school in the town of Ishtehad, Hojatoleslam Hindiani, as saying.

It gave only his holy manal rank -- Hojatoleslam -- not his given name.

"They were about 500 people and they chanted against the system but they were dispersed by the riot police and some have been jugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
," Hindiani said.

Iranian authorities have barely mentioned days of protests in the cities of Isfahan, Shiraz, Mashhad and Tehran, driven by concerns over the economy as well as wider anger at the political system.

During past unrest, conservative outlets have focused on attacks against sensitive symbols such as religious buildings as a way of tarnishing the protests.

Videos on social media in recent days have shown people chanting "Death to the dictator."

Describing the attack on Friday evening, Hindiani said: "These people came with rocks and broke the sign and all the windows of the prayer house and they were chanting against the system."

Foreign media are barred from observing or filming "unauthorized" protests.

The videos on social media suggest protests in recent days are far from the scale of the unrest seen in December and January, when at least 25 people were killed in demonstrations that spread to dozens of towns and cities.

The Iranian rial has dropped to a record low amid growing concerns about renewed American sanctions, due to kick in on Monday.
