Afghanistan
Alleged Herat Kidnappers Executed by Taliban
[Tolo News] Taliban leaders in western Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
province have executed two alleged kidnappers by firing squad after holding a drumhead court-martial, local officials said.

According to reports, two men allegedly kidnapped the child of a family in the Pashtun Zarghun district. They were captured by the Taliban while the father of the child was paying them for the child's release.

"Although, the exact location of the [execution] is not clear yet, there are insecure areas in the Obe district in which the incident probably took place," Herat police chief Gen. Sayed Abdulghafar Sayedzada told TOLOnews.

Residents of Obe district confirmed that the Taliban executed two people by firing squad in the district after holding the drumhead court-martial while scores of residents were watching.

TOLOnews obtained amatuer footage of an execution showing two men being blindfolded and executed.

Herat Governor Dr. Daud Shah Saba also confirmed the reports, saying that the Taliban killed the two civilians ten days ago after charging them with kidnapping.

"These people escaped the law and have gone to these criminals [Taliban]. And the Taliban killed them in a volley of bullets at a drumhead court-martial," he said.

He condemned the actions of the Taliban, saying that the kidnappers had been associates of the Taliban and were collaborating in most of the kidnappings throughout Herat.

Afghanistan's Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) in Herat denounced the execution and drumhead court-martials.

AIHRC chief, Herat office, Abdulqader Rahimi said: "A drumhead court-martial is not accepted by the Human Rights Commission by any means. We ask that those who have acted this crime to be referred to the judiciary organizations."

He said the commission officials are concerned about the increase of other groups exacting justice in the western provinces.

Officials added that the alleged kidnappers had been under investigation by the police but the Herat police had not succeeded in identifying and arresting them which opened the way for the Taliban to act as they did.

5 Taliban Leaders Among 30 Dead in Wardak Raid: Isaf
Five high-ranking Taliban capos were killed in a six-day operation in central Wardak province which also killed an Afghan soldier and up to 30 other suspected Death Eaters, Isaf said Thursday.

According to Isaf's operations update, the five leaders killed were Ahmad Shah, a leader in the Chak-e district; Mullah Malang, an improvised bomb (IED) expert; Zubair, who provided logistical support to the Death Eaters; Rasul Jan, a 'cell' leader who led 30-40 gun-hung tough guys and specialised in kabooms; and Wahdat, a Taliban leader who was known to have coordinated attacks in the province.

The joint operation of Afghan and Isaf forces, launched against gun-hung tough guys in Wardak's Chak district, ended Wednesday with one Afghan soldier and as many as 30 gun-hung tough guys dead. A civilian was injured by small-arms fire but is being treated at a medical facility, Isaf said.

Almost 36 other suspected gun-hung tough guys were placed in long-term storage

during the operation, it added.

a Haqqani controller in Paktiya province Thursday, Isaf said.

According to Isaf, the controller, who was captured in Tsamkani, allegedly financed and obtained weapons for the Haqqani network, managed and recruited suicide kaboomers, and participated in attack planning against Afghan and coalition forces.

in eastern Ghazni province's Gelan district, Isaf said.

The controller made improvised bombs, is suspected of procuring and distributing explosives, mortars, and IED-building materials throughout the region and conducted IED attacks against Afghan and coalition assets, Isaf said.

4 Taliban Leaders Killed in Laghman, Herat Airstrikes
The leader of a Taliban group in eastern Laghman province was killed by an Arclight airstrike in a joint Afghan and Isaf military operation in the Alisheng district on Wednesday, Isaf said.

The leader, Rohullah Kahoon, is believed to be responsible for multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces using improvised bombs (IED), rocket-propelled grenades and indirect fire munitions, such as rockets and mortars, Isaf said.

According to Isaf's Wednesday operations update, the security forces identified Rohullah Kahoon and a group of armed Islamic fascisti before killing him and three of the Islamic fascisti via an Arclight airstrike.

Isaf also confirmed that at least two Arclight airstrikes have killed three Taliban capos in western Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
province's Shindand district.

An Arclight airstrike on Sept. 28 last week killed Mullah Sultan, a top Taliban leader and member of the Taliban Quetta Shura of Bala Baluk district, and Mullah Akhtar Mohammad.

Sultan was reported to have directed attacks against security forces and kidnapped Afghan civilians among other criminal activities such as sending Islamic fascisti into villages in Farah to intimidate the local population into not supporting the Afghanistan government, Isaf said.

Mohammad was reportedly involved in helping jacket wallahs and attacking Afghan and coalition troops in the area. He is also said to have intimidated the local population to disrupt local elections.

The third leader to be killed in Shindand was second-in-charge Mullah Mansur via an Arclight airstrike Sunday, Isaf said in Tuesday's operational update.

Mansur is said by Isaf to have commanded an IED cell and coordinated ambush attacks on Afghan National Security Forces in the province, in addition to moving IEDs and narcotics and recruiting young men for the insurgency.

Africa Horn
American jihadi struggles inside al-Shabab
After arriving in Somalia in 2006, Abu Mansoor al-Amriki joined the al-Shabab militia, fighting U.S.-backed African Union forces. And in Marka, Somalia he ruled. Omar Salim, a resident said, "Everybody feared him."

For the past three years, he lived in this bucolic oceanside town with three wives and five children in a small residence on a narrow pathway. Known in Arabic as Abu Mansoor al-Amriki, he had come a long way from his home in Alabama.

Amriki, whose real name is Omar Shafik Hammami, has been the militia's most visible face, using social media Web sites to spread terrorist propaganda. In some videos, he raps, praising jihad and extremist Islam. He was indicted in the United States on charges of terrorist activities, and a federal warrant was issued for his arrest in 2007.

But in recent months, there have been shifts in his rhetoric, from defiance to fear to a quest for survival and relevance. In one video, he portrayed himself as a victim facing a death sentence ordered by his own comrades. He has even penned the first part of an online memoir in which he describes himself as "a middle-class white guy" who can "only pray that Allah grants me a righteous ending."

Western and Somali security experts say Amriki's journey is a reflection of the divisions and struggle for identity within the militia itself as it suffers major loses on the battlefield. A visit with African Union forces to Marka, in an area the militia once controlled, provided an on-the-ground look into Amriki's life as a jihadi, as well as the militia's current state.
It couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy. Drink this cup to the dregs, Mr. Hammami, for it was you who grew and plucked the grapes, you who trampled them and barrelled the juices to make wine.
Apparently Allah isn't hearing his prayer about "please don't let them kill me!"...

U.S. officials clarify administration description of two heroes in Libya attack

Zawahiri's Brother Defends Benghazi Suspect
Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal reported that fighters "linked to" an Egyptian terrorist named Muhammad Jamal Abu Ahmad took part in the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. Ahmad was freed in 2011, after the fall of Hosni Mubarak's regime. The WSJ's account has clearly angered one of Ahmad's friends -- Mohammed al Zawahiri, who helped lead the protest at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo the same day as the attack in Libya. Mohammed al Zawahiri is the younger brother of al Qaeda emir Ayman al Zawahiri.
It's almost as if they all stick together...
Ahram Online reports today that Mohammed al Zawahiri is "slamming" the WSJ account. Mohammed al Zawahiri claims that "the Salafist movement does not commit acts of violence and that Ahmad is innocent."
Then, of course, his lips fell off...
He adds that the WSJ article is just an attempt to stir up trouble between Salafist groups and Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

No one should take Mohammed al Zawahiri at his word. As a commander in the Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ) organization, a core part of the al Qaeda joint venture, he has established a web of nefarious ties that go far beyond his brother. In fact, according to the very same WSJ article Mohammed al Zawahiri objects to, he helped put Ahmad in touch with Ayman al Zawahiri.

"U.S. officials believe [Mohammed al Zawahiri] has helped Mr. Ahmad connect with the al Qaeda chief," the WSJ reported.

The WSJ explains: "Western officials say Mr. Ahmad has petitioned the chief of al Qaeda, to whom he has long ties, for permission to launch an al Qaeda affiliate and has secured financing from al Qaeda's Yemeni wing."

Given that Ahmad's forces are suspected of taking part in the Benghazi attack, which reportedly involved other al Qaeda parties (al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Ansar al Sharia, etc.), it would be a mistake to assume that nothing came of Ahmad's petition of Ayman al Zawahiri. Not just anyone receives financing from al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), as Ahmad reportedly has.

This brings us back to Mohammed al Zawahiri. He denies everything, of course. Mohammed al Zawahiri denies that he has resumed his terrorist career. He also denies having anything to do with the ransacking of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, claiming that he only meant to launch a protest outside the compound's walls.

U.S. intelligence officials, judging by the WSJ account and other reporting, clearly don't believe Mohammed al Zawahiri's denials. So the question becomes, what (if anything) is Morsi's government going to do about him and his ilk?
The more important question is, what will the American government do about him and his ilk? We're drone-zapping bad boyz in Yemen and Pakistan without regard for the feelings of the host government. Perhaps we should similarly disregard the Egyptians...
Of course, it was Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government that paved the way for Egyptian Islamic Jihad members and other terrorists to be released from Egypt's prisons in the first place. Then there is this, from CNN, on September 11 of this year:

A source with direct knowledge of Egyptian government talks with jihadists in the Sinai says al-Zawahiri is helping negotiations. The source says al-Zawahiri has the respect of the Islamists and the trust of the new government.

So while U.S. intelligence officials believe that Mohammed al Zawahiri is helping to put terrorists in touch with the head of al Qaeda, the Egyptian government "trust(s)" him to help negotiate with terrorists in the Sinai.

It is safe to say there is a major disconnect here.

Islamists Kill Two Civilians in Northern Mali
[An Nahar] Armed Islamists in northern Mali attacked a vehicle and killed two civilians overnight, a witness and local official said Friday.

"There were nine of us in the vehicle between Timbuktu and Douentza. The Islamists ordered us to stop, the driver slowed but they opened fire nonetheless and two people in the front were killed," a survivor told Agence La Belle France Presse.

A local official confirmed the incident and accused the region's Islamist masters of "sowing terror and desolation".

"I recognised the Islamists because there was a black flag on their car," the survivor recounted on condition of anonymity.

"After the shots went off, we all bravely ran away, left the vehicle and the two dead there. We hopped on a lorry that was heading for Douentza," he said.

Islamists groups with links to al-Qaeda took over northern Mali -- an area larger than La Belle France or Texas -- in March, on the back of an offensive by secular Tuareg rebels they soon overpowered.

The fabled city of Timbuktu is largely under the control of Ansar Dine, a group led by a former Tuareg rebel which is believed to have ties with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the network's North African branch.

The city's new rulers have implemented an extreme form of Islamic law, destroying world heritage shrines they see as sacrilegious and cracking down on women without veils.

A man accused of murder was executed in public as recently as Tuesday.

A month ago, Islamist fighters pushed south to take over the town of Douentza, which is now their southernmost outpost, sparking fears in Bamako that the fundamentalist rebels may seek to extend their grip beyond the largely desert north.

Civilian Killed During Manhunt in Yemen Port City of Aden
[Yemen Post] A Yemeni civilian was killed and another injured when the police fired randomly during a manhunt for a gunman in the port city of Aden, Almasdar Online reported Friday.

The website quoted local sources as saying the gunman fired at a security checkpoint in the Mansoura town and bravely ran away late on Thursday night.

"The police launched a hunt for him and during that they fired bullets in the air killing Abdrabu Khidr Al-Jaradi who was sitting in front of his home," the sources were quoted as saying.

Another civilian was injured and the police could not arrest the gunman, the website said.

Al-Mansoura town has been experiencing sporadic deadly festivities between gangs and the authorities in recent years coinciding with escalating struggle of the southern people including those seeking separation.

Also, Aden in general and Al-Mansoura in particular has been a scene for liquidations of senior military, security and intelligence officers and other officials and leaders amid the continuous massive hunt for Al-Qaeda Death Eaters.

Separately, the governor of Marib province has reached an agreement with tribes to allow the technical teams to fix the pylons which were attacked earlier this week, officials at the electricity ministry said.

The capital Sanaa and other cities have been plunged into darkness since the tribal saboteurs were preventing the authorities from repairing the damages suffered in the attack on the pylons in the notorious Al Shabwan district.

"The teams have already started their jobs and the Marib gas-fired power station will resume operation in the next few hours," according to the officials.

US suspected drone kills five persons in Shabwa
[Yemen Post] A US suspected drone targeted two vehicles in which al-Qaeda-linked Orcs and similar vermin were traveling in al-Saeed district of Shabwa governorate, killing five al-Qaeda suspects, local sources affirmed.

The sources said that an Egypt national and another leader of Al-Qaeda in Azan area were among the killed.

The Yemeni authorities say they sometimes allow to use US drones to attack hideouts and operatives of al-Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula seen by Washington among the most dangerous branches of al-Qaeda.

Though Al-Qaeda Orcs and similar vermin including big shots have been targeted by US drones in Yemeni southern and southeastern regions, US drones sometimes miss its target and kill civilians, tribal sources say.
Yemen's Parliament had summoned the Interior Minister Abdul-Kader Qahtan to ask him about US drone attacks that killed about thirteen persons including two women on Saturday in Rada town of Al-Baidha governorate.

In a session held last, members of parliament demanded to investigate US drone strikes that targeted "innocent persons" under pretexts of fighting al-Qaeda.
A politician, Sadeq Al-Basha, strongly criticized the attitude of the Yemeni government toward the drone strikes, affirming that extrajudicial killing is prohibited in all laws and legislations.

...Capital of the last overtly fascist regime in the world...
on opponents of the Syrian regime in Germany.

Prosecutors said the man, named only as Mahmoud El. A, was a Syrian secret service operative between April 2007 until his arrest in February 2012.

"It was his job to observe the activities of Syrian opposition members living in Germany and to spy on them," prosecutors said in a statement.

He allegedly passed on the information he received to a handler during regular meetings in Berlin, which increased in frequency after the outbreak of the "Arab Spring" in 2011.

"Since then, he reported especially on gatherings of Syrian opposition members critical of the regime. He handed his superior officer photos of people participating in demonstrations," the statement added.

The suspect was arrest on February 7 and has been in jug since.

He has largely admitted the charges against him, prosecutors said.

Lebanese Man Pleads Not Guilty to Cyprus Plot
[An Nahar] A Lebanese man accused of plotting an attack on Israeli tourists in Cyprus pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
on Friday before a criminal court in the southern city of Limassol, court sources said.

Hossam Taleb Yaacoub, who was enjugged
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
in the southern resort city some three months ago, appeared before the court under tight security.

The trial had been due to start in mid-September, but was delayed after the prosecution changed the charges against the suspect, reducing the original 17 charges down to eight and prompting requests for clarification from the defense.

Initially, police said the 24-year-old, who also holds a Swedish passport, was to be tried on terrorism charges, but these have since been changed to conspiracy and consent to commit a crime, and belonging to an unnamed criminal organization.

The charges refer to two visits he made to Cyprus in November 2011 and July 2012, when police suspect he was tracking the movements and planned arrival times of Israeli tourists on the holiday island.

The court agreed that Yaacoub should remain in jug until the next hearing on October 25.

Cyprus police have refused to comment publicly on the case, describing it as a "sensitive political issue" but did say Sherlocks have found no evidence to suggest he had any accomplices.

The suspect was reportedly enjugged
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
in a Limassol hotel room on July 7 after flying in from London's Heathrow.

Reports said he was enjugged
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
after a tip-off from foreign intelligence agencies, including Israel's Mossad spy service.

Cyprus bolstered security for Israeli interests on the island following a July 18 suicide kaboom in Bulgaria that killed six people, five of them Israeli tourists.

The Grand Turk
Erdogan Says Syria Will 'Pay Price' if It Strikes Again
[An Nahar] Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan again warned Syria on Friday it would pay a big price for further attacks, two days after a deadly cross-border shelling.

Erdogan reiterated that Turkey does not want war but is ready to act if threatened by the regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
, which has been at war with rebels since early last year.

"I am calling once more on the Assad regime and its supporters: Don't dare to test Turkey's patience," Erdogan told a large crowd of supporters of his ruling AKP party in Istanbul.

"Turkey will prevail without a scratch out of this incident and proceed on its way. But you will be crushed by it and pay a big price."

On Wednesday Syrian shells killed five Turkish civilians in the border town of Akcakale, prompting Turkey to hit back at Syrian army positions.

Turkey's government also obtained a one-year mandate from parliament authorizing military raids into Syria if necessary.

Erdogan again said Turkey was not interested in war but would not hesitate to retaliate against any attack and violation of its national security.

"We are not war-enthusiasts," said Erdogan, but he stressed that Turkey had waged many wars throughout its history and was "ready to fight for peace".

Turkey Returns Fire after New Syria Shelling
Turkey returned fire Friday after a new Syrian shell landed in on its territory close to their common border, NTV private news channel reported.

The Syrian shell landed in the Turkish town of Altinozu in Hatay province near the border, triggering an immediate response fire from Turkish forces, at around 1630 GMT.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The shells fell near a Syrian military position south of the rebel-held border post at Tal al-Abyad, in the northern province of Raqa, a monitoring group.

"The new shells landed near a military post south of the border crossing with Turkey," said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman, citing witnesses.

Hatay province is opposite the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib, while Raqa is further to the east in the strife-torn country.

Raqa province is home to many thousands of displaced Syrians fleeing violence from other areas of the country, activists say.

Israeli air force shoots down drone aircraft
The Israeli air force shot down a drone after it crossed into southern Israel on Saturday, the military said, but it remained unclear where the aircraft had come from.

The drone was first spotted above the Mediterranean Sea in the area of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip to the west of Israel, said military spokeswoman Avital Leibovich. Once it crossed into Israeli air space, it was escorted by air force jets.

At about 10 a.m. (0700 GMT), after it traveled east some 35 miles across Israel's southern Negev desert, the drone was shot down above a forest in an unpopulated area near the border with the occupied West Bank, she said.

"We are considering this interception successful," Leibovich said. Soldiers were searching the area where the drone was downed to locate and identify the drone, the military said.

Police, Worshippers Scuffle at Jerusalem Mosque Plaza
[An Nahar] Israeli police entered the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem's Old City on Friday after being stoned by worshipers, following several days of festivities there, Israeli police and witnesses said.

"Several hundred worshippers threw stones at police who were stationed at the Mughrabi Gate, forcing them to go onto the plaza and push them towards the middle," police spokeswoman Luba Samri told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Police and and an AFP correspondent said the forces had used sound bombs to disperse the crowds when people began throwing stones after the end of the weekly Friday prayers.

Some witnesses said police had also used tear gas.

The scuffles broke out after days of tension at the compound, which is referred to as the Temple Mount by Jews and Haram al-Sharif by Moslems.

On Thursday, police tossed in the calaboose

nine people. Five were Arab Israelis, who were accused of threatening Jewish and Christian visitors to the site, and four Israeli Jews, three of them rightwing activists who tried to force their way onto the plaza.

Another three Arabs and two Jews were tossed in the calaboose

on Tuesday for disturbing the peace and attacking police at the compound.

Hundreds Of Arabs Assault Guards At Temple Mount
Police forces charge through Mughrabi Gate to control angry mob

Following the conclusion of Friday prayers at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, hundreds of Arabs threw stones at security guards in the area. Police charged through the Mughrabi Gate in the Old City and fired stun grenades to disperse the angry mob.

Unconfirmed Paleostinian reports suggested that several people were lightly injured.

Police officials, having restored calm, said that they would arrest some of the stone throwers in the coming days.

Rabbi of the Western Wall and Holy Sites of Israel Shmuel Rabinovitch expressed shock following Friday's violent demonstration, assessing that it was meant to prevent Jewish worshippers from praying in the area during Sukkot. He said that it was up to the police to arrest those who "wish to harm the delicate fabric of the holy sites in the Old City, and to harass worshippers."

Rabbi Rabinovitch called on the public to continue observing the holiday at the Western Wall.

On Thursday, a confrontation at the Temple Mount plaza led to six arrests as a group of Mohammedan worshipers threatened Jewish visitors to the site.

According to a police spokesperson, about 30 Mohammedans began chanting "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) and tried to attack a group of Jews who were visiting the site. Police broke up the altercation, and placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
five Arabs and one Jew.

Jordanian Information Minister Samih Maaytah condemned the police's entry to the Temple Mount. He blamed the police for charging at the unarmed worshippers, and said that the police's policy harms the Mohammedan and Christian holy places.

The Temple Mount, holy to both Jews and Mohammedans, is closely monitored in order to defuse potential tensions between Mohammedan worshipers and Jewish and international visitors.

The plaza is under the management of the Islamic Wakf, with Israeli police responsible for security. Under Israeli rules aimed at keeping the peace at the volatile site, Jews are allowed to visit but not to worship there.

On Tuesday, Likud activist Moshe Feiglin was placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
for allegedly violating rules regarding Jewish prayer at the site.

Southeast Asia
MILF accuse Philippine military amid peace talks
On Friday, Muslim rebels said the military had provocatively violated a ceasefire while peace negotiators held crucial negotiations. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) made the accusation amid talks in Malaysia that could lead to the imminent signing of a roadmap to end the insurgency.

The MILF said the Philippine Marines had deployed more than 100 troops near Palimbang, a town on the southern Muslim homeland on Mindanao island where rebel troops were stationed, calling the move "provocative". A statement on its website said, "These troops of marines are not respecting and violating the ceasefire accord and the primacy of the peace process between the government and the MILF."

According to the statement, the troops arrived on Tuesday, the same day that the Malaysia talks began. It said, "We can not understand why they are doing it deliberately... while the talks are ongoing. It is only the government to blame when firefight erupts."

The military said it had moved troops into the area, but denied it had broken the ceasefire. The marine unit's commander, Colonel Alexander Balutan, said they were enforcing arrest warrants against "lawless elements" - none of them MILF members - who had illegally cut down trees in Palimbang.

Balutan said, "We have been directed by no less than (President Benigno Aquino) to conduct anti-illegal logging operations. I am not targeting the MILF nor any of their camps. They have no camps in the area."

This latest round of peace talks are expected to wrap up this weekend.

Alawite Group Calls on Sect to Join Syria Revolt
[An Nahar] A small group of Syrian Alawites, the same minority sect as Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
, urged their community to join the anti-regime revolt in the country, in a statement sent to Agence La Belle France Presse on Friday.

"O Alawites all across Syria, enough is enough, so rise in unity against (Assad's) corrupt family whose only goals are treason, money and power," said a statement signed by a new movement calling itself "Free Alawites".

It is the first such initiative in an uprising which was launched by activists from a cross-section of Syrian society but that has come to be dominated by the Sunni Mohammedan majority.

Alawites are an offshoot of Shiite Islam and estimated to make up about 10 percent of the population.

An Alawite activist and member of the Free Alawites speaking to AFP via the Internet charged that the Assad regime used sectarianism as a tool to try to crush the revolt.

"The regime has worked on building up (sectarianism) for a year and a half," said the activist, who identified himself only as Abu Jabal.

Asked if he feared that victims of regime violence would seek Dire Revenge™ against members of the Alawite sect, Abu Jabal said: "Of course people are angry, we consider that normal. But all this sectarianism will end when the regime falls."

The new movement, which Abu Jabal hopes will grow beyond a tightly-knit group of activists, aims to mobilize poor Alawites against the regime. Most Alawites live in the west of the country and have traditionally lived off the land.

"Agriculture feeds no one any more, there is no government planning or support for this region," said Abu Jabal. "The regime plays the sectarian card, but does not support the Alawites in practice."

Warplanes Hit Homs, Rebels Down Helicopter
[An Nahar] Warplanes pounded rebel-held areas of Homs in the Syrian city's heaviest onslaught for months on Friday, monitors said, as Turkey reportedly returned cross-border shellfire for the second time this week.

The festivities came as the U.N. condemned the Syrian army's deadly shelling of a Turkish border town on Wednesday, and "terrorist" car booms that killed almost 50 people in the war-torn country's second city Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
on the same day.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the bombardment of Khaldiyeh district was the most intense of Homs in five months, and the first time the regime has deployed fighter jets against the city.

Rebels hit back by downing a regime helicopter gunship in Damascus
...Capital of the last overtly fascist regime in the world...
province and seizing an army checkpoint outside the eastern city of Deir Ezzor, killing at least 12 soldiers, said the Observatory.

"holy shit! Allahu akbar! (God is greatest). The helicopter is falling!" a youth yelled as an aircraft was seen tumbling from the sky in flames on an amateur video that activists posted on the Internet.

The Observatory reported eight civilians and one rebel killed in Homs city and province, updating its Friday corpse count to 95 nationwide -- 37 soldiers, 35 civilians and 23 rebel fighters.

It said six civilians and 11 rebels were killed in Aleppo, where an Agence La Belle France Presse correspondent reported intense street battles in Arkoub district.

The forces of Evil have occupied health facilities and schools as makeshift bases, the journalist said, adding they move around the area through holes in the walls of buildings.

There also were signs of strain from troops in the city, with one officer admitting "the battle for Arkoub is as tough as the struggle for Hanano" last month, when rebels took control of a fortress-like compound for three days.

Conscripts fighting for the regular army spoke in different accents from across the country.

Flashing a V-for-victory sign, one young soldier said he missed his home in Homs province. "My people in Homs haven't seen me in three months," he lamented.

Despite the relentless violence, thousands of people demonstrated across Syria calling for the arming of the rebel Free Syrian Army and condemning the world's inaction, the Observatory reported.

The uprising, which began in March 2011 with pro-reform protests that were brutally crushed, has since turned into a civil war pitting mainly Sunni rebels against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Supressor of the Damascenes...
's minority Alawite-dominated regime.

Activists say more than 31,000 people have died in the conflict.

The world community has expressed fear the war could spill over into other countries in the region, exacerbated by exchanges of shelling between Syria and Turkey on Wednesday and Thursday.

Turkey had demanded strong U.N. action after Syrian fire killed five people in the border town of Akcakale on Wednesday, including a mother and her three children.

And on Friday, a Syrian shell hit the Turkish town of Altinozu in Hatay province, triggering an immediate response fire from Turkish forces at around 1630 GMT, said NTV news channel.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties.

The U.N. Security Council issued a toughly worded statement in response to Syria's initial shelling, although it was a rung down from a formal resolution.

"The members of the Security Council condemn in the strongest terms the shelling by the Syrian armed forces," it said.

Saying the shelling "highlighted the grave impact the crisis in Syria has on the security of its neighbors and on regional peace," the statement "demanded that such violations of international law stop immediately and are not repeated."

A statement agreed on Friday by the 15-nation council condemned the Aleppo kabooms "in the strongest terms" and expressed condolences to families of the victims "of these heinous acts."

On Friday, Turkish premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Syria it would pay a big price for any more attacks and reiterated Turkey does not want war but is ready to act if threatened.

"I am calling once more on the Assad regime and its supporters: Don't dare to test Turkey's patience," he told a crowd in Istanbul.

Prior to the latest shellfire, the border region between Turkey and Syria had been quiet on Friday, an AFP journalist in Akcakale said, although the Turkish military had amassed tanks and anti-aircraft missiles.

Inside Syria, protesters erupted into the streets of several cities and towns after being urged to turn out under the rallying cry: "We want weapons, not words, to protect our children from the killing".

"The people demand the arming of the FSA (Free Syrian Army)!" hundreds of men chanted outside a white mosque in Halfaya, Hama province, while holding the flag of the revolt.

Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, the SWAT team had finally arrived...
a rebel commander warned his fighters would execute dozens of Iranians they kidnapped inside Syria in August unless the army withdraws from the embattled Eastern Ghouta area of Damascus province.

"We gave the regime 48 hours starting yesterday to withdraw completely from the Eastern Ghouta area," Abul Wafa told AFP via the Internet. "We also have other secret, military demands. If the regime does not fulfill them we will start finishing off the hostages."
