Petraeus Radically Increasing War Intensity
November is ordinarily the month when the air war in Afghanistan — and really, the whole American-led campaign — ratchets down for the winter. This November, with Gen. David Petraeus in charge of the war effort, things have been different. Radically different.

NATO fighter jets and attack planes launched their bombs and missiles on 850 separate missions this November. That’s three-and-a-half times the number of attack sorties they flew in November 2009.

It’s another sign of the bloody turn the Afghan conflict has taken since Petraeus took over. Petraeus unleashed special operations forces, who have killed or captured thousands of militants.

His generals relied on massive surface-to-surface missiles to clear the Taliban out of Kandahar, and ordered tanks to help crush opponents in Helmand province.

And then there’s the metastasizing air war.

In the last three months, NATO aircraft have fired their weapons on 2,550 sorties, according to U.S. Air Force statistics provided to Danger Room. During the same period last year, there were less than half the number of violent sorties — just 1,188.

But that was under a different general, who had a very different attitude about airstrikes — and about the utility of violent coercion in the Afghan campaign.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal famously corralled the use of air power as he tried to implement a counterinsurgency strategy that put winning the locals’ allegiance as the primary goal. Even troops under enemy attack found it tough to call in a strike from above. Better to expose U.S. forces to some danger than risk alienating the population.

In public, Petraeus and his generals said that there would be no major changes to the so-called “rules of engagement,” which govern the use of force. Strikes from the sky were still considered a “choice of last resort,” as Brig. Gen. Jack Briggs II told Danger Room in August.

NATO officials tried to explain the uptick in these air attacks and other “kinetic” events as a function of increased troop numbers, or of those soldiers pushing into previously uncontested territory.

But with each passing month under Petraeus’ leadership, the shift to a more violent strategy becomes more apparent. By November, one U.S. military official was boasting about America’s “awe, shock and firepower.”

“The COIN [counterinsurgency] strategy is balanced by a counterterrorism strategy,” vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. James Cartwright recently told reporters. “When we started, we probably were more aligned with counterinsurgency. The emphasis is shifting.”

Taliban and other insurgent groups have responded in kind. Their bombs killed or wounded a thousand more troops in 2010 than they did in the previous year. The militants’ small-arms attacks on NATO forces nearly doubled.

#3  “The COIN [counterinsurgency] strategy is balanced by a counterterrorism strategy,” vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. James Cartwright recently told reporters.

This tells the tail. COIN in the areas that we and the Afghan government hold, counterterrorism in the areas that we don't. Finally, some common sense.

Somali troops seize al-Shabab weapons
[Iran Press TV] Somali government troops have nabbed a military truck carrying weapons to al-Shaboobs stationed on the outskirts of Mogadishu.

"On Thursday afternoon, government soldiers seized a vehicle at a first checkpoint in Afgooye town, situated about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) west of Mogadishu, as it was heading toward the Somali capital," Mareeq Online quoted Somali government official Ahmed Yare as saying on Friday.

Three men were captured in the operation, and AK-47 assault rifles, mortar shells, and improvised bombs were seized, he added.

The International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC) has reported that hundreds of civilians were maimed in fighting in Somalia in recent months.

The Geneva-based humanitarian institution said that a total of 5,000 patients with war injuries, including 1,900 women and kiddies, were admitted to Mogadishu's Keysaney and Medina hospitals from January through September.

Compared to last year, it is an increase of 25 percent in the total number of war casualties and 72 percent in the number of war-maimed women and kiddies admitted to the hospitals.

Boilerplate follows...
Somalia has not had a functioning government
since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

Over the past two decades, up to one million people have bit the dust in fighting between rival factions and due to famine and disease.

There are more than 1.4 million internally displaced people (IDPs) in Somalia. Over 300,000 of the IDPs are sheltered in Mogadishu.

The United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society High Commissioner for Refugees reported that most of the displaced live in poor and degrading conditions on makeshift sites in southern and central Somalia.

Seychellois court jails 9 Somali pirates
[Iran Press TV] A court in Seychelles has handed 22-year jail terms to nine Somali nationals charged with piracy, amid a drive to seek convictions for suspected pirates.

Acting Attorney General David Esparon said Friday that the court's verdict was based on consistent accounts from witnesses that contradicted the pirates' claims of innocence.

Esparon said the men hijacked two vessels in March -- a Seychellois fishing boat, Galate, and an Iranian ship, Al-Ahmadi -- both of which were freed by a Seychellois coastguard patrol boat, Topaz, following a shootout with the pirates.

He went on to add that another 15 suspected Somali pirates still await trial in the island nation.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
a court in Spain braces to try two Somali men suspected of taking part in the hijacking of a Spanish tuna trawler with its crew of 36 last year.

The National Court, Spain's top criminal court, will try the pair between January 31 and February 4, an official said on Thursday.

The Alakrana tuna trawler was seized on October 2, 2009 off the coast of Somalia and was released 47 days later.

One of the main criticisms directed at the international anti-piracy mission sent to the pirate-infested waters off the Somali coast is that despite the presence of frigates patrolling the waters the number of attacks has been on the rise since 2007.

However,
The infamous However...
the mission, including the NATO fleet, has repeatedly expressed frustration over the lack of a legal process that would see the pirates convicted rather than set free immediately or after a few months in detention.

"When we come across a boat with ladders on board, we can be sure they are pirates," complained a senior member of NATO's anti-piracy task force in October. "After all, there are no known window-cleaning operations in the Indian Ocean."

"There is obviously massive frustration," said Lt. Cdr. Simon Ward aboard the Danish warship, Esbern Snare added.

"We are out here to eradicate piracy. We are achieving that, in a way, but we are not sending people through the courts -- which is what we would like to see more of."

Somali pirates are currently believed to be holding more than 20 vessels and more than 500 hostages.

The vessels are held against millions of dollars in ransoms, which has helped turn piracy off lawless Somalia into a lucrative business now expanding further into the Indian Ocean.

This has triggered concerns that a few sky-high ransoms have tempted the pirates to prolong the negotiating period to seek larger sums for tankers and container ships.

#1  Plenty of precedent on how to handle pirates. Captain of capturing vessel is 'soverign' over his bit of floating turf, holds a summary trial, then hangs the pirates. If applied consistently the piracy problem will go away pretty quickly.

U.S. Embassy Warns its Citizens in Yemen
[Yemen Post] The U.S. Embassy in Yemen urged its citizens to be cautious and avoid gathering in the area where the last attacks on an embassy vehicle took place.

The embassy said in a statement on Friday that it is likely that a terrorist attack takes place at any moment anywhere in Yemen.

The statement came only two days after four U.S. embassy personnel in Sana'a were attacked at a restaurant often visited by foreign nationals.

An bomb was planted in the back of a pickup vehicle of American embassy employees. The vehicle had light damages while none of the four were maimed.

Yemeni authorities jugged a Jordanian, suspected of being behind the attack.

Violence Resumes in South Yemen after Championship Calm
Boys will be boys.
[Yemen Post] Four soldiers were killed and seven others injured when armed people, believed to Al-Qaeda cut-thoats, shot up a security checkpoint in south Yemen on Friday.

One of the maimed was quoted as saying that the gunnies arrived on three cycle of violences and two short buses to the checkpoint in Shahara area in Zunjbar, Abyan, and they started their 'merciless assault.'

About 20 soldiers were targeted early today, around 4:30 am, and the attackers used machine guns, hand grenades and RPGs, the soldier said.

"They surprised us immediately after dawn prayers, attacking us and pursuing us from a place to another."

The others were lucky and they barely survived being killed, the soldier added.

Eyewitnesses said the gunnies were shouting Allah is the greatest, and that the tent of the soldiers was completely destroyed.

A security source confirmed two soldiers were killed and five others injured, but gave no more details about the attack that resumes violence in the province where thousands of troops were deployed to secure the 20th Gulf football championship.

Abyan province has recently been a scene for violence including attacks against military camps, security checkpoints and officers and their cars, mainly blamed on Al-Qaeda and the separatist movement.

In Lahj, an officer and three soldiers were killed and four others injured in the violence that resumed between armed saboteurs and the army on Thursday, a source at the security committee in the province said.

In a statement, the source said saboteurs attacked at noon a number of troops while they were on duty in Al-Habilain district killing and injuring seven. A hunt was launched for the perpetrators to bring them to justice, the source said.

Tens of thousands of troops were deployed to Aden and Abyan to secure the soccer event that took place through November 22 to December 05.

No incidents were reported during the event, but shortly after it reports started to surface on resuming violence.

#1  The high daily usage of Khat by Yemeni men has to have something to do with this constant violence.

Khat chewing usually takes place in groups in a social setting. Only a minority frequently chew alone. A session may last for several hours. During this time chewers drink copious amounts of non-alcoholic fluids such as cola, tea and cold water. In a khat chewing session, initially there is an atmosphere of cheerfulness, optimism and a general sense of well-being. After about 2 hours, tension, emotional instability and irritability begin to appear, later leading to feelings of low mood and sluggishness. Chewers tend to leave the session feeling depleted.

Active constituents
Khat contains more than 40 alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals (Halbach, 1972). Most of the effect of chewing khat is thought to come from two phenylalkylamines – cathinone and cathine – which are structurally related to amphetamine (Nencini et al, 1984). The presence of amphetamine and caffeine in khat has been excluded. A number of other constituents, including cathidine, eduline and ephedrine, have been identified, but it is unlikely that any of these, except tannin, play a role in khat’s effects

Cathinone has been termed a ‘natural amphetamine’. It produces sympathomimetic and central nervous system stimulation analogous to the effects of amphetamine, hence its similar clinical effects. The difference in effect is due to slight pharmacodynamic variations between the stimulating substances, to other plant constituents (mainly tannins), and to differences in dosage and the mode of consumption.

Actions of cathinone and cathine
Cathinone is also named (–)-alpha-aminopropiophenone. It is considered to be the most active ingredient of khat. It has been isolated and synthesised and its effects have been shown to be similar to amphetamine, but with a lower potency. Cathinone is estimated to be 7–10 times more potent than cathine. It is difficult to synthesise, therefore it is unsuitable for marketing as a pure substance for drug misuse (Nencini et al, 1989).

Cathine is also named (+)-norpseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine. It had previously been isolated from the plant ephedra, which has effects similar to those of khat. Cathine has a milder psychostimulant action than cathinone and the effects last for only a short time, so the user must chew leaves almost continuously. It plays only a minor role in the action of khat, but it is cathine that is responsible for the unwanted systemic effects. Normally, fresh leaves contain a higher proportion of the desirable cathinone. Where the content of cathine is relatively higher, the cathine causes more unwanted systemic effects. On drying, cathinone breaks down into cathine. Therefore khat chewers prefer fresh leaves that contain a higher proportion of cathinone to cathine, so that they obtain a better stimulation with fewer systemic adverse effects.

Modes of action
The constituents of khat have been shown to exert their effects on two main neurochemical pathways: dopamine and noradrenalin. It has also been postulated that, like amphetamine, cathinone releases serotonin in the central nervous system. Both cathinone and amphetamine induce release of dopamine from central nervous system dopamine terminals and thus increase the activity of the dopaminergic pathways (Kalix & Braenden, 1985). Cathinone has a releasing effect on noradrenalin storage sites, which supports the conclusion that cathinone facilitates noradrenalin transmission. Drake (1988) also proposed that cathinone and cathine cause inhibition of noradrenalin uptake.

AQAP Commander Fahd Al-Quso Alive in Yemen
[Yemen Post] AQAP commander Fahd Al-Quso who was reported to have been killed in recent large-scale operations against hard boyz in the south has recently appeared in an interview with the London-based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper.
Bummer. Still, a great many others are now singing in the choir eternal. Commander Al-Quso will join them in time.
He denied the rumors he had been killed
"Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated."
and reports he was in Wazoo in northern Pakistain. My presence in Yemen is better amid the problematic situation with the government, he said.
Brave Sir Robin ran away.
Al-Quso, 46, is on the FBI list of the ten most-wanted suspects along with Bin Laden and Qaeda's second-in-command Ayman Al-Zawheri.

The U.S. also offered a $ 5-millon reward for information leading to his arrest after he was accused of playing a key role in the attack on the USS Cole destroyer in 2000.

The paper said its correspondent in the country had met with Al-Quso, Abi Huthaifa Al-Yemeni, in a mountainous area in southern Shabwa province, as it published photos for the correspondent, Arafat Mudabish, and Al-Quso.

Al-Quso did not deny or confirm AQAP has camps in Shabwa mountains, but he said the air strike on his ranch in December 2009 killed five Al-Qaeda members and destroyed the farm.

Moreover, he criticized the Yemeni government, saying it is exaggerating about Al-Qaeda presence on its soil to have a reason for killing innocents.

He added that the government offered him to surrender in return for guarantees and promises that he did not elaborate.

La Familia Threatens Guerrilla Warfare
Google Translate
by Chris Covert
The Mexican drug cartel based in Michoacan state known as La Familia is threatening to turn its battle with Mexican security forces into a guerrilla war complete with firefights and roadblocks, according to Mexican news sources.

A deliberate operation by Policia Federal last week resulted in the death of one of its leaders, Nazario Moreno Gonzalez, alias El Chayo, and has since become a rallying issue with those sympathetic with the cartel.

However, a statement released by Mexico's internal security apparatus, Secretaria de Gobernacion (Segob), said Friday security forces have La Familia "weakened", surrounded, and that federal forces will withdraw from Michacan only when crimes rates go down.

Last week's Policia Federal operation lasted for more than 24 hours and killed five Mexican Federal agents, as well as caused large amount of damaged heavy and personal vehicles destroyed by fire from roadblocks set up by fighters employed by La Familia in Apatzingan to Uruapan as well as Morelia, the capital of Michoacan.

The December 8th operation is unprecedented in its length and scope for Policia Federal operations which typically last only a few hours, as well as far more bloody for security forces involved. The distances involved encompassed an area of roughly 5,000 square kilometers, mainly constricted to the road system.

The La Familia statement released gave December 24th as a deadline for security forces to withdraw before the war begins. The statement was signed by Jesus Mendez Vargas, alias El Chango, Nazario Moreno Gonzalez, alias El Chayo and Servando Gómez , alias La Tuta.

The statement warns individuals starting December 24th to remain indoors beginning 2130 hrs and to avoid going to certain restaurants and clubs.

"We do not know the time we can attack ... Our organization is conducting night raids on establishments and on public streets..."

The statement warns Michoacans to complete travel plans before December 24, and the warning extends to neighboring states Colima, Jalisco, Queretaro, State Mexico, Guanajuato and Guerrero.

The clubs La Familia warns against in Morelia include The Grand Hotel, Emporio, Skye Club, Xo Club, Varsha, Exceso, Tucan, Manhatan, Continental, Mirage and Petacas.

Bars warned against include Antartico, Peña Bola Suriana, El Bazar, El Sotano, Angelus, La Porfiriana, Strauus Pool Bar, La Taberna, Sanyago and Emporio.

Cafes on the no go list include El Callejon, El Rincon de los Sentidos, Cafe Europa, Cafe El Conservatorio and Don Quijote.

#1  Okay, so they have declared war against Mexico.

Therefore, the government of Mexico should pass special laws about how they will deal with "insurrectos". Among other things, I would recommend doing what they did before, and internally deport the families of those engaged in civil war.

Welcome to your new home in the Yucatan.

Proceso: Cartel Alliance Says They Have 11 More Car Bombs
Google Translate. For a map, click here.
An formal alliance between the Sinaloa and Gulf cartels has released a statement saying they have 11 more car bombs in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon ready to detonate, according to an online story by the Mexican leftist weekly Proceso.

A car bomb exploded Friday afternoon in a remote town of General Zuazua northeast of Monterrey which wounded a police officer and a civilian.

Previous reports said the car, now identified as a Subaru sedan was parked in the police parking area sometime Thursday night. The bomb was detonated at about 1300 hrs Friday afternoon. Both victims were hit by metal and glass shrapnel.

The statement released to media editors complained about Nuevo Leon state police officials being assisted by Los Zetas criminal gang in abductions of civilians. The statement claims more than 1,000 hostages are being held by Los Zetas.

"The car bomb in Zuazua is against the hijackers", say the statement.

"Eleven more car bombs are waiting to be detonated to bring justice for the disappeared..." said the statement.

A total of four car bombs have been detonated in the Mexican drug war so far, all in 2010 and all within the last six months.

The bomb mid July in Juarez, Chihuahua was the deadliest with four killed and 11 others wounded. Two other bombs were detonated in late August all in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas. The Zuazua blast is the fourth such attack nationally and the first in Nuevo Leon.

Taliban blow up girls' school in Peshawar
[Pak Daily Times] Taliban blew up another girls' school in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar late Wednesday night. Matani police told Daily Times that Taliban bombed the primary school in Adezai area of Matani, a suburb of Peshawar. The building was destroyed completely, they added. On December 7, Taliban had blown up a primary school in Jogian near Tarnab Farm. Taliban have blown up at least 10 schools during the last few months.
Brave, brave Lions of Islam, waging jihad on defenceless buildings, so afraid that if given a choice, the people naturally would tick "anything but Islam".

Shia leader resigns over sectarian killing
[Pak Daily Times] Balochistan Shia Conference Vice President Syed Mussarat Husain has resigned from his party in a protest against a sectarian killing incident at the Arbab Karam Khan Road, on Wednesday.

Husain announced his resignation while addressing a presser at the Quetta Press Club on Thursday. He said that the law and order situation in Quetta was deteriorating.

He alleged that they had warned the security forces about the sensitive areas, especially Sariab Road, Arbab Karam Khan Road and Kirani Road, but they did not listen. On 3rd Muharram a police Sub-Inspector Wajid Ali Bangash was killed on Kirani Road and on 8th Muharram three people, including a child, were killed on the Arbab Karam Khan Road. Husain said police personnel were deployed on the road but even then the attackers managed to kill the people and flee the scene. He said that terminating the services of SHO Sariab would not solve the problem of sectarian killings. He demanded that those police personnel should be jugged who were on duty and cases be registered against them.

Mortar attacks kill nine in Pakistan
[Iran Press TV] Mortar attacks have left at least nine people dead in northwest Pakistain as mourning processions commemorate the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam Hossein (PTUI!).

Four mortars, fired from a neighboring district, slammed into two houses in the town of Hangu.

Police say six of the dead are Shia and three are Sunni Mohammedans, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Shia Mohammedans form a majority of the population of the region and are a constant target for Islamic myrmidon pro-Talibs in the volatile region.

The attack happened as Mohammedans in Pakistain mark the Ashura.

Meanwhile police in Southern Pakistain say they opened fire on a man planning to detonate a bomb amid a Shia mourning procession. Officials say the suspect detonated his bomb as he decamped and injured three coppers.

The developments come one day after a grenade attack killed a toddler and maimed several other people in the northwestern city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar on Thursday.

"One child, aged two years, has died and 26 others were maimed. There are 12 women and three children among the injured," said head of the city's Lady Reading Hospital Abdul Hamid Afridi.

Several incidents of violence against Shia Mohammedans have also been reported in other parts of the country.

Pak security officials say that they have seized arms, ammunition and explosives intended to be used in attacks against Shia mourning processions for Imam Hossein (PTUI!) in major cities.

Several Shia religious gatherings have been targeted in different parts of the country over the past few months.

Last year, bully boyz grabbed credit for a deadly attack that killed 43 people at an Ashura gathering in Bloody Karachi.

Since the 1980s, thousands of people have been killed in sectarian-related incidents in Pakistain.

Pakistain is also plagued with violence as it is struggling with non-UN-sanctioned US aerial strikes as well as attacks by bully boyz on NATO trucks carrying supplies to the US-led forces in war-ravaged Afghanistan.

Three US missiles kill 54 in Pakistan
[Dawn] Three American missile attacks killed 54 alleged snuffies Friday close to the Afghan border, an unusually high number of victims that included commanders of a Taliban-allied group that were holding a meeting, Pak officials said.

The attacks took place in the Khyber tribal region, which has been rarely struck by American missiles before over the last three years. That could indicate a possible expansion of the CIA-led covert campaign of drone strikes inside Pak territory.

The first strike targeted two vehicles in the Sandana area of the Tirah Valley, killing seven snuffies and wounding another nine. The men were believed to belong to the Pak Taliban, one of the country's largest and deadliest thug groups.

Later, missiles hit a compound in Speen Darang village where the Lashkar-e-Islam, a Taliban affiliate known to be strong in Khyber, were meeting, killing 32 people, among them commanders. The third strike took place in Narai Baba village and killed 15 Islamic exemplars, the officials said.

US officials do not acknowledge firing the missiles, much less comment on who they are targeting. It is impossible to independently report on the aftermath of the attacks because outsiders are not allowed to visit the tribal regions.

Human rights groups say there are significant numbers of civilian casualties in the attacks.

#1  Update
The drone programme is controversial in Pakistan, where politicians blame the attacks for killing civilians, stoking anti-western feeling and driving young men into the arms of Taliban recruiters.

Such is the sensitivity that the US refuses to acknowledge the use of drones and the Pakistan government publicly denies it has allowed American spies to launch attacks on its soil.

On Friday it emerged that the CIA had smuggled its station chief out of Pakistan after his cover was blown when he was named in a lawsuit seeking compensation for deaths allegedly caused by a drone attack.

The case, brought by a Pakistani journalist whose brother and son died in a drone strike last year, blamed Jonathan Banks, the CIA's top spy in Pakistan, along with Leon Panetta, CIA director, and Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, for the deaths.

His name was published by local and international media covering the case. Demonstrators in the heart of the capital, Islamabad, have carried placards bearing the officer's name and urging him to leave the country.

The station chief in Islamabad operates as a secret general in the fight against al-Qaeda. He runs the Predator drone programme, handles some of the CIA's most urgent and sensitive tips and collaborates closely with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency, one of the most important relationships in the spy world.

But in a rare move, Banks was summoned home on Thursday by the CIA, citing "security concerns".

And since "the human right's groups" can't visit the tribal areas either, their statement is based on what?

Pakistan cannot have it both ways. "The tribal regions are outside our [sovereign] control" and "Drone strikes in the tribal regions violate our sovereignty".

If they claim sovereignty in the tribal regions then stop the terrorist. Unless terrorism is the sovereign policy of the Pakistani government, in which case ....

First guess would be brother & son were Tali terrorists and the lawfare waging journalist probably is too.
If not, then what were they doing hanging around Tali terrorists?
I hope Banks or his replacement has good surveillance on the guy.

Bolivia recognizes Palestine as a state
[Iran Press TV] Following in the footsteps of over 130 countries, Bolivian President Evo Morales has officially recognized Paleostine as a state based on the 1967 borders.

The Bolivian Foreign Affairs Ministry said that Morales made the announcement at a summit of the South American trade bloc Mercosur on Friday in Foz de Iguacu, Brazil.

"Bolivia recognizes the Paleostinian state along 1967 borders, together with Brazil and Argentina," the Bolivian Foreign Affairs Ministry quoted Morales as saying.

The Bolivian president spoke with Acting Paleostinian Authority Chief the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas three days prior to the announcement and promised to act accordingly.

Bolivia now joins the list of South American countries that have recognized a fully sovereign Paleostinian state on the 1967 borders, the boundaries that existed before Israel captured East al-Quds (Jerusalem), the West Bank, and the Gazoo Strip.

I can see why Israel might do that, not clear on why America would though, hardly seems worth disrupting relations with Brazil in particular on behalf of a third country.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Israeli drone violates Lebanon airspace
[Iran Press TV] An Israeli reconnaissance aircraft has violate Lebanese airspace and flown over parts of the country, in defiance of a UN Security Council resolution.

According to the Lebanese military, the Israeli drone entered Leb's airspace from the south on Thursday night and hovered over the eastern parts of the country.

Leb's military often reports airspace violations by Israeli aircraft but does not usually open fire on them.

The airspace violations, which are reported on an almost daily basis, contravene United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the Israeli war on Leb in 2006.

The Lebanese government has submitted documentation to the UN proving that Israel has breached the provisions of the resolution on more than 7,000 occasions by violating Leb's airspace, territorial waters, and border.

The Thursday's airspace violation came as Lebanese President Michel Suleiman is preparing to submit an official complaint to the United Nations Security Council over Israeli espionage activities in Leb.

On Wednesday, the Lebanese army, acting on a tip from the resistance movement of Hezbullies, dismantled two Israeli spy systems planted in the mountains above the capital Beirut.

According to the army, the system found in Mount Sannine included a camera, a device to send images and a third to receive signals. The system covered with artificial boulders, was placed at a height of 1,715m.

The long-range surveillance device covered the towns of the western and central Bekaa Valley, towns in southern Leb, and parts of Syria.

Pictures released by the Lebanese army show the device bearing the words "mini cloud" in Hebrew, along with the name of the manufacturer -- Beam Systems Israel Ltd -- in English.

There was no information about the second device found in Mount Barouk. The army only said that it was "more complicated."
