PAKISTAN is allowing Taliban fighters wounded in battles with British and other Nato forces in Afghanistan to be treated at safe houses.
The Sunday Times found Taliban commanders and their fighters recuperating in the city of Quetta last week and moving freely around parts of the city.
In a white-walled compound in the northern suburb of Pashtunabad, more than 30 Taliban were recovering from the bloodiest fighting in Afghanistan since their regime was ousted five years ago.
Dressed in neatly pressed robes with the black turbans and kohl-rimmed eyes typical of the Taliban, they lounged on cushions, sipping green tea and sucking at boiled sweets while laughing at Nato reports that they have sustained heavy casualties.
Among the most defiant was a young commander who had been shot in the calf last month while fighting British troops in Gereshk, a town in the Afghan province of Helmand, and who had returned to Quetta to be treated. Fighting the British is as easy as eating a loaf of bread from my hand, he said in a soft voice. Fighting the British is much easier than the Americans. They have no faith.

Disproportionate retaliation against terrorists, as implemented in post WW2 Philipines and Malaysia, is the only thing that has ever worked against guerilla tactics. I have no doubt that the Sunday Times accurately reported Taliban bravado. I lived through the Vietnam experience and the fact that fighting unwinnable wars is a recipe for catastrophe should have impacted on our leader's brains. Taliban cannot be beaten if the UN and the OIC continue to support 350,000 (to 2 million) Afghan refugees in Pakistan, while these support a terrorist movement to the point of harborage and recruitment.
NATO took up the obligation of regime change and nation building in Afghanistan because our leaders assumed that it was wanted and would work; nation destruction remains an option. And given the fact that passive sections of that country are producing the bulk of the world's opium harvest, maybe destruction is the solution.

I'm a very strong supporter of ARCLIGHT. It was one mission that instilled "shock and awe" on anyone within 10 miles of the drop box - quite frequently permanent "shock and awe". ARCLIGHT Quetta, the Pakistan side of the Durand line, and downtown Peshawar, where Osama lives. Run a 30-ship strike through the heart of Karachi, and another one through Rawalpindi. Then divide what's left of the country between India and Afghanistan, along the Indus river. Let Pakistan become a distant and sour memory in the minds of the muzzie crapheads throughout the world. The only way to win in a religious war is to thoroughly crush your enemies. While it might not be a religious war on our side, it damned well is on the other side. We need to remember that.

An alleged Al Qaida number two in Yemen may be freed in December, despite his original jail term being confirmed yesterday by a Yemen court of appeal. Chaired by Judge Saeed Al Qata'a, the appeal section of the State Security Court upheld the 37-month sentence, which was issued on May 3 against Mohammad Hamdi Al Ahdal. He was accused of raising funds for Al Qaida in Yemen. Al Ahdal now has about two months in prison. The verdict stipulated three years and one month in jail from the date of the arrest. Al Ahdal was arrested in November 2003 in Sanaa.
For Ghaleb Al Zaydi, who was accused of sheltering Al Ahdal in his house in Marib, eastern Yemen, the court said the period he spent in prison was enough punishment.
When the trial started earlier this year, the prosecutor accused Al Ahdal, also known as Abu Asem Al Makki, of forming an armed gang, financing Al Qaida militants and being involved in the deaths of 18 Yemeni soldiers. While denying the other charges, the 35-year-old Al Ahdal confessed to raising money for Al Qaida. The other charges, he said, he was forced to confess while in solitary confinement for seven months.
He confessed to raising money for families of what he called "mujahideen" or jihadis. "I collected 1.06 million Saudi riyals (about Dh1.04 million) from Saudi businessmen during four years, and I have given all of it to women and children of those martyrs who were killed in the 1994 civil war of Yemen, the wars in Afghanistan, Chechnya and Herzegovina, and also to families of Yemenis detained in Guantanamo and political prisoners in Yemen," he had said. The prosecutor had told the court Al Ahdal had received around $50,000 (about Dh183,700) from Osama Bin Laden to buy arms and explosives.

MOSCOW (AP) - The former head of one of Chechnya's shadowy security forces was fatally shot in Moscow on Saturday by law enforcement officers who were trying to detain him on suspicion of abductions and killings in the violence-plagued southern region, officials said.
Movladi Baisarov was shot when he resisted officers seeking to detain him on a main avenue in the capital, said Svetlana Petrenko, spokeswoman for the Moscow prosecutor's office. A prosecutor at the scene, Irina Bobinova, said he pulled a grenade when police tried to arrest him after he got out of a car.

Baisarov headed a force that provided security for Chechnya's first pro-Moscow president, Akhmad Kadyrov, who was assassinated in 2004, but had been on increasingly bad terms with Kadyrov's son Ramzan, the region's powerful prime minister. Baisarov's force had reportedly worked before for the separatist Chechen leadership in the late 1990s.
Baisarov's history reflects the volatile web of shifting allegiances and rivalries that contribute to persistent violence and tension in Chechnya, the site of two wars in the past 12 years pitting separatist rebels against Russian forces and their Chechen allies.
According to the weekly newspaper Moskovskiye Novosti, Baisarov's force in recent years was under the control of the Federal Security Service, which is the main successor of the KGB and was formerly headed by President Vladimir Putin. However, the newspaper said, the unit the force was attached to was dissolved early this year, and in October police and prosecutors said they were seeking to detain Baisarov on suspicion of involvement in the killing of 10 people.
Baisarov had denied responsibility for the killings, blaming Kadyrov for his troubles with authorities and contradicting Kadyrov's claims to be bringing order to Chechnya, Ekho Moskvy reported.

Homemade bombs exploded on Saturday in two oil wells in Chechnya and a third device was found in another well in what authorities said they suspected was an attack by rebels in the violence-plagued southern Russian region. Nobody was hurt in the blasts or the fire that raged in one of the wells after the explosions, the interior ministry branch in Chechnya said. The ministry said investigators believe the bombs were placed in the wells near the regional capital, Grozny, by a group of three or four people. After blasts at two wells, authorities found a bomb at a third well and defused it, the ministry said.
Major fighting has died down in Chechnya since the second of two separatist wars in the past 12 years began in 1999, but the mostly Muslim region is plagued by rebel attacks as well as violence blamed on Russian federal troops and forces of the Moscow-backed Chechen government. Chechen leaders say the federal government is not giving the region a fair share of proceeds from the sale of the oil it produces.

convicted al-Qaeda bomb-maker serving a jail sentence in Northern Ireland carried out dummy runs for a potential terrorist plot at Dublin and Knock airports, The Observer can reveal.
Last Tuesday the expelled Islamist cleric Omar Bakri Mohammed was seen exhorting young British Muslims in an online broadcast from Beirut to target Dublin because he incorrectly believed US troops used the airport as a transit centre on the way to Iraq and Afghanistan. Now it has emerged that key al-Qaeda bomb-making expert Abbas Boutrab visited both Dublin and Knock airports. Information on the airports was found at his north Belfast flat three years ago, according to evidence at his trial in Belfast Crown Court last November.
Boutrab lived in the Irish Republic for four years after successfully applying for political asylum using a fake identity. He left Lucan, Dublin, in 2002 after becoming the main suspect in a knife attack on an asylum seeker and moved to Belfast, where he lived under another false ID.
He was arrested after a joint MI5-PSNI operation in 2003 and information on his PC showed he had advanced a method of adapting ordinary electronic devices - including a cassette recorder - to detonate explosives in an aircraft.
Boutrab was convicted of possessing information on bomb-making and sentenced to six years' imprisonment. Evidence given at his trial stated that he was part of the al-Qaeda plot to smuggle the bomb on to an aircraft and detonate the device as it circled over a major American city.
While Boutrab lived in Lucan, under the alias 'Yocef Djafari', he attracted no suspicion. Papers discovered in Belfast showed that he entered the Republic unchallenged and successfully applied for asylum status in 2001.
It was also discovered that he stole a passport in Dublin airport in September 2001 from an Italian tourist named Fabio Parenti, and had used this in Northern Ireland.
The origins of Boutrab have yet to be established, though it was discovered that his first trace in Europe was in 1992 when fingerprints matching his were found in Holland belonging to a man travelling under the alias Maured Benali. When he was arrested in Belfast three years ago he was found to have nine separate sets of identity papers.
Al-Qaeda's presence in Ireland became apparent last August when the Garda seized a DVD with lectures on how to construct detonators and bombs while it was on its way to Britain. One senior officer in the Garda Siochana described the content of the training DVD as 'brilliant and terrifying'.
(KUNA) -- Two members of Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) were killed Saturday and one Turkish soldier was injured during clashes in southeast of the country. NTV, a local news station in Turkey, said in its website that the clashes occurred in Polomor town an area in Tunceli province southeast Turkey. The number of PKK casualties went up by eight since the military, which lost one solider, launched its offensive three days ago. Since the clashes between the PKK and the Turkish government started in the 1980s, up to 37,000 people, most of them Kurds, died in their efforts to establish a state in southeast area of Turkey.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (CNN) -- About 500 people were evacuated from the New Mexico State Fairgrounds Expo as a precaution Saturday evening after low levels of radiation were detected, police said.
A Geiger counter registered the presence of radiation after two objects were discovered at the 236-acre fairgrounds in the heart of Albuquerque, said Lt. Juan Martinez, a spokesman for New Mexico state police.
The objects, one appearing to be a pipe bomb and another that appeared to be a paint can, were found under a car parked near the fairground's fine arts building, Martinez said. One object was marked "nuclear" and the other, "cobalt," he said.
Police believe the radiation was coming from Cobalt 57, a material used in the medical and plumbing industries. Cobalt-57 is a radioactive poison used in biological research. A bomb squad unit and hazardous materials teams were searching the area for any additional devices.

The Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested two Village Defence Committee (VDC) members, who had allegedly connived with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants and also helped them snatch weapons of other VDC members in Doda. Police said the arrested VDC members, who have been identified as Ghulam Mohammad son of Lassa Batt and Ghulam Hussain son of Ahmedu, residents of Tander, Garethar, connived with LeT-men, and surrendered their rifles and ammunition.
Sources said investigations into the snatching of four rifles of VDC members by the militants revealed that two militants of LeT outfit, whose identity has not been established so far, approached VDC members Mohammad and Hussain at Tander on October 13 and asked them to hand over their weapons and ammunition, given to them in their capacity as VDC members.

The question bothering investigators working on Fridays suicide attack in Peshawar is why the bomber had his original identity card, Rs 700 and a telephone diary in his pocket at the time of the attack. Why would a suicide bomber need these things when he is out to hit his target? is the question that investigators are trying to answer.

For now, they have apparently narrowed down their investigation to an Afghan prayer leader of the mosque where the bomber, Nadeem, spent the night before the attack. Imam Maullah Jan and one of his three sons are still in police custody, whereas the two brothers and father of the bomber, who were arrested soon after the blast along with Jan, were released on Friday. The mosque has been sealed, and Jans family has shifted to an unknown location. All their things are still in the house, but they locked it and took the women and children to an undisclosed location, said Sahibzada, the owner of the house.
Ali Shah, one of Nadeems brothers, told Daily Times his father, brother and he were interrogated by security agencies for some time and then we were released because we did not have much to tell about the incident. Ali claimed Nadeem had spent four months with a tablighi group, but investigators said that Ali had not been able to answer certain questions, which suggested that Nadeem went somewhere else, most probably a training camp.
That's assuming there's a difference between a tablighi group and a training camp.
It was the last thing I expected of my son, said Nadeems father Sarzameen, adding that Nadeem had been receiving telephone calls about which he did not tell anybody anything. Intelligence agencies have been looking for clues in the Pishtakhara area to find out about the names and numbers listed in Nadeems diary.

He was picked up from near the office of the corps commander in the cantonment area and handed over to security agencies for interrogation, the sources said. The suspect is from Gujranwala district of Punjab province and is said to be mentally imbalanced. The suspect told interrogators he wanted to blow up Corps Headquarter, but did not say what his motive was.

IRAQI security forces have identified the area where the five Western hostages kidnapped two days ago are being held, a top police official said overnight. "We have identified the area where they are held. I can't disclose the place," Mohammed Ali al-Mussawi, chief of operations at the police headquarters of Basra, the southern Iraqi city, said.
On Thursday militiamen disguised as police officers seized the five Westerners - four US citizens and an Austrian - as they guarded a convoy of trucks from Kuwait that was stopped at a police checkpoint near Safwan, near the Kuwaiti border. Yesterday Mr Mussawi said all the five hostages are "still held captive" with none of them found dead or rescued as reported earlier.
On Friday a Basra provincial official said that two American hostages had been rescued in a police raid and that one was found dead. "Iraqi police found the body of an American where they conducted a raid in which two other Americans were freed," the official said.

GUNMEN in Baghdad killed a prominent Shi'ite Islamist politician overnight as Condoleezza Rice appealed to Iraqis not to let the sectarianism fuelling an orgy of violence destroy their country. BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi and American forces fought Sunni insurgents in an hours-long street battle Saturday in the increasingly violent city of Baqouba, as residents fled indoors under the rattle of automatic weapons fire and the blasts of rocket-propelled grenades. City police said at least 18 people were killed and 19 wounded.
The city was chaotic following the fighting, and Baqouba's police media office said it was not known how many of the dead were Sunni insurgent fighters. The Americans reported no dead or wounded among U.S. forces.
Violence in Baquoba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, has skyrocketed in recent weeks, particularly after a major battle between Sunnis and Shiites in the nearby city of Balad last month. Scores of civilians in Baqouba have been killed in the violence in the past two weeks alone.

Just thought a little perspective was in order. There has been just one major battle involving the US thus far in this war (9/11/2001). There will be more, no matter what we do. And, I suspect, they will make all my above examples look small. It is the cost of apathy.
The IDF said on Saturday night that it was suspending an airstike on the Gaza home of a Popular Resistance Committees commander after hundreds of Palestinians formed a human shield around the building. The Palestinians flocked to the home of Mohammedweil Baroud in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya after he received a warning from the IDF late Saturday giving him 30 minutes to leave the house.
Barhoud heads a cell responsible for firing Kassam rockets at Israel. The incident was the first time Palestinians have tried to prevent an airstrike. The crowd chanted anti-Israel and anti-American slogans, and people said they were prepared to give their lives to protect the home. "Yes to martyrdom, no to surrender," the crowd chanted.
"We came here to protect this fighter, to protect his house and to prove that we are capable of defeating this Zionist policy," said Nizar Rayan, a local Hamas leader who joined the protest.

How churlish of the IAF to deny all of these martyrs their wish. Next time, make their dreams come true. A few more repeats and people will be much less eager to cluster up at target locations. All Israel gets in treturn for their restraint is more Qassam rockets launched at them. What part of this equation do they not understand?

If Israel gets hit bad, there won't be anything habitable left. I have no doubt they have an automatic full release response for attacks from certain quarters - and will be instantly fed confirming satellite info. Somehow I do not believe the hand-wringers - it will not get to that point... But I'm obviously in the minority in that belief.

Vietnam K-9 units, the dogs and their handlers, were credited with saving thousands of lives in the war. There are countless stories of how the dogs prevented an ambush, discovered deadly mines or booby traps, or sounded the alarm against infiltrators. (See Famous War Dogs for some Vietnam stories.) These dogs were so effective that the VC offered bounties for killing military working dogs and their handlers.
Three to four thousand scout and sentry dogs served in Vietnam, largely German Shepherds. Sadly, at the end of the conflict, in a decision that remains painful decades later, most of the in-country dogs were euthanized. Fewer than 250 dogs were returned to the United States or other locations.
FIVE people were shot dead and one policeman was wounded in a string of drive-by shootings by suspected Islamic militants in Thailand's restive Muslim-majority south, police said. A 60-year-old Buddhist cattle raiser was gunned down while walking, before suspected insurgents burned his body and left it on the roadside in Yala, one of three violence-torn southern provinces bordering Malaysia.
A 52-year-old Buddhist street ice cream seller was also shot dead on Friday by two suspected insurgents on a motorcycle in Yala where another Muslim villager, 27, was killed late on the same day while riding a motorcycle, police said.
In neighboring Pattani province on Friday, a Buddhist security guard, 35, was shot dead while riding a motorcycle after work. Sri Lanka's Navy clashed with Tamil Tiger rebels off the island's northwest coast yesterday, each claiming to have sunk the other's vessels, while the military said a rebel ambush on land killed three soldiers. The Navy said it sank three Tiger boats near the northern Mannar peninsula, while the rebels said they sank two navy boats and killed 10 sailors in the incident. Both sides claimed their vessels were still afloat and intact, and denied fatalities on their side.
As a new chapter in Sri Lanka's two-decade civil war escalates, with more than 3,000 troops, civilians and rebels killed so far this year alone, it is often impossible to tell what has really happened in far-flung attacks, with each side contradicting the other.
Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samara-singhe said small navy inshore patrol craft engaged the Tiger vessels off the Mannar peninsula after detecting suspicious boat movements, and that helicopter gunships were called in to help. He said no navy boats were sunk. "Three LTTE boats were sunk, and four navy sailors have gunshot injuries, but their craft are intact," Samarasinghe said. Samarasinghe said three soldiers were killed in a separate incident and 15 civilians were wounded when suspected Tigers ambushed an army truck in the northern district of Vavuniya with a Claymore fragmentation mine.

Typically in that era, the paint jobs were not so much to make a ship invisible as to make it appear much longer or shorter or give a false appearance of its speed, to try to confuse sub targeting.

The United States built, manned, trained, and fielded more than 100 carriers during World War II, including almost 60 "jeep" carriers used for ASW work and support. Now we're down to a dozen in a war where we NEED carrier air groups for forward bombardment. I'd also like to see a dozen or so new-construction battleships for pounding the he$$ out of shore installations. There's nothing else like parking a volkswagen-size arty shell in someone's living room for getting his attention.

Shipman, technically we're around 20-24 if you include the LHDs and LHAs that are basically everyone elses normal fullsize carrier.

It's not so much the numbers, but the American unwillingness to fully use them. For instance, the 40 fleet + light carriers have about the same tonnage as current US fleet carriers. Though the 80 or so WWII escort carriers have twice tonnage of the 12 current LHAs+LHDs.
Battleships are good for impressing primitives. Not so good for destroying enemies armed with long range antiship missiles.

(KUNA) -- As many as five soldiers and five students were killed Saturday in a claymore mine attack and a shooting in Northern Sri Lanka, while a naval battle between Tamil rebels and Sri Lankan navy also started today off the country's Northwest coast. The claymore mine was targeting a Sri Lankan army truck in Vavuniya in Northern Sri Lanka Saturday, news agencies reported from capital Colombo. As many as three students were killed and eight injured in the blast. Soon after the mine blast there was shooting, which killed two more students and injuring other students.

Since the start of September, only 17 Katyusha rockets have been found in south Lebanon, a UNIFIL spokesman currently stationed in the region said on Saturday night. The spokesman added that UNIFIL troops were taking all necessary steps to prevent the presence of illegal weapons south of the Litani River, as was outlined in UN Resolution 1701.
