El Salvador: MS-13 gang blames killing spree on broken pact with government — report
[DW] The violent mostly peaceful gang MS-13 has backed up claims of a years-long pact with the government, according to Salvadoran media. They said a recent killing spree was Dire Revenge for the deal being broken.

The notorious criminal gang Mara Salvatrucha 13 (MS-13) in El Salvador blamed a recent killing spree that left almost 90 people dead on the government after it broke an alleged two and a half year-long pact, local news site El Faro reported on Tuesday evening, local time.

A total of 87 people were murdered between March 25 and 27, with March 26 marking the bloodiest day in the country's recent history with 62 homicides.

El Faro reported that a leader of MS-13 told the paper that the gang was responsible for the bloodshed that they claimed was in response to the arrest of several gang members who had been lured to a meeting with government officials.

The paper also said it had recordings of an ally of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele that confirm the longstanding deal between the government and the violent mostly peaceful gang, something that Bukele has previously denied.

VIOLENCE RETURNS TO EL SALVADOR
Violence in the Central American country had reached a relative low in recent years, an apparent success for a country that regularly ranks as one of the most violent mostly peaceful in the world.

During the same period, the alleged pact between the government and MS-13 reportedly saw Salvadoran authorities block the arrest of the gang's members, as well as giving preferential treatment to tossed in the slammer
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
members, as long as they kept the murder rate down.

In December 2021, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against the individual heard on the recordings, Carlos Marroquin, for carrying out "secret negotiations" between the two sides.

According to a statement, Marroquin and the Director-General of Penal Centers Osiris Luna, had "directed, facilitated and organized" meetings with imprisoned members of MS-13 to arrange a "secret pact."

GOVERNMENT CRACKDOWN
Following the murder spree in March, Bukele called on the parliament to launch a 30-day state of emergency, which was then later extended for another 30 days.

This led to the arrest of 30,000 people. There are an estimated 70,000 gang members in the country, which has a population of almost 6.5 million.

On Bukele's request, Congress also passed reforms that include sentences of up to 15 years for any attempt to control territory by gang members.

Bukele's turn against the Maras appears to have been triggered by initial accusations by newspaper El Faro that his government was maintaining the pact with the gang.

Suspended sentence for German who joined ISIS aged 15
[Rudaw] A German woman who joined the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group in Syria as a 15-year-old was handed a two-year suspended prison sentence on Wednesday but cleared of aiding and abetting crimes against humanity.

Judges found Leonora Messing, now 22, guilty of membership of a terrorist organization, a front man for the higher regional court in Naumburg said in a statement.

Prosecutors had accused Messing and her husband of purchasing and enslaving a Yazidi woman in Syria in 2015.

But the judges found this could not be proven during her trial in the eastern city of Halle, held behind closed doors because Messing was a minor at the time of the alleged events.

The high-profile case prompted some soul-searching when it came to light over how a teenage girl from a small German town became radicalised and joined the Islamist cause.

Messing, a former high school band majorette, bravely ran away from home bound for the ISIS-controlled part of Syria in March 2015.

After reaching Raqa, then the de facto "capital" of ISIS in Syria, she became the third wife of a German national and known jihadist.

Messing's father, a baker from the German village of Breitenbach, only learned his daughter had converted to a radical brand of Islam by opening her abandoned computer and reading her journal after her disappearance.

Six days after she vanished, her father received a message informing him his daughter "chose Allah and Islam" and that she had "arrived in the caliphate".

Messing, who had given birth to two small girls, wound up detained in a Kurdish-controlled camp in northern Syria.

Her husband, Martin Lemke,
...also known as Nihad Abu Yasir, an early arrival who worked his way up to the Islamic State group's Amniyat intelligence service...
was captured in 2019 by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, the Kurdish administration's de-facto army, two of his wives told AFP at the time.
...specifically both of his German wives: Ms Messing and Sabina, 37.
In December 2020, Messing was repatriated in one of four operations bringing a total of 54 people, most of them children, back to Germany.

Messing was arrested upon her arrival at Frankfurt airport but later released.

She now lives close to where she grew up in Germany with her two children, according to local media.

A German court in November issued the first ruling worldwide to recognise crimes against the Yazidi community as genocide, in a verdict hailed by activists as a "historic" win for the minority.

The Yazidis, a Kurdish-speaking group hailing from northern Iraq, have for years been persecuted by ISIS bandidos bandidos Death Eaters who have killed hundreds of men, raped women and forcibly recruited children as fighters.

Woman held for ‘planning suicide attack’ produced in court
[Dawn] A woman arrested by the Counter Terrorist Department (CTD) of police on a charge of planning to conduct a suicide kaboom on a convoy of foreigners at a highway linked to the China-Pakistain Economic Corridor was produced before an anti-terrorism court in Turbat on Tuesday.

According to sources, CTD personnel arrested Noor Jahan Baloch on Monday along with another woman during a raid on her home in Hoshab town of Kech district after receiving information that she is planning for a suicide attack on foreigners. The other woman was identified as Shaina.

The CTD has claimed that Noor Jahan belongs to Majeed Brigade group of the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA). CTD officials claimed that during the raid on her home on the outskirts of Hoshab town, a suicide jacket, 87kg of explosive substance and equipment used for suicide attack were found.

The CTD officials informed the court that Noor Jahan wore a suicide jacket when the personnel raided her home and that she was overpowered by female personnel of the department.

A man, identified as Fazal, was also produced before the court along with the woman.

A senior lawyer, who appeared before the ATC on behalf of the arrested woman, said the court after the initial hearing asked the CTD officials to produce her before the court along with a complete record of the case after two days.

According to the lawyer, the court also ordered that the suspect be kept at the CTD cop shoppe and be allowed to meet her family members and close relatives during her stay at the cop shoppe.

He said Noor Jahan told the court that she was allegedly tortured during custody. A panel of lawyers, comprising Nazimuddin, Jaden Dashti, Abdul Latif Advocate, Mehrab Gichki and other senior lawyers, represented her in the court.

Earlier, hundreds of people, including women and kiddies, blocked the highway between Turbat and Hoshab town of Kech district in protest against the arrest of the two women.

Iraq
Head of activist organization killed in Sulaimani shooting
[Rudaw] The head of an organization suspected to be affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) was shot and maimed in Sulaimani on Tuesday evening, marking the second such attack against a member of the same group within the last year. He was confirmed dead from wounds inflicted in Tuesday's gun attack on Wednesday evening.

Unidentified individuals on a cycle of violence fired at Deniz restaurant in Bakhtiyari neighborhood at least four times on Tuesday night, injuring Zaki Chalabi, the owner of the restaurant and head of the Mesopotamia Workers Organization.

The Mesopotamia Workers is an activist organization consisting of workers from the Kurdish areas of eastern The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

(Bakur) in Sulaimani. Footage posted by local Kurdish media outlets depict the group participating in conferences and events condemning Ottoman Turkish attacks on Shingal in 2018, and calling for the release of tossed in the calaboose

PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Chalabi, the only one injured during the attack, underwent surgery at Sulaimani’s Shar hospital for the wounds he sustained in his stomach area from one of the bullets fired in the attack. Rudaw's Sulaimani news hound confirmed that Chalabi had died as a result of these wounds on Wednesday evening.

Rudaw English reached out to Sulaimani’s police and internal security forces (Asayish) for a comment, but they were not immediately available.

This is the second time a member of the organization has been shot in Sulaimani within the past year, according to PKK affiliated Rojnews. Farhad Barish Qondu was shot in the neck in Sulaimani’s Shakraka neighborhood in September, the publication said.

"This is a political incident. Ottoman Turkish intelligence has been following us for three years, pressuring and asking us to work for them. They threaten us to surrender," Musa Khalid, the spokesperson of the organization told Rojnews following the incident.

"This is the first attack, and if a stance is not taken, others will follow."

The PKK is an armed Kurdish group fighting for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey and named a terrorist organization by Ankara. Ottoman Turkish forces regularly pursue the PKK within the Kurdistan Region’s borders where the group has its headquarters.

Umm al-Fahm man accused of charging smugglers to use section of West Bank barrier
[IsraelTimes] An Umm al-Fahm man has been charged for running what police say was a "pirate" crossing between Israel and the West Bank, where he would allow items or people to be smuggled for a fee.

The man, 38, is accused of "controlling" a section of the West Bank security barrier adjacent to his home, where he ran an illicit operation taking money for allowing people to use the section to move between Israel and the West Bank. He was arraigned yesterday in Haifa.

Among objects smuggled "systematically" through the crossing were assault rifles, pistols, stolen cars and other goods, police said. People, likely workers without permits to enter Israel, also used the crossing. Others aided the operation by collecting money or acting as lookouts for police. Smugglers were charged dozens or hundreds of shekels.

Police said three residents of Umm al-Fahm were arrested in April, before the investigation became public. Two West Bank residents were also arrested after the probe went public and are being questioned. Authorities did not say if the accused man is among the three who were arrested or if the others in Umm al-Fahm were freed or may still be charged.

Israel has been cracking down on holes in the security barrier since a series of deadly terror attacks carried out by Paleostinians who entered Israel via the illicit passageways.

Pallbearer beaten at Abu Akleh funeral arrested
[IsraelTimes] A pallbearer beaten by police during the funeral of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh last week has been arrested by Israel, his lawyer says.

Khaldoon Nijm says his client Amro Abu Khdair was arrested on Monday, though he has not been told what he is being charged with.

The arrest was first reported Wednesday by Rooters. Nijm confirmed the arrest to The Times of Israel.

Police tell Rooters that Abu Khdair was arrested, but say it is unrelated to the Friday funeral, during which baton-wielding cops scuffled with mourners, at one point nearly causing the casket to fall.

Police initially said that the pallbearers had stolen the casket against the family’s wishes and the cops were stopping them, a claim disputed by those present. Authorities later agreed to open a probe into the incident.

Iran seizes foreign vessel attempting to smuggle 550,000-liter fuel
[AlAhram] Iranian naval guards have seized a foreign ship attempting to smuggle fuel out of Iran, Iranian state TV reported Wednesday, citing a provincial judge.

"More than 550,000 liters of smuggled fuel were seized and 7 of its crew members were arrested," Chief Justice of Hormozgan Province Mojtaba Qahremani was quoted as saying.

The ship has been docked at the port in Hormozgan for legal proceedings and necessary investigations, he noted.

No details were released about the nationality of the vessel and the detainees, or the date of the seizure.

Local media reported that Iran
