Not All Philly Students Have Computers So School District Cancels Remote Learning
[THEGATEWAYPUNDIT] The Philadelphia School District canceled all remote learning for students while they are off from school because not all kids have access to a computer and high-speed internet.

So all online learning will be canceled.
Well, don't that sound egalitarianly reasonable.
The superintendent said, "If that’s not available to all children, we cannot make it available to some."
As is well known, Philthadelphia has no libraries, or as they're known on South Street "lah-berries."
TIME reported:

The Philadelphia School District will not offer remote instruction during the coronavirus
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
shutdown, the superintendent announced Wednesday, citing equity concerns in a city where many students lack computers or high-speed internet at home.

School districts nationwide have been wrestling with the same issues as they explore ways to keep children engaged as classrooms are shuttered for weeks or longer.

In Philadelphia, where some teachers had been offering forms of optional remote instruction on their own, Superintendent William R. Hite Jr. said at a City Hall news conference that no students will be required to log on to a computer or submit assignments.

"If that’s not available to all children, we cannot make it available to some," Hite said.

Quick solution to parents with internet access: find an online class room for your kids as it is most likely 5 times better than the class your kid is in now in Philly.

#12  Screen sharing apps are real pigs. I am not a student, but a teacher, with one class, for example, that has 100 students. Just sharing my desktop (in Dingtalk) completely maxes out my PC at home with a 100Mbs internet connection. I think screen sharing is not the best model for remote education. Old educators like it because it feels the most like a classroom, but classrooms don't really scale well. Imagine Donald Trump teaching online to 1,000,000 viewers. There might be some technical problems ...
Posted by: Beau || 03/22/2020 7:44 Comments || Top||

#13  #12 Uh, I work remote 95% of the time, collaborate with colleagues etc. We share screens, pass files around hold audio conferences. The application you ask? Microsoft Teams. My connection bandwidth, 15 Mbps. It sounds like you should look for another application. Try Zoom Video.

#26  Chaving: are you still getting that kind of response? Some colleagues said Team crashed under the load last week. I presume MS'll scale up the infrastructure to handle it. Zoom was giving grief for me on Thursday, and Slack was, with our small team meeting, pretty close to the limit.

#27  This is easy.

Give all the kids electronic notepads. Which will be then sold to someone on "the street." Kids get some $, street buyers get to turn a little profit as well.

Sneaker sales go up as do Nike profits. And business value.

China all good again.

Pilots out there: If you are asked do something as a courtesy (not a declared emergency or anything that may be a violation of 61, 91, 135 or the AIM, as appropriate) to aircraft tail number November One Kilo Echo, tell them to eff off. You'll be glad you did.

#3  I think they're holding out for Thursday. That's when the new unemployment claims number comes out. It will be horrific, and they want to squeeze it for every vote they imagine they can get.

It's interesting how little the Dem candidates have to say. Bernie wants to prevent the pharma companies from making huge profits off the cure they haven't invented yet, Lizzie (who's out, of course) wants to create a giant federal bureaucracy to respond to the emergency, and Joe thinks his campaign for the Senate is going pretty well.

#6  Thanks chris and lex, but DV's point is key. The media is desperately trying to spin this against Trump, but this is the kind of problem Trump was made to solve. The Dems want to solve the problem in a way consistent with their own weird little ideologies, which nobody with his back to the wall gives a rat's tail about. Trump has no ideology, and is therefore free to use every trick there is to solve the problem. Right now he's looking like Ed Harris in Apollo 13.

#10  Senate Democrats Block Coronavirus Stimulus After COVID-Linked GOP Absentees

It's almost as if the Progs want to crush the economy in an election year.

Leveraged by the perceived lethality of a "novel" Coronovirus (Jeez. I can actually spell it now. What the hell has happened to me in the past week?).

And I'd love to hear the story about why the hell the 5 absent Senators were not allowed to vote. Someone needs to do an Executive Order thingie (as allowed by law.) and get their voices heard. Except for Romney.
Posted by: Anomalous Sources || 03/22/2020 22:09 Comments || Top||

#11  Yes, it's becoming obvious that, unlike the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, with Trump in the White House the opposition party is perfectly happy to
kill the economy,
cause mass unemployment,
plunge hundreds of thousands, even millions, of small businesses into bankruptcy,
destroy the savings of tens of millions of households,
and ruin the hopes of another generation of Americans --

... all of this in order to bring down the president they hate.

This thing is unlikely to be significantly worse than the pandemic that occurred when Obama was in the White House.

This absurd overreaction is a combination of hysterically conformist behavior and insane, cynical political calculation.

‘Blood on their hands:' Teachers say de Blasio and Carranza helped spread coronavirus
h/t Instapundit
[NYP] - One after another, sick Brooklyn Technical High School teachers called union chapter leader Nate Bonheimer last week, to tell him they’d tested positive for COVID-19.

By Friday, five of them had shared the devastating news. But after being notified about each one, the city Department of Education still ordered the 6,000-student school’s 350 staffers to show up for work last week, saying the building had been cleaned.

... The city failed to follow a March 9 directive by the state Education Department that "requires an initial 24-hour closure, in order to begin an investigation to determine the contacts that the individual may have had within the school environment."

DOE did not attempt to identify close contacts, Bonheimer said. "They did not alert the people who needed to know the most to protect themselves, their families and everyone else they came into contact with."

...Around the city, teachers and administrators are outraged that Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza resisted a drum beat to close the public schools in the name of safety.

Some renamed the coronavirus "Carranzavirus."
