"Hero" Mom Charged With Falsely Accusing a Man of Trying to Kidnap Her 5-Year-Old at the Mall
[Reason] - I think we had this earlier in the week
She's the Jussie Smollett of the mommy world: Santana Adams of Milton, West Virginia, has been charged with falsely accusing a man of trying to kidnap her 5-year-old daughter at the mall.

On April 1, Adams told the police that a stranger at the Old Navy store in Barboursville "grabbed the child by the hair and attempted to pull her away." The girl then "dropped to the floor with the male still pulling her." As WSAZ reported:

The woman told police she pulled out a gun and the man quickly left the scene.

The mom told mall security what happened. A short time later they along with the Barboursville Police Department spotted the suspect walking near the food court where he was taken into custody.

Hero mom thwarts predator with gun: That's what appeared to be the case when the accused man, Mohamed Fathy Hussein Zayan, was thrown in jail. Zayan is an Egyptian here on a work visa.

But the case against him quickly began to unravel.

First, the mom told investigators that on second thought, maybe the whole thing was a "cultural misunderstanding." Maybe the guy had just been trying to pat her daughter's head.

By Tuesday, Zayan was released from the Western Regional Jail, weeping openly as he was greeted by his co-workers.

By Thursday night he was a free man, after the prosecutor dismissed all charges. Hammers had reviewed the evidence, including surveillance video of the two shoppers calmly leaving the store at slightly different times, going in opposite directions. When Zayan had been arrested later that evening at the mall's food court he'd been completely stunned and confused. He'd actually been at Old Navy to shop for his own daughter. His public defender, Michelle Protzman, vowed to make sure the case is expunged.

By Friday afternoon the tables had completely turned and Adams found herself facing charges for accusing Zayan of a crime that did not happen. Possible penatlies are a $500 fine and sixth months in jail.

Perhaps you're wondering why someone would make up such a preposterous story. I have an idea.

South Africa: Poacher killed by elephant then eaten by lions
[BBC] A suspected rhino poacher has been trampled on by an elephant then eaten by a pride of lions in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Accomplice poachers told the victim's family that he had been killed by an elephant on Tuesday. Relatives notified the park ranger.

A search party struggled to find the body but eventually found a human skull and a pair of trousers on Thursday.
"Headless body found in topless bar"
The managing executive of the park extended his condolences to the family.

"Entering Kruger National Park illegally and on foot is not wise," he said. "It holds many dangers and this incident is evidence of that."

Kruger National Park has an ongoing problem with poaching and there remains a strong demand for rhino horn in Asian countries.

On Saturday, Hong Kong airport authorities seized the biggest haul of rhino horn in five years, valued at $2.1m (£1.6m).

Ohio man loses 34 pounds in one month by drinking only BEER during Lent
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Del Hall, who works at the Fifty West Brewing Company in Cincinnati, Ohio committed to consuming only beer for the entire 46 days of Lent

  • He's down 33.5 pounds so far, and will keep up his ale-only diet through Easter

  • Hall started his journey on Ash Wednesday, on March 6, and he said he will not eat solid food again until Easter, which falls on April 21

  • He said he's chosen this fast in the spirit of monks who observed the sacred season by drinking only bock beer in the 1600s
Mr. Wife speaks highly of the beer produced by Fifty West.

Venezuelans rally to demand power, water and end to Maduro
[REUTERS] After weeks of power cuts and limited access to water, tens of thousands of Venezuelans erupted into the streets on Saturday to back opposition leader Juan Guaido and protest against President Nicolas Maduro
Venezuela's attempt at producing a Muammar Qadaffy...
, who they accuse of wrecking the economy.

Venezuelans, already suffering from hyperinflation and widespread shortages of food and medicine, say the crisis has worsened over the past month. That is when crippling nationwide power outages began to leave vast swaths of territory in the dark for days at a time, cutting off water supplies and cell phone service.

Guaido, head of the opposition-controlled National Assembly and recognized as Venezuela’s legitimate head of state by most Western nations, had called for rallies on Saturday to mark the start of what he has billed as a new wave of "definitive" protests to oust Maduro.

Guaido invoked the constitution to assume an interim presidency in January, denouncing Maduro as a "usurper" for beginning a second term after a 2018 election widely considered fraudulent. Maduro, who retains the support of the military and allies including Russia and China, has derided Guaido as a U.S. puppet and said he will face justice.

In Caracas, thousands of opposition supporters assembled at a main rally point in the eastern El Marques district. Protesters said their homes had been without water for days and many had taken to drawing it from unsanitary pipes or streams running off the Avila mountain overlooking Caracas.

"We have to get rid of this usurper, and we can’t think about anything else," said Claudia Rueda, a 53-year-old homemaker at the protest.

At one point, the crowd chanted, "The water has gone, power has gone, and now Maduro what’s missing is that you go too."

Two massive power outages in recent weeks led Maduro’s government to cancel school classes and left many businesses shuttered. The resumption of services has been uneven, with cities such as San Cristobal, Valencia and Maracay still reporting intermittent blackouts.

China-Japan-Koreas
Feds warn: China sending ‘thousands' of spies to US colleges
[Washington Examiner] Chinese intelligence services have sent "thousands" of people to U.S. colleges under the guise of college students and professors, federal officials said.

"We want to encourage people to come here and study," Andrew Lelling, the U.S. attorney for Massachusetts, told reporters Friday. "This isn’t about targeting everyone who’s a Chinese national. But there are thousands who are directly linked to a state-sponsored effort to steal intellectual property."

That warning underscores the scope of China’s "economic espionage," as the Justice Department terms it, as a tool for national security and economic threat. That threat is part of a broader effort by Beijing to take advantage of American colleges and universities, which provoked a backlash among U.S. officials.

French yellow vest protesters hit streets for 21st weekend
Clearly not a final report on numbers or level of violence and arrests on Saturday, but this is all I could find.
[AlAhram] Protesters from the yellow vest movement are taking to the streets of La Belle France for a 21st straight weekend, with hundreds gathered for a march across Gay Paree, one of numerous protests around the country.

Gay Paree police have fine-tuned their strategy of being more mobile and proactive to counter eventual violence since the first Saturday of protests Nov. 17. The Champs-Elysees avenue is off-limits to protesters after it was hit by rioting last month.

Hundreds gathered in Rouen, in Normandy, a past flashpoint, and hundreds more in eastern Gay Paree at the Place de la Republique, the start of a march to the business district on the capital's western edge.

Man jailed for life in attempted rape and murder case
[DAWN] A sessions judge on Friday awarded life imprisonment to a convict for killing his co-worker after a botched rape attempt.

M. Sabir was found guilty of abducting the woman and strangling her to death for resisting a sexual assault within the remit of the Gizri cop shoppe in 2009.

On Friday, the additional district and sessions judge of the model criminal trial court (South) pronounced his judgement reserved earlier after recording evidence and final arguments from both sides.

Judge Kamran Atta Soomro wrote that the prosecution had successfully established the charges against the detained accused without any reasonable shadow of a doubt.

Civilian on Fly-Along Accidentally Ejected from Fighter Jet
Hat tip Dr. Steve.
[FoxtrotAlpha] A civilian was reportedly injured late last month after his ride-along with the French Air Force took an unexpected turn. The man’s ejection seat somehow fired, sending him soaring into the sky. The French temporarily grounded their fleet of Rafale fighter jets pending an investigation.

Exactly why his ejection seat went off is a mystery.

The incident, according to Aerotime News, took place at Saint-Dizier air base in northern La Belle France. Saint-Dizier is a hub for Rafale-B fighters, the twin seat version of La Belle France’s Rafale fighter jet. Twin seat fighters in many air forces are used to take civilians on "observation flights," including government officials, members of the media, and celebrities.

(While the American F-35 has many problems, accidentally ejecting civilians won’t be one of them‐the Joint Strike Fighter is a single seat jet.)

The unknown civilian, identified in the press as a 64 year old man, was riding in a twin-seat Dassault Rafale-B fighter jet. As the jet was taking off the man’s ejection seat sequence was somehow triggered, sending him through the canopy. The pilot, whose hands were suffered minor cuts from the broken canopy, managed to land the aircraft safely.

The civilian on the other hand apparently parachuted to the runway below, injuring his back in the process. He was taken to a hospital for his injuries, where a spokesperson for the French Air Force said his health "is not a cause for concern." The Rafale grounding was lifted a few days later.

This isn’t video from our poor French friend being ejected, but it is a video of what someone being ejected should look like:

It’s unclear exactly what happened, and the French issued a partial grounding for the Rafale out of caution. Most, if not all, fighters have a very deliberate process air crew have to go through to trigger an ejection. Typically the ejection seat trigger is between a pilot’s legs or above his or her head, and a quick pull will send the crew member rocketing out of dying aircraft. The Rafale-B uses the Martin Baker Mk. 16F ejection seat, and according to Martin Baker it has saved four lives.

In this case however the Rafale-B was operating perfectly normally. One possibility was that there was a problem with the ejection seat that caused it to go off. Another possibility is that the civilian triggered the ejection accidentally, perhaps holding onto exactly the wrong part of the aircraft while experiencing the thrill of takeoff. Or maybe he did it on purpose, thinking this was his one shot in life to shoot himself out of an airplane and he was going to take it.

If so, Foxtrot Alpha applauds him.
