DNA of headless torso found at sea matches missing Swedish journalist: Danish police
[DAWN] Danish police said on Wednesday that a DNA test from a headless torso found in the Baltic Sea matches with missing Swedish journalist Kim Wall, who is believed to have died on an amateur-built submarine that sank.

Wall, 30, was last seen alive on August 10 on Danish inventor Peter Madsen's submarine, which sank off Denmark's eastern coast the day after.

Madsen, who was placed in durance vile
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
on preliminary manslaughter charges, denies having anything to do with Wall's disappearance.

He initially told police that she disembarked from the submarine to a Copenhagen island several hours into their trip and that he did not know what happened to her afterward, but later told authorities "an accident occurred onboard that led to her death" and he "buried" her at sea.

The headless torso was found by a member of the public on August 21 near where she was believed to have died.

Copenhagen police said on August 22 that the arms and legs had been "deliberately been cut off" the body.

In a brief statement on Wednesday, police said tests found the torso matched with Wall, and a news conference was scheduled for later in the day.

Wall, a Sweden-born freelance journalist, studied at the Sorbonne University in Gay Paree, the London School of Economics and at Columbia University in New York, where she graduated with a master's degree in journalism in 2013.

#1  Head, arms and legs cut off and dropped to the bottom of the sea. The perp' forgot that gasses caused by decomposition within the torso allow it to float a bit.

I suspect he did more than "bury" her at sea.

Clooneys donate $1mn to combat hate groups after Charlottesville
[IMAGES.DAWN] In the wake of deadly violence following a white supremacist rally, George and Amal Clooney have donated $1 million to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights advocacy organization that monitors hate groups.

The pair, which made the donation via their Clooney Foundation for Justice, join a number of others giving funds in recent weeks to anti-discrimination organizations, which have seen a surge in donations since festivities between white supremacists and anti-racism protesters amid a demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia left one dead.

"What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate," the Clooneys said in a statement announcing the grant.

Connecticut man dies from tick-borne illness
[FOX5NY] Officials say a 55-year-old Connecticut man died after contracting a tick-borne illness.

The state medical examiner's office says Michael Yoder, of New Milford, died Aug. 8 of liver and kidney failure after contracting Babesiosis from a tick bite.

Yoder's wife, Wendy, tells The News-Times her husband had a stomach bug for weeks, but by the time he was diagnosed it was too late.

Babesiosis is a disease caused by a parasite that gives people flu-like symptoms. In severe cases, the disease can cause anemia that leads to organ failure.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported an increase in Babesiosis cases in the state, from 74 in 2011 to 205 in 2014. Still, fatal cases remain low with one death reported in 2015 and in 2016.

The CDC says that Babesiosis is caused by microscopic parasites that infect red blood cells and are spread by certain ticks. In the United States, tickborne transmission is most common in particular regions and seasons: it mainly occurs in parts of the Northeast and upper Midwest and usually peaks during the warm months.

Modern life is making Americans constipated
  • [Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] At least 16% of Americans - including a third of people over 60 - experience chronic constipationThe number of people admitted to hospitals has more than doubled since 1997

  • It can have major complications including anal fissures and hemorrhoids when not treated

  • The huge uptick can be linked to the high-fat Western diet and lack of fiber

  • It can also be linked to Americans' sedentary lifestyles and lack of exercise

That's what's wrong with the gorillas, too.

Rebels say Ukrainians use press gangs
[Novorosinform] Ukrainian press gangs are roaming the streets of a town in northern Lugansk, gathering draft age men to be inducted into the Ukrainian military, according to Russian language news accounts.

Colonel Andrei Marochko, who is a spokesman for the rebel-led Lugansk ministry of defense, said in prepared remarks that in Stanitsa Luganskaya draft age men were being taken from work and pubs to the local hospitals for draft physicals.

Afterwards, the men are warned to go home to await induction notices.

The Russian backed rebel forces in Lugansk and Donetsk have had their share of problems in recruiting for their forces. During the first two years, rebels had their choice of volunteers, especially from abroad and not just from Russia.

But bloody fighting in Debaltsevo two years ago, and news reports of how foreigners were being deployed put a damper on recruiting. Also, foreign ministries have placed blocks on travel to the Donbas region, adding to the problems of recruiting.

Similarly, the Ukrainians have had a difficult time getting draft age men to show up after they are issued draft notices. Very few professional Ukrainian military want a fight with the Russians, so very few recruits want one as well.

The Ukrainians do not release figures on failures to appear for military service, but rebel media has speculated that the problem is widespread.

In his remarks Col. Marochko charged the Ukrainians are likely to use the new draftees as covering forces, the first to be fired on and to die.

New recruits in Donetsk and Lugansk have been treated that way in the past as well.

Government Clears Amazon's $13 Billion Purchase Of Whole Foods
[Daily Caller] The government has cleared the way for Amazon to purchase Whole Foods, Inc., in a deal worth as much as $13.7 billion.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said in a Wednesday statement that the deal would not violate antitrust laws or result in creation of an anticompetitive market.

"Based on our investigation we have decided not to pursue this matter further," Bruce Hoffman, the Acting Director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Competition, said in the statement. "Of course, the FTC always has the ability to investigate anticompetitive conduct should such action be warranted."

The board of directors for organic food seller Whole Foods approved the sale earlier Wednesday, CNBC reports.

The deal means that Amazon, owned by Jeff Bezos, will enter the traditional retail food market, in addition to controlling a large percentage of online sales.

#1  ...or result in creation of an anticompetitive market

Really, you guys been locked in the Beltway for a long time haven't you? For good or bad, Amazon has been leveraging itself hammering others in the market and you haven't got a clue. What China has done to American jobs and manufacturing, Amazon has been doing to distribution and marketing and you use the word anticompetitive? You may understand the 'legalistic' term, but not the intent.

2) She didn't bring it up herself. When asked, she replied "not automatically".

Which is, like it or not, a fair answer. A North Korean attack on Guam (U.S. territory) could justify invoking Article 5 of NATO, a preemptive U.S. attack on North Korea would not.

I don't think you'll find one country in the world which would say: If you attack North Korea we'll join automatically.

Could be a REASON for that:

On 31 October 1953, the last South African Force left Korea.

The Squadron received the United States Presidential Citation, the Korean Presidential Citation and the USAF Unit Citation. Individual medals were 2 Silver Stars, 50 Distinguished Flying Cross (DFCs), 1 cluster to the DFC, 40 Bronze Medals, 176 Air Medals, 152 clusters to the Air Medal and 1 Soldier Medal.

BHC rejects MPA Achakzai's bail application in traffic policeman death case
[DAWN] The Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
High Court (BHC) on Wednesday rejected the bail application of Public Accounts Committee Chairman Majeed Khan Achakzai in a case pertaining to the death of a traffic policeman who was allegedly run over by the politician's car.

A traffic sergeant, Haji Attaullah, was run over and killed near Quetta's GPO Chowk in June when a vehicle allegedly belonging to the politician ran him over.

The incident had come to light shortly after footage of the politician's vehicle ramming into the traffic officer began circulating on social media.

The politician was taken into police custody after a campaign on social media mounted pressure on the government to arrest him.

Earlier, when Achakzai was remanded into policy custody, he confessed to his involvement in the accident and claimed to have agreed to compensate the family members of the slain traffic policeman, police said.

A Thorium-Salt Reactor Has Fired Up for the First Time in Four Decades
h/t instapundit
The road to cleaner, meltdown-proof nuclear power has taken a big step forward. Researchers at NRG, a Dutch nuclear materials firm, have begun the first tests of nuclear fission using thorium salts since experiments ended at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the early 1970s.

Thorium has several advantages over uranium, the fuel that powers most nuclear reactors in service today. First, it's much harder to weaponize. Second, as we pointed out last year in a long read on thorium-salt reactors, designs that call for using it in a liquid form are, essentially, self-regulating and fail-safe.

The team at NRG is testing several reactor designs on a small scale at first. The first experiment is on a setup called a molten-salt fast reactor, which burns thorium salt and in theory should also be able to consume spent nuclear fuel from typical uranium fission reactions.

The tests come amid renewed global interest in thorium. While updated models of uranium-fueled power plants are struggling mightily to get off the ground in the U.S., several startup companies are exploring molten-salt reactors. China, meanwhile, is charging ahead with big plans for its nuclear industry, including a heavy bet on thorium-based reactors. The country plans to have the first such power plants hooked up to the grid inside 15 years. If they pull it off, it might just help usher in a safer future for nuclear power.

James Damore hires civil rights lawyer Harmeet Dhillon

The engineer who was fired by Google after he criticized the company’s diversity policies for ignoring differences between the sexes hired civil rights lawyer Harmeet Dhillon, who was widely reported months ago to be a contender for a top job in the U.S. Justice Department.

Dhillon confirmed Wednesday that she’s representing James Damore, who has said he plans to sue his ex-employer over his firing. He set off a firestorm this month with a 10-page memo blasting Google’s "left bias" for creating a "politically correct monoculture."

"We are also engaging with several other Google employees or former employees who have suffered adverse employment actions at Google," Dhillon said in a statement. "We are exploring all potential legal avenues for these clients, and gathering facts about working conditions at Google, particularly for those whose views are inconsistent with Google’s political orthodoxy."

Virtue Signaling Update: Comey Joins Howard Univ as Part-Time Lecturer and ‘King Chair'
[Free Beacon] Former FBI Director James Comey will deliver a keynote address at Howard University in September, and will join the faculty in a part-time role this fall.

Comey, who was fired as President Donald Trump's FBI director in May, will speak at the opening convocation ceremony next month. The annual event is designed to welcome students to the historically black university, Politico reported Wednesday.

The newly appointed 2017-2018 Gwendolyn S. and Colbert I. King Endowed Chair in Public Policy will also deliver a series of five lectures related to public policy, the university announced in a press release.

"I am pleased to welcome Mr. Comey to Howard," Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick wrote. "His expertise and understanding of the challenges we continue to face today will go a long way in sparking rich discussion and advancing meaningful debates across campus."

The King Chair was "established to provide students access to experienced, senior public service executives who developed and advanced public policy initiatives," according to the press release.
