Pakistani jailed 18 years to life for wife's NY murder
[DAWN] A US judge sentenced an elderly Pak-American to 18 years to life in prison Wednesday for murdering his wife in New York after she refused to cook him a goat supper.

Noor Hussain, 75, was convicted of second degree murder for killing Nazar in April 2011 as she lay in bed in their Brooklyn apartment after subjecting her to years of abuse.

Frail and with medical problems, Wednesday's sentencing from Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Matthew D'Emic means that Hussain will likely die behind bars, though he will be eligible for parole after 18 years.

District attorney Kenneth Thompson welcomed the tough penalty.

"This defendant viciously attacked his wife as she lay in bed, unable to defend herself," he said. "Now the defendant has been held accountable for this brutal and cowardly act. "Thompson said Hussain "viciously" beat 66-year-old Nazar, his third wife, to death. The medical examiner's office said she had been battered more than 20 times.

She died of a fatal brain hemorrhage.

Hussain admitted only to striking her with a wooden stick after she made lentils rather than the goat dinner he wanted.

He maintained she "disrespected" him by swearing and believed he was entitled to "discipline" his wife of 21 years.

The harrowing trial saw photographs of Nazar's swollen, bruised face, and of her body lying on a blood-stained bed next to a blood-soaked bedroom wall in the couple's modest apartment.

Neighbor Safida Khan told the court she heard the Hussains argue for years, and that she twice intervened.

She testified hearing Nazar "crying and yelling" and her husband "cursing and shouting" on the day she died.

Relatives said Hussain moved to the United States more than 30 years ago in search of a better life and worked at a gas station.

#1  US Manpower 145M? They must be counting male population 18+. The same concept of throwing in coastal defense small boats in with the overall count of warships. One big false picture created by bean counters. Training, leadership, maintenance, projection, et al. It becomes a little more difficult and subjective when you stop counting noses and tubes. BTW, the American defense budget includes retired pay and retired medical which other countries transfer on their bookkeeping to other agencies.

Hackers Disrupt Tunisia Voter Registration
Meanwhile, back in the land of normality...
[AnNahar] Hackers briefly disrupted the online voter registration process for Tunisia's parliamentary and presidential polls later this year, the electoral commission said on Thursday.

The commission announced on its Facebook page that registration on the Internet or by SMS was temporarily suspended following "an aggressive attack from a group of electronic hackers seeking to prevent citizens from registering."

The body charged with organizing the vote, known by its acronym Isie, said the whole team was working on the problem "to allow registration to resume in the shortest possible time."

It later said the online registration process had resumed, while warning that "the hacking attacks are still going on."

Voters enrolling at designated offices were not affected.

The registration process, which began on June 23 and is due to finish on July 22, has so far seen just over 100,000 people added to the electoral list.

About eight million Tunisians are eligible to vote in the upcoming polls, but only half that number registered in 2011 for the first election after the revolution that toppled a decades-old dictatorship and sparked similar uprisings across the region.

To encourage participation this time, Isie made it possible to register on the Internet or by SMS, as well as at by turning up at designated offices.

After months of political wrangling, Tunisia's parliament last month approved October 26 as the date for the legislative election and November 23 for a first round of the presidential poll.

Nicaragua approves route for $40 billion canal linking oceans

A Nicaraguan committee approved a proposed route on Monday for a $40 billion shipping channel across the Central American country that would compete with the Panama Canal.

The committee of government officials, businessmen and academics approved a 172 mile (278 km) route from the mouth of the Brito river on the Pacific side to the Punto Gorda river on the Caribbean that was proposed by executives from the HK Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Co Ltd (HKND Group).

The Hong Kong-based HKND group, which is leading the project, is headed by Chinese lawyer Wang Jing, who also heads Chinese company Xinwei Telecom Enterprise Group.

The proposed canal would pass through Lake Nicaragua, Central AmericaÂ’s largest lake, and will be between 230 meters and 520 meters (755 feet to 1,706 feet) wide and 27.6 meters (90 feet) deep, said HKND engineer Dong Yunsong.

#2  That the Chinese would get in on this project, is them tacitly saying that they consider the West Coast no longer a preferable shipping target. They're expecting California et al to begin jacking up port fees, loading fees, and shipping hold charges to try and balance their budgets, because the vast bulk of the product moves to another location for use.

Mexican Judge Sends Marine Sgt. Tahmooressi Back To Prison
[FoxNews] A Mexican federal judge sent Andrew Tahmooressi back to prison after the U.S. Marine sergeant made his first official courtroom appearance since being locked up more than three months ago for accidentally crossing the border with guns in his pickup truck.

The 26-year-old veteran of two tours in Afghanistan was finally able to tell his story to a judge, after his case had been delayed by both Mexico's unpredictable legal system and his own trouble settling on a lawyer. It was not immediately clear what Tahmooressi said at the evidentiary hearing, which was closed to the public. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for August 4.

Despite the judge's ruling, Tahmooressi's attorney, Fernando Benitez, told news hounds that he was confident that the Marine's case was on the right track. Benitez said that his client's statement to the judge was "sound and made perfect sense," and claimed that irregularities with Tahmooressi's detention were grounds for dismissal of the case. The attorney said that his client was not provided with consular services for nearly eight hours after he was detained, nor did he have access to an adequate translator.

Europe
Ukraine Uses Air Strikes in East as EU Readies Sanctions
[BUSINESSWEEK] Ukraine hit separatists near Donetsk with air strikes, saying it killed more than 50, as the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
geared up to expand sanctions in response to the pro-Russian insurrection that's rocked the country since March.

The operation to dislodge gunnies who've seized parts of Ukraine's easternmost regions is in an "active phase," Defense Ministry front man Vladyslav Seleznyov said on Facebook. EU governments plan to impose asset freezes and travel bans on 11 more people accused of fomenting unrest, two officials said. The U.S. said more Russian sanctions are possible.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko dismissed Russia's declaration that the separatists want peace talks, pressing on with an offensive to regain territory after fighters abandoned strongholds at the weekend and fell back to the Donbas region's biggest city of Donetsk. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said the militias are ready for talks and "ultimatums and pre-conditions" must not stand in the way of peace efforts.

The Grand Turk
Turkey Passes Bill to Revive Kurdish Peace Talks
[AnNahar] Turkish politicians Thursday adopted a bill to revive peace talks with Kurdish rebels, in a move the government hopes will rally Kurdish votes to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi only they haven't dumped him yet...
bid to win presidential elections next month.

The placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
leader of the outlawed rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Abdullah Ocalan, hailed the move as a "historic development" and called on Turkey to implement the law "without losing time".

The law, also deemed as a "turning point" by the government, would grant immunity to key actors including politicians, diplomats and spies involved in peace talks with Kurdish myrmidons. It aims to end a three-decade long insurgency that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

The six-article package of reforms proposed by Erdogan's Islamic-rooted government provides a "legal framework" to advance peace negotiations with the PKK, which is designated as a terrorist organization by Ankara and its Western allies.

It would facilitate the rehabilitation of bully boyz from the PKK who give up arms to return home to Turkey, and give the cabinet the authority to appoint individuals and bodies to carry out talks regarding the so-called "Kurdish question".

The law would also prevent officials from being prosecuted for taking necessary measures to ensure that turbans lay down arms and return to Turkey.

The measures were passed with 237 votes in favour and 37 against in the 550-seat parliament where Erdogan's AKP party has comfortable majority.

Outgoing Turkish President Abdullah Gul must now sign the bill for it to become law.

Turkey's Kurds, who long complained of discrimination at the hands of the state, have begun to enjoy broader but limited democratic rights since Erdogan came to power in 2003 -- including education in their mother tongue in private schools.

Erdogan's government launched clandestine peace talks with the Ocalan in 2012 for a peaceful settlement to the conflict in the Kurdish majority southeast.

The rebels declared a ceasefire last year but peace talks stalled in September, when the turbans said they were suspending their pullout from Turkish soil after accusing the government of failing to deliver on promised reforms including constitutional recognition.

Ocalan, in his message relayed on Thursday by pro-Kurdish politicians who visited him in his prison on the island of Imrali near Istanbul, said: "It should not be forgotten that it will be the peoples who will be winners at the end of this process."

Local media reported on Saturday that Kurdish rebels would begin retreating from Turkey into their safe haven in northern Iraq in September as soon as the reforms came into force.

The withdrawal process is reportedly due to be finalized within 18 months.

This second withdrawal by PKK bully boyz will be subject to legal supervision, unlike the first one that started in May 2013.

The presentation of the bill comes as Erdogan is running to succeed Gul.

When he declared his candidacy for the presidency early this month, Erdogan pledged that the peace talks with the PKK would be rekindled.

"Turkey has no other option than a solution, brotherhood and peace," he said.

Backing from the country's Kurdish minority, who make up one fifth of the population, would secure Erdogan an outright victory in the first round of the polls due on August 10.

The election is shaping up as a two-horse race between Erdogan and opposition candidate Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, an intellectual who has not much chance against the formidable premier.

Another candidate, Selahattin Demirtas, was put forward by the pro-Kurdish HDP party, and is expected to struggle to break into double figures on polling day as many Kurds are expected to vote for Erdogan

#1  Good! I know the PKK are stinkers, but any move towards Kurdish independence/autonomy/unity, that sort of thing, is auspicious. Kurds and Indians should be USA allies, long since.

There is so much that could be done to cool fevered minds if even just a few received outlooks were substituted with actual fresh geo-moral, geo-linguistic and geo-cultural/political thinking. So much!

India-Pakistan
Police on lookout for kidnappers
[DAWN] Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mushtaq Sukhera has directed the regional coppers across the province to increase security following intelligence reports that a vehicle carrying three burqa-clad women along with a well-dressed man on the front seat might be used to kidnap an influential person.

According to the source, the IGP, in his letter to all RPOs, directed deployment of extra police at the exit and entry points and to intercept a vehicle in which three burqa-clad women are seated with a well-dressed man.

The IGP also held a meeting with the regional police officer Rawalpindi Akhtar Omer Hayat Laleka on Wednesday and reviewed the law and order situation in the division — especially with reference to the surge in street crimes in Rawalpindi.

The IGP also asked the respective police heads to enhance patrols in their areas and provide information to avert any untoward incident.

Walter Liew, California man, sentenced to 15 years for espionage
[FOXNEWS] A Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, chemical engineer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined $28 million after his rare economic-espionage conviction for selling China the technology that creates a white pigment.

A federal judge on Thursday ruled that Walter Liew's theft of DuPont Co.'s secret recipe for making cars, paper and a long list of everyday items whiter warranted the lengthy prison sentence.

U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White said Liew had turned against his adopted country over greed.

A jury convicted the 56-year-old Liew of receiving $28 million from companies controlled by the Chinese government in exchange for DuPont's technology.
