George McGovern Dead at 90
Stomped by Nixon in '72, he was a die-hard Dem Liberal, but at least he served honorably:
McGovern enrolled at Dakota Wesleyan University and married classmate Eleanor Stegeberg on Oct. 21, 1943. But within months, he left to fly a B-24 in World War II. On his bunk, he read philosophy and history. The books broadened him, and he came home, he said, wanting to know more about "the nature and destiny of man, about the adequacy of our contemporary value system and the capacity of our institutions to nurture those values."

He also returned a hero. On one of 35 missions against Nazi targets in Europe, he took hits that blew out most of the nose of the plane and wounded a gunner. Shrapnel cut the hydraulic brake and electrical lines. He ordered his crew to crank down the landing gear and tie parachutes to girders just inside the rear hatches. He landed and released the parachutes. Not a life was lost. McGovern was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

#3  Compared with the current crop of lunatics his party spawns, the man comes out looking pretty good.
And after 35 missions in a B-24, he probably considered everything else that happened in his life as gravy.

-Election 2012
President Obama Announces A Clearance Sale
The President of the United States is apparently having a fire sale. The Obama / Biden campaign sent out an email on Saturday with a headline that any internet marketer would love, complete with stars and ALL CAPS. The email subject line is "? Our biggest sale EVER ?" and it promises big big savings of 30% off of everything (minimum order, $10) PLUS guaranteed delivery by election day at the "Last Call Sale."

But don't order yet! The commander-in-chief will ALSO give you free shipping! That's right, America; at these prices, you can't afford to NOT support reckless, failed policies!

Just what manner of swag can one purchase to help support the current leader of the free world? Aside from the stanard items like yard signs, buttons and bumper stickers that you'd expect from any campaign, the Obama Store contains a few products that stand out.

Every infant needs a My Two Dads Support Obama Baby Onsie because at that age, they are too young to ask to obvious biological question and thankfully, it's a steal at half-off; only $10! Don't worry, there's one for Two Moms--and if you're heterosexist, there's of Onsies that show men & woman holding hands; only $65!

And in a merchandising move that is just begging for a long series of jokes, the Obama Store is selling a Obama Knit Dog Sweater. The description reads: "This adorable Obama dog sweater will keep your furry friend feeling cozy and looking stylish."

Because Obama is a man of the people, there's also a Designer Store called Runaway To Win which features designs by top 1%er fashionistas like Vera Wang, Rachel Zoe, Ricky Martin.

Much of the collection is already sold out, but the Diane von Furstenberg tote is still available. Apparently even a modified American flag with Obama's name on the stripes, and hearts instead of stars, wasn't anything that Obama supporters felt like toting around; it's now marked down from $85 to the ultra bargain price of $25.

Also getting into the hipster flag desecration theme is rap mogul P-Diddy / Puff Daddy / Sean "Puffy" Combs who has a T-Shirt that literally looks like a serial killer took a razor blade to a flag and then used it as a room divider. The most nihilist American flag you've ever seen is marked down to $35, though.

Operators are standing by. Everything must go! And hopefully that includes the Obama administration in just a few weeks.

UN Warns Americans: Do Not Elect Mitt Romney
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights has warned Americans not to elect Republican Mitt Romney in next month's presidential election, saying that doing so would be "a democratic mandate for torture."
Thanks Sparky. Now off to Zimbabwe wit yez...
The UN's Ben Emmerson was referring to Romney's refusal to rule out the use of waterboarding in interrogating terror detainees, a practice that President Barack Obama has ended.
A practice President Obama says he has ended...or perhaps pledged to end. Obama promises all have an expiration date.
Colin Perkel of The Canadian Press reported Emmerson's remarks from a symposium in Toronto on the impact of 9/11 on human rights:

"The re-introduction of torture under a Romney administration would significantly increase the threat levels to (Americans) at home and abroad," Emmerson said. "Such a policy, if adopted, would expose the American people to risks the Obama administration is not currently exposing them to."
As in, our ambassadors would be at increased risk?
U.S. intelligence services were able to pinpoint Osama bin Laden's location and carry out the successful mission to kill him in May 2011 based on information yielded during waterboarding of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and information from Al Qaeda operative Hassan Ghul, who was captured in Iraq in 2004.

Obama opposed both waterboarding and the Iraq War, without which bin Laden would not have been found.

Emmerson warned that Romney could reinstate waterboarding if he took office. He also criticized the Obama administration's drone program--an initiative begun by the Bush administration but accelerated by President Obama, partly because of his reluctance to capture, detain or interrogate terror suspects.
Emmerson sounds like the kind of guy who relies on words, promises and emotions, as opposed to understanding how 80% of the world really works...

Funny you should mention that. The local hipster weekly had a letter saying Australians wanted us to vote for B-HO.

Reasons were Australians are nice (true), their country is sound financially (probably true) AND they have a carbon tax which is true, but every Ozzie I know (yeah, small sample) will tell you they hate the carbon tax and hate being lied to by their Prime Minister who promised there would never be a carbon tax - until she needed a deal with the Greens.

Rep. Jackson robocall: 'I am human. I am doing my best.'
The Chicago Sun Times is reporting that Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) sent out an automated message to constituents in his district on Saturday, asking voters to stick by him through his recent spate of difficulties.

"Like many human beings, a series of events came together in my life at the same time and they have been difficult to sort through," Jackson says in the call. "I am human. I am doing my best. I am trying to sort through them all."

The Chicago Sun Times reported earlier in the day that Jackson is returning to the Mayo Clinic for treatment of bipolar depression.

That report cited an anonymous source who said the press made it impossible for Jackson to continue treatment while living at his home in Washington, D.C.

"Jesse wanted you to know he is finding it difficult to continue his treatment because the press is staking out his home and making access to his doctor, who is within a short walking distance from his home, incredibly hard," the source said.

In June, Jackson took a leave of absence from Congress to be treated for the disorder. His office initially explained his absence as a break from stress and exhaustion, but later came forward to say the congressman actually was actually receiving treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for bipolar disorder.

"I am starting to heal," Jackson says in the robocall. "The good news is my health is improving, but my doctors tell me the road to recovery is a long one."

More recently, Jackson has returned to Washington, D.C., and continued receiving treatment. The lawmaker has not appeared on Capitol Hill since he returned, however, despite assurances from his office that he is running for reelection and intends to stay in Congress.

On Monday, The Wall Street Journal reported that federal investigators are conducting a criminal probe over allegations that he used campaign donations to decorate his house.

Despite his mounting troubles, most political analysts believe Jackson is a safe bet to win reelection next month in his highly Democratic district.

"For nearly 18 years I have served the people of the second district," he continues in the robocall. "I am anxious to return to work on your behalf, but at this time it is against medical advice, and while I will always give my all to my constituents, I ask for your continued patience as I work to get my health back."

#3  He should withdraw.

But he and his family have my deep sympathy. If you haven't seen, up close, someone you love wrestle with serious bipolar disorder or other mental illness, you have no idea how much courage it takes to try to get stable and to stay as well as you can with these serious disabilities. It can be a day by day, hour by hour fight, often with the double burden of addictions acquired before diagnosis.

#4  I suspect a resignation forthcoming from Triple-J would be quite doubtful. More likely would be a tragic South Chicago or SE D.C. back alley incident resulting in a large pool of blood and a congressinal vacancy.
Posted by: Besoeker || 10/21/2012 11:37 Comments || Top||

#5  Agreed. Bipolar depression is a serious medical illness. It requires intense treatment for the rest of one's life; setbacks and relapses are common. It's a tough situation for JJJ and his family, and they have my sympathy.

My advice, if I were asked: step back from political life. Concentrate on health, family and faith. Find some other fulfilling work that has a lot less stress. Being a member of Congress isn't worth your health and sanity.

#10  Lotp:

It can be a day by day, hour by hour fight, often with the double burden of addictions acquired before diagnosis.

Preach it. If this is indeed the case - and sadly, because of my knowledge of Chicago politics and the Jackson family, I simply cannot shake some skepticism - then the bravest thing he can do is say, 'Enough" and quit. The power and perks simply are not worth what this will do to his life.

My wife Melissa - the most loving, caring, and devoted woman I've ever known - suffers from bipolar and that double burden. It is indeed one day at a time, and some of those days can be long ones.

But wither she goest, I shall go too, even unto the end.

Democratic super PAC to revive attacks on Romney's Bain record
A Democratic super PAC with ties to the White House announced Saturday that it plans to reinvigorate its efforts from earlier this summer to attack Republican presidential candidate Willard Mitt Romney
...former governor of Massachussetts, currently the Publican nominee for president. He is the son of the former governor of Michigan, George Romney, who himself ran for president after saving American Motors from failure, though not permanently. Romney has a record as a successful businessman, heading Bain Capital, and he rescued the 2002 Winter Olympics from the midst of bribery and mismanagement scandals. More to the point, he isn't President B.O...
for his leadership at private equity firm Bain Capital.

Bill Burton, a former Obama front man who runs Priorities USA Action, suggested in a Saturday memo that the best way to stop Romney from rising in the polls is to remind voters of his "time in the private sector and the devastating impact he had on middle class Americans."

"Polling data clearly illustrates that Mitt Romney's business experience -- the central credential and professed asset for his candidacy -- has become a real liability following months of Priorities USA Action's advertising this spring and summer," Burton wrote.

Republicans bracing for 'October surprise' as Gloria Allred 'prepares for Romney revelation'
Republicans are bracing themselves for Gloria Allred to make a potentially damaging revelation about Willard Mitt Romney
...former governor of Massachussetts, currently the Publican nominee for president. More to the point, he isn't President B.O...
, just weeks before the election.

The pro-President B.O. lawyer is rumoured to be preparing for her so-called 'October surprise' in which she will strike the Republican presidential hopeful's chances by unearthing some sort of secret or scandal.

Ms Allred has refused to comment on the rumours, which first surfaced in a tweet by the Drudge Report's Matt Drudge on Thursday.

'Here she comes. Hearing Gloria Allred out there again, about to make a move. After all, it's her time of the campaign. Team O at the ready!!' Mr Drudge wrote on Twitter.

According to RadarOnline.com, Ms Allred launched a last minute strike on GOP Meg Whitman's campaign for governor of Caliphornia by representing a disgruntled former housekeeper.

In the pivotal moments of the campaign, the lawyer wheeled out Nicky Diaz who alleged that she was fired by the Whitman family because she was an undocumented Democrat.

Whitman went on to lose the election to Democrat Jerry Governor Moonbeam Brown
... those who ignore history are bound to repeat it ...

Ms Allred refused to confirm or deny the rumours regarding Governor Romney.

#14  If you're running Champ's campaign and you have some good dirt on Mitt, do you let Gloria Allred -- who would surely be in any discussion of "Who is the world's most despised woman?"-- dish it? When the NYT or the WaPo or Sandra Fluke would happily do the job?

I think the October surprise is more likely to consist of Champ, shortly before the foreign policy debate, bombing a tent full of hapless Libyan goat herders and announcing that he got the guys who killed Ambassador Stevens and the three other bumps in the road. (A SEAL raid would be much more dramatic, but it turns out that those guys have an inconvenient propensity to tell the truth.)

#18  The pic of Brown brings back memories. When it first came out - Brown and Ronstadt had gone to Africa together. When the "propriety" of that trip was questioned, Brown said "nothing happened between us". A local SF columnist said - only with Jerry would that probably be true....

#20  When the NYT or the WaPo or Sandra Fluke would happily do the job?

Ummmmmmmmmm...maybe not.

Sandra Fluke, the woman at the center of a media firestorm earlier this year after Rush Limbaugh called her a “slut,” spoke Saturday in front of about 10 people at the Sak ‘N Save in north Reno.

The speech was part of a daylong effort by Democrats to get Northern Nevadans to the polls on the first day of early voting.

Wow. That is soooooooo sad. Welcome to Hard Trivia Question Answer Land, sweetie. Get me a beer while you're up...

#24  Didn't Gloria Allred find some woman who came out of obscurity to say she had an affair with Herman Cain. The woman faded like a cheap dress as soon as Herman was destroyed politically. This seems to be Allred's MO--hit man womym for the Donks. I have trouble imagining what scandal could be out there about straight-laced Mitt. The Chicago Boyz are at work again.

#26  A story has been circulating for some time about a woman who had a problematic pregnancy (and 4 living children). Romney was a young Mormon bishop who took a firm line against aborting.

The intent is to show him as uncaring, out of touch, a danger to women, a secret extremist.
Posted by: lotp || 10/21/2012 20:17 Comments || Top||

#27  lotp, yep. He was a lowest-level public representative of a religion that believed abortion was wrong, and advised a young pregnant woman to pursue other avenues, which she did, and in hindsight is glad she did. Not surprisingly, that seems to be the response of a great many women who follow that kind of advice. Or are subjected to it against their desires (eg. 'Roe.')

In Connecticut, a Democrat struggles to pull ahead
Late last week, Rep. Chris Murphy, the Democratic contender for Senate in Connecticut, stopped in at El Flamboyan restaurant in Bridgeport.

This is one of poorest sections of the state's most populous city and home to the kind of Democratic Party loyalists Murphy needs in droves if he is to win on November 6.

With time running out before election day, he is locked in a close race with Republican Linda McMahon to fill the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Joseph Lieberman.

McMahon, a nationally-known former wrestling executive, has emerged as a disciplined, aggressive opponent two years after losing a senate race in this Democratic state.

"Linda McMahon keeps running a race on character attacks, and I'm running a campaign about the issues," Murphy told a crowd of news hounds and a few lunch guests at the Puerto Rican restaurant. "Ultimately, if the campaign is about issues, we'll do really well."

Murphy has been struggling. In a state where Democrats have a 16-point voter registration advantage over Republicans and where President Barack Obama
How's it going, Sunshine?...
, a Democrat, won by 23 percentage points in 2008, recent polls suggest the race is a dead heat.

A Siena College Research Institute poll released on Wednesday found Murphy edging out McMahon 46 to 44 percentage points, and other polls show a similarly close race.

For Democrats, who hope to hold onto their 51-47 advantage over Republicans in the 100-seat U.S. Senate, the tight race in a Democratic state is a nail-biter they could live without. Last month, The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee began running ads attacking McMahon.

DNC Owes Union Bank $15M
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) now owes $15 million to the union-owned Amalgamated Bank of New York, campaign finance records show.

The DNC received a $7 million loan from the bank in September, in addition to the $8 million loan it took out the previous month, neither of which has been paid back. The loans account for the majority of the committee's $20 million in total debt.

The DNC paid Amalgamated Bank more than $18,000 in loan interest for the month of September, the records show.

Amalgamated Bank, often described as "America's Labor Bank," is a national entity, the majority of which is owned by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a large, politically active union with deep ties to the Democratic Party.

#1  Just wait... these clowns in the Jack-Ass Party think that their IOU's are good, because they have been lulled into believing in Obama Spending Policies, and they will pay the debt off. HUH !

If there ever was a reason for Banking reform this is it, NO BANK should be involved in campaign financing... Where is the collateral for the loan... Obama's balls ? ... he ain't got none... nor does the Head of the Dem Party Debbie Wasserman Schultz, but discussing that would get us into the "voting your feminine parts" instead of your intellect. So Debbie, do you have a PIMP to help you out in collecting for the debt ?

#3  Iff the Bammer is re-elected, maybe the DNC can demand he do a France ..

To wit,

* DEFENCE.PK/FORUMS > [French National Assembly]FRANCE APPROVES 75% TAX RATE ON HIGHEST [income]]EARNERS, for a two-year period on those making more than US$1.3Milyuhn or EU$1.oMilyuhn per annum, i.e. an estimated 1500 Persons.

"To Each according to their Means".

UMP LAWMAKER = argues that the 75% rate is a de facto punitive tax, + fears that an unknown number of Taxpayers will choose to leave France.

"Taxpayers" also read - COMPANIES, ASSETS/INVESTMENTS + LOCAL JOBS, ETC. DERIVED THEREFROM.

and

* SAME > FRENCH REPORT [Govt.] TO URGE PAYROLL CUTS - MEDIA. Payroll tax only?

The new law only affects those earning par or above 3.5X French gross minimum wage of EU$9.4 an hour or EU$1,425.67 an month.

ARTIC = any lost Revenues must be made up by massive cuts in Public Spending, "far beyond" the original EU$10.0Bilyuhn envisaged in the 2013 Budget; + increases in VAT + CSG Levies.
