-Lurid Crime Tales-
Umm ... Thanks Guys, But He Can Keep It
GUILFORD, N.Y. (AP) — A police official at the Chenango County Sheriff's Department said authorities plan to let "nature to take its course" after a furniture delivery man gulped down a diamond ring.

The waiting game for the evidence began after Michael Kuchinski, 35, of Binghamton, admitted swallowing the $1,000 ring after seeing it on a bedroom dresser Tuesday afternoon. Sheriff's deputies took the man to a hospital in Norwich, where doctors used X-rays to determine that ingesting the ring wouldn't harm him. Kuchinski was then admitted to the hospital after he said he felt ill.

Kuchinski was charged with larceny and criminal tampering, for delaying the recovery of the ring.
I got to see a similar situation once as a medical resident. The guy volunteered to chug as much milk-of-magnesia as required to deliver the stolen merchandise (a tennis bracelet, as I recall), so as to avoid additional charges.

Sticky-Fingered Skittles Snatchers Call the Scene of the Crime
Everyone knows the bad guy always returns to the scene of the crime, but actually calling the scene and identifying oneself is … well … it’s just stupid.

Mitchell Scudder and Brian Current, two bad-to-the-bone bandits with a craving for candy, stole $30 worth of Skittles and Starburst from a Little League concession stand in Minnesota, the Associated Press reports. But these sugar-fueled sneaks forgot a fairly important piece of evidence after grabbing the goodies from the stand — Scudder’s cell phone.

Cops, who found the phone in the building, were undoubtedly surprised — albeit pleasantly — when the owner of the phone gave his missing mobile a ring and identified himself to the officers on the other end of the line.

The police arranged a phone-returning rendezvous with the sticky-fingered candy crooks. When the officers arrived at Scudder’s house, he answered the door with a mouthful of Skittles. Cops found 20 bags of candy in the house, and another 20 in a backpack. Damage to the concession stand was estimated between $500 and $1,000.
Old cop saying: if all the crooks were smart the jails would be empty.

Behold! The Traffic-Snarling Paper Clip of Doom
ASHLAND, Wis. (AP) — Traffic signals that went haywire at the city's busiest intersection over Memorial Day weekend left technicians stymied for five days until state experts discovered the cause: a wayward paper clip.

The malfunction reverted the signals at Ellis Avenue and Lakeshore Drive to a default mode, flashing yellow and red. Typically, the signals only go out after accidents in which a vehicle hits one of the poles, but there had been no such crash.

When city crews finally called in the state Department of Transportation for help, a DOT official spotted the culprit — a paper clip had fallen behind the signal's control panel and shorted out the system. Ironically, the paper clip had been used to hold a card with names and phone numbers of technicians who maintain the signals, said Pat Colgrove, city operation manager.

"I was shocked," he said. "I said, 'You got to be kidding me."'

Detroit 911 Operators Are Arraigned
DETROITTwo 911 operators who authorities say did not believe a 5-year-old boy who called to say his mother had collapsed were arraigned Friday on willful neglect of duty charges.

Judge Jimmylee Gray entered not guilty pleas for Sharon Nichols 43, and Terri Sutton, 47. If convicted of the misdemeanor, they could get a year in jail. The women declined to comment afterward, but their lawyers said the operators intend to fight the charges. "We look forward to coming to court and defending this case in the proper forum," said Sutton's lawyer, David Lee.
Translation: they're stone cold guilty, but he's getting paid.
No police car was sent after Nichols took the first call on Feb. 20. The boy then called again three hours later, and Sutton sent police out to discipline the child and inform the parent that the youngster was dialing 911, prosecutors said. When police finally arrived, 46-year-old Sherrill Turner was dead.

Disciplinary action against the operators was pending and could range from suspension without pay to dismissal, police said.
You'd think this would be easy, wouldn't you.

#1  "We look forward to coming to court and defending this case in the proper forum," said Sutton's lawyer, David Lee.

Wanna guess the first thing Mr. Lee tries to do is to get the 911 tapes thrown out on a technicality?

#2  No, I think the union starts taking every call seriously.
Posted by: Nimble Spemble || 06/09/2006 16:44 Comments || Top||

#3  As a former 911 operator, you learn quickly which kids are playing around (laughing, refusing to get an adult on the line) and which ones are in some kind of trouble even if they can't articulate what the problem is (they are frightened, are indicating something bad is happening to mommy/daddy/whoever else is around, are crying, etc.)

The first operator should be facing some kind of felony charge, not just a willful neglect one. No way will I ever believe that blowing off a call like she did could possibly be standard operating procedure in any professional law enforcement agency. The second operator did the absolute minimum that would be required, but still had a major lack of judgment if she couldn't tell the difference between a kid playing on the phone and a kid trying to get help.

I only hope these two aren't still taking calls while the department decides what action they will take. Suspension without pay isn't strong enough in this case.

Twins Swap Places in Successful Jailbreak
A Russian man who was in pre-trial custody over charges of leading a criminal gang, has escaped from jail in Novosibirsk, leaving his twin brother in his stead, the Interfax news agency reported Friday.
I think I've seen this movie
Valerii Voblikov’s twin brother participated in the trial as his civil defense lawyer. Thus, he was allowed to stay in his brother’s cell without supervision.
When the brothers were alone they swapped clothes and Voblicov took his brother’s documents which allowed him to walk out of jail. He made his getaway in a car waiting for him near the prison entrance.
"So long, Val. You will be coming back for me.......Val? Hello?"
This has not been the first escape for Vblikov, a former police officer. In 2005 he escaped from jail in Yaroslavl’, where police refused to give details on his getaway.

A new criminal case has been made against Voblicov’s brother, who has been charged with assistance in the jailbreak.

Feline reality show.
LOS ANGELES, Jun 8, 2006 (AP Online delivered by Newstex) -- The fur really could fly on TV's latest reality entry: It stars cats. Ten felines, picked from animal shelters nationwide, will live in a New York house to vie _ a la "Big Brother" or "Survivor" _ for a grand prize, in this instance an executive-level job with Meow Mix cat food.

"This thing is very tongue-in-cheek," Ira Cohen, the company's director of advertising and marketing, said Thursday.
Until the cats wash themselves.
The project will be shown in three-minute segments in the 9 p.m. EDT hour Friday on the Animal Planet channel for 10 consecutive weeks, starting June 16. It had yet to be decided if the segments from the Webcam-equipped "Meow Mix House" on Madison Avenue will air at the same time each night.

#4  Are they neutered? Un-neutered cats are a nuisance, they scar and maim each others in bloody fights over territory, p*ss everywhere, kill kittens, and have only one goal : SEX.
All in all, they behave very much like streetgang members, with a few adjustments (p*ss = graffitis & tags, kittens = passerbys).
