Al-Muhajiroun: America had it coming
  • In London, Muslim cleric Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed, founder and leader of the radical Al Muhajiroun group, pronounces on the attacks in New York and Washington: "America had it coming". Mohammed told The Times of India, "Yes, it is Muslims who have done this. There is no one else who would feel that much anger against America".

Al Muhajiroun has offices in London, in Pakistan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Mauritius, and is alleged to train "fighters" for Kashmir, the Palestinian territories and Chechnya. Sheikh Omar said that he had spoken to 68 groups since the attacks happened on Tuesday. "I have spoken to everyone, jehadi groups, radical groups, people who offer support of all sorts. You name it: Algeria's GIA, Hezbollah, Hamas, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e Mohammed, Tanzeem ul Jihad of Egypt — none of them know who did it, none of them claim responsibility, but everyone is agreed that these are the consequences of American atrocities".

The Al-Muhajiroun leader added however, that he had not spoken to those close to Osama bin Laden. "We don't agree with bin Laden's methodology," he said blandly. (RASHMEE Z AHMED TIMES OF INDIA NEWS NETWORK)

    U. Mass. prof: America had it coming
  • Since the contested election in November and his coronation by the Supreme Court, George W. Bush, first, ignored the suffering of the Palestinians in the Middle East, then urged Israelis and Palestinians to settle their differences by leaving Ariel Sharon to pursue a policy of non-negotiation and state assassinations. When the world, at the U.N. conference in Durban, focused the bankruptcy of our policy, the delegations of both Israel and the United States walked out, rather than deal. ... How can we fail to see our policy has created zealots and suicide bombers, willing to attack us in our own skies, on our own soil?

The Palestinians' legitimate hopes for peace were raised by the Oslo Accords (signed on yesterday's anniversary), and by dogged efforts over eight years by President Clinton to reach a settlement. (Bill Israel is a UMass Journalism professor Massachusetts Daily Collegian)

Band decides to change album cover design...
  • A new album cover by hip-hop band The Coup -- whose music has a strong anti-capitalist bent -- had until recently depicted the World Trade Center exploding. Daria Kelly, director of sales for 75 Ark, the band's label, said the picture, which shows group member ''Boots'' Riley holding a detonator in front of the exploding towers, was yanked from the San Francisco-based company's Web site at by 9:30 a.m. PDT on Tuesday, hours after two hijacked airliners actually smashed into the World Trade Center's twin towers and brought them down, possibly causing thousands of deaths. (Reuters)

    Bush addresses nation
  • President Bush spoke to the nation briefly three times yesterday and again this morning. Last night he said:

These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed; our country is strong.

A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.

America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.

Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature. And we responded with the best of America--with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could. Mickey Kaus: Story will be off the news by Thanksgiving
  • Mickey Kaus
Media coverage of the 9/11 attack often emphasizes that it will be a "long time before America gets back to normal," etc. The opposite is likely to be closer to the truth -- we'll get back to normal all too quickly, in keeping with the tendency (often discussed in this space) for the population to process information much faster than in former, less wired times. (Don't you feel as if you've lived about a month in the past two days?) I suspect the story will be off the evening news by Thanksgiving -- a denial, in a warped way, of the attackers' disruptive goal. ... (9/12)

    Feds storm Boston hotel
  • A heavily armed Federal Bureau of Investigation team stormed a Boston hotel searching for suspects in the terrorism attacks in New York and Washington. A couple of dozen officers, wearing bulletproof vests and carrying shields, were seen bringing fiber-optic equipment into the Westin Hotel in the Back Bay section. WHDH-TV reported the officers were using the equipment to check under hotel-room doors on the hotel's 16th floor, quoting a person who was inside the hotel. Three ambulances and a police car were stationed outside the hotel as a crowd of onlookers gathered there. Police officers returned repeatedly to a police truck outside to retrieve the fiber-optic equipment, which can be slipped under doors to see inside rooms, WHDH-TV reported. South Florida alert for possible terrorist
  • The FBI Terrorism Task Force has issued a BOLO -- "be on the lookout" -- in South Florida for a man they are saying is armed with an AK-47 and is extremely dangerous. The BOLO lists two names for the man: Amer Kamfar and Amer Taiybkamfar. He is described as a 41-year old man, 5 feet 9 inches with dark hair and eyes and a stocky build. They are also looking for a 1996 silver-blue Voyager with the tag number FD97RFU. The tag number is traceable to two addresses, one of them the Vero Beach house FBI agents have been searching for much of the day. (WPLG-TV, Miami)

    Casualty figure may be 15 - 20,000
  • Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas was informed today that the casualty figures will likely range between 15,000 and 25,000. She didn't specify whether the figures include the dead and wounded or only the dead. Hutchison told WOAI radio that we've lost tens of thousands of Americans through an act of war against our people. Hutchison says we should determine with a moral certainty who did this ... then make an ultimatum to the country where this person is -- to give the person up. Hutchison says if they don't, "We should go in, attack them, and wipe them off the face of the earth." (KOIN.com)

White House and Air Force One may have been targets
  • "The White House and Air Force One may have been targets of the terrorists responsible for the Pentagon attack, according to White House officials," CNN reports. "That is why President Bush was flown from Florida to several military bases until his security in Washington could be guaranteed. Officials say the jet that slammed into the Pentagon may have been originally destined for the White House." Fox News is also reporting. (JAMES TARANTO AND IRA STOLL, WSJ Best of the Web Today)
Whether it was the case at that moment or not, Bush will be a target of attack by the same people who attacked the WTC. He's as much a symbol as they were.

Osama bin Laden tops list of suspects
  • As smoke billowed from New York and Washington after yesterday's surprise terrorist attacks, blame fell quickly on Osama bin Laden -- but the list of suspects is longer than that. There is no shortage of fanatics around the world who would love to cause mayhem in the heart of America, from the Japanese Red Army to Colombia's FARC rebels to the Palestinian guerrillas at war with Israel. Feds have names of 12 hijackers
  • The FBI says it has names of 12 hijackers. There were three on each flight and three who gave south Florida phone numbers. Charlie Voss, a former employee at Huffman Aviation in Venice, says agents who interviewed him at his home have told him that authorities found a car at Boston's Logan International Airport registered to the two men. He says one of men who stayed at the house in July 2000 was named Mohamed Atta. He says he knew the other man only by the name of Marwan. (WPLG-TV, Miami)

  • "Authorities in Massachusetts identified at least five Arab men as suspects in yesterday's terror attacks launched from Logan International Airport, seizing in the central parking garage a car laden with Arabic-language flight training manuals," reports the Boston Herald. Feds going over manifests
  • A U.S. official said efforts are being made to scrutinize the passenger manifests on four airliners hijacked yesterday in Boston, Newark and Washington's Dulles International Airport. Hijacking days are over

Cal. Peace Action: "Eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind"
  • We fear that this violence will be the catalyst for additional and equally tragic violence. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once wrote, "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." We call upon the US government to exercise the greatest restraint in responding to these attacks and to respect the rule of international law. (California Peace Action, statement on their web site)
On the other hand, if your eye is struck out and you do nothing, you can lose the other one, too. Yes, Virginia -- and California Peace Action -- there is Evil in the world. This is it.

    Sullivan: New era has begun
  • "It feels--finally--as if a new era has begun. The strange interlude of 1989-2001, with its decadent post-Cold War extravaganzas from Lewinsky to Condit to the e-boom, is now suddenly washed away. We are reminded that history obviously hasn't ended; that freedom is never secure; that previous generations aren't the only ones to be called to defend the rare way of life that this country and a handful of others have achieved for a small fraction of world history. The boom is done with. Peace is over. The new war against the frenzied forces of what Nietzsche called ressentiment is just beginning." (Andrew Sullivan)

Prisoners' reactions just like anyone else's...
  • "One of the more surreal war stories I've heard so far comes from my brother, who works as a prosecutor in Galveston. He says that, rushing from point A to point B yesterday, he cut through a minimum-security wing of the jail. All the prisoners were gathered around the televisions in their orange jumpsuits, closely following the story of the terrorist attack, just like the jailers & with pretty much the same reactions. They say this sort of thing brings Americans together, and they're righter than they realize." (Virginia Postrel)

    Tenet should resign...
  • Michael Ledeen, in a National Review Online piece, calls for the resignation of the director of central intelligence, George Tenet, and several other officials:

    W. must hold his people accountable for this massive intelligence and security debacle. Tenet and the head of the counterterrorism unit must go. The head of FAA security must go. It's silly to fire the new head of FBI, he was only just sworn in, but the head of their counterterrorism unit must go. In truth, they should not wait for the axe, they should resign at once, out of the utter shame of this humiliating catastrophe. But nobody does that any more, so the president must act. Hijackers killed stewardesses as diversion...
  • The Herald offers this account of the terrorists' modus operandi: "They started killing stewardesses in the back of the plane as a diversion. The pilot came back to help and that is how they got into the cockpit," said the source. . . . The suspects had no guns, but used shaving kits and other carry-on luggage to smuggle knife-like weapons made up of plastic handles embedded with razor blades, sources familiar with last night's developments said. Jeremy Glick, RIP
  • As United Airlines Flight 93 entered its last moments there was terror and violence on board — but also heroism. Minutes before the airliner smashed into a field southeast of Pittsburgh, passenger Jeremy Glick used a cell phone to call his wife at home in New Jersey and told her that he and several other people on board had come up with a plan to resist the terrorists who had hijacked the plane. Anticipating his own death, Glick, who celebrated his 31st birthday on Sept. 3, told his wife, Lyzbeth, that he hoped she would have a good life and would take care of their 3-month old baby girl. Alice Hoglan of California says her son, Mark Bingham, also spoke of a plan to tackle the hijackers in a last-minute cell phone call to her. (By Charles Lane Washington Post Staff Writer)

    WaPo: Assemble an alliance
  • A state of war also means a national commitment, nurtured by bipartisan cooperation in Washington, to attack and defeat the country's enemies. This means more than merely tracking down and arresting individual suspects, as has been done before. With time, it is likely that it will be possible to identify the larger network behind the attack; it should also be evident where it is based or obtains support. In the past the United States has shied away from squarely confronting regimes that were linked to terrorist attacks against Americans--such as Iran in the case of the 1996 Khobar towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, or Afghanistan in the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania by Osama bin Laden's network. It can no longer afford to do so. Instead, it must seek to assemble an international alliance to identify and eliminate all sources of support for the terrorist networks that would wage war on the United States. If necessary, it must act alone. There can be no greater purpose to foreign and defense policy in the coming years. (The Washington Post Editorial)

    WTC is gone...
  • The twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York are now gone. The bottom four stories of the south tower, all that remained following Tuesday's terrorist attack, have collapsed. A partial collapse has been confirmed at One Liberty Plaza, CNN reported. That, in turn, forced police to evacuate would-be rescuers from the area. There are no immediate reports of any injuries. Egyptian man-in-the-street liked 9-11 strike
  • Along with the celebrations in Gaza, East Jerusalem and the West Bank that we noted yesterday, some Egyptians also greeted yesterday's atrocity with delight. The French press agency AFP reports: Egyptian students, taxi drivers and shopkeepers crowded round television sets stacked up in electrical store windows in downtown Cairo Tuesday evening, celebrating a string of elaborate attacks on New York and Washington. "Bullseye," commented two taxi drivers as they watched footage of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York shrouded in plumes of smoke after two presumably hijacked planes slammed into them earlier in the day. Egyptian Gazette sez Bush doesn't appreciate gamble he's running
  • The Egyptian Gazette states that the US President simply does not appreciate "the big-time gamble he is running overseas in the Middle East." The Gazzette warns that "[a]nti-American suicide bombings could well happen even in the most moderate Arab Gulf states, with which Washington enjoys a special relation — There is also the possible return of the oil weapon — the global economy is so precarious at the moment that even a small oil shock could have a massive ripple effect.
