[Jpost] The Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
on Monday grabbed credit for killing a U.S. service member during festivities with U.S. and Afghan government forces in the northern province of Kunduz, a Taliban front man said.

The U.S. military said earlier a service member was killed in action on Monday.

The U.S. military gave no further details and withheld the name of the service member until the next of kin were informed.

Car Bomb Targets Upscale Hotel In Central Somalia
[RADIOSHABELLE] A jacket wallah detonated an explosives-laden vehicle outside a hotel hosting senior military officials in central Somalia, killing at least six people Saturday evening, say police.

The powerful blast shattered the windows of the Global Hotel in Galkayo town and destroyed several cars, said Col. Ahmed Bishar. The hotel accommodates Somalia’s land forces commanders and other military officials, all of whom escaped unhurt, Bishar said.

At least 10 people were also injured in the blast in the town, which has rarely experienced similar attacks.

Russia sends another warship armed with cruise missiles to Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Russian Navy is sending another warship to the eastern Mediterranean, the Interfax News Agency reported on Saturday.

According to the Interfax report, the Admiral Essen frigate, which is equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles, is transiting Sevastopol en route to Syria’s Port of Tartous.

Interfax said the crew is currently passing the Black Sea straits of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles. It is planned that by the end of the day, today, the frigate will join the forces of the permanent connection of the Navy in the far sea zone.

In the Mediterranean, the Russian squadron operates on an ongoing basis. It includes about ten warships and support vessels. In September, the Russian military reported two submarines performing missions in the Mediterranean Sea.

Earlier, Russian ships and submarines fired their Kalibr cruise missile attacks at the turbans in Syria’s Idlib.

Iraq
Thousands protest in Iraq as deadline for new PM looms
[DAWN] Thousands erupted into the streets in Iraq’s capital and across the south on Sunday to protest against Iran’s kingmaking influence as the latest deadline for choosing a new prime minister loomed.

Anti-government rallies have rocked Baghdad and the Shia-majority south since October 1, with demonstrators calling for a complete overhaul of a regime they deem corrupt, inefficient and overly beholden to Tehran.

"The revolution continues!" shouted one demonstrator at a protest encampment in central Diwaniyah.

Protesters blocked off public buildings one by one in the southern Iraqi city, and put up banners reading "The country is under construction ‐ please excuse the disruption".

Sunday marks the latest deadline ‐ already pushed back twice by President Barham Saleh ‐ for parliament to choose a new premier to replace Adel Abdel Mahdi, who tendered his administration’s resignation last month.

Parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halbussi on Sunday travelled to Arbil, capital of the Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq, to discuss who could become the next premier, the presidency there said.

Officials say Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan, the abbreviation IRGC is a cognate form of Stürmabteilung (or SA), the term Supreme Guide is a cognate form of either Shah or Führer or maybe both, and they hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
wants to install Qusay al-Suhail, who served as higher education minister in the government of Abdel Mahdi.

"This is exactly what we oppose ‐ Iranian control over our country," said 24-year-old student Houeida, in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the protests.

The demonstrators categorically reject Suhail’s candidacy, along with anyone from the wider political establishment that has been in place since dictator Saddam Hussein was deposed in 2003.

"Hundreds of deaders have fallen and they are still not listening to our claims", said 21-year-old student Mouataz, in Tahrir Square.

"We want a prime minister with integrity, but they bring back a corrupt man in their image whom they will allow to continue robbing us," he added.

In a bid to secure the necessary parliamentary majority for a new premier, Shia powerhouse Iran enlisted the services of a Lebanese Hezbollah official to negotiate with Sunni and Kurdish parties.

The post of prime minister is by convention held by a Shia in Iraq’s post-2003 political system.

In a Twitter plea to Saleh, one opposition Sunni politician called for the president to "violate the constitution rather than plunge the country into bloody chaos by choosing a figure people have already rejected".

Some in parliament ‐ the most fragmented in Iraq’s history ‐ argue that Saleh should use Article 81 of the Constitution, which authorises the president to step in as prime minister himself if there is no agreement among politicians on a candidate.

In a sign of the protesters’ unprecedented influence, top Shia holy man Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, who is said to have made and unmade every premier in the post-Saddam era, has been notably absent from the manoeuvrings this time around.

The protest movement has been hit by intimidation, including liquidations perpetrated by militias, according to the UN.

Armed Palestinian infiltrating from Gaza Strip shot by IDF troops
[JPost] A Palestinian man was shot and arrested after he infiltrated from the Gaza Strip and threatened IDF soldiers with a knife, the Israeli military said on Monday.

The Israeli military said that the man was spotted crossing the border fence from the southern Gaza Strip into Israeli territory and a unit dispatched to intercept him saw him holding a knife in a threatening manner.

They responded by firing at the man's legs, wounding him. He was treated by medics at the scene before being arrested by the troops for an initial investigation. He was then taken to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment

Early American settlers used to "bark" squirrels by shooting below a squirrel on a tree branch and kicking up a fatal spray of wood and bark. This left you with a more usable squirrel than putting a .40 cal ball thru the critter

Pure speculation:
I wonder if the IDF is doing something similar with the infiltrating Paleos - a spray of rock & dirt from a 3 round burst to get their attention and indicate the game is over with only minor "maiming".

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Airstrikes Saturday on rebel-held town in northwestern Syria kill 8
[AlAhram] Airstrikes on a rebel-held town killed eight people and maimed more than a dozen Saturday in Syria's northwestern province of Idlib, the last remaining rebel stronghold in the war-torn country, opposition activists said. The attack came amid a government offensive in the region.

The latest casualties in the town of Saraqeb came as government forces captured two new villages on the southern edge of Idlib. The province has been the center point of a government push under the cover of Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s, according to opposition activists and pro-government media.

The offensive has already forced thousands of civilians to abandon their homes and flee for their lives.

Saraqeb and Maaret al-Numan are two major rebel-held towns that sit on the highway that links the capital Damascus with the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest. The opposition's Syrian Civil Defense, also known as White Helmets, said that both towns are almost empty after most civilians fled.

Before this latest bout of violence that began a few weeks ago, the U.N. reported that some 60,000 Idlib residents had been displaced in recent weeks by the government offensive.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said eight non-combatants were killed and more than 20 maimed in the Saturday morning airstrikes on Saraqeb. The opposition's Syrian Civil Defense said eight people were killed and 25 maimed in the airstrikes saying that it hit a market.

Since a cease-fire imposed at the end of August collapsed in the past weeks, the government has been pushing to clear access to the strategic Damascus-Aleppo highway. Syrian troops have been pushing northward toward Maaaret al-Numan in recent days.

[ALMASDARNEWS] The jihadist rebels in southeastern Idlib suffered several setbacks on Saturday after the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies pushed through their defenses to advance further north towards Ma’arat al-Nu’man.

Led by the 5th Corps and 25th Special Mission Forces Division, the Syrian Arab Army managed to capture another seven villages and towns from the jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else

According to a military source near the front-lines, the Syrian Arab Army captured on Saturday the towns and villages of al-Bustan, al-Sayyadeh, al-Qatrah, Tal Dam, Sarjah Gharbiyah, Harran, and Mudaysirat.

Prominent Syrian Army commander makes appearance in southeast Idlib

[ALMASDARNEWS] The prominent commander of the 25th Special Mission Forces Division (formerly Tiger Forces), Major General Suheil al-Hassan, made an appearance in southeastern Idlib on Sunday.

General al-Hassan was seen taking off in a military helicopter as he observes the ongoing Syrian Arab Army offensive in the southeastern countryside of the Idlib Governorate.

It is not a surprise to see the military commander near the battlefield, as he has been known to make appearances at the front-lines during offensives.

Jihadist suicide attack kills 6 Syrian soldiers in southeast Idlib

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Russian Army announced the death of six Syrian soldiers and the hospitalization of 13 others in a suicide attack in Idlib governorate, northern Syria.

The head of the Russian Reconciliation Center, Major-General Yuri Borenkov, said that the Syrian Army forces repelled an attack by gunmen from the Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham terrorist group; however, during this assault, the jihadist forces managed to carry out a suicide bombing.

Borenkov added that the militants ’attack was stopped by artillery fire from the Syrian Armed Forces, which resulted in heavy losses for the attackers.

Borenkov stressed that the Russian Center for Reconciliation calls on the leaders of illegal armed groups to abandon armed provocations and initiate a peaceful settlement of the situation in the areas under their control.

Jihadist rebels transferred ‘chlorine gas’ to southern Idlib: Russian media

...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
(HTS) has transferred three cylinders containing chlorine gas to the southern Idlib countryside this week, Sputnik Arabic reported on Saturday.

According to the Russian publication, the jihadist rebels of the al-Nusra

to the town of Ma’arat al-Nu’man in southern Idlib and Saraqib in northeast Idlib.

Citing local sources, Sputnik Arabic said there are fears that the jihadist rebels will attempt to frame the Syrian Army to prompt an international response.

"Local sources in Idlib told Sputnik that button men from Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, which the al-Nusra terrorist organization uses as a front for it in Idlib, supervised leaders of the authority to remove several cylinders containing chlorine gas from the headquarters of the organization in the farms surrounding the cities of Saraqib and Ma`rat al-Numan, south of Idlib, amid tight security," the Russian publication reported.

Sputnik Arabic said their ’sources’ were members of the White Helmets organization, but did not provide more details.

"The sources added that the number of cylinders, which are likely to number 3, were handed over to ’experts’ of the Chechen and Belgian nationalities, who worked on transporting them by cycle of violences that took different routes at different times, apparently as a tactic to preserve the confidentiality of the destination the cylinders were transferred to," they said.

A similar claim was made by the publication last week, with similar sources mentioned in the report.

Syria regime widens control over Idlib, fuelling exodus: monitor
[Rudaw] Regime forces have seized dozens of towns and villages in northwest Syria from jihadists following days of violent festivities, fuelling an exodus of civilians, a war monitor said Sunday.

The fresh advances in Idlib province bring regime loyalists closer to capturing one of the largest urban centres in Syria's last major opposition bastion, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"This push is an attempt to get closer to Maaret al-Numan," Observatory head Rami Abdul Rahman told AFP.

Residents of the southern Idlib town flooded out of the area fearing further advances, an AFP correspondent there said. The Observatory said more than 30,000 people had fled the flashpoint area in southern Idlib in recent days.

Abu Akram, a resident, said rescue workers and local relief groups were struggling to get families out.

"Everybody is working at full capacity but they can't handle such a large number of people," the father of five told AFP after he couldn't find a vehicle to drive his own family further north.

The jihadist-dominated Idlib region hosts some three million people including many displaced by years of violence in other parts of Syria.

The Damascus regime has repeatedly vowed to take back the area and bombardment has continued despite a ceasefire announced in August.

Heightened regime and Russian bombardment on the Maaret al-Numan region since December 16 has forced tens of thousands of vulnerable people to flee their homes, according to the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
Damascus loyalists have since Thursday been locked in battles with jihadists and allied rebels, seizing a total of 25 towns and villages from their control, according to the Observatory.

Four days of fighting has killed 103 turbans as well as 71 regime loyalists, bringing the total toll to more than 170 dead on both sides, added the monitor, which is based in Britannia and relies on an extensive network inside Syria.

The Idlib region is controlled by the country's former al-Qaeda affiliate, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
Pro-government forces launched a blistering offensive against the region in April, killing around 1,000 civilians and displacing more than 400,000 people from their homes.

Syria's war has killed over 370,000 people and displaced millions since beginning in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-government protests.

Syrian air defenses confront Israeli missiles over southern Syria

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian air defenses confronted several hostile missiles that were fired towards southwestern Syria this evening.

"The Syrian air defenses resisted hostile missiles coming from the direction of the occupied territories," the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said in a statement.

According to an al-Masdar News source, the Israeli planes launched several missiles from both the occupied Golan Heights and Leb’s Mount Hermon (Jabal al-Sheikh) region.

Local reports in Damascus said that one missile reportedly hit the Aqraba suburb of Damascus; this is where Hezbollah was previously targeted by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

At least three powerful explosions were reported from Damascus this evening, indicating the high probability that some of the Israeli missiles hit their intended targets.

Earlier in the night, the Syrian air defenses shot down a drone over the city of Jableh in the Latakia countryside.

SANA reported that "anti-aircraft strikes a drone in the atmosphere of Jableh in Latakia countryside."

The Syrian defenses also prevented dronezaps over the Hama Military Airport after they shot down two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) that were traveling south from Idlib towards the installation.
The Jerusalem Post adds:
Israel attacked several targets in the Set Zaynab area near Damascus on Sunday night, the Lebanese newspaper Al Ahbar reported on Monday morning.

During the strikes several weapons warehouses were hit, causing material damages but no victims, the report added, according to Israeli media outlet Ynet News.

On Sunday night, it was reported that a UAV fell in the area of Aqraba in the outskirts of Damascus with the original target allegedly being an Iranian weapons storage facility.
