Economy
Congress Dims the 100-Watt Ban
The traditional incandescent light bulb won a nine-month reprieve late Thursday from new federal rules that would have led to its demise. The deal to avert a government shutdown starting Friday night includes a provision that prevents the Department of Energy from spending any money to implement or enforce the energy efficiency standards for light bulbs that is set to start going into effect for 100-watt bulbs in 2012.

The new standards and regulations remain on the book, even if they now won't be enforced.
Right next to the immigration laws.
"The industry is concerned that any delay in federal enforcement...will undermine those investments and also create regulatory uncertainty," said Kyle Pitsor, vice president of government affairs for the trade group.

He said it could allow some "bad actors" to import less efficient bulbs from overseas "without any fear of enforcement, thereby creating an uncompetitive disadvantage for U.S. manufacturers that made those investments."
Only if the public wants to buy them, Kyle.
But while environmentalists and the manufacturers supported the new rules, many conservatives and some consumers had objected at the lack of choice they would entail. The issue has been a lightning rod issue for the Tea Party.
Whynot just add a carbon tax to the incandescent bulbs? OK, how about a surtax? Maybe a tax credit for CFLs. Why do they have to take away the choice?
David Goldston, director of government affairs for the National Resources Defense Council, a leading environmental group, said there is broad bipartisan support for the higher standards. If there had been an up or down vote on the provision, rather than having it attached to a must-pass piece of legislation, he said it would never have passed.
David knows this, because he is one of the elite who get to choose for the rest of us.

#1  This is a non-win. The plants have already closed. The jobs are already exported to China.

And they didn't even repeal the law. All this did was strip enforcement funds through September, 2012.

#2  Really pathetic. The Democrats got most of what they wanted, and this is a boiled, dry bone thrown to the Tea Party congressmen.

"Yeah, they got a trillion dollars, and we got a light bulb."

"Did they tell you where to stick it?"

#4  Theoretically the CFL are a environmental hazard due to the trace amounts of mercury contained in them.

The environmentalists never think anything through, they are like a bunch of hormonal teenaged girls that rage against something with out rational thought.

I'm waiting for someone in the California nanny state to wake up and pass a law requiring some kind of huge fee to dispose of a broken or burned out CFL and then we'll have a black market on incandescent bulbs.

Has anyone ever thought of the concept of using more natural light, adding skylights and turning off lights when you are through using it?

CFL's are the liberals answer to a lack of common sense in their constituency.

Typical environmental wacko stuff, their cures are always worse than the problem.

Congress Stalls Again - for Two Months
On Saturday, the Senate agreed to a two-month extension in a payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits that will expire Jan. 1, top priorities for President Obama and congressional Democrats. For a Congress whose end-of-year squabble was already deeply unpopular, December's battle is likely to become February's war.

But extending the items for only a brief time came at a heavy price for Democrats -- a requirement that Obama quickly decide whether to issue a construction permit for the controversial 1,700-mile Keystone XL pipeline. That means Congress could be back to the same arguments in February -- whether to let taxes rise and unemployment benefits lapse -- just as Obama prepares to issue a ruling on the pipeline, which union leaders back but environmentalists oppose.
Ho, ho, HO! Caught between a rock and the deep blue sea! The One will try to swim with the rock.
If the House approves the deal, the White House has indicated that Obama will probably deny the pipeline permit, on guidance from the State Department that the 60-day window in the bill to make a decision is not long enough to complete necessary reviews of the routing through an environmentally sensitive area of Nebraska.
I thought the State Department decided already? And the environmental reviews were complete, except as far as the tree-huggers were concerned.

Retired Lt. Gen. Ric 'Dirty' Sanchez(D) Drops Out Of Texas Senate Race
Retired Lt. Gen. Ric Sanchez, the sole major Democratic candidate in the race to replace Republican U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, said Friday he is dropping out of the Texas race because of "pressing personal challenges" and a lack of funds.
He retired for the dual reason of the Abu Ghraib scandal, and the fact that he and J. Paul Bremer hated each other's guts.
Posted by: Anonymoose || 12/18/2011 14:04 || Comments || Link || [0 views] Top|| File under:

#1  Anyone that Bremer hated gets my vote.

Bremer screwed up the entire pacification process in Iraq with his policies that gave the Iraqis the justifiable impression we were an occupation force. He never understood the Iraqis. He also froze out most of the Iraqi contractors that wanted to participate in the reconstruction. Had he done that, the unemployment rate would have been lower, the reconstruction would have accomplished more, and there would have been fewer Iraqis standing around to work for the Baathists who had money.
I was in Baghdad in 2004, I was told that an American contractor that could get some JV's with local contractors could get work and I would be welcomed with open arms by the CPA.
The freaking CPA would not even let me in the Green Zone until the US commerical officer in Baghdad intervened. Then no one in the CPA would meet with me, no one with the Corps or KBR would meet with me and I wasted a trip. The Iraqis I worked with were very very ANGRY with the CPA policies toward local contractors.

#2  Bremer screwed up the entire pacification process in Iraq with his policies that gave the Iraqis the justifiable impression we were an occupation force. He never understood the Iraqis.

I'll qualify my own comment by saying that (unlike Mr. Clinton above), I've never been in the sandbox...my perspective comes from being an ex-squid semi obsessed with current events, politics and military history. That being said, I had the feeling as soon as the State Department hack Bremer was placed in charge, that everything was going to go to diaperfill in a big hurry. State was and is lousy with officials who wanted to sabotage our entire effort in Iraq.

#3  Sanchez is an American patriot, and the title of this post offends me. If I met him, I would shake his hand and thank him for his service.

Even so, I would not vote for him, because he does not represent me. But that does not make him a bad man. He is in my humble opinion a good man with whom I have honest disagreements. I wish him and his family well, and hope he finds useful work outside of politics.

I'm the fourth best president in American history ~ Barack Obama
Posted by: tipper || 12/18/2011 00:02 || Comments || Link || [0 views] Top|| File under:

#1  You most certainly are. You will be educational for all generations following. You shall be just like Peron or Mugabe. You will teach our nation that there is no utopia society and that no nation is beyond being destroyed the ignorant way.

We had Three Presidents that brought us to greatness (none of which were DEMOCRATS) and One that utterly destroyed us with the ignorance of the populace taught by the government schools (and MARX).

You are the best because you will teach the entire world how stupid your beliefs are and since all the rest of the nations are already in destitution and tyranny, after America, there are no others to ruin. Fourth best depends on what you are best at. Lenin was best at conversion, Stalin was best at killing, Hitler was best at effecting, and you are best at lying.

You Sir, are an arm of the grey horse of the Apocalypse. Or maybe a paw. Or a cud. Yes, cud.

#12  All of you are missing the point. If he says it his standard barers will make it so by repeating it a million times without sarcasm. Hear it enough many will believe it. That is the point. Call yourself number four and folks might debate who the top three are and simply accept your position.

Ask the King of Pop who invented his own nickname and insisted people use it until it took hold. Ask George W. Bush who was slurred (and continues to be despite any evidence) as the worst president ever until it took hold.

Doesn't have to take hold with everyone. Just the folks that pay minimal attention and of course, the media folks who already, mostly, believe it.

Hopefully the difference is so bad, the claim so bold and wrong, that he'll be laughed at and the acceptance won't take hold. The Big Lie works better than little ones.

#13  Johnson, FDR and Lincoln are the other three according to Obama.

It would be nice if this claim actually got people looking at Johnson and FDR a bit. We have a race-based welfare class and the full involvement into Vietnam with the draft and all thanks to Johnson and FDR's policies extended the great depression for years. Those are liberal icons. Compare them to Lincoln, the Republican icon.

#18  Oh, but Barack Obama was no mere man. He was a paragon of intelligence and civilized society. A savior to the world’s depressed. A lightbringer. A genius thinking thoughts the common man could never hope to comprehend. And his words—his beautiful words read from crystal panes—reached down to our souls and told us all would be well. With the simple act of casting a ballot for Barack Obama, we could make the world an immeasurably better place—a world of peace, of love, of understanding, of unicorns, of rainbows, of expanded entitlements.
