Anthony Esolen's 'Hope For America' and other selections
[Chronicles] If I were committed to wiping the United States from the face of the earth—and I am not—I might begin with defacing statues and memorials with graffiti.

My graffiti would be more literate than most. I imagine the Statue of Liberty’s base with the plaque bearing Emma Lazarus’ poem that begs the ancient world to send to us the "refuse of your teeming shore," men "yearning to breathe free." "I lift my lamp beside the golden door," says Lady Liberty. And I would augment the sonnet with these lines:
Such was the spirit of men who knew no fear,
But they are gone; their land knows them no more.
Abandon all hope, you who enter here.
I might likewise make many another sign more striking and accurate with the addition of Dantesque verse: "I am the way into the city of woe," would greet you upon entering the Kennedy Expressway on Chicago’s outskirts. "Welcome to the University of California, ’where men have lost the good of intellect,’" would be another. "Come see the masterpieces at the Guggenheim, for there you may see works ’plunged deep in just the sort of dung / you dump from human privies and latrines.’" At the Guggenheim, that description is sometimes not just figurative.

Alan Dershowitz's stark warning: Justice system becoming infected by critical race theory
[Just The News] Alan Dershowitz, the famed law scholar and appellate lawyer, has a stark warning for judges, prosecutors and defense lawyers: America's justice system is being corrupted by identity politics and critical race theory.

In an interview with Just the News, Dershowitz deplored the growing trend in recent criminal cases toward political agendas supplanting the neutral consideration of evidence and law that has been the lifeblood of U.S. jurisprudence for more than two centuries.

"It's becoming much more responsive, unfortunately, to critical race theory, basically, everything's about race," Dershowitz told the John Solomon Reports podcast in an interview aired this week. "Everything's about race or politics.

"The justice system has stopped being about is this particular person innocent or guilty beyond a reasonable doubt based on the evidence and based on the law. People today are rooting, cheering for verdicts. They want verdicts to reflect their narrative. They want verdicts to prove their way of looking at the world. Trials and justice have ceased to be about individual justice. They're about identity politics."

-Short Attention Span Theater-
CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart perpetuated opioid crisis, Ohio jury finds
[Washington Examiner] Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart perpetuated the opioid crisis in two Ohio counties, a federal jury in Cleveland found Tuesday.

The decision against the trio of major corporations marks the first time the retail arm of the pharmaceutical industry has been held liable in the long-standing epidemic of opioid overdoses and fatalities.

"For decades, pharmacy chains have watched as the pills flowing out of their doors cause harm and failed to take action as required by law," the lawyers for the two counties, along with attorneys for local governments across the country, said in a statement after the verdict.

"The judgment today against Walmart, Walgreens, and CVS represents the overdue reckoning for their complicity in creating a public nuisance," the statement read.

#10  Isn't the DEA supposed to monitor prescriptions? It would be easy to put all prescriptions into a database and then run a program to alert somebody when the number of opioid prescriptions written by one doctor for one patient exceeds a certain threshold. If they weren't doing it they should be fired for gross incompetence and negligence. But this lawsuit, instead of targeting the criminal doctors and law enforcement types, goes for the soft targets with the deep pockets.

Turns out There Was More Behind That 'Never Trumpers Quit Fox Over Tucker' Story
[Red State] As we reported, Never Trump commentators Stephen Hayes and Jonah Goldberg announced this week that they were leaving Fox as contributors because of Tucker Carlson’s Jan. 6 special.

BLUF:

However, as with anything about the Never Trump grift, it’s never quite what it seems. It turns out there was a little more behind the story, as a Fox executive revealed. He said "the network had no intention of re-signing Steve Hayes or Jonah Goldberg when their contracts came up in 2022."

Oh. Now, how hilarious is that? In other words, they made this great big posturing move, but they were on their way out anyway, because they weren’t going to be renewed. So, that’s the real context here. Did they know that? Because now, it sounds like an "I quit before they were going to let me go" situation.

And was this ’quitting’ an effort to make themselves more appealing to their liberal buddies, so that they might get contributing slots on CNN or MSNBC as the ’oh so principled’ ’Republican’ commentators because they weren’t going to have their deals at Fox anymore? You know that for neo-cons, that’s likely the next move.

What will happen in Donbass if Ukraine returns there: Lustrations, segregation and Museums of aggression
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
By Aleksandr Kots

[KP] Right now, the fate of Donbass, which has been living in a state of war for the eighth year, is undergoing a cardinal reversal. How serious everything is, is evidenced by the fact that the Russian Foreign Ministry has put on a public display the official correspondence with the foreign ministries of Germany and France.

#1  The "National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Armed Aggression of Russia against Ukraine" is established - the second Friday of March, annually.

#2  Why on earth would we get involved in such a convoluted clusterphuck in Russia's heartland? What business is it of ours?

Our country is coming apart at the seams. Shouldn't we attend to the fires raging all around us - the collapsing border, the anarchy in our cities, our disintegrating social order, runaway inflation, race warriors on the march?

Why on earth are we picking yet another fight when we have not won a major war in
76 years?

#5  Part of what's called Ukraine today is indeed part of historic Russia. That's why the inhabitants of those regions have no desire to be part of what's called contemporary Ukraine.

The obvious solution is for
A) the US to honor the original promise that Ukraine be demilitarized and neutral -- i.e. forswear ever to pull it into either NATO or the EU,
and
B) Ukraine to grant effective sovereignty to the Russian-speaking Transdniester regions in the east,
and
C) Russia to recognize the above concessions by withdrawing its troops.

Neutral. Demilitarized.
Neither-nor, a true "borderland," as per the original meaning of у-крайна

Economy
Majority of voters hold Biden responsible for inflation
[Washington Examiner] Is President Joe Biden responsible for inflation ?

That's what a majority of voters said in a Yahoo News/YouGov poll released Tuesday. Thirty-nine percent said Biden has a "great deal" of blame regarding inflation, while 18% said he deserves "some" of the blame.

When it comes to the economy, inflation is the most important issue nationally, 17% of the poll's respondents said.

Less than one-fifth of voters, only 18%, believe Biden is responding to the economic crisis efficiently, the poll found.

The economy could be affecting Biden's low approval rating, which stands at 43%, according to Yahoo News's write-up of the survey.

People are facing multiple economic challenges over the holiday season, including fallout from the coronavirus pandemic and the supply chain crisis. Unemployment, however, reportedly hit about a 50-year low.

The poll was conducted between Nov. 17 and 19 among 1,696 U.S. adults and had a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points.

Europe
Country often hailed as a model for all is a joke just now...
[Breitbart] Sweden elected its first-ever female Prime Minister on Wednesday morning, but she resigned just seven and a half hours later after her coalition government lost a key budget vote.
"We'll always have IKEA"
Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democrats, was selected in a Riksdag (Parliament) vote as Sweden’s 34th Prime Minister on Wednesday morning, replacing outgoing migrant-crisis era leader of the Social Democrat Stefan Löfven. Yet just hours later the Speaker of Riksdag announced the search for another new Prime Minister would begin after Andersson’s government collapsed before she’d even had chance to be sworn into the role.

The Budget for the Andersson government was up before Parliament Wednesday afternoon but failed to pass. The chamber instead elected to pass a so-called opposition budget written by right-wing minority parties, which had the government stayed it would have been forced to implement. The prospect of working to a budget that had been approved of by right-wing populists the Sweden Democrats was too much for coalition partners the Greens, however, who pulled out of the government in protest.

The Grand Turk
How Turkey was punished for the downed Su-24 in 2015
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. Full article posted on my personal blog.
[ChernarusianNarcoWarsProject] On November 24, 2015 over Syrian territory, near the Syrian-Turkish border, a Turkish F-16 fighter shot down a Russian front-line bomber Su-24, which bombed the positions of terrorist groups in the province Latakia. As a result, pilot Oleg Peshkov and serviceman Alexander Pozynich from the search and rescue service were killed, and an Mi-8 helicopter was destroyed. Navigator Konstantin Murakhtin was rescued and delivered to the Khmeimim airbase. The Turkish authorities accused Russia of violating the border and said that in this way they were protecting the Turkomans, a nation that Turkey considers to be related. Russia, in turn, accused Turkey of violating Syrian airspace and aiding terrorists.

This is a brief plot of events that froze Russian-Turkish relations for almost nine months. However, what happened after deserves a more detailed analysis. In the Russian Internet space, the opinion has long been strengthened and is being cultivated that Russia did not answer in any way for the destroyed equipment and the dead servicemen, fearing a full-scale war with NATO. But let's not get emotional and try to take a sober look at the facts.

An important aspect that needs to be taken into account is that the shooting down of the Su-24 was an ordinary provocation and a pre-planned action. Moreover, the Turks contradict themselves, declaring a violation of the airspace for a few seconds and immediately providing allegedly records with the controllers' demands to change the course lasting more than five minutes. Be that as it may, it is impossible to shoot down a plane that has violated the border for a few seconds (according to the Turks themselves), unless you wait for it in advance. And you can't go anywhere with professional shooting of a fall. But this crime looks even more despicable and cynical against the background of statements in 2012 by then Turkish President Abdullah Gul after Syria shot down a Turkish F-4 fighter:

"It is a common practice for combat aircraft to sometimes cross and leave [state] borders, given their speed over the sea. These things are not bad intentions, they just happen due to the difficulty of controlling the speeds of jet aircraft."

But the stolen Syrian oil and the greed for profit turned the head of the Turkish leadership. So much so that it turned into real accomplices of terrorism. Other facts indicate that the destruction of the Su-24 was deliberate and planned. For example, on January 29, 2016, Turkey accused Russia of the Su-34 violating its airspace. But the accusations were all limited: it's not the Su-24 to shoot down from an ambush, and the 34 can snap back much more seriously. Moreover, in the same January 2016, Russian fighters somewhat defiantly violated the border over border crossings - there is at least one video on the network. Do you think anyone took off to intercept?

Another important aspect that many people overlook. Remember what Erdogan said about the incident? That in this way he defended the Turkomans. So, he did not protect anyone. The Turkomans continued to bomb on the same day, even with even greater intensity. Actually, this is all you need to know about making rash decisions in geopolitics and the impossibility of their implementation.

This is all well and good, the reader will say. But where is the bombed out Istanbul, the defeated Turkish army?
