Al Qaeda Sisters Behead Aunt and Uncle, In Front of Children
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Three suspected al Qaeda militants, including two sisters, beheaded their uncle and his wife, forcing the couple's children to watch, Iraqi police said on Friday.

The militants considered that school guard Youssef al-Hayali was an infidel because he did not pray and wore western-style trousers, they told police interrogators after being arrested in Diyala province northwest of Baghdad.

The three cousins executed Hayali and his wife Zeinab Kamel at the all-boys school in Jalawlah in Diyala province, village police chief Captain Ahmed Khalifa said.

Actually, this needs to be SOP. Executed terrorist remains should be untraceable so that grieving relatives have no way possible of administering last rites or showing any reverence for the deceased. Terrorists need to become nonentities at our hands. Even if the operatives don't fear it, their families will and that sort of pressure goes a long way in Muslim societies.

Afghanistan
Aussie commando killed in raid
AN Australian commando has been killed mounting a raid on a Taliban bomb making compound in southern Afghanistan. Private Luke Worsley, a 26-year-old soldier from Sydney, was killed during a “protracted engagement” with insurgents at 7.30am (AEDT) this morning in the Oruzgan Province.

Defence Force chief Angus Houston said that he was involved in a mission against insurgents involved in the making of improvised explosive devices (IED). “He was one of our finest,” Air Chief Marshal Houston said. “He was shot, but I’m not going to go into any more detail than that.”

Air Chief Marshal Houston said that the battle occurred about 10 km from Tarin Kowt. “No other Australian troops were killed or wounded in this protracted engagement, during which our soldiers acquitted themselves magnificently.

“This is a tragic day for the Australian Defence Force and most especially for Private Worsley’s family and friends.

“I extend my deepest sympathies to them on behalf of all members of the Defence Organisation.”

Air Chief Marshal Houston said this morning's mission had been successful. "This mission specifically targeted bomb makers that improvise explosive devices or IEDs,'' he said. "IED's are weapons that don't discriminate and they are as much a danger to innocent Afghan civilians as they are to military forces.

"We will continue to go after the bomb makers.''

He said the Taliban sustained heavy casualties during the engagement, including a number killed and a substantial number detained. "If further progress is to be made against the Taliban these types of operations remain essential,'' he said. "Despite the tragic death of Private Worsley the job of helping the people of Afghanistan continues.''

Pte Worsley was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, having also served in East Timor in 2003. "The action in which Private Worsley died only concluded in the last few hours and was characterised by heavy, close-quarter fighting,'' Air Chief Marshal Houston said. "The SOTG (Special Operations Task Group) was conducting an operation to clear an identified Taliban bomb-making facility in Oruzgan province when the soldier was hit by small arms fire.''

This followed several weeks of monitoring and intelligence gathering by Australian and International Security Assistance Force elements.

He said Pte Worsley was a greatly respected soldier. "I am told his dedication and enthusiasm for soldiering was an inspiration to all those around him.''

The bulk of Australia's troops are based in the volatile southern province of Oruzgan, where fighting with the Taliban has escalated in recent months.

Trooper David Pearce died in an October 8 roadside bomb blast and decorated Special Air Service sergeant Matthew Locke was killed in action by a Taliban sniper on October 25. Sergeant Michael Lyddiard, of Townsville-based 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment, was injured on November 4 when a roadside bomb that he was trying to defuse exploded. He was the 28th Digger to be wounded in Afghanistan.

The first Australian fatality in Afghanistan was SAS soldier Andrew Russell, killed in 2002 when the vehicle in which he was travelling hit a land mine.

John Howard and Kevin Rudd were being briefed this afternoon are expected to comment later.

#1  Funny thing about dealing with tribal societies - they actually respect you more after you've killed some of them, they've killed some of you. You earn respect. That's one of the reasons the Sunnis turned in Iraq.

Peace activist wounded in Mogadishu
(SomaliNet)The head of Elman Peace and Human Rights organization said on Wednesday he had wounded in car accident which was an attempt on his life on Tuesday – as prominent peace activist woman, Madina Jeneral was killed in Mogadishu last week.
Mog isn't the most, well, peaceful place for an activist right now.
Speaking to the local reporters in Mogadishu, Engineer Sudan Ali Ahmed said he broke one of his leg after a group of men with a car deliberately targeted him and hit their vehicle with his motorcycle as he was driving near KM4 roundabout. “I came out from Nasa-Hablood hotel where I had held a news conference which I raised about a rape on eight-year old girl and the closure of Elman human rights center, then a car which I suspected hit my motorcycle directly and I had broken my leg,” said Sudan Ali. “I don’t know those who were behind such brutal act aimed to kill my life,”
Nope, no clue, couldn't be any of the crazed killer Islamic Court hard boyz, nope. Must be them Esquimaux ...
Mr. Ali ruled out that it was an accident and insisted that it was an attempt on his life but survived. “Investigations are now under way over who was responsible for the attack,” he added.

Britain
Pakistani jailed for spreading terrorist material
A Pakistani man, who pleaded guilty to distributing terrorist propaganda and helping a terrorism suspect breach a control order, was jailed for six years on Thursday. Abdul Rahman, 25, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to six years for dissemination of a terrorist publication and three years for aiding contravention of a control order, making him the first person to be convicted in Britain of such offences. He was also sentenced to six years for possession of an article for a purpose connected with the commission or instigation of an act of terrorism, All the sentences are to run concurrently.

Rahman was arrested in January 2007, for helping an individual to breach a control order by paying for a flight ticket out of Britain to Lahore. During a search of Rahman’s home in Manchester, northern England, detectives found a package to be sent to Pakistan and a letter from Afghanistan glorifying terrorist acts. The package contained combat knives, a mobile phone linked to the individual who had fled the country, another mobile phone and chargers. The “call to jihad” letter had been sent by Aslam Awan who had shared a house with Rahman, and who asked him to disseminate it to “brothers” in Britain.

Awan is suspected of taking part in terrorist acts against coalition forces in Afghanistan since he fled the country in 2006. He is now barred from returning to Britain. Also found during the search were video clips of an expedition to the Lake District in snow where Rahman, Awan and a third man, Muhammed Murad Iqbal, are seen undertaking military-style training and making references to martyrdom.

The blast was caused by a device containing over 300g of explosives and loaded with nails and scraps of metal, police sources told the Reuters news agency. As many as 19 people were on the bus, including two drivers, when the explosion took place.

Russian prosecutors have begun investigating the blast as a terrorist attack, according to the Interfax news agency.

Warring groups announce ceasefire in Kurram, agree to vacate trenches
The warring groups in Kurram Agency agreed to a ceasefire and handing over trenches to the political authorities on Thursday after successful talks with members of the peace Jirga.

Political administration sources said the entrenched warring groups have started vacating the trenches in the troubled areas of the Agency, and have announced a complete ceasefire —- ending a week of clashes which, according to unconfirmed reports, killed more than 100 and injured around 250.

The groups have started vacating their positions in Lower Kurram, Tangi, Palach Khel, and Sadda Town, the official sources said.

Meanwhile, NWFP Governor Lt Gen (r) Ali Muhammad Jan Orakzai has directed the Kurram Agency political agent to provide every possible help to the victims.

Local tribesmen took a sigh of relief after the ceasefire was announced and normalcy started returning to the agency.

The tribesmen, many of whom had migrated to other areas due to unrest in the agency since Friday last, started returning to their native areas.

#2  You asked for it.... and here we go..

Promenade across the floor
Sass shay right on out the door
Out the door and in to the glade
And everybody promenade

Step right up, you're doing fine
I'll pull your beard, you pull mine
Yank it again, like you did before
Break it up with a tug of war

Now into the brook and fish for the trout
Dive right in and splash about
Trout, trout, pretty little trout
One more splash and come right out

Shake like a hound dog, shake again
Wallow around in the old pig pen
Wallow some more, you all know how
Roll around like an old fat sow

Allemande left with your left hand
Follow through with a right-left grand
Now lead your partner, the dirty ol' thing
Follow through with an elbow swing

Grab a fence post, hold it tight
Whomp your partner with all your might
Hit him in the shin, hit him in the head
Hit him again, the critter ain't dead

Wop him low and wop him high
Stick your finger in his eye
Pretty little rhythm, pretty little sound
Bang your heads against the ground

Promenade all around the room
Promenade like a bride and groom
Open up the door and step right in
Close the door and into a spin

Whirl, whirl, twist and twirl
Jump all around like a flying squirrel
Now don't you cuss and don't you swear
Just come right out and form a square

Now right hand over and left hand under
Both join hands and run like thunder
Over the hill and over the dale
Duck your head and lift your tail

Don't you stray and don't you roam
Turn it around and promenade home
Corn in the crib pen, wheat in the sack
Turn your partner, promenade back

And now you're home
Bow to your partner
Bow to the gent across the hall
And that is all

Police close 5 net cafés in Peshawar
The city police have closed five net cafés at Khyber Super Market in the Gulberg Police Station precincts, sources told Daily Times on Thursday. On Wednesday, police closed four net cafes at Kabbari Bazaar in the West Cantonment Police limits.

Cantonment Superintendent of Police (SP) Ijaz Khan told Daily Times that the net cafes had not been closed but asked to remove the cabins due to security concerns. He said that last night, sources tipped off the police about presence of bomb in a net café, adding that keeping in view the security situation, officials asked café owners to remove the cabins from their shops in order to avert any possible sabotage. He added that owners of most net café in Peshawar were also involved in pornography, which was why police asked them to remove the cabins. Two people were injured when a net café was bombed on November 11, while a man died in a net café blast in the Gulbahar area on November 13.

Food supplies cut to militants in NW Pakistan
Pakistani troops have cut food supplies to pro-Taliban militants mounting an uprising in a northwestern valley, as they targeted rebel positions on Friday to flush them out of their strongholds, officials said. "All the checkposts set up on routes leading to militant (controlled) areas have been ordered not to allow any food items," said Major Amjad Iqbal, a military spokesman.

The food blockade comes as militants continued to put up fierce resistance with rockets and mortars against a fresh military push in the adjoining districts of Swat and Shangla. On Friday, police foiled a suspected suicide attack in Swat's Kabal town, firing on two militants heading towards a police station after they ignored signals to halt, the military said. "One individual got killed and the other, believed to be wearing a suicide belt, managed to escape from the scene," the military said in a statement posted on its official Web site.

Terror strikes UP; blasts hit courts in 3 big cities
New Delhi: Terror struck Uttar Pradesh on Friday, when serial blasts rocked courts in three cities across the state, killing at least 12 and injuring several others.

Official sources put the death toll at 5, though unofficially the death toll is close to 12. Of those, three were killed in Faizabad, seven others died in Varanasi and two people have been killed in Lucknow

A little-known outfit, called Indian Mujahideen, has claimed responsibility. UN intelligence agencies said senior UP police officials have received an email in which the outfit has owned up to the attacks.

The blasts occurred between 13:26 and 13:30 hours. The first blast occurred outside a court in Faizabad. The second blast hit outside a civil court in Lucknow.

And then two simultaneous blasts occurred within the district court campus in Varanasi. All the blasts occurred within four minutes of each other. The UP Government has termed these blasts as a planned terror attack.

Coalition Forces Target New York Times al-Qaeda Propaganda Cell
Coalition forces target al-Qaeda propaganda cell; seven detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained seven suspects Friday during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks southeast of Samarra.

In three coordinated operations, Coalition forces targeted al-Qaeda in Iraq's media network southeast of Samarra. One of the targeted buildings is believed to be used as a propaganda production facility and meeting location for senior leaders. Coalition forces detained seven suspects during the operations without incident.

"These operations are another step on the road to a peaceful Iraq, where innocent civilians can live without fear of terrorist attacks," said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. "Defeating al Qaeda's propaganda networks undermines their fundraising and recruiting."
Glad to see that recognized and effectively acted on.

Bomb Strikes Baghdad Pet Market; 13 Dead
BAGHDAD (AP) - A bomb exploded in a pet market in central Baghdad on Friday, killing at least 13 people and wounding dozens, Iraqi police said.
The blast occurred just before 9 a.m. at the al-Ghazl market, shattering the festive atmosphere as people strolled past the animal stalls.

It was the first attack against the popular weekly bazaar since a U.S.-Iraqi security plan aimed at quelling spiraling violence began in mid-February, underscoring warnings by senior American commanders that extremists still pose a threat to Iraq's fragile security despite a downturn in violence.

The explosives were hidden in a box that is commonly used to carry small animals, a police officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information.

At least 13 people were killed and nearly 60 wounded according to figures provided by police and hospital officials.

The Ghazl market, where sellers peddle birds, dogs, cats, sheep, goats and exotic animals such as snakes and monkeys, has been targeted in the past. On Jan. 26, a bomb hidden in a box of pigeons exploded as shoppers gathered around it, killing 15 people.

Friday's blast was particularly significant because it dealt a blow to an increased feeling of confidence among Iraqis about security gains that have contributed to a recent lull in violence.

The market had recently regained popularity after the lifting of a four-hour Friday driving ban to protect weekly prayer services from car bombings.

Abu Zainab, who owns a store near the market and about 150 yards away from the scene of the blast, said he had only reopened his business last week.

"I was reluctant to open it after lifting the curfew because of security concerns," he said.

"Today, the view of many young men coming with pets, colorful fish in aquariums and dogs was very encouraging and cheerful," he said. "There were also teenagers selling sandwiches and tea in wheeled carts giving the impression that life is back to normal again, but about 9 o'clock, we heard the sound of an explosion."

He described a scene of chaos, with birds flying into a sky filled with smoke and the bodies of young men who had been killed and wounded on the ground.

"We helped evacuating some of them, then the Iraqi police and army came and told us to evacuate the place because they feared another explosion could take place," he said.

Saudis make up 41% of foreign fighters in Iraq
More than 40% of the foreign fighters who entered Iraq to join the insurgency in the past year were citizens of Saudi Arabia, America's key partner in the Middle East, according to detailed information seized from a camp used by them. Documents and computers found by the US army at Sinjar, on the Iraqi-Syrian border, revealed that the other single largest group came from Libya, which is now being rehabilitated as a reliable western ally.
I wouldn't go that far, I'd say that they're being defanged ...
Overall, US officials reported that the number of foreign fighters entering Iraq this year dropped from 80-110 a month in the first half of the year to around 40 in October, partly due to the Sinjar raid.

After the raid the number of suicide bombings in Iraq fell to 16 in October - half the number seen during the summer months and down from a peak of 59 in March. US military officials believe that 90% of such bombings are by foreigners.

The captured data has been described as an intelligence treasure trove that included biographical details and the hometowns of the more than 700 fighters who entered Iraq since August 2006. Of those 307, or 41%, were Saudis and 137, or 18%, Libyans, senior US military sources told the New York Times.

Saudi Arabia, former home of Osama bin Laden and 15 of the 19 September 11 hijackers, has supposedly cracked down hard on al-Qaida in recent years. Saudi intelligence works closely with its US counterparts, but there have long been suspicions that the country's most dangerous jihadis have gone to Iraq. "The border with Iraq is apparently much more carefully controlled than it was 18 months ago," said one British official. The Saudis also run extensive programmes "re-educating" and rehabilitating fighters who have returned from Iraq or Afghanistan to see "the error of their ways".
To follow the Wahabi dictates in the future, and wage jihad only when told to do so ...
The US, Britain and others have praised the Saudis for their efforts, pointing especially to a recent appeal by the kingdom's grand mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz al-Asheik, who condemned "mischievous parties" who send young Saudis abroad to carry out "heinous acts which have no association with Islam whatsoever".

The presence of a large number of Libyans among the insurgents in Iraq suggests that the regime of Muammar Gadafy has pushed its violent Islamist enemies abroad, having cleaned up its own act by renouncing support for terrorism and surrendering its chemical and nuclear arsenal after the US invasion of Iraq.
Which is why we need to have a further 'conversation' with Q-man ...
The documents, found in September, showed that the third-largest source of foreign fighters was Yemen, with 68, followed by Algeria, 64, Morocco, 50, Tunisia, 38, Jordan, 14, Turkey, six, and Egypt, two. These figures seem to corroborate suggestions of a worrying increase in jihadi activity across north Africa, where armed groups from Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco have united under the banner of al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb.

Yeah, and there is a tooth fairy, Santa, and Easter bunny too. As the saying goes: "With friends such as this who needs enemies?" I only wish Saudis would clamp down as much on terrorism and AQ as they do on women, anything anti-islam, and other religions.

#6  So, in effect, we are at war with these bastards and have been for quite some time. Not only on the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan but also in the mosques of Europe and America. The only problem is our elites won't let anybody call it a war and they won't do what's needed to win the war because of the oil. Well, everybody has to have priorities. At what point will the elites decide that the priorities need to change? If I was the Soddy king I would give some serious thought to that question.

#7  A half-dozen LARGE nukes over Saudi Arabia would put an end to much of the mischief in the world - as long as it's coupled with about 20 in Iran. It would also send a clear message to the jihadis that if they mess with the West, they will cease to exist - as a nation, as a religion, as a people. It would also screw up the retirement plans of a lot of folks in Washington that nurse at the Saudi teat while claiming to be upstanding, patriotic Americans. It would also END the "war on terror" - what a stupid name! How about the War against Islamic Jihad?

#9  The key might be in finding what the Saudis think is a shameful way to die. For example, the Iraqis hang, but the Saudis behead, usually murderers and drug smugglers. Perhaps if the Iraqis took to beheading captured Saudi terrorists, it would click back home.

Secretary of Iraqi Interior Ministry shot dead northeast Baghdad
Unknown militants gunned down Secretary of the Iraqi Interior Ministry Captain Hassan Eidan Al-Maliki northeast Baghdad Wednesday evening. The gunmen on three cars ambushed the convoy of the senior official in Al-Gharir district, Al-Shaab city, northeast of the capital city, this evening, a police source said under condition of anonymity. Two of Captain Al-Maliki's companions were seriously injured in the attack and were hurried to Ibn Al-Nafis Hosiptal, the source added.

#1  OK, according to the CIA, the Minister of the Interior is one Jawad al-BULANI. The Prime Minister is the only al-Maliki in the cabinet.

Presumably this captain al-Maliki is some sort of assistant to the Minister of the Interior? I don't see any other hits for an Eidan al-Maliki or a Hassan al-Maliki except for the Prime Minister, who's listed as "Nouri Kamil Mohammad Hassan al-Maliki" whenever somebody's feeling verbose.

Of course, that doesn't mean anything, as the "Captain Jamal Hussein" incident should have illustrated to anyone paying attention. I'd guess that the deceased is some sort of distant kinsman to *the* al-Maliki with a nepotistic post in the Interior Ministry.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
IDF psychiatrist suspected of attempting to spy for Iran
I considired posting this under "Today's Idiot"
A psychiatrist who serves in the IDF reserves is suspected of offering classified information to foreign intelligence officials, including those from Iran, police announced Friday morning.

45-year-old David Shamir, ranked as major in the army, was indicted on severe charges of attempted espionage, contacts with a foreign agent and perverting the course of justice.

He was arrested by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) in cooperation with the Israel Police's Serious and International Crimes Unit on November 14, police said.

According to the prosecution, during his IDF reserve duty, the psychiatrist was exposed to classified material including emergency plans of the IDF Medical Corps, detailed plans for the deployment of medical units and control centers, procedures for providing psychiatric services to the home front during a war and tactics for evacuating civilians in the event of rocket attacks, as well as IDF intelligence and operations assessments.

The November 22 indictment served in the Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court asserts that "in April 2007, Shamir decided to provide information to hostile entities in exchange for money and he contacted the Iranian Foreign Ministry by electronic mail."

He allegedly introduced himself in the mail as a civilian and an Israeli officer "well tuned in to what goes on in Israel." Police said that during his interrogation, Shamir confessed that he told the Iranians he had widespread contacts with Israeli public figures and Israeli companies including those with security clearances.

The IDF psychiatrist purportedly expressed his willingness to cooperate with Iran, saying that he would be prepared "to provide further details." A few days later, he received a response by the Iranian officials but he didn't finalize an agreement with them, police said.

In addition, it is alleged that in August 2007, Shamir sent faxes from his home to the Iranian consulates in London and Turkey and, about a month ago, after receiving no responses, he faxed them again. Police said that after sending the faxes he destroyed them and saved the fax numbers to his cellular phone memory in order lessen the chances of detection.

Shamir told his interrogators that he was motivated by "greed."

Furthermore, on November 3, he allegedly turned to the Hamas-controlled al-Azhar University in the Gaza Strip where he introduced himself as an Israeli citizen interested in "joining the struggle." Police assert that he did this in order to create an opening for future cooperation between him and Hamas.

Shamir also allegedly wrote an anonymous e-mail to the Russian intelligence service, seeking clarification on its recruitment process and expressing willingness to join the organization.

Looks like the info he was offering included deployment plans - inviting attacks on medical control centers to ensure that the IDF could not respond to mass casualty events.

And then there's the "IDF intelligence and operations assessments" on offer.

Of course, I don't mean that as any form of mitigating circumstance, in this case.

In March 2003 the BBC broadcast an anti-Israel documentary on Vanunu titled "Israel's Secret Weapon".

It was so biased it led to the Israeli government stopping cooperation with the BBC.

Be interesting to see how the BBC handles Shamir. so far they have a neutral article on him. But maybe they'll find a way to turn him into a selfless hero, valiantly battling against the Israeli occupation.

Al-Aksa Martyrs claim responsibility of attacking Israeli targets
Palestinian armed factions on Thursday claimed responsibility for bombing Israeli targets at Sderot and Sofa.

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the military wing of Fatah, said in a statement today that one of its armed groups launched three (Yassir) missiles toward the town of Sderot southern Israel, adding that the missiles had directly hit its targets and the fighters had returned safe to bases. The statement said we dunnit and we're glad that the operation came in response to continued Israeli threats against Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Another Fatah armed group; Martyr Ahmad Abu Al-Reesh Brigades, also claimed responsibility of bombing Israeli Sofa military post with three home-made (Amr 2) missiles. The attack targeted the military site located in the city of Rafah, southern the Gaza Strip.

Unidentified group attack Hamas police jeep
A jeep belonging to Hamas-formed police force was remotely detonated by an explosive device early on Thursday, eyewitnesses told KUNA, adding that the blast was executed by an unidentified group. The attack that targeted the vehicle in al-Falougha area, west of Jabalia refugees' camp northern Gaza Strip resulted in no casualties, yet it damaged the car and nearby buildings, according to the eyewitnesses. Hamas, in statement issued today, accused the Fatah-run Palestinian Authority of being behind the attack, saying that Fatah "overlooking" the attack was a clear sign of its involvement. The statement pledged to "strike with an iron fist" those responsible of the bombing.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Lahoud stepping down at midnight
Lebanon's Presidential Spokesman Rafiq Shlala said President Emile Lahoud would step down and leave the palace at midnight. Shlala also said Lahoud will be making soon a decision regarding the security of the country Earlier in the day, Deputy Parliament Speaker Farid Makari warned the pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud against breaching the constitution, stressing that his sole constitutional duty is to go home.

Lahoud has previously suggested he might hand over his powers to General Michel Suleiman, the current army chief. It was not clear if this is the decision that Shlala was referring to. The March 14 coalition has earlier rejected such a step.
He went ahead anyway:
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon's outgoing President Emile Lahoud asked the army to take control of the country's security on Friday, after rival leaders failed to agree on his successor, creating a vacuum in the presidency from midnight. Lahoud said in a statement read on his behalf that "the dangers of a state of emergency" existed and entrusted "the army with the authority to maintain security." Lahoud considers the government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora as illegitimate.

According to Article 62 of the Lebanese constitution presidential powers pass to the government, in the event the parliament does not elect a new president before the term of the incumbent expires. Lahoud disputes the legitimacy of the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and has said he will take action before leaving office, without giving details.

#1  Lebanon's government rejected on Friday as unconstitutional a decision by outgoing President Emile Lahoud to hand over the country's security to the army, an official in Prime Minister Fuad Siniora's office told AFP.

"The statement issued by the general directorate of the president of the republic is not valid and is unconstitutional," the official said. "It is as if the statement was never issued," he said.

Just hours before his mandate was due to end at midnight Friday (2200 GMT), Lahoud's office said the outgoing president had handed over Lebanon's security to the army.
