Sorry. My bad.
We went down this morning and I was in bed so I didn't see it happen. I'm getting the new machine ready for its trip to Baltimore and the backup I was doing used up all our remaining disk space. I'll be more careful in the future.

That shouldn't happen with the new box. It's a Dell EMC with a Xeon processor, 32gb memory, a 6tb drive, and another 6tb for backup. Running under no load it's been steady as a rock, but we haven't had a bobble free swap yet. That will happen sometime after the election.

Dammit, Jim! I'm a programmer, not a hardware man!

#2  Thanks, Fred - missed my morning Rantburg fix until now.

Hopefully those 6TB drives are standard 5400 RPM Barracudas or something like it. I scored 8TB Seagate Ironwolf drives (7200 RPM) and I noticed two big differences between the two - the Ironwolf drives make a lot more noise and if they're dormant (mine shut down after 20 minutes of inactivity), they take a lot longer to spin up to speed.

Afghanistan
Deadly militant attack hits Afghanistan's Khost amid faltering 'peace' talks
[PRESSTV] A car kaboom has killed at least seven people and maimed 33, including police forces and civilians, in Afghanistan’s eastern Khost Province, as a new UN report says the ongoing 'peace' talks have failed to slow the civilian casualty toll.

The boom-mobileing targeted a police special forces compound in the city of Khost, near the border with Pakistain, on Tuesday morning.

Gunmen then entered the building and engaged security officers in shootouts, according to local authorities.

"The security forces destroyed another boom-mobile before it reached its target," Provincial Police Chief Daoud Tarakhel said, adding that "several security forces have been maimed in the attack."

He said that the attackers had been confined to one building and that other parts of the police special unit compound had been cleared of the assailants.

No group has yet grabbed credit for the attack.

Afghan Interior Ministry front man Tariq Arian announced that at least four assailants had been killed during the festivities and that efforts were underway to neutralize the remaining bad boys.

"This morning, forces of Evil blew up a vehicle loaded with explosives near a special police unit in the area of the former governor office of Khost Province. Four bad boyz were potted and efforts are underway to eliminate the other two terrorists," the Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement.

"In this incident, 16 soldiers and nine civilians were maimed, and two people were martyred," it said.

Khost Civil Hospital’s chief physician Sakhi Sardar said that the medical center had received 32 maimed soldiers and civilians — including women and kiddies — as well as the bodies of three people.

High-ranking Syrian militant commander killed in Karabakh
[ALMASDARNEWS] A high-ranking Syrian militant commander was reportedly killed in the ongoing conflict in the Karabakh region, opposition activists reported on Tuesday.

According to the reports, one of the highest ranking commanders of the Turkish-backed Hamza Division, Adel al-Shaher, who is known by the nom de guerre “Abu Shaher”, was reportedly killed recently while fighting for the Azerbaijani Armed Forces in the Karabakh region.

Al-Shaher took part in several battles over the years inside Syria, as he led the Hamza Division in the northern part of the country.

His death in the ongoing conflict in Karabakh will prove to be a major loss for the Hamza Division and for the Turkish-backed forces in Syria.

It should be noted that the Hamza Division is one of the largest factions inside the Turkish-backed “Syrian National Army” (SNA), which operations in the northern governorates of Syria.

Philadelphia police say 1,000 looters targeting businesses on second night of protests

[FoxNews] A second night of unrest in Philadelphia began Tuesday night over the police shooting death of a Black man, just as his children recalled memories of their father in front of news hounds and 1,000 looters reportedly began targeting businesses, police said.

Elsewhere in the city, looters ransacked a Foot Locker, Rite Aid and other retail stores. At least one vehicle was set on fire.

The Philadelphia Police Department warned people to avoid the Port Richmond area where at least 1,000 looters were ransacking businesses that included a Burlington Coat Factory, Target and Dollar General.

Other videos showed protesters confronting coppers. Around 91 people were arrested Monday and 30 officers were maimed amid violent mostly peaceful festivities.

Protesters gathered near a cop shoppe Tuesday night to demonstrate and were seen marching east, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Some jumped on top of a news truck and began chanting addressing the growing crowd.

The police department requested residents in several districts remain indoors, except when necessary.

"These areas are experiencing widespread demonstrations that have turned violent mostly peaceful with looting," a tweet from the city's Office of Emergency Management read.

The unrest comes after the police shooting death of Wallace on Monday afternoon in the middle of a street. The 27-year-old was armed with a knife and shot by two officers during a confrontation, police said. Authorities said he ignored repeated warnings to drop the weapon and charged toward the officers.

Neither officer has a Taser.

Officers had responded to Wallace's home twice before earlier in the day. A third call to first responders was meant for an ambulance to help him deal with a mental health crisis, a family attorney said Tuesday.

Ex-Private who served in Iraq is facing both local & federal charges for allegedly throwing explosive at law enforcement during BLM-antifa riot in Portland
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Following an FBI investigation, 23-year-old Ty John Fox, of Astoria, Ore., was charged with felony civil disorder, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon announced.

On Sept. 5, hundreds of Black Lives Matter and Antifa rioters descended on the Portland Police Bureau’s east precinct. Viral video recorded that night showed rioters throwing lit Molotov cocktails toward the line of police. Two people were set on fire and one person was taken to hospital for injuries. Amid the mayhem, a sergeant was struck and injured by a commercial-grade mortar firework.

According to the criminal complaint, Fox was recorded on video igniting a large, cylindrical firework with a torch lighter. He allegedly hurled the device from behind a line of protesters towards Portland Police and Oregon State troopers. An explosion and flash occurred moments later.

Nearly 60 people, including Fox, were arrested at the riot in a residential area of southeast Portland. Fox was charged with first-degree felony arson, third-degree escape, attempted assault and felony riot. He was let out on supervised pretrial release. The local felony arson and escape charges have been dropped by the Multnomah county district attorney. Fox’s arraignment for the local charges is set for Nov. 3.

Originally from St. George, Utah, Fox was once a member of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. He served in Iraq in 2017. It is unknown under what circumstances he was discharged from the military.

Fox made his initial appearance in federal court last Friday where he pleaded not guilty. He was arraigned and ordered released pending a two-day jury trial scheduled to begin on Dec. 29. A spokesman for the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office told The Oregonian that he expects the state charges to proceed as well.

India-Pakistan
A bomb at an Islamic seminary in Pakistan killed eight students, wounded 136
[INQUIRER] A powerful kaboom destroyed an Islamic seminary on the outskirts of the northwest Pak city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistain's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire...
on Tuesday morning, killing at least eight students and wounding 136 others, police and a hospital front man said.

The bombing happened as a prominent religious scholar during a special class was delivering a lecture about the teachings of Islam at the main hall of the Jamia Zubairia madrassa, said police officer Waqar Azim. He said initial investigations suggest the bomb went off minutes after someone left a bag at the madrassa.

TV footage showed the damaged main hall of the seminary, where the bombing took place. The hall was littered with broken glass and its carpet was stained with blood. Police said at least 5 kilograms (11 pounds) of explosives were used in the attack.

Several of the maimed students were at death's door, and hospital authorities feared the corpse count could climb further. Authorities said some seminary teachers and employees were also maimed in the bombing.

Initially police said the bombing killed and maimed children studying at the seminary but later revised their account to say that the students were in their mid-20s.

Shortly after the attack, residents rushed to the seminary to check up on their sons or relatives who were studying there. Many relatives were gathering at the city's main Lady Reading Hospital, where the dead and maimed students were brought by police in ambulances and other vehicles.
