Neil deGrasse Tyson warns asteroid could hit Earth day before election
[NYPOST] An asteroid with a diameter the size of a refrigerator could strike the Earth the day before the November election, according to celebrity scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson — but it’s not large enough to do any serious damage.The famed astrophysicist said the space rock, known as 2018VP1, is hurtling towards Earth at a speed of 25,000 miles per hour and may clip the planet on Nov. 2.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"It may buzz-cut Earth on Nov. 2, the day before the Presidential Election," he wrote on Instagram.

But he added that the flying object is nothing to lose sleep over since "it’s not big enough to cause harm."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"So if the World ends in 2020, it won’t be the fault of the Universe," he said.

NASA had previously identified the asteroid rocketing toward Earth, but put its chances of actually striking at less than 1 percent.

"It currently has a 0.41% chance of entering our planet’s atmosphere, but if it did, it would disintegrate due to its extremely small size," the space agency said.

China warns it will take Americans hostage if DOJ doesn’t drop charges against researchers
[NYPost] Beijing is threatening to take Americans in China hostage if the Department of Justice doesn’t drop its prosecution of several Chinese research scientists arrested on U.S. soil this year, according to a report on Saturday.

Chinese government officials have repeatedly warned their U.S. counterparts that Americans in China face being detained if its demands are not met, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The drastic action — dubbed "hostage diplomacy" — would be in retaliation for the arrests of at least five Chinese military-affiliated scholars visiting American universities to conduct research.

The scientists were charged with visa fraud for allegedly lying to U.S. immigration authorities about their active duty statuses with China’s People’s Liberation Army.

The nation first began issuing the warnings over the summer, after Chinese research scientist Juan Tang, who worked at the University of Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, Davis, was questioned by the FBI and took up residence for a month in China’s the Socialist paradise of San Francisco
...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964...
consulate.

Chinese officials vowed to retaliate if she wasn’t allowed to leave the consulate and return home, according to the report.

U.S. officials expected China to make good on the threat — but it didn’t, and the FBI arrested Tang in July when she left consulate grounds, the Journal reported.

Tang is currently out on bail after pleading not guilty to visa fraud charges. Her lawyer, Malcolm Segal, denied that China had sought to interfere in his client’s case.

At least four other researchers have been accused of hiding their ties to the Chinese military and pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
to similar charges.

The State Department ordered China in July to close its Houston consulate and told all Chinese military researchers remaining in the U.S. to leave.

Sources told the Journal the decision was made after U.S. officials said Chinese diplomats were coordinating with the scholars to collect cutting-edge scientific research from American universities.

A State Department front man declined to address China’s alleged threats but told the newspaper, "We warn U.S. citizens that business disputes, court orders to pay a settlement, or government investigations into both criminal and civil issues may result in an exit ban which will prohibit your departure from China until the issue is resolved."

"We are aware that the Chinese government has, in other instances, detained American, Canadian and other individuals without legal basis to retaliate against lawful prosecutions and to exert pressure on their governments, with a callous disregard of the individuals involved," said John Demers, head of the Justice Department’s national security division.

#8  It appears that The Lancet considers “metabolic risks”—obesity, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, to be aggravating factors for a higher covid mortality rate.
These Four factors which, we should all know by now, have a higher prevalence in wealthier countries, due to the human disposition in this current era for generally lazy overindulgent behaviour.

"As the Lancet editors note in an accompanying editorial, those statistics are also how COVID-19 turned the US into a country with one of the highest rates of infection and death in the world. "

These factors are at least elements of the equation, coupled with our aging population. Almost as troubling, apparently there is still no Wuhan 'deep dive', definitive explanation, white paper, or legal finding regarding the origins.

Evidently, if you are president of the local bank (hold the notes to all farm loans), owner of the factory, or superintendent of schools, draft deferments for your graduating senior can be more easily arranged. Same smell, little town-big town. Power and influence, money, and lots of it ?

#4  An invasion of Taiwan would require a D-Day level of effort. Taiwan is about as far from China as Normandy is from England, around 100 miles. Nasty channel to go through. Requires massive logistical support. Massive amount of sea lift capability (which China currently lacks).

In order for the invasion to have even a shot of working, not only will China need air superiority over the island (where the air forces are roughly parity when factoring in Taiwanese SAMs and MANPADs and modern western jets), but they will have to get almost 2.5 million men landed within 30 days before typhoon season hits. They simply don't have the capability to do so currently.

#8  I've never understood this constant drum banging. Any invasion of Taiwan just... wouldn't be worth it. You would have to destroy everything that makes Taiwan worth invading (the people, the cities, the infrastructure). I don't doubt that the Chinese are stupid enough to do that, but it just defies all sense. This is exactly what they did through 2019 in Hong Kong as well.
Posted by: Vernal Hatrick || 10/19/2020 15:15 Comments || Top||

#9  I've never understood this constant drum banging.

The CCP always goes into overdrive when Taiwan gives hints of abandoning the One China idea. Or when they are having issues domestically. Gives the people something to rally behind the CCP.

Both of these are happening now, along with the trade war with the US and the lack of dollar access for the CCP.

I don't think they will try to invade as right now it is a not even 50-50 shot at success. Maybe in 2024 with more sea lift ships built and a China friendly US administration. But I still think China won't really risk it unless they stand to lose significant face with Taiwan going full independent or an imminent collapse of their political power internally. Just isn't worth the risk. Although the CCP may be on very shaky ground right now and if Trump wins again, the April window where the weather is better in the channel may be go time. October is better if the CCP can hang on that long.

#11  "I've never understood this constant drum banging. Any invasion of Taiwan just... wouldn't be worth it."

As w/HKSAR, the CCP is playing to its 1.4 billion internal audience. The long range plan is to either assimilate (or replace) the current populations of TWN and HK..one way or another. In HK they've done through a slow (150/day) migration from the PRC over the course of the last 23 years. I suspect the TWN approach will be a bit more dynamic and shorter in length.

Amid historic absentee voting, rejected mail-in ballots could have 'significant effect' on outcome
[JustTheNews] Up to 3% of first-time mail-in voters see their ballots rejected, potentially upending projected vote totals.

Rejected mail-in ballots could play a decisive role in the 2020 election, with a small but critical number of dismissed ballots potentially flipping poll numbers on their head and handing President Trump another surprise victory Nov. 3.

Americans are voting by mail in record numbers in 2020, driven largely by months of public health warnings that due to COVID-19, Americans should avoid large gatherings, particularly indoor events, and should avoid touching commonly used surfaces or objects, inescapable realities of in-person polling locations.

Know Where Your Ammo Comes From!
[Guns America] In 1968, American troops in Vietnam reported scattered incidents where dead NVA soldiers were found with parts of their exploded rifles protruding from their skulls. Technical Intelligence attributed this to poor metallurgy and bad ammunition. The situation was a little more complicated than it appeared.

#1  interesting read. I would quibble with the assertion a 81MM mortar has no home self-defense use. Think big :-)

#2  81mm mortar would certainly help Antifa/BLM terrorists to pick another neighborhood.

#3  oops 82

#4  With its high trajectory, I can see a light mortar being useful in urban environments. Especially for home defense where you could make use of pre-sighted Target Reference Points.

#5  I thought this was going to be a story on Mexican and S. Korean ammo makers.
Posted by: Vespasian Ebboting9735 || 10/19/2020 12:45 Comments || Top||

#6  Only Mexican made ammo I have used is Aguila in my .38 Supper 1911s. I've had no problems with it. Next time I need .45 ACP I'll probably try theirs if the price is right...
Posted by: M. Murcek || 10/19/2020 13:22 Comments || Top||

#7  82mm mortars are Russian and Chinese. US uses 81mm mortars. So 81 is correct for the US.
Posted by: Silentbrick || 10/19/2020 13:49 Comments || Top||

#8  .. VC/NVA lots of times used 60mm - lighter and still a problem for US infantry, they wished for those to be issued - nice to shoot back easier

#9  I remember reading somewhere, perhaps in Ghost Soldiers, a briefing went something like, "If you have to use a knee mortar, do not fire it off of your knee!."

Despite pandemic, teens faring better with more sleep and family time: study
h/t Instapundit
[ChristianPost] While the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in declining mental health for many adults, teenagers, particularly those in two-parent households, have been faring better thanks to more sleep and spending more time with their families, according to a new report.

The new report, released Tuesday from the Institute for Family Studies and the Wheatley Institution of Brigham Young University, is titled Teens in Quarantine: Mental Health, Screen Time, and Family Connection.

#2  SD Unified has struggled with academic performance, decides that's unnecessary. Try and get into college, idiots

#3  We already have way too many people going to college and getting worthless BA degrees. I predict that eventually (maybe sooner rather than later with the covid virus) college enrollment will drop--which means less pressure in the K-12. What this all means for K-12 is less clear...but a lot of this stuff may wind up being irrelevant.

#5  I never could understand why school graded on a curve, just grade on mastering the subject matter.

Either one understand the subject or they don't, grade accordingly, not grade in comparison to other students.
Posted by: Seeking Cure For Ignorance || 10/19/2020 15:02 Comments || Top||

#6  Many foreign-born professors in our college math department graded on a curve because they didn't know how to teach, and failing 80-100% of the class might expose that fact.

#7  #6 - I had a professor like that in 1970 - wanted to give a third-year engineering class 20 F's and 10 D's. I did all the work before the first exam and got 42/100 - the class average. The next time I opened the book was the night before the second hour exam, and I got 40/100 - two points less than the class average.

The Dean got him to bump everyone up one grade - 20 C's and 10 D's. I got a C or a D, but made the Dean's list the next semester.

#8  After Patterson expressed concerns at this week’s meeting, the board will also review potential student disparities stemming from its zero-tolerance disciplinary policy on cheating in the coming weeks.

Eh, can you run that past me again? Are they going to allow cheating? Or perhaps allow it for only people of a certain skin color? (more likely)
