*Going back to the old heredity vs. environment debate: is Wagyu beef so tender because it's inherent to the breed, because they are locked into tiny stalls like veal calves, or because of daily massages from beautiful Japanese maidens? Do the Texas Wagyu cattle live under the same conditions, and is the result the same?

Old and busted: Jobs saved or created. New hotness: Jobs supported. In attempting to advance the argument for Barack Obamas new jobs stimulus plan, the White House has decided to create a new term that has, er, even less meaning than their previous measure:
The American Jobs Act Will Support Nearly 400,000 Education JobsPreventing Layoffs and Allowing Thousands More to Be Hired or Rehired: The Presidents plan will more than offset projected layoffs, providing support for nearly 400,000 education jobsenough for states to avoid harmful layoffs and rehire tens of thousands of teachers who lost their jobs over the past three years.
How exactly did the White House come up with its new metric? Chuck Blahous gives us a detailed analysis of exactly how they crafted this measure to be, well, unmeasurable:
To start the process of estimating educator jobs at risk, the Administration refers to a June, 2011 paper by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (a left-of-center think tank). This paper quantifies recent and projected shortfalls in state budgets.
The Administration then makes various assumptions about how the projected shortfalls would be filled. In effect, they assume first that shortfalls would be filled by a combination of tax increases and spending reductions, and then that spending cuts would be applied proportionally across all categories including education. As the Administration materials state, These spending reduction numbers were then converted into estimates of educator jobs at risk based on estimates of average teacher compensation by state. These calculations implied that, if spending reductions had their full negative impact on education staffing, up to 280,000 educator jobs across the country would be at risk in the 2011-2012 school year.
The Administration then points to $30 billion in spending contained in the proposed American Jobs Act. The purpose of this spending, as specified in the bill text, is to prevent teacher layoffs and support the creation of additional jobs in public early childhood, elementary, and secondary education in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years.
Does this give readers a sense of deja vu? The block grants in Porkulus also assumed that states would simply lay off teachers and first responders as a result of large-scale budget deficits in the throes of the Great Recession. Thats where jobs saved and created originated; Obama and his team meant public-sector employees in states and local governments. Only those organizations employ a lot more people than just teachers, police officers, and fire fighters; most states have vast bureaucracies that ended up getting saved thanks to the infusion of cash that allowed legislatures to put off tough decisions on the size and nature of government during the economic crisis.
President Obama placed a phone call to House Speaker John Boehner this afternoon to congratulate him on passing three free trade agreements through the House of Representatives Wednesday, but what started as a courtesy call ended with the two leaders disagreeing over job creation.
According to a read-out of the phone call provided by the office of the speaker, once the president and speaker finished exchanging niceties over the FTAs, Boehner respectfully challenged Obama for saying he had not yet seen a plan from Republicans to create jobs.
I want to make sure you have all the facts, the speaker told the president during a phone call that lasted about 10 minutes, according to the read-out.
The speaker then reminded the president that House Republicans put forth a Plan for Americas Job Creators in May, and recalled that he and other members of the GOP leadership team had spoken with Obama and his staff about the plan and theyd referred to it on numerous occasions, including in letters addressed to the president.
The speaker told the president that when he sent his jobs plan to the Hill, Republicans pledged to give it consideration, and have done so, the read-out stated. The president was reminded of a memo written by GOP leaders outlining the specific areas where they believe common ground can be found. The speaker also noted that a number of the presidents ideas have already been acted on in the House, including a veterans hiring bill, trade agreements, and a three percent withholding bill approved by the Ways & Means Committee today that will be considered on the House floor this month.
Boehner and Obama also discussed transportation and infrastructure, and the speaker expressed his desire to act on the issue, but to act in a fiscally-responsible way, the speakers office read out concluded.
Asked to comment Thursday evening, the White House would not provide details from the phone call, but reiterated that the president has not given up on his jobs package.
The president called speaker Boehner today to thank him for his efforts to help pass the three trade agreements, Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest said. We wont comment on their specific conversation. The president has been very clear that he is willing to work with Democrats and Republicans to pass measures to create jobs and get our economy moving. As independent economists have said, the American Jobs Act is the only plan that will create jobs and help the economy now.

The jobs package of tax cuts and spending initiatives could add 100,000 to 150,000 jobs a month over the next year, according to estimates from several of the countrys best-known forecasting firms; the potential Fed actions could add 15,000 more jobs a month over two years.
If I had a little more time, I would continue looking for some of these best-known forecasting firms. Someone else will have to investigate their campaign contributions and other connections to the White House.

On September 22, 2011, H.R. 3011 was introduced in the House. It is entitled the "Transportation Security Administration Authorization Act of 2011" and it contains some curious language.
Two thirds of the way through the ponderous bill, in Sec. 295, we find the following:
Whoever, except with the written permission of the Assistant Secretary for Transportation Security (or the Director of the Federal Air Marshal Service for issues involving the Federal Air Marshal Service), knowingly uses the words 'Transportation Security Administration', 'United States Transportation Security Administration', 'Federal Air Marshal Service', 'United States Federal Air Marshal Service', 'Federal Air Marshals', the initials 'T.S.A.', 'F.A.M.S.', 'F.A.M.', or any colorable imitation of such words or initials, or the likeness of a Transportation Security Administration or Federal Air Marshal Service badge, logo, or insignia on any item of apparel, in connection with any advertisement, circular, book, pamphlet, software, or other publication, or with any play, motion picture, broadcast, telecast, or other production, in a matter that is reasonably calculated to convey the impression that the wearer of the item of apparel is acting pursuant to the legal authority of the Transportation Security Administration or Federal Air Marshal Service, or to convey the impression that such advertisement, circular, book, pamphlet, software, or other publication, or such play, motion picture, broadcast, telecast, or other production, is approved, endorsed, or authorized by the Transportation Security Administration or Federal Air Marshal Service .(Emphasis added.)
In other words, if you print a t-shirt or produce a publication with a TSA logo, the government may soon be able to arrest and prosecute you.

Combine the explosive growth of this government agency, with the endless "enhancements", extra conditions, that they put on travel, at the same time their utter rejection of profiling, which works, and the complete disregard for either constitutional rights or focused enforcement, and the only conclusion that can be reached is that this agency must end.
1) It does not stop terrorists, as already has been noted.
2) Its authority was abused from the start against non-terrorist American citizens for petty offenses, or for no offenses, other than resistance to intrusive search of their persons.
3) It violates provision after provision of the US constitution in so many ways that it is irredeemable.

Funny thing is, it turns out Buffett was being... shall we say... disingenuous when he claimed his "leaders" never got around to asking for his "shared sacrifice." His company, Berkshire Hathaway, has been fighting the IRS tooth and nail to avoid paying its federal tax bill for nearly a decade.
How much of the State's rightful money has this hypocrite been clutching in a white-knuckled death grip? Oh, only about a billion dollars or so.
