My self-employed brother in Mass. had been paying a penalty for not signing up for Romneycare in that state. Last week he told me he doesn't have to pay a penalty any more - he's too poor.

Gov. Jerry Governor Moonbeam Brown ... those who ignore history are bound to repeat it ... took "emergency steps" Sunday to try to bring down record gas prices in the state.
He directed the Caliphornia Air Resources Board to increase the fuel supply by allowing the immediate sale and import of cheaper and more available winter-blend gasoline.
The move would reduce the price of gas in Caliphornia by 15 to 20 cents per gallon, probably within a few days, said energy expert Chris Faulkner of Dallas-based Breitling Oil and Gas.
"This would immediately increase the supply of gasoline in Caliphornia," Faulkner said, but he cautioned that it would take a few days for the governor's move to be reflected at the pump.
"Gas goes up quickly and comes down slowly," Faulkner said.
Winter-blend gasoline is a mixture that evaporates more quickly than gas sold in summer months. It's considered more detrimental to air quality during warm weather.
Winter-blend gasoline typically isn't sold until after Oct. 31.
"Gas prices in Caliphornia have risen to their highest levels ever, with unacceptable cost impacts on consumers and small businesses," Brown said in a statement.
"I am directing the Air Resources Board to immediately take whatever steps are necessary to allow an early transition to winter-blend gasoline."
On Sunday, gas prices hit a record average of $4.655 for a gallon of regular in Caliphornia. The national average is at $3.814.

The gas prices might turn the state light pink if they don't do something. Perhaps it won't change a lot of votes but it will suppress turnout for one team and increase it for the other which is the same effect. Thus Brown and Feinstein reacting quickly and blaming others.

If I were Mitt I'd play adds with the Obama energy secretary saying they might have to raise gas prices up to $4 to force people into greener ways or whatever he said. Just let his words do the talking, and then say you can judge a politician by those they surround themselves with. Boom. Let people fill in the rest themselves.

..a lot of people "can't" leave because they're stuck with property and mortgages that won't sale. Instead of allowing the banks and leading institutions fail and let the price of the paper float to its natural level, the peasants have literally been tied to the land to protect those institutions. Why is Jerry worried about high gas prices? When prices are high, people drive less. This leads to less air pollution, which is a good thing. He should stand firm and add additional taxes to make (poor) people drive even less.

Jerry is concerned with his job, legacy and party. He doesn't want to be the Gov that lost California to the republicans and i believe high gas prices are the one thing that could do that if not dealt with fast. We have tolerated high gas before but this is insane and at a time where consumers can lash out.
The regulators tightened the screws on the gas refineries to deliberately jack up prices. Higher prices = higher sales tax revenue. A short term way to generate extra cash to cover the budget deficit.
He could cut gas prices in half by mandating changes to the crazy crap multiple gas blend stuff, having six or seven different blends in one state, and with one or two blends, gas prices would drop like a rock but then so would the sales tax revenue.
Nothing is a coincidence, everything they do is carefully planned. They are very astute economists and this turmoil in our economy is deliberate.

Mitt needs to run a quick ad in Caliphornia showing the tape of Bambi declaring that "energy prices will necessarily skyrocket under my plan" - then show a couple of Cali gas stations' signs.
Make sure at least one of them is a brand name, not cut-rate.
Then, maybe, run the tape of Bambi saying "I'll have more flexibility after the election" if there's time.

Apparantly it extends the supply by up to 25%. We dont use the winter mix during summer because it causes a lot of engine knocking and pinging. Or so i am told.
The answer to combustion engine knocking noise led the GM scientists early 1920s to recommend adding a lead compound, tetraethyl lead, to gasoline. It will cost a bit more, but quiet down the engine and make it run more efficiently.
1975-1986
Leaded gasoline was phased out in the US from 1975-1986. Unleaded gasoline will cost a bit more (gotta get the lead out you know), but your car will run cleaner and more efficiently.

Summer-grade fuel has a different Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) than winter-grade fuel, which contributes to its being (marginally) more eco-friendly. RVP is the vapor pressure of gasoline measured at 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Fuels with higher RVP evaporate more easily than those with lower RVP. A particular fuel blend's RVP is based on the combined RVP of the ingredients that make up the blend. Regulators worry about this evaporation because it contributes to ozone formation.

I suspect engines run slightly hotter in the summer and that causes knocking and pinging but I'm guessing since my info on winter blend was third person and not my expertise.

I guess I'm wondering if there is winter mix stowed away, being tapped, and IIUC CA gasoline must originate in CA, if CA refinaries are currently on summer blend, will that make the buggering harder and dryer in a month or two - whenever the usual switch would take place?

You might think, if you were president of the United States, that it might be beneficial for this country to encourage these wealthy French businessmen to immigrate here. They would be France's loss and our gain. I mean, these are the kind of industrious, wealthy, entrepreneurial people who could help our economy much more so than millions of poor peasants from Third World countries and religious whackos from Pakistain. That would be logical, would it not?

Mitt Romney has effectively erased Barack Obamas lead in the polls after last weeks one-sided presidential debate, according to Pew Research.
Romney now leads Obama by 4% among likely voters, according to the newly release poll. Thats a 12-point turnaround from last month.
Among registered voters, Romney and Obama are now tied at 46%. Just a month earlier, Obama held a 9% lead over his Republican rival.
Fully 66% of registered voters say Romney did the better job in last Wednesdays debate, compared with just 20% who say Obama did better, Pew said in a release Monday. More generally, the poll finds Romneys supporters far more engaged in the campaign than they were in September. Fully 82% say they have given a lot of thought to the election, up from 73% in September.
The poll was conducted between October 4 and 7 and included 1,511 U.S. adults 1,201 of whom were registered voters and 1,112 who were likely voters.
Romney also achieved gains over the past month among women, white non-Hispanics and those younger than 50, Pew said. It noted that likely women voters are now evenly divided at 47% each for Obama and Romney, when last month, Obama led Romney by 18 points among women likely to vote.

The above (Roe vs Wade) may certainly be a major factor, but I believe the curse of the "old white man" is much in play as well. Decades of teevee viewing depicting caucasian men as bumbling, out of touch idiots, misogynists, and racists is taking it's toll. Deference to age and acquired knowlegdge in the digital age is definately in decline. Provided the battery is fully charged, all people need to know today can be found in the palm of their hand.

I think that was a factor before the debates. But after the debates the stodgy cheap banker Romney image and the competant cool Obama image were both crushed.
What we had was someone that looked like they could fix things and wanted to fix things against someone who wanted to be elsewhere.
Obama can't wait to be an ex-President but he thinks he needs 4 more years to cement in his legacy first. Thus mixed feelings. That's my read.
You really think there was a 12 point swing?
Or maybe, it's been there all along and the debate gave the pollsters their out to start talking real numbers to cover their asses and not be caught on election day with explaining why their numbers failed so miserably against the actual and real vote. Playing the 'bandwagon' propaganda machine for one party or the other only works till your credibility tanks royally. Staying in business has got to last beyond one day in November.

Roe V Wade won't be overturned. The battle has moved to the insistance/avoidance of ultrasounds. The ultrasounds are getting so clear these days that most people who see one no longer see lumps of tissue, they see a baby and the abortion option seems less desirable.
Shows how insane the dems are on the issue because they are fighting mandatory ultrasounds and still trying to be the champion of women. Unfortunately the right hasn't hammered them on that.
That's one way.
The other is what all the fight is over SCOTUS appointments. You change the composition of the courts, you reverse decisions.
Actually the original RvW written by Justice White stipulated three trimesters. The first of which the court said government had no say, the last of which it did [as premies were at the time viable] and said the middle third was a gray area [because of anticipated advances in medical science which was the basis for the position on the third]. The first step would be a return to the original decision.

He said Syria's rebels do not have the necessary weapons to battle Bashir al-Assad's troops and claimed Obama's handling of the crisis was emblematic of a president who does not "shape history" but opts to "lead from behind."
"In Syria, I will work with our partners to identify and organize those members of the opposition who share our values and ensure they obtain the arms they need to defeat Assad's tanks, helicopters, and fighter jets," Romney said.
But Romney stepped carefully, refusing to commit any future U.S. government to directly provide weapons to rebels.
Obama, worried that shoulder-fired missiles and other heavy weapons could end up in the hands of terrorists, has not provided arms for the rebel groups, although he has arranged for the delivery of communications equipment.
Romney acknowledged that Obama had had some foreign policy successes, notably the killing of chief terror suspect the late Osama bin Laden ... who is now neither a strong horse nor a weak horse, but a dead horse... , but said that the Democrat incumbent would not leave the world a safer place.
"But when we look at the Middle East today -- with Iran closer than ever to nuclear weapons capability... with violent cut-throats on the march, and with an American ambassador and three others dead (in Benghazi, Libya) likely at the hands of al-Qaeda affiliates -- it is clear that the risk of conflict in the region is higher now than when the president took office," he said.
The Republican nominee said he would keep Iran in check, chase hard boyz in Libya and impose conditions on U.S. aid to Egypt.
"I know the president hopes for a safer, freer and a more prosperous Middle East, allied with the United States. I share this hope. But hope is not a strategy," Romney said.
"It is time to change course in the Middle East," he stressed.
Romney put adversaries on notice that as president he would not tolerate the anti-American unrest that has been allowed to fester under Obama.

I dunno. The rebels seem to be having some success with their suicide bombers. That's one weapon these creeps always seem to use quite well.
Sorry, Mitt. I know you'll be better than Obama but I don't see the benefit of helping al Qaeda fight Assad and his Iranian puppet masters. As long as our two worst enemies are killing each other that's a win-win for us. Isn't it? Or would your weapons be carefully rationed so as to merely prolong the killing?
As for Iran, I can't help thinking it would be better to smack them directly and get it over with. Then, without Iran's meddling, the Syrians might be able to take care of themselves.

Bobby, they hardly have pay phones anymore. Besides, even if they did, they wouldn't work in the neighborhoods where the free cell phone recipients live. And the recipients 'need' a phone so they can call 911 - and of course, so they can be called with job offers after their interviews, and for their self-esteem.
