Sudan drops off Internet on 3rd day of riots
[CHRON] Sudan dropped almost completely off the Internet on Wednesday as riots over the lifting of fuel subsidies entered their third day and protesters battled security forces in the capital.

Renesys Corp., a company that maps the pathways of the Internet, said it could not confirm whether the blackout was government-orchestrated. But the outage recalls a similarly dramatic outage in Egypt, Sudan's neighbor, when authorities shut off Internet access during that country's 2011 uprising.

"It's either a government-directed thing or some very catastrophic technological failure that just happens to coincide with violent riots happening in the city," said senior analyst Doug Madory. He said it was almost a "total blackout."

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said it was alarmed by the reports of what seemed like an official attempt to stifle coverage, and called on the government to restore the country's connection.

In Khartoum, meanwhile, Sudanese security forces fired tear gas to disperse dozens of protesters who demonstrated and torched a cop shoppe in the north of the capital.

At least two people have died in three days of rioting over the lifting of fuel subsidies. Officials condemn the protests as acts of sabotage, describing them as "premeditated."

Wednesday's protests took place in several areas of Kadro district, 15 miles (25 kilometers) from the capital's city center, where protesters blocked roads using lengths of pipe and burning tires. They also attacked a cop shoppe.

The riots that began in the state of Gezira, south of Khartoum, have turned into a call for the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
, who has ruled the country for more than two decades. The rioting started after Sudan's government decided to lift the subsidies, immediately doubling prices of gasoline and fuel.

The semiofficial Sudan Media Center on Wednesday quoted Gezira governor Al-Zubair Bashir Taha as saying that aside from cop shoppes, riots there targeted power and gas stations, banks, shops and private property. Police are tracking down the "saboteurs," he said.

A day earlier, his deputy, Mohammed al-Kamil Fadallah said the civilians killed in violence in the regional capital of Wad Medani were a student and a bus driver in their early 20s.

The SMC also quoted the deputy head of the Sudanese parliament, Samiya Ahmed Mohammed, as saying she hopes the "opposition understands the measures with objectivity."

Sudan lost most of its main oil-producing territory when South Sudan broke off as an independent state in 2011.

An initial attempt by the government to cut subsidies sparked similar protests but they were quelled by a heavy crackdown on protesters, activists and journalists.

Heavy confrontations in the lower Juba and Shabelle regions of Somalia
[Shabelle] Heavy confrontations between Kenyan peacekeeping forces and Alshabab fighters occurred at the outskirts of Kismayu the capital of the lower Juba region.

The casualties caused by last night's heavy fighting is not yet known as Sierra Leon and Kenyan troops admitted frequent attacks launched by Alshabab fighters in Kismayu.

Other reports from the lower Shabelle region of Somalia confirm that a military base manned by AMISOM troops and government forces were attacked by heavily gunnies.

According to the officials of the region, a military base located at Shalaanbod town was attacked during the early hours of Wednesday morning by men believed to be among Alshabab fighters.

However the officials in the lower Shabelle region said that they were not in a position to release the figures of death and injury casualties caused by the attackers.

Recent theft of U.S. military equipment from Libya far worse than previously thought
The recent theft of massive amounts of highly sensitive U.S. military equipment from Libya is far worse than previously thought, with raiders swiping hundreds of weapons that are now in the hands of militia groups aligned with terror organizations and the Muslim Brotherhood. The equipment was used for training in Libya by U.S. Special Forces. The training team, which was funded by the Pentagon, has since been pulled, partly in response to the overnight raids last August.

According to State Department and military sources, dozens of highly armored vehicles called GMV's, provided by the United States, are now missing. The vehicles feature GPS navigation as well as various sets of weapon mounts and can be outfitted with smoke-grenade launchers. U.S. Special Forces undergo significant training to operate these vehicles. Fox News is told the vehicles provided to the Libyans are now gone. Along with the GMV's, hundreds of weapons are now missing, including roughly 100 Glock pistols and more than 100 M4 rifles. More disturbing, according to the sources, is that it seems almost every set of night-vision goggles has also been taken.

To make matters worse, the U.S.-developed training camp on the outskirts of Tripoli has now been taken over by one of these militia groups who are hoarding weapons, sources said. The worry is this camp, abandoned by U.S. trainers within the last month, is being used in preparation for an attack on the new Libyan government.

Meanwhile, special operators told Fox News that training camps throughout eastern Libya continue to train terrorists, and border controls right now around the country are non-existent in most areas.

Morocco Journalist Charged with Inciting 'Terrorism'
[An Nahar] Ali Anouzla, director of the Arabic version of independent news website Lakome, was placed in durance vile
You have the right to remain silent...
on September 17 after his website posted a link to the video attributed to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the jihadist network's North African affiliate.

Anouzla appeared before a judge at the court of appeal in Rabat on Tuesday evening, where the public prosecutor called for him to be investigated for "defending", providing "material assistance to," and "inciting terrorist acts", the prosecutor's office said.

He was then formally charged on the basis of those accusations, two of his lawyers said on Wednesday.

"He is being officially prosecuted and is now in jug," Omar Benjelloun told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Lakome described the charges as "surreal."

The journalist has been transferred to Sale prison, near Rabat, where prisoners convicted of terrorism offences are held, after being incarcerated
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
at a cop shoppe in Casablanca following his arrest.

Benjelloun said the judge has five months to complete the investigation, which will be conducted within the framework of Morocco's draconian anti-terrorist law.

Police arrested Anouzla, seizing computer equipment from his office, after a Lakome article carried a link to Spanish newspaper El Pais's website, where the al-Qaeda video had been posted.

The 41-minute video, entitled "Morocco: the kingdom of corruption and despotism", and which first appeared on the Internet on September 12, calls for jihad in the North African country and lashes out at King Mohamed VI.

Clashes at pro-Morsi student protests in Alexandria, Sharqiya
[Al Ahram] Violent festivities erupted Wednesday during protests supporting ousted president Mohamed Morsi at two universities in northern Egypt.

Clashes erupted at Zagazig University in Sharqiya when hundreds of Morsi supporters chanted against the military - which removed the Islamist president from power following mass protests in July -- prompting pro-military students to chant back against Morsi and his Moslem Brüderbund group.

According to state news agency MENA, five students were maimed during the festivities.

At Alexandria University, students at the faculty of arts clashed with a pro-Morsi protest, according to Al-Ahram's Arabic website. A number of students were maimed.

Tunisia says it foiled plot to divide country into three emirates
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Tunisian authorities have dismantled a plot by hard boy Salafi Mohammedans to slice up the North African country into three Islamic emirates, a top security official said Wednesday.

Security forces that have been battling al-Qaeda-linked hard boyz also disrupted jihadist plots in recent weeks to assassinate political figures and carry out bombings in central Tunisia and near the capital, Tunis, Interior Minister Lotfi Ben Jeddou said on Mosaique FM radio.

In the course of interrogating terror suspects rounded up in recent months, authorities uncovered a "plot aiming to divide up the country in three emirates - one in the north, another in the center, and the third in the south," said Ben Jeddou, who took up his post six months ago.

Since then, Ben Jeddou said he has tallied around 300 arrests in terrorism case files being prosecuted by investigating magistrates. Authorities, culling information from questioning of those suspects, now believe that about 30 alleged hard boyz are currently holed up in Tunisia's western mountains including Kamel Gadhgadhi, the man suspected of killing left-wing opposition politician Chokri Belaid in February.

Those in hiding are believed to be members of the banned al-Qaeda-linked hard boy group Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Tunisia and Yemen, with the Tunisian version currently most active...
h, Ben Jeddou said. Sixteen of them are believed to be in Mont Semmama, while the other 14 are said to be in Mont Chaambi - both near the western town of Kasserine, he said.

"We identified them all thanks to their jugged
Please don't kill me!
accomplices," he said. When it comes to Gadhgadhi, authorities "will surely end up catching (him) dead or alive."

The minister also said Tunisia's most famous Death Eater, Seifallah Ben Hassine, the founder of Ansar al-Shariah who is also known as Abu Yadh, is currently hiding in Libya - where he said the group has training camps, notably in the volatile city of Derna. Despite an international arrest warrant against him, Ben Jeddou acknowledged an unstable security situation in Libya has made apprehending him difficult.

Tunisia, now headed by an Islamist-led government, is struggling through a political transition nearly three years after the pro-democracy uprising that ousted long-time President-for-Life Zine El Abidine Ben Ali
...who departed by popular demand in January, 2011, precipitating the Arab Spring...
and set off the chain-reaction of Arab Spring uprisings across the Middle East.

The killings of Belaid and Mohammed Brahmi, a leading opposition figure who was bumped off on July 25, plunged Tunisia into its current crisis. Dozens of opposition politicians quit, freezing efforts to write a new constitution, and street protests and political paralysis have crippled the country. Ansar al-Shariah was allegedly behind both killings, as well as an assault last year on the U.S. Embassy in Tunis.

3 charged in NYC with fighting for al-Shabab terrorist group
[FOXNEWS] Three men facing federal terrorism charges in New York City have strong ties to the same bully boy Islamic group that's grabbed credit for the deadly attack on an upscale Kenyan shopping mall, U.S. authorities say.

Prosecutors in Brooklyn describe the defendants -- Ali Yasin Ahmed, Madhi Hashi and Mohamed Yusuf -- as "dangerous and influential" members of al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
who were part of an elite unit of jacket wallahs. They were captured in Africa last year while traveling to Yemen to team up with the Al Qaeda offshoot there.

The three had links to Al Qaeda operatives in East Africa "who sought to carry out attacks against the United States and Western interests in that region," prosecutors wrote in a letter filed on Sept. 18, three days before rampaging gunnies killed dozens in an attack on the Nairobi mall.

The men are also accused of having "substantial knowledge regarding an al-Shabaab research and development department that was developing chemical weapons for use."

Shortly after the FBI took custody of the men in November, they pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
in a sealed proceeding in federal court in Brooklyn to providing material support to al-Shabaab. The case has since been unsealed and Ahmed and Hashi were to appear Monday in court for a status conference.

All three men are from Somalia, authorities said. Ahmed, 27, and Yusuf, 29, have citizenship in Sweden and Hashi, 23, in Great Britannia

Militants attack dam, kill labourers in Pakistan
[Bangla Daily Star] Militants attacked an irrigation dam under construction in northwest Pakistain killing three workers and kidnapping at least two others, officials said on Wednesday.

Around a dozen gunnies attacked the Ghallanai dam site in Mohmand tribal district overnight.

Mohmand is one of the seven semi-autonomous tribal districts along the Afghan border -- an area that is rife with Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked bad boys.

The attackers planted an improvised bomb on the road leading to the dam, which hit a vehicle carrying labourers, killing at least three people.

Bombings and other attacks kill 25 across Iraq
[USATODAY] Militants assaulted a government building in northern Iraq and launched other attacks that killed 25 people Wednesday, the latest episode of deadly violence to hit the country, officials said.

The bloodiest incident was a brazen assault on the local council building in the northern town of Hawija. The attackers detonated three boom-mobiles before engaging security forces in an hour-long firefight, the commander of the army's 12th Division, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Khalaf told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named by telephone.

Khalaf said at least one of the boom-mobiles was driven by a suicide kaboomer. He put the corpse count at seven civilians and two soldiers in addition to 21 others maimed. Four bully boyz were killed while the rest fled, he added.

Hawija, a former bully boy stronghold, is about 150 miles north of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
. It was the site of a bloody April crackdown by security forces on a Sunni protest camp that set off the current surge of violence, in which over 4,000 people have died.

The attack came a day after security forces foiled an attempt by bully boyz to take over a Sunni town near the Syrian border. Eleven people were killed there, including six attackers.

Earlier in the day in Storied Baghdad's northern Shaab neighborhood, gunnies armed with weapons fitted with silencers broke into the house of an Interior Ministry employee, killing him, his wife, mother-in-law and three children, a police officer said. The children were aged three, six and eight years old, he added.

Police said they did not know the motive behind the killings, but bully boyz often target government officials and their families in a bid to undermine confidence in the government.

In another attack, gunnies ambushed off-duty soldiers traveling through the town of Taji, about 12 miles north of the Iraqi capital, opening fire on their car and killing two, another police officer said. Three others were maimed, he added.

At night, a bomb went kaboom! near a market in the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul, killing three people and wounding 23 others, said police.

And in Storied Baghdad, a boom-mobile blast on a commercial street in a western district killed five and maimed others, police said.

Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures for all attacks. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

NPA militants kill five in Mindanao
Communist militants killed one soldier and four pro-government militiamen in an attack at detachment in Misamis Oriental province in the southern Philippines.

Officials said New People’s Army militants raided the detachment in the village of Kibanban and killed the five men after overpowering them in the clash. The militants also went house to house and searched for weapons, and tied up the hands of villagers before escaping.

Villagers were mourning the deaths, who were actively engaged in peace activities in the town. Kibanban was dubbed as a “Village of Hope” in 2005 being a role model for strong cooperation between the military and the populace in its fight against insurgency.

Lt. Gen. Ricardo Rainier Cruz III, chief of the Eastern Mindanao Command, said, “They died as heroes; the AFP is mandated to protect the people in communities from the threats and intimidation. They have sacrificed much while promoting peace in that barangay."

He said the militant group was also responsible for another attack on a construction firm in Compostela Valley province where villagers risked their lives in an effort to prevent the NPA from burning heavy equipment. The militants called for reinforcement after angry villagers threw stones at them. A group of militants arrived and opened fire on the civilians, who managed to escape. The militants were allegedly demanding extortion money from the firm.

Syria rebels reject opposition coalition, call for Islamic leadership
[CA.NEWS.YAHOO] Powerful Syrian insurgent units have rejected the authority of the opposition Syrian National Coalition (SNC), badly damaging efforts by Western-backed political exiles to forge a moderate rebel military force on the ground.

Thirteen groups, including at least three previously considered part of the coalition's military wing, the Free Syrian Army (FSA), signed a statement calling for the opposition to President Bashar al-Assad to be reorganised under an Islamic framework and to be run only by groups fighting inside Syria.

The signatories range from hardliners such as the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham battalions to more moderate Islamist groups such as the Tawheed Brigade and Islam Brigade.

"These forces feel that all groups formed abroad without having returned to the country do not represent them, and they will not recognise them," said the statement read in an online video by Abdulaziz Salameh, the political leader of the Tawheed Brigade.

"Therefore the National Coalition and its transitional government led by Ahmad Tumeh do not represent them and will not be recognised," he said.

Western powers and their Gulf Arab allies had encouraged the SNC to lead a credible force within Syria under the FSA's banner and undercut Islamist militant groups piling into the conflict.

This effort to find a partner which the West and its allies could then back with weapons supplies could collapse if the rebel signatories hold their position - some groups have previously backed away from statements with hardline forces.

"If the statement proves to accurately represent the groups mentioned and they do not immediately fall apart again, it is a very big deal," wrote analyst Aron Lund on the blog Syria Comment.

"It represents the rebellion of a large part of the 'mainstream FSA' against its purported political leadership, and openly aligns these factions with more hardline Islamist forces."

CHRONIC INFIGHTING

Since the 2-1/2-year-old revolt against Assad began, Syria's opposition forces have been riven with factionalism and rivalries. There have also been tensions between Islamist groups and those that support a secular vision for a post-Assad Syria.

Charles Lister of IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre said the three moderate Islamist groups which signed the statement - the Tawheed Brigade, the Islam Brigade and Suqor al-Sham - had represented SNC's main rebel presence on the ground.

"The inclusion of the core of the SNC force...effectively depletes the SNC's armed wing, the Syrian Military Council," Lister said. "It is likely that the moderate Islamist coalition has ceased to exist as a single organisation structure."

Islamist forces grew in power as the Syrian conflict changed from peaceful protests into an armed insurgency after a fierce crackdown by Assad's forces. Militant groups, some linked to al Qaeda, have become even stronger in the ensuing civil war.

Many Islamist groups that do not share al Qaeda's ideology had maintained a pragmatic stance. But the statement indicates that Tawheed and others have closed ranks with hardliners on the ground rather than the Western- and Gulf-backed SNC abroad

#1  So who does Obama and the US Foreign Policy whizbofs support now ?

How about we send in American troops and give the Moslems "democracy". They will fall all over us with kisses and falfel. They will love us. They will thank us. They will all want to wear pastel sweaters and date blonds.

And always remember that the Religion of Peace is just as good as any other religion.....except the dirty Hebrews of course. And give Rouhani a pat on the ass.

Army Thwarts Nusra Front Scheme to Enter Lebanon
[An Nahar] The Lebanese army shot up dawn at a mini-bus transporting Syrians into the country through the Bekaa town of Arsal.

An army communique pointed out that the mini-bus "was trying to escape from a checkpoint set in the area despite being warned several times, prompting soldiers to open fire at it."

The statement added that "one passenger was killed and two others where lightly injured."

"The remaining passengers fled with one of the injured people while the driver turned him self in to the army."

Earlier, media reports said that the driver of the bus is from al-Braidy family.

According to the reports Syrians from al-Nusra Front were aboard the mini-bus.

#1  Here's the story
Of a lovely checkpoint
That was shooting up three most unlovely schmucks
One of them was killed, but the others
Had slightly better luck.

Here's the story
Of a man, al-Braidy
Who was driving men from the al-Nusra Front
In a bus at Arsal
Riding all together
Trying a cunning stunt

Until at dawn when the army met al-Braidy
And they shot his bus and almost ate his lunch
Lebanon is one big happy family
And that's why they gave al-Braidy a punch

Al-Braidy Bunch,
Al-Braidy Bunch,
Vroom vroom bang bang crunch crunch, al-Braidy Bunch

Two Clashes at Hizbullah Checkpoints in Baalbek, 2 Hurt
[An Nahar] Two people were maimed on Wednesday as a dispute between members of a political party and young men from the al-Solh family erupted into gunfire in Baalbek, state-run National News Agency reported.

It said the maimed were a Lebanese man and a Syrian man, adding that the army intervened and contained the situation.

Meanwhile,
...back at the argument, Jane reached into her purse for her .38...
LBCI television said a man from al-Solh family opened fire in the air after a verbal dispute with Hizbullah members manning a checkpoint in the Baalbek neighborhood of al-Sharawneh. The shooting did not cause any casualties according to the TV network.

In a separate incident, three members of al-Shiyyah family argued with Hizbullah men at a checkpoint in Baalbek, according to LBCI. A Syrian passerby was lightly injured as the dispute erupted into shooting in the air, LBCI said.

Around 1,000 army troops and security forces deployed Monday in Beirut's southern suburbs, assuming control of checkpoints set up by Hizbullah in the area.

The security points were established after boom-mobileings in the southern suburbs that killed 27 people on August 15 and maimed more than 50 on July 9.

Following the bombings, Hizbullah turned the southern suburbs into a fortress with guards in civilian clothes policing the streets, stopping and searching cars, and asking motorists for their identity cards.

Hizbullah has always kept a tight grip on its Dahieh stronghold, but its security apparatus became increasingly visible after the attacks, raising tensions.

There were multiple incidents with citizens and journalists at the checkpoints, and a clash at one with Paleostinian refugees earlier this month left one dead and four injured.

its owner.

"Real bills worth USD 100,000 and counterfeit notes estimated at USD 900,000 were confiscated," the state-run National News Agency detailed.

"The forces also confiscated instruments used for forging the bills."

The NNA pointed out: "Financial Prosecutor in Nabatieh Judge Ali Ibrahim ordered the raid and it was supervised by the chief of the General Security's Nabatieh dept., Captain Ali Halawi."

The shop's owner, M.J. Hoballah, was referred along with the confiscated items to the General Prosecution, according to the same source.
