-Lurid Crime Tales-
Today's Idiots
These twin beauzeaux must have gone so ape over a pair of monkeys that they're now accused of swiping them from a Nebraska home and bringing them to Florida.

On Monday, a woman from Nebraska contacted Officer Friendly to report that two of her apes were AWOL, reports the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

The woman reportedly had an inkling that two 20-year-old twin brothers -- Michael and Jacob Ruehlman -- had something to do with the pilfered primates, a pair of Gibbons monkeys.
"Pilfered Primates". That sounds like a run-of-the-mill Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego episode title.
A two states law investigation traced the abducted apes, along with the twins, to Fort Myers, according to the Sheriff's Office.

On Thursday, about 2:47 a.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that matched the description of the Ruehlmans' voiture, as the French say, the report said. Inside, deputies said, they found the two missing monkeys in a backseat cage.

The Gibbons were turned over to a sanctuary for safe-keeping until the investigation is completed, according tot [sic] the Sheriff's Office.

Jacob and Michael Ruehlman were read their rights and charged with dealing in stolen property, records show.

The twins are also facing charges from Florida wildlife officials for not having sufficient permits, as the Gibbons are not exactly common.

And Nebraska may also have some pending charges related to the monkey business.

UK Regulator Probing Alleged Bra Price-Fixing
[An Nahar] Britannia's retail regulator says it has evidence that an underwear maker and three department stores colluded to inflate the price of a popular sports bra.

The Office of Fair Trading says it is investigating whether DB Apparel U.K. entered into anti-competitive agreements with retailers John Lewis, Debenhams and House of Fraser between 2008 and 2011 over the Shock Absorber bra.

The regulator said its provisional view was that the manufacturer and the stores agreed on retail prices, in a "serious infringement of competition law."

The office's senior director of services, Ann Pope, said the agency would hear from the companies before making a final ruling.

The companies dispute the claims.

The Shock Absorber was once advertised by tennis player Anna Kournikova under the slogan: "Only the balls should bounce."

Friday and accused of installing a device on the bank's computer system made it possible to carry out the cyber theft.

Police said Michael Victor Harper and Lewis James Murphy were charged with conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation. Darius Bolder faces that charge and a charge of conspiracy to steal, while Tony Colston-Hayter is facing one count of conspiracy to steal.

The four will appear at London's Westminster Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Another fine game of Spot the Rich Guy. Will you help us play along?

From TFA:

George Soros, the 83-year-old billionaire investor, philanthropist and active supporter of liberal political causes, married health care and education consultant Tamiko Bolton on Saturday afternoon.

Soros and Bolton, 42, exchanged vows in a small ceremony at his Bedford, New York, estate, which Soros bought in 2003 from "Jurassic Park" author Michael Crichton. Federal judge Kimba Wood officiated at the non-denominational wedding, which was attended by members of the couple's families, including the groom's five children, a source familiar with the wedding told Reuters on Saturday.

Africa Subsaharan
Guinea Opposition Says Tuesday Vote 'Impossible'
[An Nahar] The Guinean opposition said Saturday that elections set for next week cannot go forward, citing anomalies in preparations for the vote in the west African nation.

"We have many corrections to make, both to the ballots and polling stations and in terms of duplications," said Sidya Toure, head of the Union of Republican Forces.

"We are working towards it, but as far as the opposition is concerned, it is impossible for the elections to be held (Tuesday) in these conditions," Toure, a former prime minister, told news hounds.

The corrections "unfortunately cannot be made so quickly," he said during a break in a meeting between a mediator and several opposition parties to discuss their grievances.

Participants include members of a committee that is monitoring a U.N.-mediated July 3 accord between the ruling party and the opposition setting terms for the vote.

An official of the opposition Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea, speaking to Agence La Belle France Presse, suggested the legislative polls be postponed to October 6 or 13.

Caribbean-Latin America
France Seizes 1.3 Tonnes of Cocaine from Venezuela
[An Nahar] French police have seized 1.3 tonnes of pure cocaine found on board an Air La Belle France cargo plane, Interior Minister Manuel Valls announced Saturday.

The drugs, seized on September 11, had been packed into 30 suitcases, Valls told a news conference in Nanterre, outside Gay Paree.

A source close to the investigation said the flight had originated in the Venezuelan capital Caracas, adding that the haul had a street value of some 200 million euros ($270 million).

It was the biggest drug seizure ever carried out in the Gay Paree region, Valls said, displaying the 30 empty suitcases that had contained the cocaine and were not linked to any of the passengers on the flight.

Valls said four tonnes of cocaine has been seized in La Belle France since the start of the year.

Venezuela seizes another asset: Toilet paper factory
[LATIMES] The government may be holding a clearance sale of sorts this weekend after adding a new asset to its portfolio of confiscated farms and factories: the nation's largest manufacturer of toilet paper.

The seizure of the plant owned by Manpa, short for Manufacturas de Papel, was announced in a social media message sent out by Vice President Jorge Arreaza on Friday and comes as Venezuela is plagued by scarcities of paper goods including disposable diapers and sanitary napkins, which Manpa also makes.

In the past, the government has taken over meat processing companies, rice farms and dairy concerns in reaction to what it said were high prices and hoarding. The Venezuelan government sets prices for basic food items and household goods, often at low levels that private concerns say leave no margin for profit.

Karlin Granadillo, superintendent of the price regulatory agency known as Sundecop, said in a statement over state-owned media that the National Guard would remain at the Manpa plant in La Hamaca, Aragua state, while the "temporary occupation" is carried out.

The aim of the takeover is to check Manpa operations for "possible diversion of distribution" and "illegal management," Granadillo said in her statement over the AVN official news agency.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea indefinitely postpones family reunion event with South
[Washington Post] North Korea on Saturday ordered the indefinite postponement of a planned six-day reunion event for families divided by the Korean War, quashing a humanitarian program that the South had hoped could spur at least modest cooperation on the peninsula.

The reunion, due to start Wednesday, was to have been the first arrangement in three years, bringing together about 100 people from each side at a mountain resort just north of the demilitarized border. In nearly all cases, those selected for the event were to see relatives -- siblings, spouses and children -- for the first time in six decades.

The North said Saturday that South Korean conservatives were leading a "vicious confrontation racket" unconducive to dialogue, according to a statement carried by its state-run news agency
...and if you can't believe the state-run news agency who can you believe?...
and attributed to the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea.

Pyongyang routinely makes such accusations. In this case, the North cited as evidence the recent arrest of a leftist South Korean politician accused of plotting a pro-North rebellion. The politician, Lee Seok-ki, in turn, has accused the South's spy agency of leading an anti-communist "witch hunt."

Still, top South Korean officials have spent recent weeks advocating closer ties with Pyongyang -- provided the North's third-generation leader, Kim Pudge Jong-un

BlackBerry Co-Founder in Talks about Joint Bid
[An Nahar] One of BlackBerry's co-founders has held talks with private equity firms about making a joint bid for the struggling Canadian smartphone maker, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

Former Blackberry co-CEO Mike Lazaridis has talked to firms including Blackstone Group LP and Carlyle Group LP, the paper said. It quoted people familiar with the matter.

The report came just a day after Blackberry said it would cut 4,500 jobs, or 40 percent of its workforce, in the face of hefty losses and weak sales of its new handsets.

Lazaridis and co-founder Jim Balsillie handed over the reins of the company in January 2012 under pressure from shareholders unhappy with the company's performance.

News of the layoffs show BlackBerry's efforts at reviving its fortunes are a stunning failure and push the once high-flying firm one step closer to extinction, analysts said.

BlackBerry said it expects a loss of $950 to $995 million (700 million to 735 million euros) in the second quarter mostly due to writedowns linked to poor sales of its Z10 smartphone, the device aimed at competing against Apple and Android devices.

The company's highly-publicized launch of the BlackBerry 10 platform earlier this year failed to ignite sales. The company has said it is examining "strategic alternatives," including a possible sale of the company.

#4  Merkel's victory might turn out to be pyrrhic victory.

The majority to voter's did vote for non-leftist, liberal (European sense) / conservative parties.

In parliament however there's a thin majority of Social Democrats, Communist Part of East Germany and Greens, according to current prognoses.

A lower percentage of voters voted for leftist parties compared to the previous election but leftist representation in parliament actually increased.

This is because 2 lib/conservative parties commanding 8%-10% of the vote together are not represented at all.

Merkel will move have to move to the left. In fact precisely because they're relatively weak the Social Democrats will have to extract huge concessions from Merkel. They're too weak to be generous.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Merkel was actually unable to form a coalition after this election.

India-Pakistan
Bilawal, now 25, 'keen' to enter active politics
[Dawn] Now eligible to contest general election after turning 25 on Saturday (today), PPP patron-in-chief Bilawal Bhutto is reportedly keen to jump into the political arena unlike his father and former president Asif Ali Zardari's statement that the scion of the Bhuttos is more interested in following higher studies at present.

But the million dollar question is whether he will be able or allowed to run the party after formally entering the political arena?

Bilawal has completed his graduation (honours) in Contemporary History and International Politics from the Oxford University. These days he is learning the Urdu and Sindhi languages and spends his time in London, Dubai and Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
.

The PPP has given no timeframe when Bilawal would take the party's rein. Mr Zardari had told journalists the other day that his son wanted to pursue further studies before entering practical politics. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
Bilawal's secretary Hasham Shiekh told Dawn on Friday that Mr Bilawal had completed his studies and at present he was keen to take part in active politics. "Mr Bilawal will fill the communication gap with the party workers in days to come," he said.

Bilawal had not headed the May election campaign despite calls from the PPP candidates, especially in Punjab, to address their rallies triggering rumours that he had developed differences with his father and aunt Faryal Talpur over running the party affairs. The PPP quarters concerned had denied such reports.

Still some PPP leaders believe that Bilawal will have no role in politics and party affairs for another five years or so. "Mr Zardari will run the party and Bilawal will be groomed further," a PPP leader from central Punjab told Dawn.

Pakistan Busts Facebook Kidnap Gang
[An Nahar] Pak authorities on Saturday busted a gang using a female member to lure youngsters through Facebook and telephone calls and then kidnapping them for ransom, police said.

The gang, which included a lawyer, his wife, the son of a policeman and four others, was active in the industrial town of Gujranwala in central Punjab province and was traced by tracking phone calls.

"This gang of friends was using their female member to trap youngsters on Facebook and through phone calls," Shoaib Khurram, a senior police official, told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"The girl was assigned to trap targeted young boys in fake love on Facebook and phone and then invite them for dates," he said, adding that the other members would kidnap the boys when they came to meet her.

"So far, we have got verification about two boys who were trapped in fake love of this lady and were then kidnapped by this gang. Their families later paid ransom amounts worth millions of rupees to get them free," he said.

Pakistain earlier this month cracked down on "immoral" love chat services offered by mobile phone companies, stifling hopes of illicit romance in the conservative Mohammedan country, where dating is frowned upon.

Demand for US-born imams up in American mosques
[Al Ahram] The demand for American-born Moslem religious leaders is skyrocketing as mosques struggle to retain a new generation of American Moslems who were born and raised in the United States.

Imams who are born and raised in the U.S. and have completed intensive Islamic studies can command top dollar -- up to $100,000, plus housing, in some instances -- because they are so rare.

Meanwhile,
...back at the precinct house, Sergeant Maloney wasn't buying it. It was just too pat. The whole thing smelled phony, kind of like a dead mackeral but without the scales...
mosques are working hard to come up with ways to make Islam relevant to the teenagers who are the children and grandchildren of the immigrants who brought the faith to the U.S. decades ago.

A 2011 survey of American Moslems found that 85 percent of fulltime, paid imams working in American mosques were foreign-born despite a boom in American mosques.
