Russia, started moving forces out of Kharkiv 8 days ago. Yes, before the offensive. Ukraine didn’t get success, they took mostly deserted outposts with roughly the same quantity of forces deployed in the south, that was defeated easily.
Why would Russia hand Ukraine a victory? Because they had to. The largest attack is yet to come, and it is aimed at Mariupol. Ukraine won’t push past the river in the north, and if they try they’ll be decimated.
Attacks on energy are to depower the train lines from Kharkiv, so all those forces and equipment can’t be transferred quickly to the Mariupol front. We know this is definitely happening due to large concentrations of forces, and Ukraine starting a demining process. Russia is now systematically destroying train loads of tanks trapped on depowered trains.
The grand battle will happen in the next 48 hours.
Since the counter offensive few day ago began, Ukraine has over 35,000 casualties, with half of those deaths. Most of the injured will die, or never return to battle. All most all casualties are the results of airstrikes or artillery.

Information changes by the hour. Ukrainian theater supported by western media is mass psyops on a scale as bad as the Biden media activities. As I recall a couple of days ago Russian military had a meeting that I believe the last day or two are the result. Ukrainians are over extended and most well trained troops have been used up mostly in their advance. Russians have been kept back from the festivities and were using Local militias to do the direct work. Mass graves are a Ukrainian method and they do deliberately fake information implicating Russians. Air and artillery are the main activity of Russians at a distance. Russia has held back. They didn't want a full scale war but rather a slow long protracted wearing down of Ukrainian military and equipment sent in. I say the media celebrations are too early. This is just the beginning. With winter coming the Russians will continue knowing Ukrainian winter outfits and supplies are a small fraction of what they need. Then the west will continue to dump money and resources to be be squandered.
Big mistake. Vlad was never a warfighter. He's a law grad who was good at exploiting the structural weaknesses of other societies, and trained in one rather narrow aspect of influence projection. Espionage. And that too by the KGB. He should have known he was going up against all NATO with their MICs.
Frankly, I don't know why I expected a swift victory. It's obvious now his nuke bluff was just that. And that ever present fear of being satanized forever. It's in everyone now. Makes mice out of men.

Russia gambled that Europe wouldn't put themselves into hardship if they tried to punish them for the war. That gamble has failed.

Not much, unfortunately. In this case I think Occam's razor is the best approach. Russia's military is a spent force. It is in dire need of refit, reorganization and replenishment.
Putie-pie shot his wad trying to capture Kiev and lost a good chunk of his professional and "well-trained", "well-equipped" (at least by Russian standards) troops. The rest were ground down in the south and after 200 days of fighting are done. All he has left is unexperienced and unmotivated Pvt. Conscriptavich that take huge losses, but few gains. Russia is still throwing them at the Ukrainians in the south and they are still dying and not gaining much.
Russia's military needs a good 3-6 months before it can try another large scale offensive. By that time it will be winter/spring.

I seriously hope Putin isn't that stupid but again, if he tries to use them, say 7-10 and 50% of them fail, Russia is going to look WAY worse than just using nukes alone.
I suspect he won't risk it. They really are the last /credible/ threat he's got. If he tries and they show a high failure rate, NOTHING keeps China from nibbling off parts.

If you're low on fuel, as opposed to just dry, then at least there are a few miles you won't be putting on your sore feet. In that context, five or fifteen miles is a big, big distance.
Loved "Up Front". A soldier walking down the road isn't exactly invisible, either, as opposed to being in a hole. And the guy walking is vulnerable to a lot more of what's available in a mixed-up battlefield situation.
So either the report overgeneralizes the situation, or the tanks and other vehicles in question all crapped out, including refueling vehicles, more or less at the same time. Even in the Russian army, such timing is unlikely, so maybe the resupply lines were cut pretty hard.

One reason to abandon a functioning tank is that when you catch up with any organized force they are going to refuel you and put you back in the line. A few stray tank crew on foot can lose themselves a lot more effectively.
I'm guessing the quotes come from "The Beast", an exciting flick about a Russian tank crew in Afghanistan being hunted by the muj after becoming separated from their unit.

Some Ukrainian columns have gotten behind the final lines in Donetsk. They slipped through some gaps. Yes the offensive wias in Kharkiv and Luhansk but they took advantages where they saw them.
It's raining like hell the last 2 days in the area so who knows what's really going on. Late last night the biggest headache Ukraine had was what to do with the massive numbers of troops they had captured. They were not prepared for the numbers of POWs they took.

But the Ukrainians are also doing far more than probing into Luhansk & even Donetsk. It appears the "Luhansk Republic" (that's the legal fiction the Russians concocted to justify parts of their invasion) has collapsed. No surprise considering it was completely run by Russians.

Russian forces are not conducting a controlled withdrawal and are hurriedly fleeing southeastern Kharkiv Oblast to escape encirclement around Izyum. Russian forces have previously weakened the northern Donbas axis by redeploying units from this area to Southern Ukraine, complicating efforts to slow the Ukrainian advance or at minimum deploy a covering force for the retreat. Ukrainian gains are not confined to the Izyum area; Ukrainian forces reportedly captured Velikiy Burluk on September 10, which would place Ukrainian forces within 15 kilometers of the international border. Ukrainian forces have penetrated Russian lines to a depth of up to 70 kilometers in some places and captured over 3,000 square kilometers of territory in the past five days since September 6 – more territory than Russian forces have captured in all their operations since April.

They have little supply, get literally cut in half by smart ammunition and there is no reserves in the north east. Everything is in east or south. No way to defend meaningful.
This costs gear (hundreds of tanks and BMPs), men (2500 KIA, 12000k captured) and moral everywhere.
I think that remains to be seen. How much momentum does ukr have - not enough to march on moscow. To me, things look more like a strategic retreat than a route. So with that, I think it depends on how you play defense. Does RUS see it as an advantage to remain bogged down in the ukr cities? Or is there an advantage in moving their assets to country side where they will be more mobile?
I believe the latter is more advantageous as iirc the moguls had great success in not occupying european cities on the steppe as it allowed them to use mobility on flat terrain to their advantage.
It follows that the true test will be if UKR can hold the ground they gained. I think to do so, to hold the cities, they will be exposed to air-ground and artillery fire.
So does ukr have momentum to invade RUS, no. So the question will be, can they hold their gains. And as i started, it remains to be seen - we shall see.

I take this with an appropriate grain of salt, but the guy who has taken over the "Oryx List" here reports 102 pieces of Russian heavy equipment destroyed or captured (mainly captured) just yesterday, enough to equip a Ukrainian armored brigade. That seems to me to be more consistent with a "feets don't fail me now" evolution than with a tactical withdrawal. But I ain't there.

[ColonelCassad] The morning began with getting acquainted with the reports. Balakleya was already surrounded. There were battles near Kupyansk. It was known that the guys blocked the entire city. There was no other information.
At about 12 o'clock I managed to talk to one of the officers who left Balakleya. I intercepted him at the checkpoint. He said that the units were holding out, but strongly advised against going there.
Information came about a breakthrough in the Grokhovatka area and in the Senkovo area. The assault units of the 60th Motorized Rifle Brigade "Veterans" immediately moved there. They managed to block about 60 fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine together with equipment in Grokhovatka.
In Senkovo, "veterans" blocked the bridge over the reservoir in order not to let the APU-nis.
In the meantime, an officer from the army rushed from Kupyansk, I don’t remember the unit. On the way, he fought twice with the Vsu-shki, who blocked the road between Kupyansk and Izyum. He fought back and reached Izyum in a car riddled with bullets.
At two o'clock in the afternoon, the alignment is as follows. The withdrawal of fighters from positions began. This maneuver was technically the most difficult. The trenches are under constant fire pressure from the enemy.
