Caribbean-Latin America
The 1970's Colombian "Queen of Cocaine" Murdered
[Fox News] Griselda Blanco, Colombia's infamous "queen of cocaine" of the 1970s, was murdered in the northwestern city of Medellin, police said.

Blanco, who spent two decades behind bars in the United States, was bumped off on Monday as she left a butcher shop in the western section of Medellin, the capital of Antioquia province.

The 69-year-old Blanco was shot twice in the head outside the shop in the Belen neighborhood by a hitman who sped away on a cycle of violence.

She was with her pregnant daughter-in-law, who was not hurt in the shooting, police spokesmen said.

Blanco began smuggling cocaine into the United States before the rise of the Medellin cartel, led by Pablo Escobar and Carlos Lehder, and the Cali cartel, which was founded by brothers Miguel and Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela, officials said.

Blanco came up with the idea of "exporting cocaine" to the United States and was known for not hesitating to kill anyone, including one of her husbands, who got in her way.

The narco, who was also known as "The Godmother," was a pioneer in establishing smuggling routes from Colombia into the United States.

Blanco was convicted of conspiracy to smuggle cocaine into the United States in 1985, served two decades in prison and was deported to Colombia in 2004.

The former narco kept a low profile since returning to Colombia despite once being considered one of the wealthiest women in the world.

Colombia Rebel Chief Confirms Peace Talks with Govt.
[An Nahar] Colombia is on course for another try at ending Latin America's last armed conflict, with confirmation Monday from the FARC leftist rebel leader that preliminary talks have taken place with the government on launching a full-blown grinding of the peace processor.

"We come to the table for dialogue without rancor, or arrogance," FARC leader Rodrigo Londono said in a broadcast on the Caracol radio station.

It was the first comment from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia
FARC or FARC-EP, is either a Marxist-Leninist revolutionary guerrilla organization or a narco mob based in Colombia. It claims to represent the rural poor in a struggle against Colombia's wealthier classes, and opposes United States influence in Colombia, neo-imperialism, monopolization of natural resources by multinational corporations, and the usual raft of complaints. It funds itself principally through ransom kidnappings, taxation of the drug trade, extortion, shakedowns, and donations. It has lately begun calling itself Bolivarian and is greatly admired by Venezuela's President-for-Life Chavez, who seemingly fantasizes about living in the woods and kidnapping people himself. He provides FARC with safe areas along the border.
, Latin America's oldest guerrilla army, since the announcement a week ago by President Santos of preliminary talks to pave the way for ending a conflict that has ground on for nearly 50 years.

Londono gave no other details. Caracol said the statement was the audio portion of a video posted on the FARC website, which was down on Monday morning.

The video includes footage of young fighters singing a rap song in favor of dialogue with the government, Caracol said.

Colombian press reports said full blown peace talks are due to begin in October, first in Norway and then continuing in Cuba.

The discussions would likely address issues such as distributing land to peasants, rebels' links to drug trafficking and the idea of reincorporating guerrilla leaders into everyday life -- many of them have been convicted of crimes against humanity, so this is a sensitive point.

The president said in his announcement that the government would not cease military operations against the FARC or reduce their presence nationwide while contacts were underway.

But some in Colombia say a ceasefire is necessary as a confidence-building measure for any peace talks to yield fruit.

Founded in 1964, the FARC are Colombia's oldest rebel group and draw their roots from anger among landless peasants in a country with a gaping divide between rich and poor.

The FARC now have about 9,200 fighters, down by half over the past decade after a series of military successes by the army, and have been driven largely into rural areas.

Colombia has seen peace talks come and go before, three times since the 1980s. The last attempt was in 2002.

The government broke those negotiations off because it said a vast area it set up as a demilitarized zone for the FARC was used by them to regroup and rebuild.

President Santos said this past weekend a long haul again lies ahead.

"Peace does not come overnight. It must be sown and nurtured," he said.

Colombian media said Sunday that the preliminary talks took place in Venezuela and Havana, and produced a six-point negotiating agenda.

Santos is half-way through a four year-term. When announcing the fledgling talks he said peace was a priority for him.

"Since the day my government took office, I have respected my constitutional obligation to seek peace, and we have undertaken exploratory talks with the FARC, to seek an end to the conflict," Santos said in a speech to the nation on August 27.

The Grand Turk
30 dead as Kurdish rebels clash with Turkish forces
Kurdish rebels wielding rocket launchers and machine-guns attacked a security base in southeast Turkey, triggering a firefight that left 30 people dead, local officials said Monday. Ten soldiers were killed and seven wounded in the attack in the province of Sirnak, the local government said, while other sources said about 20 members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were also killed.

Provincial governor Vahdettin Ozkan said the militants had attacked the security complex at Beytussebap, which lies about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Iraqi border, late Sunday. Police and soldiers returned fire, triggering some of the deadliest clashes with the rebels seen in months.

‘The fight against terrorism will continue in all its aspects,’ Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said in televised remarks.

In another incident in the southeast late Sunday, clashes erupted when rebels refused to heed police calls to stop at a checkpoint on a highway in the province of Sanliurfa and instead shot at police, NTV television reported. Three members of the security forces and one civilian were wounded, along with one Kurdish rebel in the fighting in the province which borders Syria, according to the private television station.

Rebels in the vehicle attempted to run away flee the scene but were blocked by security forces, and one left the car and blew himself up, NTV said. It said police had received tip-offs that Kurdish suicide bombers had infiltrated from neighbouring Syria for attacks inside Turkey.
Suggesting that the Syrian Kurds are allowing the PKK to use their territory as sanctuary. That's gonna upset the Turks no end...

When he switched on his phone again, he received a text message which stated: "You are under observation and on our hit list."

Later, Dawn spoke to SSP Operation Dr Akhtar Abbas who said the device had a detonator and was not timed.

When enquired whether the TTP was active in Rawalpindi, he replied: "Right now there seem to be no links between the Peshawar Road incident and today's incident. However,

matters are still being investigated by the police."

He said the police had questioned certain suspicious people residing around the farm house.

UNICEF says 1,600 killed in Syria last week
BEIRUT: At least 1,600 people were killed last week in Syria in the deadliest seven days since the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in March 2011, the UN children's fund UNICEF said Sunday.

The watchdog Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said August marked the bloodiest month, with at least 5,440 people killed. According to the Observatory, at least 26,283 people have been killed in Syria since the revolt began in March last year -- 18,695 civilians, 1,079 defectors and 6,509 troops.

The toll does not account for thousands of people missing in Syria's jails, said Rami Abdel Rahman, the Observatory's director.

Last week, activists reported that between 300 and 600 people were killed in the Damascus suburb of Daraya during days of shelling.

Syria army destroys houses in “collective punishment“
AMMAN: Syrian army bulldozers razed houses in western Damascus on Monday, pursuing what activists called the first campaign of collective punishment targeting people’s property in areas of the capital hostile to President Bashar Assad.

Bulldozers backed by combat troops demolished buildings in the poor Tawahin district, near the Damascus-Beirut highway, activists and residents said.

“They started three hours ago. The bulldozers are bringing down shops and houses. The inhabitants are in the streets,” said a woman who lives in a high-rise building overlooking the area.

“This is an unprovoked act of collective punishment. The rebels had left, there are no longer even demonstrations in the area,” said Mouaz Al-Shami, a campaigner collecting video documentation of the demolitions.

“The regime can’t stop itself from repeating the brutality of the 1980s,” he said, alluding to mass killings and wholesale destruction in the city of Hama in 1982 under Assad’s father, the late Hafez Assad, who ruled Syria for 30 years.

“The regime has not changed. It will not,” Shami said.

Activists also reported the razing or burning of at least 200 houses and shops in the old part of the southern city of Daraa in the past few days. Army shelling had largely emptied the area, prompting 40,000 people to flee to Jordan.

Opposition campaigner Rami Al-Sayyed said: “This the first time we see a systematic campaign to raze houses and shops using direct means like bulldozers that seems to be concentrating on Damascus and its environs.”

Bulldozers entered the Khashabeh area of the northern Damascus suburb of Harasta on Monday and began razing houses in the neighborhood. The latest wave of demolitions follows the destruction of dozens of buildings in an area next to Tawahin in Damascus on Sunday and in the Sunni district of Qaboun last month.

“I visited Qaboun yesterday. It is no longer a dense neighborhood. I could see from one end of the neighborhood to the other because so many buildings have been razed,” said another Damascus activist who gave her name only as Yasmine.
“This method is now being used to try and humiliate Damascenes.”
