Cuomo got contribution from law firm representing Weinstein before halting probe into his case
[American Thinker] As a native Illinoisan, I can appreciate the wildly corrupt nature of this story. New York Governor Mario Cuomo received a $25,000 donation from the law firm representing Harvey Weinstein just six days before he called off an investigation into the movie mogul's behavior.

The explanation from the law firm for the donation could have been lifted from a Chicago alderman's playbook.

Page Six:
"Neither Mr. Boies, nor anyone from his firm, ever discussed Harvey Weinstein or Mr. Vance with Mr. Cuomo, or anyone from his office, at any time," the spokesperson told online political publication Capital and Main. "Mr. Boies is a longtime supporter of Mr. Cuomo and his contribution in June was consistent with his contributions to Mr. Cuomo over years past."

"Mr. Boies" is David Boies, a principal in the law firm of Boies Schiller & Flexner. Why would Boies even have to mention Weinstein? Cuomo knew Boies was representing Weinstein. Boies knew Cuomo knew. It's the old wink and a nod campaign contribution where no words are necessary. Cuomo knew why Boies was giving him the $25K and the governor knew what it was for and what he had to do for it.

Presto! Six days later, the prosecutor is told to drop the investigation.

Ex-New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin sentenced to 10 years
[USATODAY] Former mayor Ray Nagin, the businessman-turned-politician who became the worldwide face of the city after Hurricane Katrina, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday.

Nagin, 58, was ordered to report to federal prison Sept. 8 and to pay restitution of $82,000. He was found guilty Feb. 12 of fraud, bribery and related charges involving crimes that took place before and after Katrina devastated the city in August 2005.

Prosecutors immediately objected to the sentence, which falls well below typical guidelines that called for 15-20 years.

"What Ray Nagin did was sell his office over and over and over again," Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Coman said outside the courthouse. "The damage that Ray Nagin inflicted upon this community ... is incalculable. We as a community need not and should not accept public corruption."

Coman said a decision on whether to appeal will be made by U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli.

Judge Ginger Berrigan determined that Nagin did not have a leadership role in the criminal conspiracy, saying all defendants are "equally culpable."

"Mr. Nagin's crimes were motivated in part by a deeply misguided desire to provide for those closest to him," she said.

Africa Subsaharan
Letter from Africa: Should Ghanaian women be limited to three babies?
[BBC] In our series of letters from African journalists, Elizabeth Ohene considers the controversial proposal to limit women to having three babies in Ghana.

Among the Ga, the people who are indigenous to Ghana's capital, Accra, a woman is entitled to a live sheep on the delivery of her 10th child. The word for it is "nyongmato".

I am not making this up even though it does sound like the kind of apocryphal story that is regularly made up.

Lots of very important people among the Gas can testify to this. Unfortunately, I have not met any woman who has actually got a live sheep for having given birth to 10 children.

Indeed, I have never met any woman who has had 10 children.

I don't know if I have been moving in the wrong circles, because I don't even know any woman who has had five children. OK, as soon as I wrote that, I realised I was wrong.

Hillary Clinton's Campaign Implicated In $84 Million Campaign Finance Scandal
h/t Instapundit
The attempt to turn the Stormy Daniels unpleasantness into a campaign finance violation ‐ a weak attempt as it tuns out ‐ is starting to come into focus as a new Federal Elections Commission (FEC) complaint filed by The Committee to Defend the President alleges the Hillary Victory Fund (HVF) was "us[ing] state chapters as straw men to circumvent campaign donation limits and launder(ing) the money back to her campaign."

...HVF solicited six-figure donations from major donors, including Calvin Klein and "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, and routed them through state parties en route to the Clinton campaign. Roughly $84 million may have been laundered in what might be the single largest campaign finance scandal in U.S. history.

...On top of that, six-figure donations either never actually passed through state party accounts or were never actually under state party control, which adds false FEC reporting by HVF, state parties, and the DNC to the laundry list.

...Finally, as Donna Brazile and others admitted, the DNC placed the funds under the Clinton campaign’s direct control, a massive breach of campaign finance law that ties the conspiracy together.

Democratic donors, knowing the funds would end up with Clinton’s campaign, wrote six-figure checks to influence the election ‐ 100 times larger than allowed.

Sarah Palin Excluded from John McCain's Funeral.
[Breitbart] Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, who was Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)’s running mate in the 2008 presidential election, has been excluded from his funeral.

Breitbart News has independently confirmed an earlier report in People magazine, which reported that Palin was not sent an invitation, and was told through intermediaries to stay away from the ceremony.

McCain fundraiser Carla Eudy confirmed to People that Palin had not been invited — possibly, People speculated, at the behest of the McCain family.

The news comes on the tenth anniversary of the date in 2008 when Palin was announced as McCain’s pick for Vice President.

Palin now joins President Donald Trump on the list of those barred from the funeral.

But unlike Trump, Palin never feuded with McCain and never criticized him.

#2  ...I have managed to hold my tongue about John McCain so far, but it's getting pretty damned hard to continue doing so.

The man displayed sublime courage as a POW and should rightly be held up as an exemplar in that context - but his actions before and since leave a lot to be desired as a commissioned officer and politician. His family (wife's family, actually) has more than enough money to be considered 1%, and by excluding Governor Palin from the funeral his family is showing exactly what they think of the people that he claimed to be a part of.

From the VG Bookshelf: "The Russia Hoax"
h/t Instapundit
[VictoryGirls] The Russia Hoax, by Gregg Jarrett, is a tautly written book that is a vigorous defense of the Rule of Law. Does it defend President Trump? Yes, because the facts expose a two-tiered justice system which should disturb anyone regardless of political loyalties.

THE RUSSIA HOAX IS WORTHY OF TOM CLANCY
In 286 pages, Jarrett precisely lays out the facts of what is an unfolding soft coup attempt. With copious notes sourcing the narrative, he lays out a clear chronology. While many of the key facts are public record, Jarrett pulls together the disparate parts into a cohesive whole. The too-close-to-be-coincidence of significant events and the close relationships of the players reads like a political thriller. The book begins where unraveling this whole sordid mess of corruption must begin ‐ with Hillary Clinton.

Critics chide CNN for refusing to retract false Trump-Cohen ‘bombshell’ report
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Both Conservative and liberal critics have chided CNN for refusing to issue a correction that US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
did not have prior knowledge of the Russian Trump Tower meeting.

This comes as Trump’s lawyers speaking publicly on his behalf and his longtime "fixer"-turned-foe Michael Cohen have been fumbling the facts of late.

Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis, spent recent days walking back his bombshell assertions that his client could tell the special counsel that Trump had prior knowledge of a meeting with a Russian lawyer to get damaging information on Perennial Presidential Campaigner Hillary Crooked Hillary Clinton
... former first lady, former secretary of state, former presidential candidate, Conqueror of Benghazi, Heroine of Tuzla, formerly described by her supporters as the smartest woman in the world, usually described by the rest of us as The Thing That Wouldn't Go Away...
"I should have been much clearer that I could not confirm the story," Davis said Monday, attempting to clean up his comments in interviews last week after Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations, tax evasion and bank fraud.

Sara A. Carter, a national and international investigative news hound, took to her website to call out CNN for refusing to follow other major US news outlets in issuing a retraction or correction of the reporting.

"Davis changing his story has prompted many of the news outlets to issue a retraction or correction of the reporting, with only one holdout remaining, CNN. As of Tuesday evening, CNN has not issued any corrections, rather it has decided to further stand behind its reporting," Carter wrote.

Liberal writers like Glenn Greenwald also pitched in, writing in The Intercept that "it’s certainly possible that CNN had other sources for this story besides Davis, who now repudiates it".

"It’s hard to see how CNN’s story could be true given that Davis, Cohen’s own lawyer, explicitly says that Cohen has no information that Trump had prior knowledge of the Trump Tower meeting, that Cohen cannot and will not tell Mueller that this happened, and that Davis’ prior claims about Cohen’s knowledge and intentions are false," Greenwald said.

If these things are true... we're in the presence of history-warping genius. If not... well, it's not as if we had much choice, and as left-menacing bogeys go, Trump's more "meanest Teletubby" than Hilter, no?

Report: Andrew Gillum scheduled meeting with undercover FBI agents during Costa Rica trip with lobbyists
But, but, "Don't monkey around with electing a socialist" is a racial dogwhistle! To racially-obsessed dogs
[TampaBay] The Tallahassee Democrat report came just days after the FBI issued a new subpoena in the drawn-out case investigating corruption in Tallahassee's city government.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum went on a luxury Costa Rica vacation in May 2016 with a group of lobbyists, friends and investors, the Tallahassee Democrat reported Friday.

But that's not all: during the trip, Gillum received a calendar invite via email from Adam Corey, an investor in Tallahassee's Edison restaurant, to set up a meeting at The Edison with supposed "developer" Mike Miller, according to the Democrat's reporting. Miller was actually an undercover FBI agent.

The story also reports that Corey, who has been friends with Gillum since college, was on the trip along with another Edison investor Sean Pittman and other lobbyists and business associates.

The trip and the subsequent meeting came at the height of a still-ongoing FBI probe into corruption in the Tallahassee city government that produced a new subpoena on Thursday.

Corey was a prime target of that new subpoena, with the FBI seeking documents about him and the Edison, which was granted $2.1 million in taxpayer money by the city's Community Redevelopment Agency to help with the restaurant's Cascades Park renovation and construction.

Corey also served briefly as Gillum's campaign treasurer during his 2014 run for mayor. The mayor has since cut ties with the developer.

Gillum, who is running for governor as a Democrat, has repeatedly said that law enforcement has assured him that he is not the focus of the probe. But the calendar invite represents the first reported connection between Gillum and the undercover agents, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

"This is not new news," said Geoff Burgan, Gillum's campaign spokesman, directing requests for comment to Gillum's chief-of-staff's remarks in the Democrat. "The meeting that they're referring to was reported on extensively before."

Though he acknowledged the story was not helpful, "this investigation is clearly closing in on someone else in the city, and the campaign is focused on the issues. That's what voters care about."

In the story, ethics experts and watchdogs cringed at the trip, which they said had the appearance of impropriety even without the FBI link. Gillum and his friends insisted to the Democrat that no official business was discussed and he paid for all of his and his wife's expenses.

The group reportedly split a $1,400-a-night luxury villa on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, according statements made to the Democrat.

It is against the law for officials to accept gifts from people trying to influence their vote or other official action, or accept any gift over $100 from lobbyists or groups that conduct official business with the person's office.

No matter what, the repeated news about the feds' investigation of Tallahassee is likely not good for Gillum, who is trailing behind the other Democratic candidates in terms of fundraising.

Burgan dismissed the idea that the story could hamper future fundraising, saying: "The biggest chilling effect on fundraising is that Andrew's the only one who's not a millionaire."
