Report: Chicago Police Took over 20 Minutes to Respond to ‘Intentional' Hit-and-Run that Killed 3 and Injured 2
[Breitbart] The Chicago Police Department (CPD) took between 20 and 30 minutes to respond to a horrific hit-and-run crash that left three people dead and two people injured.

The fatal accident occurred outside of Jeffery Pub
…one of Chicago's longest-running LGBTQ nightspots…
at around 5:03 a.m. on Sunday, but it wasn’t until approximately 5:33 a.m. that a police officer reported to dispatchers that he was at the scene, CWB Chicago reported, citing dispatcher records.

The deceased victims were identified as Donald Huey, 25, Devonta Vivetter, 27, and Jaylen Ausley, 23, WLS reported.

No suspect has been arrested or identified, and the investigation is still ongoing. A vehicle that is believed to have been involved in the fatal crash has been identified and located by authorities, WLS noted.

“It appears to be intentional based upon what everyone has seen,” CPD Chief of Detectives Brenden Deenihan told reporters via WGN 9.

At around 4:35 a.m., dispatchers received the first call of a disturbance at the pub over a man who was threatening people. The man was reportedly threatening to grab a gun from his vehicle.

During this time, police in the Grand Crossing (Third) District were backed up with multiple other calls they had received that night.

A police dispatch recording at approximately 4:48 a.m., obtained by CWB Chicago, shows that Jeffery Pub disturbance report not being read until 43 seconds after a long list of reports was read aloud.

Eleven minutes later, dispatchers received reports of about 20 people fighting outside the pub. A man was reported with a gun outside moments later.

During the commotion, a driver plowed through the crowd that was in the street, striking multiple people at high speed and then driving away. Disturbing video footage shows the horrific moment of the fatal crash.

After a dispatcher read the hit-and-run report at approximately 5:03 a.m., noting a body was lying at a train crossing near the pub, no police officers responded to the report.

As emergency medical responders began arriving on the scene about ten minutes later, no police officers had yet responded to the dispatcher’s report of the hit-and-run at the pub. Fire department officials requested more support when they responded to the scene, noting they needed more traffic and crowd control.

At 5:19 a.m., a sergeant with the CPD finally responded to the dispatcher that he would head toward the scene. The sergeant then reported to dispatchers at 5:33 a.m. that he was at the scene with officers from other districts.

Based on dispatch reports, it took the CPD just under an hour to respond to Jeffery Pub from the first reported disturbance and approximately from 20 to 30 minutes to respond to the scene after receiving the hit-and-run report.

CWB Chicago noted that in the aftermath of the fatal accident, the CPD sergeant was the only “available” officer in the third district to respond to the scene.

Since April 2020, the district has lost 25 percent of its officers, according to city data, the outlet noted.

While there is some public pressure from groups to label the hit-and-run as a hate crime, since Jeffery Pub is a prominent gay bar in the city, police officials are not considering the fatal accident as a hate crime.

“We don’t have any evidence to support that somebody was trying to harm these individuals because of their race, religion, etc. at this time, because we don’t have a suspect in custody and we don’t have any information that somebody stated that,” said CPD Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan via WLS.

Fifth set of human remains is found in 'mob-hit dumping ground' Lake Mead in Las Vegas: Skeleton is recovered from SWIMMING AREA as drought-battered reservoir continues to reveal dark side
  • Human remains were reported near Swim Beach in Lake Mead on Monday evening, the National Park Service announced - the fifth such find since May

  • On August 6 the fourth set was unearthed in Swim Beach, and the third set, also at Swim Beach, was discovered on July 26

  • Coroners are currently investigating whether the third and fourth sets could have come from the same person

  • It is not yet known whether the fifth set could also be partial remains of the same person

  • The first set was discovered on May 1 - a man in a barrel, believed to have been murdered in the 1970s or 80s with a gunshot wound to the head

  • The second set was found near Callville Bay, and a man believes that could be his father, who drowned in the lake in 1958

Evidence ties the son of the suspect in the New Mexico Muslim killings to the crimes, authorities allege
A fast developing story. The last murder was only ten days ago.
[Yahoo] The son of the man suspected of killing at least two Moslem men in New Mexico in recent months may also have played a role in the crimes, authorities alleged in court documents filed last week.

In a preliminary hearing on Monday, Judge John F. Robbenhaar elected to detain Shaheen Syed, a son of Muhammad Syed, pending trial after listening to evidence brought against him by federal prosecutors. Robbenhaar ultimately found that Syed "represents a danger to the community."

Syed was already in jug and is facing separate charges after he was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly putting an incorrect address in a firearms transaction record for a weapon he bought last year.

Syed's father, Muhammad Syed, is a suspect in the killing of Naeem Hussain, 25, on Aug. 5 and the slaying of Mohammad Ahmadi, 62, on Nov. 7. Authorities are still investigating those cases, and he has not been charged with the murders.

In documents filed by the U.S. attorney's office on Friday, prosecutors claim evidence ties Shaheen Syed, also known as Maiwand, to those murders. That evidence was brought before the court in Monday's hearing.

This evidence includes cell tower data, which connect his phone to his father's and place them both near where Naeem Hussain was murdered this month. There is also evidence that Syed had "short and frequent communications with his father both before and after the murder of Naeem Hussain," the documents say.

"Telephone calls between Muhammad Atif Syed and the defendant would be consistent with quick surveillance calls, both before and after the shooting," according to the U.S. attorney's office. "And there appears to be no logical reason for the defendant to have just happened to have been in the vicinity of the murder scene so shortly after Mr. Hussain was murdered."

Investigators also found a pistol in Syed's bedroom when they executed a search warrant at the family home. It was not made clear whether the weapon is connected in any way to the two murders.

In court, an attorney for Syed argued that federal prosecutors are attempting to detain his client for a crime he has not been charged with based off of a cursory investigation.

"The United States’ motion boils down to an effort to detain Defendant for a crime with which he has not even been charged," attorney John C. Anderson said in a response to the initial federal motion. "If the United States or the State of New Mexico does not have sufficient evidence even to charge Defendant with any involvement in the murders, Defendant should not be detained based on supposed involvement in those murders."

Anderson said Syed and his father’s sharing an interest in firearms in addition to cell tower data that does not say exactly how close he was to the scene of the recent murder "is hardly clear and convincing" evidence.

The court documents also refer to Syed as a "serial liar." Investigators alleged that he lied several times, citing the incident in which Syed allegedly used an incorrect address while purchasing a firearm.

Highlighting his alleged dishonesty in court on Monday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Brawley said Syed told law enforcement officials early last week after the search of his family’s residence that he had not been in the at gun stores recently, which authorities said was determined to be false.

"Defendant’s propensity for dishonesty should undermine the Court’s confidence that he will be forthright with any probation officer tasked with supervising him on any form of pretrial release," the court documents say.

Syed's past run-ins with law enforcement were also cited as reasons to detain him in documents and in court.

Police responded to a call earlier this year about a domestic violence incident in which Syed was alleged to have hit his 16-year-old sister and his father. His father, who had blood all over his face, said he tried to prevent Syed from hitting his sister, which resulted in Syed’s striking him in the face, according to the documents.

The daughter did not cooperate with police, and she told them she did not know what happened, while the father opted to press charges against Syed. The police report on this incident also mentions that Syed had previously allegedly hit his sister "to the point she was in the hospital and taken into custody by CYFD (Children Youth & Families Department)."

Officers issued Syed a summons to appear in court on a criminal charge of "battery on a household member," but he failed to appear, they said. A bench warrant issued for Syed on April 4 remains outstanding.

Anderson said he never received the summons or the complaint, according to court documents.

His father was also, including one in a state office building, court documents show.

Another incident prosecutors characterized as "road rage" in July 2021 was also submitted as evidence against Syed by prosecutors.

In the incident, Syed and his brother were in a car in a Walmart parking lot in Albuquerque when a the driver of a black sedan "brake checked" them, then flashed a firearm. Syed, who was driving the car, allowed his brother to step out of the passenger side and shoot at the black sedan before quickly driving away, the court heard.

No charges were brought against Syed or his brother in this incident, according to court documents.

Syed now has the right to appeal the order to detain him to a district judge, but his attorney told NBC News on Tuesday that he hasn't made a final decision yet.

Free drill weekend childcare pilot coming for Guard soldiers
[Army Times] Army National Guard troops across six states will soon have a new option for securing childcare for drill weekends, according to a National Guard Bureau memorandum obtained by Army Times.

Members of the Army Guard who are assigned to units in the following six states will be able to enroll in the program starting Sept. 1 in preparation for drill weekends beginning in November:

  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire
  • New Mexico
  • Ohio
  • Virginia
  • Washington state

The "Weekend Drill Child Care Pilot" won’t cost anything for the troops who use it, the memo signed by NGB personnel chief Maj. Gen. Eric Little stated. The general described "lack of weekend drill childcare" as an issue that’s "impacting Soldier retention."

According to the memo, the pilot is scheduled to run for a year, though NGB has the option to extend annually for two additional years and add more states "based on available funds."

The program is built into an existing Army contract with nonprofit Child Care Aware of America that assists active duty and Active Guard/Reserve families with daycare fees. For the new pilot, the company will oversee enrollment and find providers for the participating part-time troops.

    P2K,

If they're single parents, they're supposed to have a mobility care plan on file - I was in Korea when an emergency evac exercise revealed a bunch of folks who had nowhere to get their kids (and there were all E7 and higher, by the by).

#3  I had to have a care plan for my daughter, as a single parent while I was on active duty - with the signatures of the people who were to care for her in an emergency, and to escort her back to CONUS and deliver her to my parents as caregivers in case of an evacuation of dependents and non-essential personnel. I had to have this document updated constantly.

Minneapolis teachers' union negotiates clause requiring WHITE educators to be laid off first regardless of seniority to make up for 'past discriminations': Rule is part of contract that ended two-week strike this past March
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
    • The stipulation is part of a new agreement starting in spring 2023 between the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers and Minneapolis Public Schools

    • Part of the agreement was an attempt to re-format how the school district hires and keeps teachers of color

    • The new contract says that they may go outside the order to avoid layoffs to a teacher who is 'a member of a population underrepresented'

    • This prioritizing may apply to bring back teachers who were laid off should re-hires occur

#6  Race War On Whites, the language is mere substitution - Consider 1933 Germany:
"The first wave of legislation, from 1933 to 1934, focused largely on limiting the participation of Jews in German public life. The first major law to curtail the rights of Jewish citizens was the "Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service" of April 7, 1933, according to which Jewish and "politically unreliable" civil servants and employees were to be excluded from state service. The new Civil Service Law was the German authorities' first formulation of the so-called Aryan Paragraph, a kind of regulation used to exclude Jews (and often by extension other "non-Aryans") from organizations, professions, and other aspects of public life.

Pilot error blamed [of course] for fatal US military Osprey crash that killed four marines in Norway during a NATO training flight
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
    • An investigation has concluded that the MV-22B crash in Bodø, Norway, is the result of pilot error
Apparently Ospreys like to crash, too.
    • The March 18 incident led to the deaths of four Marines

    • Aircraft was being used as a NATO training exercise preparing allied forces for 'extreme and rugged surroundings'

    • A Marines Corps. finding determined the aircraft lost too much airspeed and altitude while entering a valley which the crew could not recover from
That definitely sounds like a crash...
    • Captain Ross A. Reynolds, Captain Matthew J. Tomkiewicz, Gunnery Sergeant James W. Speedy and Corporal Jacob M. Moore died in the crash

#2  The Ospreys are inherently dangerous.

The main reasons is due to the gyroscopic effects of the propellers and turbines with all those rotating parts.

As an experiment, take a bicycle wheel or a gyroscope (toy ones works too) and note the angle of the axle, vertical or horizontal. Spin it up and try to go from one angle to the other, i.e: from vertical to horizontal and vs versa. note the effect of doing so.

The Ospreys has two of them.

Pilot error, my ass! It's the design!

Fire erupts at church in Upper Egypt due to short circuit - statement
This is a different church catching fire from an electrical short than the one that caught fire Sunday at the other end of the country in Giza, near Cairo.
[AlAhram] A fire erupted Tuesday at a church in Upper Egypt's governorate of Minya due to an electrical short circuit, with no causalities reported, according to the Ministry of Interior.

In its statement, the Ministry of Interior said the fire that took place at the Anba Bishoy Church in New Minya City resulted from an electrical short circuit in one of the building’s unused halls according to church officials and witness accounts.

The Public Prosecution issued a statement saying that they were investigating the incident.

Governor of Minya Osama El-Qaday said in a media statement after visiting the church Tuesday afternoon that the fire took place in the first floor and did not spread to other floors.

Egypt’s Orthodox Coptic Church issued a statement on the incident stating that the blaze destroyed all the contents of the church without causing any casualties.

Only one person suffered from asphyxiation due to the smoke; he was treated on site and did not need to be hospitalised, according to Ministry of Health Spokesperson Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar.

He added that four ambulances were dispatched to the church; in addition, Minya General Hospital, Minya University Hospital and Health Insurance Hospital were put on alert in case of emergency.

Abdel-Ghaffar stated the ambulances arrived at the church within six minutes of receiving the call, adding that the fire was reported at 2:30pm.

Anba Bishoy church was inaugurated in June 2019.

On Sunday, a huge fire killed 41 people and injured 14 others in Abu Seifin Church in Giza governorate’s Imbaba district. According to the forensic examination the fire was resulted from an electrical short circuit.

    Britain
UK Transgender Center Closing, Being Sued - aggressive transitioning
[Yahoo] NHS gender clinic, the Tavistock Centre, could face legal action over alleged 'failings in care'

The NHS Trust responsible for the UK's only gender-identity clinic for children may face legal action over claims it "rushed" some young patients into treatment, including the use of puberty-blocking drugs.

NHS England has already ordered the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust to wind-down operations at the Tavistock Centre, also known as the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS), after an independent review found it was not a "safe or viable long-term option".

But now a UK-based law firm is pursuing a group claim for clinical negligence against the Trust, amidst allegations the service "misdiagnosed" some young patients who were struggling with their gender identity.

Earlier this year, the NHS-backed Cass Review, led by paediatrician Dr Hilary Cass, published its interim report which found that some health staff at the Tavistock Centre had felt under pressure to adopt "an unquestioning affirmative approach" to children presenting with gender dysphoria.

It also said the clinic was under "unsustainable pressure" due to spiralling waiting lists, and that it struggled to keep "routine and consistent data" on patients.

With the London-based centre set to fully close by spring next year, new regional centres will be set up in its place to "ensure the holistic needs' of patients are fully met, the NHS said last month.
Courtesy of Glinemble Grump3798, more from Zero Hedge:
[ZeroHedge] Tavistock, the only gender and sex change clinic in Britain, went from treating around 130 child patients per year in 2010 to treating nearly 2400 in 2021. In fact, the clinic was facing overwhelming demand for services by the time it was finally shut down, and numerous proponents of sex change treatment for children argued that MORE clinics like Tavistock would soon be needed.

What changed in the past decade? Not the percentage of people born with gender dysphoria; that would be statistically impossible. The only thing that has changed is that Trans identity politics are now a fad and young people are being specifically targeted with trans propaganda.

The controversy around Tavistock deepened in 2020, when the center was taken to court by Keira Bell, a former patient, who argued she had been too young to consent to the medical treatment overseen by the GIDS that began her female-to-male transition as a teenager. Bell won her initial case but it was overturned on appeal, with the court of appeal reaffirming the principle of Gillick competence that “it was for doctors and not judges to decide on the capacity of a person under 16 to consent to medical treatment.”

In other words, it's up to the same doctors that have a political agenda and stand to make considerable money by conning children and teens into believing they are trans. These doctors, with no science whatsoever to back their claims on gender identity, are the people that get to decide if your child needs gender affirmation drugs or surgeries in the UK.

Tavistock's shut down reaffirms the growing concerns among the public about the deceptive nature of gender ideology and the fact that children with no legitimate understanding of sexuality have been mutilated chemically and physically in the name of political cultism rather than personal health. It has been recently revealed that the clinic is also facing a massive lawsuit of at least 1000 families of former patients and the list is expanding daily.

    Caribbean-Latin America
Socialism: Cuba Offers Chicken, Deodorant as Rewards to First Responders at Largest Fire in Nation's History
[Breitbart] A local store in Mayabeque, Cuba, boasted of rewarding first responders for helping extinguish the largest fire in the history of the nation with a meager supply of chicken, deodorant, soda, and cooking oil this week – basic goods that have for decades been considered luxuries for many suffering under communism.

The Castro regime took nearly a week to eliminate a fire that destroyed over half the area of its largest storage facility, the supertanker oil base in northern Matanzas, Cuba. Communist Party officials claimed that lightning struck an oil storage tank and set its contents on fire on August 5, resulting in the complete destruction of four of the eight storage tanks. Tanks continued to explode well into the week after the lightning strike, and “oily” rain was reported as far from Matanzas as Havana, 65 miles east. Castro regime officials are still assessing the extent of the damage at press time; unidentified human remains were discovered in the immediate vicinity of the fire on Tuesday.

Authorities said the fire had officially been extinguished on August 12. Authorities confirmed only two deaths but 130 injuries. Unofficial reports suggest that dozens may still be missing at press time.

The Castro regime refused aid from the United States, preferring to use the event to launch an anti-American campaign urging an end to sanctions on regime elites. It instead used as first responders young men performing their mandatory military service, many reportedly teens and few with any experience firefighting – or reason to believe they would have to engage in firefighting as a soldier. The disappearances of young men from neighboring provinces have inflamed anti-communist unrest already widespread across the island, manifesting in nearly incessant protests since the nationwide rebellion against the Castro regime on July 11, 2021.

In an apparent attempt to quell outrage from the families of those cast into the fire as first responders, a local regime-affiliated store chain in Mayabeque – between Havana and Matanzas – called Tiendas Caribe posted an update on Facebook last week that went viral this weekend, showing alleged first responders receiving small bags of what appear to be chicken leg quarters in gratitude.

“The La Colosal Shop in Bejucal donates food supplies to firemen and other workers who participated in the large fire at the supertanker base in Matanzas,” the caption read.

#4  I couldnt find mention of "socialism" in the Cyrillic press or in translations of Putin's speech. Closest thing said to socialism was the word social,

"The International Anti-Fascist Congress held as part of the forum is of great social and political importance."

I dont think when Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Russia get together, it's not to spitball ways to advance socialism in the way the Soviet Bloc countries advanced communism, or how Western Liberal Democracy advance anti masculine wokism.

So this Allied Socialists label is lost on me. Feels very John Bolton ish.

Canada: good social democracy; Venezuela: bad social democracy. Cuba is a bad one party system where the elites of the island get rich; UKR is a good one party system where global elites get rich.

America and the World has changed. US has political prisoners now, we just learnt the US has such a dearth in baby food processing that there are shortages - that is not a sign of a free market. And Democrats are just another word for socialist, I mean social democracy. Which gets me to my conclusion: Socialists vs America is passe and antiquated.

    Government Corruption
Gretchen Whitmer alleged kidnapping plot: Michigan defense attorneys question key FBI informant
[FoxNews] Adam Fox and Barry Croft are on trial for a second time on conspiracy charges for allegedly plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

Defense attorneys for two men accused of hatching plans to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and other public officials in 2020 sharply questioned a key FBI informant who infiltrated their anti-government group.

Adam Fox, 39, and Barry Croft Jr., 46, are on trial for the second time on conspiracy charges related to the alleged plot. A jury acquitted two other defendants earlier this year, but could not reach a verdict on Fox and Croft.

    Dan Chappel,
...that’d be Big Dan, who was paid $54,000 for six months work seducing his targets to come up with the most inept plot since Mad Magazine’s Spy vs. Spy. Inept federal agent, too — during the course of this thing he ended up indicted on federal gun charges...
an Army veteran, testified this week that he joined the paramilitary group, the Wolverine Watchmen, in early 2020 to keep his gun skills sharp, but said that he turned to the FBI when members of the group starting planning to harm public officials.

Fox and Croft's attorneys challenged Chappel about compensation he received from the FBI, which was more than $50,000, as well as ways that he encouraged the men to continue with their plot.

"You said it would look like a hunting accident," Fox attorney Christopher Gibbons said on Tuesday, noting that Chappel supported firing shots at Whitmer's home and suggested ways to damage a door on her house.

Chappel countered that he was just trying to fit in with the group and "never expected anything" from the government.

"I wanted to stop people from doing bad things to good people," Chappel testified.

Chappel and other informants drove with Fox and Croft to Whitmer's second home in northern Michigan and discussed putting an explosive under a nearby bridge, prosecutors have said.

Prosecutors played recordings of Fox and Croft actively discussing their plans to target Whitmer and others over COVID-19 restrictions.

"I’m gonna hit soon," Croft was heard saying on one recording in June 2020 with other anti-government activists. "I’m going to terrorize people. The right people. The people who have been terrorizing my people."

Attorneys for Fox and Croft did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

Gov. Whitmer, a Democrat, has rarely spoken publicly about the alleged plot, but told the Washington Post last month that she thought it was "awful" that two men had been acquitted and a mistrial was declared for Fox and Croft.

    Home Front: Politix
Dr. Ashish Jha's Stunning Claim About Covid Puts The Mis In Misinformation
[Townhall] Dr. Ashish Jha, White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator, claimed during a Tuesday appearance on C-SPAN that U.S. Covid-19 deaths would be "close to zero" if "everybody was up to date on their vaccines and people got treated with Paxlovid."

"I will say one thing, which is again, the power of these vaccines," Jha said. "Right now, we have four to five hundred Americans still dying every day. If everybody was up to date on their vaccines and people got treated with Paxlovid as they’re supposed to, deaths would go to close to zero across America."

If Jha's stunning claim were true, of course, virtually none of the hundreds of daily Covid deaths ('with' or 'from') would include anyone who was "up to date" on Covid vaccines and used the drug Paxlovid. On the first part, as Rational Ground's Justin Hart points out, one only need refer to any set of county data to realize that "the vast majority of people noted as Covid deaths are fully vaccinated and fully boosted."

Robo-dog armed with a GRENADE LAUNCHER is unveiled at Russian arms fair - but experts say it is actually a Chinese 'home helper' that can be bought online for just £2,500

#1  Went to this arms expo thingy in Russia sometime back, and they had this odd robocop-ish mech with minigun, grenade launcher, a bayonet, oh my. It was one of the newer companies, like Trion or something.

So anyway, I discerned right away it was a really big guy in a metal suit with pointless hydraulics and cabling, like a very serious cosplayer y'know? And I asked our escort about it, politely of course.

The MO guy knocked the thing about to show us it was a deadly machine. Now the guy inside was already tired and pissed holding up that thingamajig, and sweating indide. The MO guy was a little displeased with me because the presentation had said something about 'fighter robots of the fyoochurrr!' And everyone had bought it so far.

My pal meanwhile was whispering in my ear, 'That poor bastard inside.' 🙃

Then the guy regained his composure and went on to say that it was an... uhh, exoskeleton suit! A state of the art, mystery battery powered, full armour with weapons and shit.

We wanted to move on and give the poor guy inside it some reprieve but the ministry asshole went on about it. I finally chirped, 'I want to see the new vykhlop! Do you have that here?'

No learning is wasted... You probably weren’t the only one asking for the silly thing. In America that would be a serious marketing opportunity.

#11  My friend bought an M79 blooper for $700, Mercutio. He sold it after using it. That's how you use and re-sell, so same stuff is circulated sometimes. Often, the vendor can buy back for half the price. There's double action launchers too like MGLs, or UBLs for a grand and thereabouts.

But this is all nothing. I once witnessed the purchase of a judge. An actual sitting judge of a neighbouring country. 🤪

#13  But it's generally better to buy new stuff, with case and cleaning kit and all. You never know what the used thingy you're buying has been involved in. Currently the stuff from AFG is the best. And vendors will deliver to the 'Stain easily, from where they'll arrange a 'courier' anywhere from the UAE to Iran to the UK. Your DoS sock puppets there are busy cleaning their stock by the way. I was told they'll bid highest at auctions and there's an inside joke in AFG on how to spot such buyers and make them pay more.

Keep in mind that every time a 'revolutionary' aircraft has come out in the last 75 years, the airlines have jumped on it, only to cancel out later. For instance, PanAm ordered a fairly substantial number of DeHavilland Comets, only to cancel (along with a lot of other airlines) when the Comet's fatal design flaw revealed itself. A bunch of airlines ordered BAC Concordes, but as the costs of the plane (and mandated performance restrictions) became clear they backed out.

And in both of those examples, it can be argued that none of those airlines ever had any intention of taking delivery of a single airframe. In the case of the Comet, PanAm wanted to nudge US manufacturers towards a US built jet - Boeing got the hint and started development of the 707. The Concorde orders were used by other airlines to try and bludgeon the US into subsidizing a US-built SST, but we know how that turned out.

Sri Lanka to end state of emergency: President
[AlAhram] Sri Lanka will not extend a state of emergency imposed to control anti-government protests as the situation in the impoverished nation has "stabilised", the president's office said Tuesday.

Ranil Wickremesinghe invoked the tough laws four days after his predecessor fled the country and resigned on July 14 after months of protests over acute shortages of food, fuel and medicines.

The emergency imposed by Wickremesinghe is due to lapse on Thursday and he has the power to renew it every month thereafter.

"The situation in the country has stabilised, there is no need to reimpose the state of emergency when it lapses this week," Wickremesinghe's office quoted him as saying.

The emergency regulations allow troops and police to arrest and detain suspects for long periods.

The state of emergency has been widely criticised by rights groups as a draconian step that allows the president to make regulations and limit citizens' freedoms without judicial review.

Wickremesinghe's predecessor Gotabaya Rajapaksa was forced to flee the country and resign when tens of thousands of protesters overran his official residence.

The nation's 22 million people have been enduring severe shortages of essentials since late last year, after the country ran out of foreign exchange to finance even the most vital imports.

The country defaulted on its $51 billion foreign debt in mid-April and is in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a possible bailout.

Sri Lanka is currently facing hyperinflation, with the overall rate at 60.8 percent while food inflation was at a much higher 90.9 percent last month, according to official data.
