VDH on Dunkirk - the Movie and the History
[Hoover] It is perhaps unfair to critique Dunkirk's focus on the common soldier and the near anonymous killing swirling about him. But even here, greater detail would have enhanced the film's emphases on the personal experience of battle. In the movie, the sheer tapestry of the British rescue effort never fully unfolds.

In fact, well over 800 British warships, merchant marine boats, fishing trawlers, and yachts formed a huge armada that dotted the horizon off the Dunkirk coast. Yet that vast maritime landscape is never captured by the film's portrait of a seemingly smallish private flotilla.

The film also shows the littered beaches of Dunkirk, but again the effect of the screen's occasional flotsam and jetsam is understatement. In fact, the wreckage of the British army was unimaginable. Almost all of its artillery‐well over 2,000 field guns of various sizes‐over 60,000 wheeled vehicles, 700 tanks, and over 11,000 machine guns were lost, much of them left scattered on the beach, a reality that again is hardly captured by the film.
Do read the whole thing, and if you have a few weeks, or retire, read Churchill's The Second World War, too.

Europe
Macron is the Peter Pan of Europe
[IsraelNationalNews] With 66% of electoral support, Emmanel Macron achieved an indisputable victory against Marine Le Pen. But the meaning of his victory is less clear.

A very small part of the voters embraced Macron’s vision of France. The majority voted mostly to block the way to Le Pen, who for various reasons is still massively rejected by the political class. Some see Macron as the spiritual brother of Justin Trudeau, even if he is less flamboyant. Macron wants to give optimism to his country. Those who are worried about populism will applaud him. Macron wants to be progressive. Those who have reservations about the globalization that deconstructs societies will be worried. Macron is comfortable with multiculturalism.

Eric Zémmour on the radio just said new France’s president is "Peter Pan at the Eliseo". He then called Macron "the eternal youth syndrome, the God of the consumer society". The French-Canadian intellectual Mathieue Bock-Coté spoke of Macron as the president of "liberal consensus" who won in the name of "diversity". Francois Xavier-Bellamy defined Macron as "the France which forgets", the France which chooses the "cultural euthanasia". Ivan Rioufol, a well known columnist at Le Figaro, wrote that Macron is the expression of the "bourgeois urban left".

#1  Of all to chose from Peter Pan is a dark character; "Peter Pan- Peter Pan, the character, is always remembered as the lovable scamp who whisks children off from their homes and into a magical world of adventure. What people seem to forget about is all the hard-core murder". Truly a dark character.

Law or Mob Rule--Reflections on the Cultural Was Unfolding
by JohnQC

I woke up this morning and look at the news over coffee. The first story that caught my attention was that of the mobsters in Durham tearing down a statue of a confederate soldier. It put me in a mind akin to when the Taliban blew up the Buddhist statues in Afghanistan about the time of our involvement in the Taliban/AQ war after 911. These were the ancient 1700-year old Buddhist Statues of Bamiyan. After failing to destroy the 1,700-year-old sandstone statues of Buddha with anti-aircraft and tank fire, the Taliban brought a lorryload of dynamite from Kabul to complete the job. The statues were "offensive" to the Taliban much like the statues of confederate soldiers and confederate leaders are offensive to the left today. Suppose, extremists decided to blow up streets, university buildings, or statues that were erected or dedicated to honor people on the left whom we might disagree with but we honor none-the-less. We are not headed in a good direction and the Philistinism behavior that attempts to erase and destroy a part of our history needs to be stopped.

Long ago on this site, I chose the nym JohnQC, the abbreviated version of John Q. Citizen, an internet name to represent just a regular guy like Joe the Plumber or John Doe. I am not an "ist" or follow some "ism." I am just an aging American approaching my 8th decade and saddened by what I see. I am not a National Socialist or a fascist or a skinhead (albeit a little bereft of hair). I don't think of myself as being particularly left or right. Like many college students, I was a bit left-leaning but believed in the miracle which is the U.S. Over many years, I have evolved into a Constitutional conservative as many people do after becoming a "seasoned citizen." You may have experienced similar transitions over time for some of the same reasons discussed below.

The Constitution as well as the Declaration of Independence were brilliant documents. These are documents which represent the basic agreement by which we live in America. The Constitution is the basis of our law. The document even provides the mechanism for changing or amending it if we choose to do so. If we do not follow this basic agreement, we become lawless and head towards anarchy, statism and the tyranny of the mob that follows from casting aside the basic laws of our country. We see signs of this tyranny in our streets today.

We are at that place in our history where we are in danger of anarchy with the blessings of too many elected officials. In 2008 after his election, Barack Obama spoke about the "fundamental transformation of the nation." We knew little about what he meant at the time. We are still experiencing that "fundamental transformation" and it is not good. Many of us who did not vote for Obama, took the attitude of let's wait and see how he does. Perhaps, his election will get the country over a few rough bumps from an at-times rocky past history. That did not happen and it seems his election only exacerbated problems and made things worse. Barack Obama seemed to pick at the healed scabs of our history. The country moved towards the radical left and increasing tyranny--a tyranny like we have not seen before. We are witnessing Obama's legacy today. It is a legacy of "community organizing" replacing the rule of law. It is a legacy where mob rule and anarchy have replaced law. Moreover, I doubt that those in the street ever question who funds their efforts or what those funders represent. These mobs are not just spontaneous flash mobs. They are well-organized and well-funded efforts by the extreme left to replace our Republic. With what? Communism? Anarchy? These movements are replete with failures and the large-scale slaughter slaughter of citizens. There is a need to look at these puppeteers who pull the strings and think they have a better answer to government than our Democratic Republic form. We have fought off external threats of Communism and fascism over time and survived.

Now we are in the gravest of danger from internal threats. We witness the streets being taken over by mobs. We witness their destruction of the property of others. We witness their violence against others who speak out or disagree with them. We see the attempts at the destruction of religion, property rights, law, and now the destruction and erasure of history. It is like a cancer in gnawing away at the fabric of our country.

The Antifascists are really fascists with a different name, communists. Fascists or communists, they are statists with tyranny in mind. With some, it is not that complicated, they are just angry, unhappy and some with serious mental issues who want to see everything torn down. They try to legitimize what they do by glomming on to some movement that thinly cloaks sedition and treasonous behavior.

The corporate media has done us a great disservice by choosing a side. They, like the Deep State, tend to be left-wing or what is today called a Democrat. The corporate media has, in a sense, abdicated its necessary role in a free state; that of a free press. How do they do a disservice to citizens? They publish propaganda and disinformation. They fail to properly vet our candidates who are up for election or re-lection. They fail us by reporting news in a biased manner. These things taken together, make it difficult for hard-working people to obtain the information which they need to make informed decisions--to participate in government in a meaningful way. Instead, the want to be the arbiters of our elections.

The parallels with National Socialist Germany in its ascendancy (or more properly descendancy) are frightening. Similarly, with the Communist takeovers of other countries. If we continue on this path, dire things are likely to come which seems to be the goal of those spreading chaos.

#1  Bravo!

The role the media plays is the scariest part. Everybody is expected to say certain things when an event like this occurs. Anybody who sees a more complex picture is labeled a NAZI. Just because I see Antifa and BLM for what they are doesn't mean I'm a NAZI. The whole story never gets presented. Really, really scary.

#2  I fear that so many feel so helpless. What are regular citizens to in fighting the commercial behemoths who seek to chain our thinking and silence our speech. The feeling of helplessness is worsened because so many of those in public office seem to thrown in their lot with the orcs. It leaves the individual with nothing to do but think of sabotage. A little wrench thrown into the works of these bastards, every day, sometimes several times a day might slow them down if the actions are taken by millions. People need to start thinking how to make these bad guy's days worse in every way. Make them pay.

Soldiers and Contractors lose - Court Deals Major Blow to Veterans Suing Over Burn Pits
[Mil.com] A federal judge has dismissed a major lawsuit against a defense contractor by veterans and their family members, over burn pit operations in Iraq and Afghanistan that plaintiffs said caused them chronic and sometimes deadly respiratory diseases and cancer.

In the decision, U.S. District Court Judge Roger W. Titus wrote that the company, KBR, could not be held liable for what was essentially a military decision to use burn pits for waste disposal. Titus said holding the Pentagon responsible was outside of his jurisdiction.

"The extensive evidence ... demonstrates that the mission-critical, risk-based decisions surrounding the use and operation of open burn pits ... were made by the military as a matter of military wartime judgment," Titus wrote in an 81-page opinion.

The dismissal -- the second by Titus in the case -- deals a major blow to the more than 700 veterans, family members and former KBR employees who brought the suit.

CNN’s Symone Sanders Calls Out White Pundit Who Told Her To ‘Shut Up’ On Live TV (Video)
[Huff Poo] CNN’s Symone Sanders will not be spoken down to, and she made this message loud and clear during a segment on Monday morning’s episode of "New Day."
Pouty lips will swell whilst blood pressure elevates.
The segment, which was hosted by Chris Cuomo and centered on the white supremacist-led rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, included an ugly exchange between Sanders, a former spokeswoman for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, and Ken Cuccinelli, a Republican politician. At one point, Cuccinelli directed Sanders to "just shut up" while he spoke.

His remarks came amid a discussion about the circumstances that led to Saturday’s rally. Sanders said Cuccinelli was "dismissing" the real danger of white supremacy and reminded him of how the violent demonstration was an "egregious symptom" of America’s widespread issues of racism.

Moments later, after Sanders briefly interrupted Cuccinelli to acknowledge the death that resulted from the rally, he replied: "Will you just shut up and let me finish, Simone?"
Sanders briefly interrupted ???
Sanders immediately shut him down.
Rubbish! The usual cart of leftest Huff Poo rubbish and FAKE news.

Spengler: The triumph of inequality
[PJMedia] We spent a great deal of time talking about inequality of opportunity and outcomes. The tech industry is fanatically progressive in its opinions, as the unfortunate James Damore, formerly of Google, recently learned. The tech industry's drivel about diversity and equality masks a guilty conscience: Digital technology creates inequality of a kind we have never seen before in human history.

Instead of talking about inequality of outcomes, suppose we talked about inequality of knowledge?

Three hundred years ago, pretty much everyone knew how their technology work. Europe had lived for a millennium on the innovations of the Carolingian Renaissance: the water wheel, the horse collar and three-field crop rotation. Everyone knew how a water wheel worked. Water pushed the paddles and gears turned the millstones. Not everyone knew how a steam engine worked, but a lot of people did. The same applied to internal combustion engines.

...The great divide is not between black and white, male and female,We are turning into two races: Eloi who play video games and Morlocks who program them. The July 3 New York Times reported, "By 2015, American men 31 to 55 were working about 163 fewer hours a year than that same age group did in 2000. Men 21 to 30 were working 203 fewer hours a year...video games have been responsible for reducing the amount of work that young men do by 15 to 30 hours over the course of a year. Between 2004 and 2015, young men’s leisure time grew by 2.3 hours a week. A majority of that increase -- 60 percent -- was spent playing video games."

#1  Video Games? The new '50s devil of the comic book straw man?

Since Obamacare, working more than 28 hours a week becomes a economical disincentive to employers. More like government mandated time off.

The boys are playing more and watching TV less. Interactive vs passive entertainment. Gamergate showed which audience won't put up with SJW encroachment and where the consumer immediately effects the bottom line the seller. Those companies generally are not protected by large corporations which can shift monies around to cover bad products and bad decisions by their management. [Insert here whining from the SJW about the unequal outcome of that]

#2  I've gotten to meet Mr. Goldman and found him to be quite erudite, intense and broadly knowledgeable.

I can guarantee that he is using video games metaphorically not literally. Many years ago James Burke did a couple of series on this phenomenon. Look up "Connections" and "The day the Universe Changed". They are very interesting and informative. (Extra points if you can find the topless scene)

This is pretty much nailed by the commercial "That's not how this works; that's not how any of this works." I also suggest that you reread "The Time Machine" to remember exactly what Eloi and Morlochs are.

#3  Just rewatched The Day the Universe Changed last week or so. Both should be mandatory in our education system. Along with a little factoid, that if you make 18,000 (US) dollars a year, you are in the top 4 percent of the worlds population. Then ask would you like to join those 96 percent by 'killing the goose that laid the golden egg'?

#4  P2k, I tried to do that a couple of years ago when I was a substitute middle school teacher.

End of the year doldrums meant that I had 3 days of time to "monitor" the classes while the year ended. I suggested that I show the kids DTUC since I own a copy and figured it would be better than the cartoon (literally) show that was scheduled. Was told " no way I should show such controversial material !!"

I stopped subbing when Common Core was mandated and learning abandoned.

#5  ...video games have been responsible for reducing the amount of work that young men do by 15 to 30 hours over the course of a year.
The Arrow of Causation is as backwards as saying that 'pigeons are caused by droppings on windshields'. At the same time: tell people that low-skilled jobs are "beneath them", raise minimum wages so there are fewer jobs, and provide financial incentives to support non-workers. First Cloward-Pliven and then the Gulags where people are forced to work at whatever the State requires.

The transgender madness has got to stop
[IsraelNationalNews] ...The knee-jerk tendency to assume (and wish?) that people are transgender has become so pervasive that anyone who shows interest in that which is not wholly typical for his or her gender is suspected of very likely being "trans". While such thinking is foolish and myopic, reflecting a mind tightly locked in a socially-progressive bubble, it is also downright dangerous.

...Placing in young children’s minds the notion that they are likely of a different gender is dangerous and sends messages of confusion. And what happens later when children mature and are in a different phase, suddenly showing an interest in that which better matches their gender? Would a female-born "trans boy" who is now attracted to males and who now prefers makeup over boxing be deemed to have become a "double-trans girl", or some other conjured-up classification invented by those who reject the gender that was divinely-assigned at birth?

...Let us allow people to be as God created them and not impose on them the artificial and damaging categories that social progressives contrive in an effort to tamper with nature and truth.
IMO, the biggest problem of leftism (including national socialism) is that they just don't get "wanting isn't getting"

Buchanan: If We Erase Our History, Who Are We?
[Townhall] When the Dodge Charger of 20-year-old Nazi sympathizer James Alex Fields Jr., plunged into that crowd of protesters Saturday, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer, Fields put Charlottesville on the map of modernity alongside Ferguson.

Before Fields ran down the protesters, and then backed up, running down more, what was happening seemed but a bloody brawl between extremists on both sides of the issue of whether Robert E. Lee's statue should be removed from Emancipation Park, formerly Lee Park.

With Heyer's death, the brawl was elevated to a moral issue. And President Donald Trump's initial failure to denounce the neo-Nazi and Klan presence was declared a moral failure.

How did we get here, and where are we going?

In June of 2015, 21-year-old Dylann Roof gunned down nine Christians at an evening Bible study in Charleston's Emanuel AME Church. A review of Roof's selfies and website showed him posing with the Confederate battle flag.

Gov. Nikki Haley, five years in office, instantly pivoted and called for removal of the battle flag from the Confederate war memorial on the State House grounds, as a "deeply offensive symbol of a brutally offensive past."

This ignited a national clamor to purge all statues that lionize Confederate soldiers and statesmen.

In Maryland, demands have come for removing statues and busts of Chief Justice Roger Taney, the author of the Dred Scott decision. Statues of Gen. "Stonewall" Jackson, President Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee have been pulled down in New Orleans.

#4  We need to remember our history. All of it. The good and the bad. The noble and the dark side of our past as a nation. We haven't allways lived the ideals our founders espoused in the Declaration and Constitution. One of the problems with those who would impose their view of morality or social justice today on the past is they are all too often willing to find fault in all the actions of former generations. I can admire the courage displayed by the average Southern soldier during the American Civil War. Just as I can admire the courage of the men in the Irish or Iron Brigades. But I can also understand what the root cause of the ACW was. And how it still affects our lives today. And that cause was slavery. I can also understand how some elements in society both the North and South benifited keeping other human beings in bondage. And why some saw it as morally repungnent. It was the radicals on both sides that touched off actual conflict. Starting in Kansas and leading to prehaps the most divisive presidential election on American history. That of 1860. The question today is do we let the radicals on both sides drag us down the path again.

#5  Got to remember, the globalists are trying to destroy national identity. Thus the destruction of history as a common shared experience. In doing so they miss the warning that those 'evil' statutes represent, a form of tribalism. Those southerners were manipulated by their leadership to die to preserve their interests by exploiting the tribal identification which in 1860 was the state not the nation. They fought with their tribe be they Virginia, Georgia, Texas et al. They miss the warning of the break up of their Soviet Union along lines of long established tribes, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, et al. Their own practice of exploiting race, gender et al is just another form of tribalism. What they can't grasp that in their own efforts they are in the process of creating an even bigger tribe which they do not and can not control. When they erase their history, they remove the anchoring of those inherit aspects of Western Civ which includes tolerance and mercy that are so lacking in the history of other cultures. They will inherit the consequence.

#6  It's democrats removing statues that democrats put up. They own all of this - they are masters and commanders of all of this bullshit.

Charlottesville, truth, and the new cultural revolution
[American Thinker] Those who control the narrative control the truth. Following Charlottesville, all must understand the broader context of current events ‐ the conservative movement (not to be confused with media-created Alt-Right or white nationalists) desires the restoration of America's founding principles, as documented in the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights.

The principles of freedom are universal (all men) and are granted by God. Our founding documents enshrined these rights, and were "exceptional" in their development and institutionalization.

There is a counter-movement that seeks America's destruction and the imposition of a new covenant, predicated on the wisdom of man or, more particularly, a select group of men, who seek to manage the affairs of all man.

These two contradictory principles are reflected as liberty and tyranny. Freedom and totalitarianism. Charlottesville was a "shot heard 'round the world" of the opening salvo in the final battle between these two worldviews.

What is remarkable (about our current culture) is the virtue-signaling and moral superiority maintained by those who control the dominant (leftist) narrative. It is not possible, as President Trump asserted, that "all parties" are to blame for the violence perpetrated at the ill-named "Unite The Right" event in Charlottesville. The left controls the narrative and has a lock on what is determined to be "hate."
