#4  Marie Doro (born Marie Katherine Stewart; May 25, 1882 - October 9, 1956) was an American stage and film actress of the early silent film era. Classical stage and movie actress Marie Doro was a direct descendant of American political leader Patrick Henry. She was born Marie Katherine Steward in Pennsylvania in 1882. She began as a chorus girl in musical comedy under the management of impresario Charles Frohman, who took her to Broadway. There she worked for actor/stage director William Gillette, appearing in many melodramas, thrillers and comedies including "The Admirable Crichton" in 1903, "Sherlock Holmes" in 1905-06, "Electricity" in 1910 and "Diplomacy" in 1914 est. On tour of England in the mid-1900s, she starred with the unknown teenage Charles Chaplin. She starred in at least 18 movies, first under contract to Adolph Zukor in 1915, making her film debut in the starring role as Carlotta in Edwin S. Porter's comedy/drama The Morals of Marcus (1915) for the Famous Players Film Co. She is perhaps best remembered in the title role in Oliver Twist (1916), directed by James Young for the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Co. in 1916.

Although still a well-known movie star by the early 1920s, she became increasingly disillusioned with Hollywood and her acting career. She returned to the Broadway stage for one last time in "Lillies of the Field" in 1921. She moved to Europe for a time and starred in a few films in Italy and England, the last being Maurice Elvey's )Sally Bishop (1924)_ in 1924,' co-starring with Henry Ainley in the Stoll Film Co. production. In later life she became increasingly drawn to a more spiritual life, and ended as a recluse, actively avoiding friends and acquaintances. She was briefly married to actor Elliott Dexter, the marriage soon ending in divorce. She had no children and never remarried

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Downtown Louisville is blocked off after suspicious package of white cylinders with wires is found at bus stop
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Five white cylinders with wires were found at a Louisville, Kentucky, bus stop around 8am on Friday

  • Jefferson Street between Third and Sixth streets was shut down as a bomb squad investigated and removed the suspicious package

  • The bomb squad was seen releasing a robot from an armored vehicle, which then rolled toward the bus stop and placed the device into a black bin

  • All people confined within the area were asked to shelter in place by police until about 1.30pm.

  • All traffic has resumed in the area with the exception of vehicle traffic on Jefferson between 4th to 5th streets

  • The bus stop is located near City Hall and Metro Hall and it is unclear who discovered the suspicious package
A test? Local news station WHAS11 (linked by the Daily Mail article as a source) has video and a photo of the thing, and it looks like a cartoon bomb, not something serious.

#2  Downloaded the Channel 11 photo to zoom in a bit and I see more tubing than wiring. All the wires appear to be attached to the small free-floating circuit board (which looks like it could be a simple low-voltage valve control of some sort) and not to the taller cylinders themselves. There is a short squat plastic container that I can't really see well though, and can't say if anything was connected to that.

Afghanistan
Suicide Attack Kills Taliban Prominent Cleric in Afghan Capital, Funeral in Jalalabad
[KhaamaPress] Sheikh Rahimullah Haqqani, a prominent Taliban
...Arabic for students...
figure, was killed in a suicide kaboom on a seminary in Kabul, the Afghan capital, on Thursday when the attacker blew explosives placed in a prosthetic leg, according to Taliban authorities and sources.

Taliban’s deputy spokesperson, Bilal Karimi, confirmed the veracity of the incident and stated that the earth-shattering kaboom happened in the Shash Darak area of Kabul’s Police District 2 "martyred" Sheikh Rahimullah Haqqani.

According to four Taliban sources, the assailant had previously lost a leg and had stashed the explosives in a plastic prosthetic leg, Rooters reported.

He had previously been a target of the Islamic State

(IS) group, albeit it is now unclear who killed him as no group has grabbed credit.

Sheikh Haqqani was a steadfast opponent of the Islamic State Khorasan Province (IS-K), and a supporter of the Taliban administration.

He was among the Taliban officials who supported the education of women and girls, in a BBC interview, he stated that no rationale in Sharia law prohibits female education.

Since taking control when international forces began to withdraw almost a year ago, the Taliban claim to have restored security. However,

Sheikh Rahimullah Haqqani's Funeral Held in Jalalabad

"This is a significant loss for Afghan science, for Afghanistan, and for the Mujahideen. The Mujahideen lost a capable coach and instructor," said Higher Education Minister Mawlawi Abdul Baqi Haqqani.

In addition to Rahimullah Haqqani, two other people were also killed and six people were maimed in this incident.

Prior to this, Rahimullah Haqqani was in charge of a religious school in Peshawar; once the Islamic Emirate returned to power, he moved the institution to Kabul.
Radio Free Europe adds:
A prominent Hanafi cleric and supporter of the Taliban has been killed in an explosion in Kabul, a spokesman for the Taliban-led government said on August 11.

Rahimullah Haqqani was killed "in an attack carried out by a cowardly enemy" in his religious school, said Bilal Karimi, the deputy spokesman for the Taliban government.

The government has not commented further on the attack, which several news reports said was carried out by a suicide bomber inside Haqqani's madrasah, a school for religious education.

One of Haqqani's brothers was also killed in the attack, said Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran. Three other people were wounded, Zadran said.

The extremist Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, according to its channel on Telegram.

Haqqani was one of the most "prominent advocates for the Taliban and one of the biggest of them who incited to fight," the jihadist-monitoring SITE Intelligence Group said, quoting a statement from Islamic State.

RFE/RL's Radio Azadi quoted a source as saying a disabled person attacked Haqqani and that at least six other people were killed. The attacker was someone who had previously lost his leg and hid the explosives in a plastic prosthesis, according to Reuters, quoting four unidentified sources.

Haqqani, originally from Nangarhar Province, was an important Taliban supporter and a famous scholar of Hanafi Islam. He was known for having heated religious discussions with Salafi religious scholars.

Although nothing is known about Haqqani's official position in the Taliban government, he was said to be a member of the Taliban Ulama Council.

He had hundreds of religious students in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and some of the current ruling Taliban officials are also among his students.

"Rahimullah Haqqani was an admirer of Taliban suicide bombers in the past, and eventually he became a victim of a suicide attack himself," Sami Yousafzai, an Afghan journalist told Radio Azadi.

Another famous scholar of the Salafist religion, Sardar Wali Saqib, was mysteriously killed on July 13 at his home in Kabul.

Tunisia soldiers hurt in clash with jihadist suspects
[AlAhram] Two Tunisian soldiers were maimed on Friday in an exchange of fire with suspected jihadists during a military operation in a mountainous region of the south, the defence ministry said.

The shootout happened at Mount Salloum near the town of Kasserine close to the border with Algeria, where jihadists operate, local media reported.
That’s Jund Al Khilafa-Tunisia (JAK-T) — ISIS in Tunisia — territory, according to our archives, though in theory it might be Al Qaeda in North Africa.
"There was an exchange of fire between soldiers and a group of Lions of Islam in the Kasserine area," defence ministry front man Mohammed Zekri told AFP.

"There were maimed among the Lions of Islam who fled," he said, adding that two soldiers were slightly maimed.

The most recent similar clash was in March when suspected jihadists opened fire on a national guard barracks in the city of Kairouan, some 150 kilometres (90 miles) east of Kasserine.

After the 2011 revolution, Tunisia saw a boom in jihadist groups which launched attacks that killed dozens of tourists -- notably at the seaside resort of Sousse and at the Bardo National Museum in the capital -- as well as security personnel.

In March 2016, an assault on security positions in Ben Guerdane near the border with Libya killed 13 members of the security forces and seven civilians.

At least 55 jihadists were also killed and dozens arrested.

The authorities say they have made significant progress in the fight against "terrorism", with no attack on that scale having taken place since.

Mali declares 3 days of mourning after attacks kill dozens
[DW] The attacks were blamed on Islamist groups, and it marks the second three-day mourning period this year as the country struggles to deal with years of insurgency.

Authorities in Mali have declared three days of mourning beginning Thursday after a pair of terror attacks killed dozens of soldiers over the weekend.

In the most deadly incident, 42 soldiers were killed and 22 others injured in an attack on Sunday near the town of Tessit in the Gao Region. The government said the "complex and coordinated attack" involved drones, boom-mobiles and artillery, blaming an affiliate of the so-called "Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. Later that day, five coppers were killed when gunnies attacked a cop shoppe in the town of Sona, near the border with Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
. Soulaimane Traore, director-general of the national police, said three other officers remain missing. The following day, gunnies belonging to the al-Qaeda affiliate group JNIM grabbed credit.

A COUNTRY IN CRISIS
Mali is ruled by a military junta after Colonel Assimi Goita overthrew the democratic government in 2020, in part over frustration at its failure to rein in years of insurgency. Terrorist attacks have nevertheless remained common.

After Goita's coup, Mali's traditional security partner and former colonizer, La Belle France, withdrew its military forces. Observers fear this has created a power vacuum for yet more attacks to occur.

The country now looks to Russia and Russia-backed mercinaries from the Wagner group for equipment, training and support.

In June this year, the current leadership announced another three-day mourning period after members of the Katibat Macina Islamist group massacred 132 civilians in Diallassagou and two surrounding villages in the Mopti Region.

Tunisia says 82 migrants intercepted or rescued
[An Nahar] Tunisian authorities intercepted five new migration attempts overnight and rescued or intercepted 82 people, the interior ministry said on Friday.

National Guard units "from the north, center, south and coast" of Tunisia foiled the attempts "as part of the fight against irregular migration", a statement said.

Tunisia is a key departure point for migrants colonists hoping to reach Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
-- usually Italia -- and sea crossing attempts tend to increase during spring and summer.

Friday's statement said 76 people were rescued in four operations at sea, and another six were intercepted on land in the Gabes and Sfax areas.

It did not provide details the nationalities of the migrants colonists or report on the condition of the boats they used.

The statement said that both Tunisian and foreign currency were seized, although the amounts were not specified.

Media in the North African country reported a shipwreck on Tuesday off the Kerkennah islands in which eight Tunisians -- three women, four children and a man -- died. Another 20 people were saved.

And on Sunday, the National Guard said that 170 people from sub-Saharan Africa were among 255 migrants colonists intercepted during 17 attempted crossings.

Tunisia and Libya are the main points of departure for migrants colonists trying to reach Europe from Africa.

Tunisia is in the throes of political and economic crises, and Libya has been gripped by lawlessness since 2011 that has seen militias turn to people trafficking.

Italian authorities say 34,000 people arrived in the country by sea up to July 22 this year, compared with 25,500 over the same period in 2021 and 10,900 in 2020.

Germany suspends military operations in Mali
[An Nahar] The German defense ministry said Friday it had suspended most of its operations in Mali after the local military-led government denied flyover rights to a UN peacekeeping mission.

"The Malian government has once again refused to give flyover rights to a flight planned today" for the rotation of personnel on the ground, a ministry front man said at a regular presser.

In response, Germany had decided to "suspend until further notice the operations of our reconnaissance forces and CH-53 (helicopter) transport flights".

"It is no longer possible to support the MINUSMA reconnaissance missions on an operational basis," the front man said.

Without the new troops, who were set to "replace French forces" in the process of withdrawing, "security on site is not assured" as the "remaining forces must be kept ready for security operations."

The flyover rights were refused despite assurances to the contrary from the Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara in a call with his German counterpart Christine Lambrecht Thursday, the front man said.

"Camara's actions tell a different story than his words," Lambrecht said in a statement posted by her ministry on Twitter.

The German move comes as Mali's junta turned away from La Belle France and toward Russia in its fight against jihadism.

The long-running insurgency has claimed thousands of lives and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes.

The relationship between Bamako and Gay Paree, its former colonial power and traditional ally, has tanked in recent months.

The arrival of Russian paramilitaries in the country on the invitation of the government was a key factor in La Belle France's decision to pull its military forces out.

The withdrawal is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

Arabia
Southern Yemeni leader assassinated in Shabwah
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] A big shot in the Southern revolutionary movement (al-Hirak al-Janubi), has been killed on Thursday by button men in Shabwah province, southeastern Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
Local sources said that unknown button men shot at the head of the media department of the Supreme Council of the Revolutionary Movement in Shabwah governorate, Humam Hadi bin Laksar, as he was leaving his home in the Rawdha area, abruptly ejecting him from the gene pool.

It is not yet known who is responsible for the liquidation, but it comes in light of the escalation of differences between the southern factions, coinciding with the efforts of the UAE-backed Transitional Council (STC), to eliminate all its opponents, where it is strongly opposed by most of the southern components.

Shabwah Governorate has been witnessing unprecedented tension after bloody battles between the coalition factions, amid fears that the direct fighting will move to the stage of mutual liquidation, similar to what happened in Aden, following the confrontations between the STC and Islah gunnies in early 2019, which ended with the expulsion of Islah from the city.

Saudi Arabia says wanted man blows himself up during arrest
[An Nahar] A man wanted by security officials in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
killed himself with an boom belt to avoid arrest, wounding four others in the blast, the kingdom said Friday.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency, citing the Saudi State Security Presidency, identified the dead man as Abdullah bin Zayed al-Shehri.

The report said as security forces moved in on him Wednesday in the Saudi city of Jeddah, al-Shehri detonated the bomb belt. The report identified the maimed as a Pak national and three security officials.

The report offered no details on al-Shehri's background, nor if he belonged to any known Death Eater group.

The kingdom has battled al-Qaeda and Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. Death Eaters.
How very odd. It calls to mind the brother of the Al Qaeda in Yemen bomb maker, who prematurely went kaboom while alone in the waiting room of one of the Saudi princes year ago. As I recall, he was one of the early rectal bombers, and the formula was not quite finalized.
I'm assured Taco Bell has perfected the Rectal Bomb

NJ man, Hadi Matar, with sympathies toward Iranian government ID'd as suspect in Salman Rushdie stabbing
More on this story from yesterday.
[NYPOST] The man arrested in Friday’s stabbing of famed novelist Salman Rushdie was identified by police as a New Jersey man, who law enforcement sources tell The Post he had sympathies toward the Iranian government that has called for Rushdie’s death.

Hadi Matar, 24, of Fairview, New Jersey, was arrested after he stormed the stage at the Chautauqua Institution in Western New York and allegedly stabbed the author multiple times, New York State Police said Friday.

Rushdie suffered stab wounds to the neck and abdomen, and remained in surgery at a nearby trauma center Friday evening, according to police.

Law enforcement sources told The Post that an initial investigation suggests Matar has made social media posts in support of Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
and its Revolutionary Guard, and in support of Shi’a extremism more broadly.

New York State Police, however, said that Matar’s motive remained unclear.

"We don’t have any indication of a motive at this time," Major Eugene J. Staniszewski told news hounds. He added that police believe Matar acted alone.

Regardless, the attack comes amid a slew of foiled Iranian plots on American soil, including a plot against former National Security Advisor John Bolton and an apparent attempt on the life of an Iranian-American journalist in Brooklyn.

Rushdie, 75, has been the subject of death threats from the Iranian regime since the late 1980s.

His 1988 novel "The Satanic Verses" was considered blasphemous by some Moslems, and led to Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issuing a fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie’s death in 1989.

In 1991, two translators involved in the book’s publication abroad were stabbed — one fatally.

By the late 90’s, the Iranian government said the fatwa would not be carried out.

But as recently as 2012 a semi-official religious organization inside Iran placed an over $3 million bounty on the author’s head, and in 2019 Khomeni’s successor was temporarily banned from twitter for calling for Rushdie’s death.

The author was stabbed ahead of a planned talk about "the United States as [an] asylum for writers and other artists in exile and as a home for freedom of creative expression," according to the institution’s website.

Charges against Matar have not yet been announced.

'WATCH: IDF aborts attack on Islamic Jihad outpost due to presence of little girl
[Jpost] The Israeli military can be seen tracking the girl to ensure she is a safe distance away before conducting the strike on the post.

The IDF released footage Friday evening showing the Israeli forces delay a planned strike on an outpost belonging to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza due to the presence of a young Palestinian girl.

In the footage taken during Operation Breaking Dawn, the Israeli military can be seen tracking the girl to ensure she is a safe distance away before conducting the strike on the post.

The strike occurred last Friday, shortly following the announcement of the Gaza operation, and was meant as an attempt to draw first blood in the battle against Islamic Jihad.

Maj. 'B,' a commander in the Armored Corps' 7th Armored Brigade who took part in the attack, said the forces acted "ethically, professionally and with precision."

"As we received approval to fire at the outpost, the tank crew identified a child along with a man in the vicinity of the strike target," Maj. 'B' recalled. "Due to the presence of civilians, the tank commander immediately called to halt fire. We stood by until the two were no longer in the area."

"Following several minutes, the crew successfully carried out the attack," he added.

A new trip of Iraqi nationals leaves Syria's al-Hole towards Iraq
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

On Friday, 150 Iraqi families left Hawl Camp east of Hasakah, northeast Syria, and headed to their country, years after residing in the camp.

The trip included 150 families numbering 620 individuals, and they headed towards al-Jad’a Camp south of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
in Nineveh Governorate.

Last week, an Iraqi delegation of the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displaced visited the camp in order to register names of individuals and families that wanted to get out of the Hawl camp.

A well informed source from the camp told North Press, "Two weeks after the visit of the Iraqi delegation, 150 families numbering 620 individuals have been taken out of the camp."

"This is the sixth trip to take Iraqis out of the camp in 15 months," the source added.

Between 2019 and 2020, the Iraqi government abstained from repatriating its nationals from the camp due to demands by tribal leaders not to repatriate them, accusing them of being members of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Organization (ISIS), according to refugees.

Iraqi refugees in the Hawl Camp demand that their country accelerates measures to repatriate them to Iraq in light of the continuation of murders and dire security conditions in the camp.

Hawl Camp, 45 km east of the city of Hasakah, is a house for 55.829 individuals, including 28.725 Iraqis, 18.850 Syrians and 8.254 of foreign nationalities, according to the latest statistics obtained by North Press. The camp is dubbed as one of the most dangerous camps worldwide for housing thousands of families of the ISIS fighters.

Co-chair of IDPs and Refugees Affairs of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), Sheikhmos Ahmad, in previous statements to North Press, called on the Iraqi government to accelerate measures to get Iraqis out of the camp.

Following pressure by the US-led Global Coalition and coordination between the AANES and the Iraqi government, trips to repatriate Iraqis resumed in 2021.

Since mid-2021, six trips of Iraqi families have been taken out of the camp to al-Jad’a Camp east Iraq.
Al Ahram adds:
More than 100 people, including many women, were murdered in al-Hol over an 18-month period, the United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
said in June

In addition to the returned family members, the Iraqi government also received this week about 50 Iraqi IS fighters and leaders who were detained by the Syrian Democratic Forces, according to the Observatory.

In early June, Iraq repatriated another 50 Iraqi IS fighters who were detained by Kurdish forces. They were among 3,500 Iraqis held in Syrian Kurdish prisons, a senior military official said at the time.
