[ToloNews] At least five security force members were killed and two others were maimed in festivities with the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
in the northern province of Balkh on Wednesday night, local officials said on Thursday.

The festivities took place in Dawlatabad district of the province after the Talban attacked the center of the district from several direction, said Munir Ahmad Farhad, a front man for provincial governor.

"The festivities lasted for more than two hours and the Taliban beat feet from the area," he said.

But security sources said that at least eight security force members were killed and 14 others were maimed in the attack.

However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
the Taliban has not yet commented on the attack.

Ghazni: 4 Civilians Wounded in Rocket Attack During Ghani's Visit
[ToloNews] President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money...
on Thursday visited Ghazni city and made a speech acknowledging the danger facing the province.

During his visit, at least four Afghan civilians were maimed in rocket attacks on Ghazni city as Ghani was in the province meeting with local officials.

This is Ghani’s third provincial visit since his inauguration as president on March 9. Previously, Ghani visited Kapisa and Pashtun-infested Logar provinces.

TOLOnews spoke with those injured in the attack.

"A customer came in I moved to give him the things when a kaboom happened, then I saw my cousin lying on the ground," said Faisal, a shopkeeper in Ghazni who was maimed in the rocket attack.

"I was in the shop when the attack happened and I was maimed," said Mohammad, a Ghazni resident.

Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, Bossy was furiously chewing her cud and thinking...
a member of Ghazni provincial council members said that six districts in the province are facing threats.

"Six districts are under the siege; there are problems in the three districts which are relatively peaceful," said Amanullah Kamrani, the deputy head of Ghazni provincial council.

During the trip, Ghani also pledged to address the security issues facing the Kabul-Kandahar highway.

"We have seen widespread attacks during the president’s trips; overall this shows the weakness of the security sector," said Rubina Jalali, a member of Afghan parliament.

No individual or group has so far claimed the credit for the rocket attacks on Ghazni.

In the US-Taliban
...Arabic for students...
peace agreement, signed between the two sides on February 29, the Taliban committed to not stage major attacks on the historic provincial capitals.

Nearly 20 civilians killed, wounded in clashes between Afghan and Pakistani forces
[KhaamaPress] At least 20 Afghan non-combatants were killed or maimed during a clash between the Afghan and Pak forces in eastern Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Chitral. Kunar is Haqqani country.....
of Afghanistan.

A source in the provincial government confirmed that that 8 civilians bit the dust and at least 11 others sustained injurires during the clash between Afghan and Pak forces in Sarkanoo district.

The source further added that the Pak forces fired several mortar rounds on Sarkano district after attempting to establish security posts inside the Afghan soil which the Afghan forces prevented.

Fareed Dehqan, a spokesperson for the provincial police headquarters confirmed the incident and said the Pak forces fired multiple rounds of mortars on bordering regions in Nawapas area.

The clash between the two sides reportedly continued for several hours.

The Afghan and Pak authorities have not formally commented regarding the incident so far.

U.S. forces launched multiple drone strikes in 3 provinces: Taliban
[KhaamaPress] The Taliban
...Arabic for students...
group has claimed that the U.S. forces based in Afghanistan carried out multiple dronezaps in three provinces of Afghanistan.

"The American forces, today, committed a violation of the Agreement by launching several dronezaps in non-combat zones in Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
, Ghazni and Zabul provinces. It is unacceptable to the Islamic Emirate and condemns it," Suhail Shaheen, a spokesperson for the political office of Taliban said late on Thursday.

The dronezaps, if confirmed, follow an unprecedented violence led by the Taliban group during the recent months.

The United States and Taliban signed a peace deal late in the month of February of this year in a bid to pave the way for intra-Afghan talks aimed at ending the ongoing violence.

However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
the Afghan officials say the Taliban not only reduced their violence by increased their attacks against the Afghan forces and civilians following the signing of peace deal.

Sudan: Thousands protest repeal of Islamic restrictions
Thousands! Thousands, I tells yez!
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
Dozens protest against Sudan reforms
[Al Ahram] Dozens of Sudanese protested in the capital Khartoum Friday against recent government reforms they consider anti-Islamic, including allowing non-Muslims to drink alcohol, an AFP correspondent said.

Justice Minister Nasredeen Abdulbari said last Saturday that Muslim-majority Sudan now "allows non-Muslims to consume alcohol on the condition it doesn't disturb the peace and they don't do so in public".

He also said that converting from Islam to another religion would be decriminalised.

The announcements came a day after the country criminalised female genital mutilation.

Protesters took to the streets of Khartoum after Muslim prayers Friday in the east and north of the capital, an AFP correspondent said.

They shouted slogans including, "God's laws shall not be replaced" and carried banners reading "No to secularism".

"Hamdok, Khartoum is not New York," other protesters cried, addressing Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, who leads Sudan's transitional government.

Late last month, Hamdok had pledged to announce decisions that "may have a major impact" in the country.

Security forces blocked streets in central Khartoum and bridges connecting the capital with its twin city of Omdurman, the AFP correspondent said.

Unprecedented popular protests that kicked off in Sudan in December 2018 led to the ousting of Islamist president Omar al-Bashir in April last year after 30 years in power and set the course for civilian rule.

Islamists largely stayed on the sidelines of the nationwide demonstrations.

Oregon will sue federal police agencies, open criminal investigation into use of force
But of course.
[OregonLive] Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum announced late Friday that her office would sue several federal law enforcement agencies over their response to Portland protests and launch a criminal investigation into an incident of force by federal officers.

Rosenblum is seeking a temporary restraining order to stop federal officers from detaining Portlanders, arguing federal agencies seized and detained Oregonians without probable cause. She said the state’s lawsuit in federal court will name the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Federal Protection Service as defendants.

Chicago police, protesters clash near Columbus statue in Grant Park
[FoxNews] Rioters were heard chanting, “Columbus was a murderer! Columbus was a thief!” reports say.

A protest near the Christopher Columbus statue in Chicago’s Grant Park turned violent Friday night, as the crowd started hurling objects at police officers who were guarding the statue, according to reports.

As conditions worsened, dozens of police officers arrived from across the city, FOX 32 of Chicago reported.

At least four police officers were injured at the scene, the report said.

At least a dozen rioters were taken into custody, a reporter from Chicago's WBBM-TV wrote on Twitter. One injured woman was seen with a bandaged head, being prepared for transport to a hospital, WBBM's Charlie De Mar reported.

The protest began at the park’s Buckingham Fountain, then the crowd moved to the Columbus statue, with some members throwing a rope around it – in an apparent attempt to topple it, the Chicago Tribune and Chicago's WGN-TV reported.

Rioters were heard chanting, “Columbus was a murderer! Columbus was a thief!” the newspaper reported.

As objects flew in the air toward police, some officers were seen hitting some members of the crowd with batons, the Tribune reported.

This is an escalation. Until now it appears from the reports that the "protesters" have mainly targeted public buildings on the west side of the Willamette. But you can't walk from Laurelhurst Park to E.Burnside and 47th without going through some pretty nice residential neighborhoods. I wonder how many shotguns were being racked along the route of march. (A lot of Portanders are liberal right up to the edge of their property lines.)

The Grand Turk
Seven Turkish security personnel die in reconnaissance flight
[Rudaw] Seven Ottoman Turkish security personnel died in a plane crash on a mountain in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
's Van province, the country’s interior minister told state media.
Everything is harder when your best people, and even your merely better ones, are locked up because the key marker of the target group is superior performance.
"Our teams have informed us that we have lost seven heroes, two of them are the pilots," Suleyman Soylu told journalists at Ferit Melen Airport, reported state media outlet Anadolu Agency.

No further information has been released so far about the cause of the crash.

According to the minister, the plane crash took place at an altitude of 2,200 meters (7218 feet) on Mount Artos, and was taking part in a reconnaissance and surveillance flight in Van and Hakkari provinces.

Turkey’s eastern provinces, the flight’s areas of operation, have been a site of fierce fighting between Ottoman Turkish forces and Kurdish murderous Moslems for decades.

Just to the south, Turkey began air and ground military operations in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq's disputed territories a month ago, with the stated aim of removing suspected Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) targets from the area.

The PKK is an gang fighting for Kurdish political and cultural rights in Turkey. It has been clashing with Ottoman Turkish forces inside and outside Turkey since 1984.

The interior minister later arrived at the scene of the crash.

Van provincial governor Mehmet Emin Bilmez announced a government investigation into the incident was underway, according to AFP.

Turkey arrests Daesh terror suspect wanted by Interpol
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]
Turkish security forces arrested a Daesh/ISIS terror suspect of French origin wanted by Interpol, security sources said on Friday.

After receiving information that a terrorist would enter Turkey from one of the conflict regions in Syria, Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and security forces conducted a joint operation in the borderline between Turkey and Syria, said the source, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

In the operation, a French national was arrested near Turkey’s southern Kilis province while he was trying to enter Turkey.

After identity checks, it was found that the terror suspect, identified by the initials O.G., was sought by an Interpol Red Notice.

The suspect is being interrogated.

Iraq
Iraqi military puts ISIS leaders in crosshairs
[Rudaw] Iraqi forces are focusing their operations on leadership of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) group, using information provided by the national intelligence services as international forces of the US-led coalition continue to draw down.

"The operations carried out by the intelligence services and security forces are carried out according to the intelligence efforts and under the guidance of the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and these operations target ISIS leaders," defence ministry spokesperson Yehia Rasool told state-media on Friday.

Iraqi forces killed the ISIS wali (governor) of Baghdad, Omer Shalal Abid, in an operation announced on Wednesday, alongside two other ISIS members.

Following the territorial defeat of ISIS in Iraq in late 2017, Baghdad has conducted targeted military operations against small groups and sleepers cells throughout the country.

The most recent operation, launched on Saturday, saw Kurdish counter-terrorism units joining Iraqi forces to clear areas in Diyala province, eastern Iraq. The goal of this, the fourth phase of the ’Heroes of Iraq’ operation, is to "pursue remnant murderous Moslems and impose security and stability in Diyala province, as well as clearing and inspecting the border strip with the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran," Abdul-Ameer Kamil al-Shamiri, deputy commander of Iraqi Joint Operations Command, announced at the time.

Phase one, announced in mid-May, included operations in Anbar, Nineveh, and Saladin provinces. Phase two began on June 2 and targeted ISIS holdouts on the fringes of Salahaddin and Kirkuk. The third phase covered Saladin, Diyala, Samarra, and Kirkuk provinces.

The US-led coalition provided Iraqi army units on the ground with air support alongside the Iraqi air force. The coalition has had troops on the ground in Iraq since 2014, training and advising Iraqi and Kurdish forces in the fight against ISIS. Over the border, they have also collaborated with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Iraq army commander killed in terror attack north of Baghdad: Security Media Cell
[Rudaw] A top commander in the Iraqi Army was killed late Friday in the al-Tarmia district, north of Baghdad in what the Security Media Cell labelled a terror attack.

"A terrorist action targeted a military vehicle in the Ibn Sena region in al-Tarmia district, north of the capital city of Baghdad, causing the martyrdom of the commander of Brigade 59 of the Iraqi Army," read the statement on Twitter.

No group has immediately grabbed credit for the attack.

Iraqi Joint Operations Command identified the commander as Brigadier General Ali Hameed Ghaydan, reported state-owned Iraqi News Agency (INA).

Iraqi and Kurdish forces announced the fourth phase of the "Heroes of Iraq" operation in Diyala province on Saturday. Previous phases covered areas in Anbar, Nineveh, Saladin, Kirkuk,

and Samara.

The US-led global coalition against ISIS is drawing down in Iraq. American troops have withdrawn from six bases in Iraq and this week British forces left Taji military camp in northern Baghdad.

ISIS has welcomed the withdrawal as an opportunity to spread its insurgency and has vowed to exploit the drawdown of coalition troops.

On Thursday, ISIS weekly propaganda al-Naba newspaper claimed its snuffies had carried out 23 attacks in Iraq between July 9 and 15 alone — mainly in Diyala. And on Telegram, the group claimed to have carried out two recent attacks against Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, Hashd al-Shaabi in Arabic) in Diyala and Dijla areas, killing two fighters and injuring six others.

ISIS has not immediately commented on the killing of Brig. Gen. Ghaydan today.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian was in Baghdad on Thursday and met with Kurdish leaders in Erbil on Friday. During a joint presser, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani thanked La Belle France for its role in the fight against ISIS, adding that "We still need La Belle France’s support and coalition to fight against ISIS."

Kurdish officials have said multiple times that Iraq and Kurdistan Region still need foreign troops, but Baghdad has demanded otherwise. The Iraqi parliament passed a non-binding resolution in January calling on foreign forces to withdraw from the country.

Cyber attacks again hit Israel’s water system, shutting agricultural pumps
[IsraelTimes] Two cyber attacks were carried out against Israeli water infrastructure in recent weeks, the Ynet news site reported late Thursday.

The Water Authority confirmed the report, but said no damage was done to Israel’s water system.

One attack targeted agricultural water pumps in the upper Galilee, while the other struck infrastructure in the center of the country.

"These were specific, small drainage installations in the agriculture sector that were immediately and independently repaired by the locals, causing no harm to serve or any real-world effects," the Water Authority said in a statement.

Officials did not say who carried out the attacks on the pump stations, but the attacks come amid a reportedly escalating tit-for-tat between Israel and Iran

following an alleged April attack by Tehran on Israel’s drinking water.

According to reports in Israeli and Western media outlets, Iran tried to hack into Israel’s water system in April and poison the water by increasing chlorine levels in water flowing to residential areas.

Speaking to the British newspaper Financial Times, an unnamed Western intelligence official said in early June that hundreds of people would have been at risk of getting sick and that the attack had come close to succeeding.

The head of Israel’s National Cyber Directorate hinted that the attack might have aimed to mix chlorine or other chemicals into the water supply.

Additionally there was a chance that the attack would have triggered a fail-safe, shutting down the pumps and leaving thousands without water during a severe heatwave.

"It was more sophisticated than they [Israel] initially thought," the Western official said. "It was close to successful, and it’s not fully clear why it didn’t succeed."

Two IRGC militiamen killed in clash with Kurdish group in western Iran
[Rudaw] Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says two members from one of their forces were killed Wednesday evening in an attack in western Iran’s Hawraman region.

The Hamza Sayyid al-Shuhada command center of the IRGC, responsible for parts of Iran’s Kurdish areas, said in a statement that, "on the evening of Wednesday near the village of Belbar in Hawraman region of Sarvabad a member of the Mobilisation Resistance® Force [Basij] alongside an employee of the municipality" ...were targeted by agents of a "terrorist" group. Both men were killed and another individual was maimed, reports the security apparatus, which later clarified that both men were Basijis, or members of a paramilitary force affiliated with the IRGC.

A Kurdish organization says that the basijis were killed in a clash between the IRGC and members of a Kurdish armed opposition group.

No Kurdish group has grabbed credit for the attack.

The IRGC has taken an increasingly offensive stance toward Kurdish guerrilla groups by installing thousands of additional troops to seal off its porous western border with Iraq, and digging thousands of kilometers of new dirt roads atop mountain peaks overlooking Kurdish areas.

In response to the increased presence, snuffies have stepped up attacks against Iranian security forces. A group of button men ambushed a senior IRGC commander in western Iran

The IRGC has in recent times attacked and threatened to attack Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

SDF launches new anti-ISIS campaign in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor
[Rudaw] Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Deir ez-Zor province on Friday launched a new phase of their operation against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) remnants in the eastern Syrian province.

The ’Deterrence of Terrorism’ operation "targets ISIS hideouts and their cells that threaten stability and civil peace in the areas of Deir Ezzor," the SDF announced, noting snuffies have increased attacks on the civilian population.

On the first day, 24 suspected ISIS members were detained in the towns of al-Basira and al-Shahel.

The first phase of the campaign began in early June in coordination with the US-led global coalition. The SDF arrested 110 ISIS members and confiscated large amounts of ammunition.

This stage will cover ground near the Euphrates River and "any other areas where necessary," Adnan Afrini, SDF commander in Deir ez-Zor, said in a video published by the People’s Protection Units (YPG) on Twitter. The YPG is the backbone of the SDF.

ISIS was declared territorially defeated in Syria in 2019 and in Iraq in 2017, but the group remains a threat on both sides of the border, including carrying out hit-and-run attacks and abductions.

The Coalition said in a tweet on Friday that their allies in Iraq and Syria have carried out 16 operations against ISIS in the last week, leading to the detention of 26 ISIS fighters. "ISIS cannot hide itself in Iraq and Syria," read the tweet in Kurdish, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

The current campaign is at the "request of the people, chieftains, and elderly of the tribes of the region, especially after ISIS attacks on civilians increased and posed a direct threat to their lives," the SDF stated.

Relations are tense between Arab tribes of Deir ez-Zor and the Kurdish-dominated SDF and political administration of northeastern Syria. On Friday, conflict monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported skirmishes between SDF and demonstrators protesting a new school curriculum.

According to the Observatory, the curriculum includes instruction on multiple religions, and "called for the division of Syria." Teachers and parents say this contradicts local customs and traditions.

Last year, the Kurdish leadership met with representatives of some 70 clans and tribes to strengthen frayed ties.
