Vive the resistance!
If you haven't seen it yet, read Lawrence Henry's "The Middle East War Nobody Knows". We tend to by-pass those accounts of Paleostinian "collaborators" being bumped off and their bodies mutilated by the mobs. But those are the Palestinians who think like we do, the ones we're trying to reach. They're the men and women who don't want to live in a dingy second-rate Arab dictatorship.
The word "collaborator" brings to mind Marshall Petain, the heady waters of Vichy and the Frenchies who snuggled up to the Germans during the Second World War. It raises visions of Vidkun Quisling and Seyss-Inquart. I think I'll start substituting the words "resistance fighter"; it has a better ring, and it's more descriptive, unless you're one of those who takes Paleostine Chronicle as truth.

#1  I wonder if these so-called "collaborators" questioned PA pilferage from the Euro-kitty. I seem to remember that during the "cleansing" of 1965 in Indonesia,Chinese holders of debt over native Indonesian were killed as "communists". The PA's chief table-cloth head should have hired Enron's accountants.

#2  "Accountant"? Hmmm... I don't think there's a word for that in Arabic, is there?

Samantha Runnion...
Mary Wehmmeier's covering the Samantha Runnion murder. The body found in the desert is that of the little girl, and the killer is seemingly on the run.

The suspect is a male Hispanic, 25-40 years old, thin black moustache and black hair — I know, that describes a considerable number of Hispanics, but it's all we have to go on to date. He's driving a light green 2-door vehicle, possibly a Honda or an Acura. Samantha was kidnapped from her yard in Stanton, California. Her body was found in Cleveland National Forest, in Riverside County, about 50 miles to the east.
The coppers think this fellow's a serial rapist and that he'll do it again — no surprise there. He could also be headed for the Mexican border. If you're in southern Cal, keep an eye out for the car; if the driver matches, even without the moustache, holler for the cops and don't take "we'll get back to you" for an answer.
FOLLOWUP:

"The body was found nude. At this point in time there is no obvious cause of death," Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona said, adding that the fact the body was easy to find indicated the killer was leaving a "calling card for future activity." Samantha's family said they moved from nearby Garden Grove to Stanton a year ago because they wanted a safer environment for their three children, one where they could play outside without fear.
Rat toad sonofabitching bastard perverted kid killer...
A $500,000 reward has been posted for information leading to the killer's apprehension. Anyone with information is urged to call telephone number 714-890-4280.
I hope somebody's a lot richer soon...

#2  Fred: The cops let it slip that she had been suffocated and sexually assulted. (Prob' raped and choked to death. A true pervert.

They are also suggesting the pervert may have bruises and scratches on him. My gut says he's running like hell somewhere he can blend in again like Arizona, New Mexico, Texas or over the border.

The $500,000 reward is being offered by the mother's employer.

Afghanistan
Cholera outbreak in Kabul
The World Health Organisation (WHO) and Afghan Ministry of Public Health have downplayed reports of a possible cholera outbreak - a waterborne infectious disease - in Kabul.“We don’t have a cholera outbreak, but we have an outbreak of diarrhoeal diseases,” spokeswoman for WHO, Loretta Hieber Girardet, told IRIN from Kabul.
Oh, well that's different...
WHO reported on Sunday that up to 6,000 people suffering from dehydration had been admitted to hospitals in the city, while three people had died from a severe lack of fluids. Cholera, which causes severe dehydration, spreads extremely rapidly among large populations, if preventive measures are not implemented quickly. Her comments follow media reports saying authorities and aid agencies were taking urgent measures to prevent a cholera epidemic in the capital after three people were diagnosed. “Only three cases of cholera does not indicate that there is an outbreak,” Khwaja Mir Azam Mehraban, Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister for Public Health said.

Axis of Evil
Khatami's brother warns of return of despotism...
"Return of despotism"? You mean it left for awhile?
Iran's main pro-reform party launched a strong attack on the country's powerful conservatives, warning against the "return of despotism and dictatorship" if changes were not allowed to succeed. Mohammad-Reza Khatami, secretary general of the Islamic Iran Participation Front (IIPF), accused the conservatives of trying to kill the reform process, and forecast the collapse of the Islamic regime if nothing was done to calm public fears. "If the reforms don't bear fruit, it will lead to a return and re-establishment of despotism and dictatorship" in Iran, Khatami, brother of moderate President Mohammad Khatami, told the party's third general assembly in Tehran.
We thought that had already happened. How hard is it to recognize a despotism when you're living in it?
Khatami accused the conservatives, whose control of the courts and other levers of power hampers the work of the pro-reform parliament and administration, of "resorting to all political and institutional means" to bring the "reform process to failure."
That's because despots don't want to give up power. They simply don't do it willingly. You'll just have to hang them all. But first, as the rabbit recipe sez, you gotta catch 'em...
"The conservatives are utilising state bodies for partisan aims and to widen the gap between the people and the regime," he said. "(They) are knowingly or unknowingly looking to create tension ... If nothing is done, the regime will face the threat of collapse," he warned, adding that the crisis was "growing with every day."
We've been watching with mixed sympathy and glee...
"We have two tendencies in our country: one which leans towards democracy, and another which denies it. The great error of the conservatives will be to burn their bridges with the people. If we reject democracy and ignore the people's will, there will be but two scenarios: dictatorship or anarchy, and the Participation Front is opposed to both."
I'm expecting the former, leading to the latter. Actually, they're already in the latter, as they've discovered they can't control their own country with their govenment because there are anarchistic parties which are above and/or beyond the reach of the government, even while having their own positions in it. The situation's kinda like that of the Soviet government — nominally the ones in charge — and the CPSU, which was actually in charge. In theory, one could be a member of the Soviet government without being a party member, though in practice it didn't work that way. In Iran, it does work that way; you can be a member of the government without being a theocrat. You just can't do anything without the theocrats' permission, while the theocrats can do many things without the government's permission, to include running a more effective terror machine than al-Qaeda.

#1  Is Khatami's remarks aimed at Reza Pahlavi, the son of the Shah? From what I've read, he's out preaching the cause of democracy and human rights. He claims to be a full convert to said cause and not just mouthing the words to regain power for the family (perish the thought!). I wonder if the mullahs have inside dope on how Sonny-boy's angling for a promotion and new housing is coming along.

#2  I took his remarks as being aimed squarely at the ayatollahs, not at Pahlavi.

Iran sez terror war should be a UN concern. Really.
Iran's national security chief Hassan Rowhani said any further anti-terror measures, notbaly against Iraq, should be headed by the United Nations. Rowhani insisted on the UN-led mission when asked a question on a possible US military attack against neighbouring Iraq. "The Islamic republic of Iran does not consider attacks and wars a solution to problems," he said Wednesday.
That's right. Maintaining and financing an extensive network of terrorist organizations is the solution to problems.
Iran "believes that if terrorism is to be fought seriously, then this fight should be headed by the United Nations," said the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) during talks with journalists in Tehran, state radio reported.
The most effective thing a state (possibly within a state) that drives terrorism can do to protect itself is to ensure that the fight against it is led by the most ineffectual organization possible. If there was any serious intent behind the periodic efforts of Iran to take control of the war against the machinery of terror out of American hands, they'd be pushing for the establishment of an international force with cross-border police powers — kind of like Interpol with teeth — to track down and arrest those controlling the operation. There ain't no sech critter, and there won't be, because Iran and Saudi Arabia would have too much to lose if there were.

Iran calls anti-US protests after Bush call for reform
Iran's Islamic regime Tuesday issued a televised appeal for mass protests against the United States after President George W. Bush vowed Washington would give its full support to a more modern, democratic regime in Tehran. State television called on people across the nation to gather before the main weekly Muslim prayers on Friday to protest against the interference by the "bellicose" Bush and "express their general hostility towards the United States."
"Excellency, the people have no jobs and they are muttering against the regime."
"Well, blame the Americans. That always works. Organize some demonstrations."
"Yes, Excellency."
"'Great Satan,' all that stuff..."
"Yes, Excellency."
"Have that preacher, whatsisname, Taheri? Have him say something."
"Excellency, Taheri quit. He said he couldn't stand it anymore."
"Well, have him flogged until he can."

Tehran ready to defend itself against US threats
Iran's national security chief warned the US Wednesday that Tehran would defend its territory, as the nation readied for nation-wide anti-US demonstrations Friday following President George W. Bush's recent "interventionist" statements. "If a danger is threatening the country, we must join hands and face it," Hassan Rohani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), told reporters in Tehran.
"Bring 'em on! We'll murdalize 'em! Bring 'em ooooon!"

Caucasus
Yet another jamaat takes form...
Karachaevo-Cherkessia is another flyspeck-sized "autonomous republic" within Russia, neighboring Georgia and not too far from Chechnya and Dagestan. The Cherkess are the smallest ethnic group in the republic, making up 11 percent of the population. The Karachays make up 30 percent and the Russians 40 percent. The Cherkess are first cousins to the Circassians; the Karachays are Turkic. The Karachay Muslims have (surprise!) united in the "Hizbu-At-Tawhid", and a Radio Kavkaz (Radio Caucasus) correspondent rushed breathlessly to meet with the amir of the Karachaevo "Jamaat," Dagir Bejiev.
Bejiev recently married a widow of a Shaheed, whose husband kicked it in Chechnya in 2000. He was fired up by his local imam, Ramazan Burlakov, the amir of a Madrasa — yep, they have them in the Caucasus, surprisingly enough; wonder who pays for them? — in Uchkeken, a town near Kislovodsk. "I would travel 30 kilometers out there," quoth Bejiev, "just to listen to his Friday Hutba (sermon). It was in 1997. Before that I was a complete jaheel (an ignorant person). Once I met that man, my destiny was determined. I secured a firm foothold in Islam."

Ramazan ran off to Chechnya with 150 mujahideen to fight jihad against the hated Russers. He and about thirty of his compatriots were waxed, but his legacy lives on: "Today over a thousand of the best sons of Karachai Nation are participating as much as it is within their capabilities in the process of revival of Islam, at their home as well as across the entire Caucasus. Ramzan was the initiator of this revival. Our march on the path of Islam is Jihad."

And why is this so? Because "Jihad is going on all around the world. This is an objective process that does not depend on the will or desire of the enemies of Islam, especially after the September 11. As far as Karachaevo-Cherkessia goes, as well as the entire Caucasus, it is the natural zone of Islamic interests... That’s why our Mujahideen are now in Chechnya."

Middle East
Egypt security plan for Gaza is back on...
Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot reported an Israeli pilot programme to ease restrictions on the Gaza Strip in exchange for an end to "terrorist" attacks there. The plan was put forward by Israeli Defence Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer Monday during his meeting in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who told him he supported the plan. "The Gaza Strip will be a test for the Palestinians," Yediot quoted Ben Eliezer as saying, adding that if the plan was successful, it would be applied to areas in the West Bank. The newspaper said Egypt had pledged its support to the programme and would send its intelligence chief Omar Soleiman to the Gaza Strip to contribute to its implementation and help restart negotiations between the two sides.
Egypt is pretty obviously wobbling on this issue, which lends credence to the idea that the Hamas-in-the-toaster story may be based in fact. It's not something to be undertaken lightly. Hosni probably can't figure out whether he wants to do it or not, because there are risks — and benefits — both ways...
The newspaper Haaretz said that under the plan Israeli troops would respond to a significant reduction in violence by pulling back to positions occupied before the Palestinian uprising broke out in September 2000. Egypt would help train and supervise Palestinian security forces, which would be unified under a single command, the newspaper said.
I'd be real happy to see Paleostinian "security forces" just go away completely. I'm still trying to figure out just what it is that they're "securing."

Israeli officer killed in firefight
An Israeli officer has been killed and three other soldiers wounded, one seriously, in a firefight with Palestinian gunmen suspected of staging a bus ambush in the West Bank, the army said. A military spokesman identified the dead officer as Lieutenant Elad Grindir, 21. A military source reported earlier one of the group of Palestinians suspected of involvement in yesterday's bus ambush was killed in the firefight that occurred around dawn.
RIP, Lieutenant...

Israel-Paleo talks off after bus attack...
Israel called off a high-level meeting with Palestinians scheduled for today after the ambush, whose victims included an eight-month-old girl, her father and grandmother. Israel blamed Mr Arafat for the attack at the entrance to the settlement of Emmanuel, which is located between the Palestinian towns of Nablus and Qalqiliya in the northern part of the West Bank.
That was intended by those who planned the attacks, too. Gotta get things back to normal, y'know...

Premature baby becomes eighth bus ambush fatality
A premature Israeli baby delivered by emergency Caesarean section after yesterday's ambush of a bus by Palestinian gunmen in the West Bank, died today. The baby boy, whose mother remains in a serious condition, was believed to be the youngest victim of more than 21 months of Middle East fighting. Hospital officials confirmed he was the eighth fatality following the attack.

Yasser's gonna run...
Yasser Arafat confirmed that he would be a candidate in January's Palestinian leadership elections, throwing down a gauntlet to US President George Bush. At the same time, Arafat's deputy in the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), Mahmud Abbas, who is more acceptable to critics of the Palestinian leadership, said he would not oppose him in the polls.
Mahmud woke up with a horse's head in his bed. Besides, he's got his retirement fund now...
Asked if he would run by an interviewer for Egyptian television, Arafat said, "Of course, if I am tasked by the Palestinian command (because) I am proud of our democracy."
Goddammit. There goes another keyboard...
It was the first time Arafat had said personally that he intended to run in the Palestinian presidential elections, which he is tipped to win, although aides have indicated this was his intention. Arafat also hit out at Bush, who called last month for Palestinians to change their leaders for ones not "compromised by terror" or lose US backing for their own state, in reference to Israel's charges that Arafat is deeply implicated in anti-Israeli attacks by Palestinian militant groups.
It's their choice. I'm sure they'll enjoy life behind the fence. Civilized people can come to see them now and then, tossing them peanuts and watching them explode...

Boomers kills six in Tel Aviv explosions...
At least six people were killed in two explosions Wednesday night near the old central bus station in south Tel Aviv. Magen David Adom officials said about 30 people were wounded. Police believe that two different suicide bombers carried out attacks at the scene. Police and Magen David Adom officials were at the scene of the blast. All streets in the area have been closed while police search the area for other explosive devices or suicide bombers and the wounded are evacuated. Tel Aviv Police Chief Yossi Sedbon said that police were checking a suspicious object in the area.
Bloodthirsty bastards.

Gaza weapons factory hit by missile
An Israel Air Force warplane slammed a missile into a factory near the Maghazi refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip on Wednesday. There were no immediate reports of casualties in the strike on the building which the Palestinian sources said was a foundry. Israel Radio quoted military officials as saying it served as a weapons factory for Hamas. An IAF fighter jet struck the house of a top militant in the Hamas group in southern Gaza earlier this week. IDF officials said the target was a bomb factory they said was hidden in the house. The militant escaped through a window moments before the missile hit.
