Former Bangladesh military dictator Ershad beyond all cares and woe at 89
[DAWN] Former Bangladesh military dictator Hussain Muhammad Ershad died on Sunday aged 89, after weeks in a Dhaka hospital, officials said.

General Ershad ruled Bangladesh for nearly a decade before being ousted from power in a pro-democracy upsurge in 1990 and was tossed in the slammer
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
for years on corruption charges.

He passed away due to complications from old age, Kazi Firoz Rashid, a longtime colleague and politician from his Jatiya Party
...aka Jatiya Front; a political party established by Bangladictator Lieutenant General Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 1986 to lend a veneer of respectability to his rule. Since nobody was amused he was forced to resign by popular demand in 1990. The party remains in existence with about a dozen seats in Bangla's parliament...
, told AFP. Armed forces front man Abdullah bin Zaid confirmed the death.

Ershad, who was also a prolific poet, was the head of the country's armed forces in 1982 when he took power in a bloodless coup after removing an elected government from power.

His rule was marked by a controversial decision to make Islam the state religion of the officially secular Moslem-majority nation.

In comments made to local news hounds from jail in 1996, he said that his "greatest failure [...] was running the country softly with a heart of a poet".

Despite the slew of cases against him, Ershad emerged as one of Bangladesh's major power brokers in the 1990s after his Jatiya Party became the country's third biggest political outfit.

Since his ouster at the hands of current Prime Minister the loathesome Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums...
and main opposition leader the loathesome Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
, the two women have become bitter rivals, with the government last year jailing Zia for a decade over graft charges.

Antifa Activist Identified as Man Armed with Rifle Who Tried to Set Fire to ICE Center
[PJMedia] The man who attacked the ICE center has now been identified as 69-year-old Willem Van Spronsen of Vashon Island, Washington.

Van Spronsen was described as "an anarchist and anti-fascist
...anybody who's not a leftist...
," according to Deb Bartley, a friend of his for about 20 years.

"He was ready to end it," Bartley stated. "I think this was a suicide. But then he was able to kind of do it in a way that spoke to his political beliefs. I know he went down there knowing he was going to die."

Van Spronsen has had a history of violence against the police.

Van Spronsen has previously worked as a self-employed carpenter and contractor. He was also a folk singer, performing on Vashon Island and around the Seattle area.

Antifa
...the armed wing of the Democratic Party...
and members of antifa, as well as anarchist groups, praised Van Spronsen after knowing of his death.
Skidmark posted a link yesterday to a Daily Mail article with a photo of the miscreant, taken while he was still alive and pontificating.

#1  I'd bet it was Bartley. Tired of the late night phone calls, tangential digressions, ramblings about dictators, surveillance, fascists... she must've egged him on.

"You know what you need ? A fatality. A body on the news. A brave man goes out there, tries to fight them. And the man gets shot. Outrage. Revolution.

"Yes, the Revolution... snigger[sly smile]... the Revolution needs you ! Go, Willem. Go !"
Just die, you bastard !

Afghanistan
Afghan forces likely will continue to clash with the Pakistani forces: Pentagon
[KhaamaPress] The U.S. Department of Defense has warned of continued clash between the Afghan and Pak forces along the Line of Durand.

Pentagon warned regarding the likely festivities in its latest reports titled Enhancing Security and Stability in Afghanistan.

The report said "The Afghanistan-Pakistain border region remains a sanctuary for various groups, including the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
and its component Haqqani Network (HQN), al-Qa’ida core (AQ), al-Qa’ida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
(LeT), Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP), ISIS-K, and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU)."

The report further added "Terrorist sanctuaries on both sides of the border present security challenges for Afghanistan and Pakistain and pose a threat to regional security and stability."

Furthermore, Pentagon said Afghan cops likely will continue to clash with Pak forces along the border.

The report also added that "This strains limited resources and heightens regional tensions. Senior leaders of both countries accuse the other of using their security agencies to support bully boy groups that launch cross border attacks."

Meanwhile,
...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Nunzio wondered: Where the hell was Chumbaloni? And where was his $600?...
Pentagon said despite an escalating border skirmish in early May 2019, President Ghani and Pakistain’s Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka The Great Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality problems...
were effectively able to de-escalate the situation peacefully.

Pentagon also added that Afghanistan faces multiple internal threats, each of which receives significant support from external actors.

According to Pentagon report, the primary threat to Afghan stability is the Taliban, which receives sanctuary and support from many external actors.

Turkey delivers military aid to Afghan forces worth $4.5 million
[KhaamaPress] The government of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
delivered military aid to the Afghan forces worth 4.5 million U.S. Dollars.

The Embassy of Turkey in Kabul said in a statement that the government of Turkey has delivered $4.5m worth of military aid to the Afghan forces as part of a bilateral agreement.

The statement further added that the aid will support the logistics operations of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces.

Furthermore, the statement added that the two countries signed a bilateral agreement in this regard on 21st of September last year.

This comes as Ankara ratified a motion last year to extend the deployment of Ottoman Turkish troops in Afghanistan for another two years as part of the NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants...

The legislation that was first passed by the Ottoman Turkish parliament in 2015 also grants the government authority to permit foreign army personnel to be transported to and from Afghanistan through Turkey, according to Turkey’s Yeni Safak News.

Afghan Air Force flew its first Black Hawk NVG resupply mission in March: Pentagon
[KhaamaPress] The Afghan Air Force flew its first Night Vision Goggle (NVG) resupply mission using UH-60A+ Black Hawk helicopter in the month of March.

The Department of Defense stated in its report ’Enhancing Security and Stability in Afghanistan’ that the Afghan Air Force UH-60 pilots receive basic UH-60 flying skills training through a the six-week Aircraft Qualification Training (AQT).

The report further added that upon graduation, pilots can attend Mission Qualification Training (MQT), a 10-week contractor-led, academic and flight instruction course that graduates pilots as mission-certified "co-pilots."

Furthermore, Pentagon said through accrual of flying time and certification, squadron leadership can certify pilots as aircraft commanders. The AAF has 53 qualified UH-60 pilots.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa spent the day shopping for new underwear. Tonight was going to be a special occasion...
Pentagon said the Afghan Air Force currently has the capability to support MD-530 operations (rearm and refuel only) at forward-deployed locations for short intervals without CLS presence.

According to Pentagon, the Afghan Air Force will continue to require CLS and supporting training contracts to maintain combat capability in the mid-term and long-term.

In the meantime, Pentagon said the Afghan Air Force plans to build MD-530 NVG combat capability by integrating NVG curriculum into advanced training courses to support flying point-to-point navigation sorties.

India has transferred 8 Mi-35 helicopters to Afghan Air Force: Pentagon
[KhaamaPress] The Department of Defense or Pentagon has confirmed that India has transferred 8 Mi-35 gunship helicopters to the Afghan Air Force.

Pentagon released its latest report titled ’Enhancing security and Stability in Afghanistan’, stating that India has transferred a total of eight Mi-35 helicopters to the Afghan Air Force, four during 2015/2016 and four more during 2018.

The report further adds that "This aid marks a significant departure from India’s previous policy of providing only non-lethal military assistance. Pak sensitivities towards Indian involvement in the country ultimately limited the assistance."

Furthermore, Pentagon said "Additionally, the Indian military provides procurement and training support to help professionalize the Afghan military and to improve its vehicle maintenance capabilities."

The report also added that India has traditionally had strong ties with Afghanistan and remains the largest regional donor to the country ($3 billion since 2001).

According to Pentagon Indian aid to Afghanistan focuses primarily on four main categories: humanitarian assistance, major infrastructure projects, small and community-based projects, and education and capacity development.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth ordered the space pirate fleet to attack Zemblonia...
Pentagon said India desires a stable Afghanistan that does not harbor holy warriors who could target Indian interests and does not have close ties with Pakistain.

In addition, Pentagon said there are no reports indicating that India has taken any serious action during the reporting period that would affect the situation in Afghanistan.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
Pentagon said in the 1990s, India supported the former Northern Alliance; and maintains contact with Afghan power brokers.

On the other hand, Pentagon said "In the event of a U.S. drawdown in Afghanistan, India likely will attempt to continue its support to Afghanistan and try to limit Taliban
...Arabic for students...
, Pak, and Chinese influence. A significant deterioration of security conditions in Afghanistan, however, may adversely affect the ability of India to provide aid."

#1  When our task forces in Afghanistan were shut down in '97 by weak willed and self absorbed administrations, the ISI ran amok from the NWFP along the northern hindukush for 10 years. Our policy with Afghanistan and Balochistan the fourth province of pakistain, and future independent state of the Baloch people was continued to be on the lines drawn arbitrarily for us by the inept, lazy R&AW an agency populated by political appointees from the police cadres superseding and often commandeering MI and foreign office resources and personnel, to largely no result. It was only after the proven ineptitude of the 'agents' whose work in the Registan periodically required taxpayer funded trips to Switzerland and Honolulu, that in 2002 the govt allowed the DIA to actively target ISI sponsored illicit trade and funding of the taliban, however once again, we were not to interfere with actual delivery of weapons, training grounds or recruitment. Meanwhile, the pakstain media went at the R&AW smearing it as a terror financing machine of mayhem, responsible for every blast and fatality in Afghanistan, that we were instigating revolt, we want their resources, we want to install a stooge in the democratic govt, we would rig the elections, we are assasinating mullahs left and right, blowing up mosques. Only those who've worked with us know what kind of demotivated imbeciles work foreign intelligence in India.

No Afghan actually believes the official Dawn and Tribune line. India is yugely popular with the citizens because of 1. The historic, cultural connect. 2. We never did them any wrong, despite our islamonausea and always support their desire for progressive reforms in society. It was said Indira Gandhi and Leonid Brezhnev had reached an understanding that New Delhi would educate the Afghans, promote progress in academia and provide an environment conducive to acceptance of socialism; while Moscow provides academics and doctrinaires for the eventual 'democracy' to come. Of course, that plan went to hell after '91. However, it left India and Afghanistan with strong civil society ties, cultural associations and exchanges. During this time, the Afghan people imbibed principles of working socialist democracy, the responsibilities of a Government and ideas of religious and scholastic liberty.

From early 2015, the Indian govt has invested moderately in infrastructure and education there, training engineers, agriculturists, funding schools, hosting their films, writers and artistes, etc. The US forces have actively protected and helped sustain these relations. Now, in the event of a pull out India would probably just step back and watch it all burn. far be it for India to lift a rifle, unless for posturing The situation in the sub-continent finally demands that we shed our 'India is a Dove of Peace' hubris and mobilize covert responses toward thwarting Pakistain's interference in negotiations of divvying up power in Afghanistan.

But of course, we won't.
It took 4 months for Turkey, which is already facing sanctions, to buy and receive their S400s from Russia. It took a year to negotiate the same trade for India, under no sanctions, and it'll take us another two to get even one system delivered.
I'm afraid one can only expect soft power support (in a rather non-committal sort of way) from allies like us.

German Magazine Under Fire For Promoting Anti-Jewish Conspiracy
First an anti-American scandal, now an anti-Jewish/anti-Israel one. Der Spiegel is batting 1.000 in the fake news category.
[Jpost] The weekly magazine Der Spiegel has been plunged into a further fact-checking crisis after a massive backlash over its weekend publication alleging that two small pro-Israel organizations are directing German Middle East policy, with echoes of an antisemitic conspiracy theory.

Uwe Becker, the commissioner to combat antisemitism in the state of Hesse, wrote on Twitter: "The Spiegel must officially apologize for practicing Israel-related antisemitism. The article contains all the stereotypes that constitute antisemitism and is an example of how deep these though patterns are in mainstream society."

A team of six Spiegel journalists wrote in a three-page article that two organizations based in Germany ‐ Values Initiative and The Middle East Peace Forum (Naffo) ‐ are, according to the magazine’s headline, "controlling German Middle East policy."

Production in Mexico has fallen pretty much every year since 2014. Mexico has enough reserves that with competent management and lack of government interference it could be pumping 4 MbD instead of the 1.8 MbD it is pumping now.

Iraq
Hundreds of Nineveh IDPs returned to home areas: Migration and Displacement ministry
[Rudaw] Iraq’s Ministry of Migration and Displacement announced the federal government-assisted return of hundreds of Iraqi IDPs to their home areas across the province of Nineveh, as the painstaking process of returning internally displaced persons (IDPs) who seek to travel home after years of violence continues.

In the past week, 423 IDPs were returned home from camps in the east and south of the city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
to their home areas across Nineveh province, the Ministry claimed in a statement released on Sunday. Of the returnees, 142 were from Khazir and Hasan Sham IDP camps in the Kurdistan Region, while 281 of the IDPs were from the Jadaa, Hamam Alil, and Southern Mosul Airport Track camps.

"The Ministry, in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport and the Joint Operations Command, dedicated buses to transport those IDPs who wish to return to their areas in Nineveh," the statement quoted Ali Abbas Jahagir as saying.

Trucks transporting the IDPs’ belongings, including furniture and electrical appliances, were also provided, he added.

Forming part of a longer term initiative in cooperation with the relevant authorities in the province to return IDPs home, Jahangir said, they returned to the Syrian border town of Baaj, Tel Afar, Tel Abta, al-Mihalabya, Hamidat, Northern Terminal, al-Nahrawan and Mosul’s city centre.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 1.7 million of a total 5.9 million IDPs in Iraq are still yet to return home after Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
swept through the north and west of Iraq in 2014, causing a civilian exodus from Nineveh and its neighbouring provinces.

Of internally displaced Mosul residents, around 300,000 are unable to return to their homes, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), two years after the city was declared liberated from ISIS.

Fierce urban warfare ravaged Mosul as the Iraqi Army fought to reclaim the city and its surrounding areas in 2017. Some 138,000 houses were damaged or destroyed, the NRC said, leaving swathes of the already devastated province uninhabitable.

The United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
Mine Action Service (UNMAS) warned in June that 70 percent of mines and other explosive hazards remain uncleared in Nineveh and other areas of Iraq ravaged by war with ISIS, preventing millions of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from returning home.

Reconstruction has in part been hindered by the embezzlement of federal funds by Nineveh government officials, with an Iraq Integrity Commission report published in April claiming that around $64 million was stolen by former governor Nineveh Nawfal Hamadi and other officials.

Mosul’s residents have also complained of a widespread lack of jobs and services after their return, despite a flurry of government and NGO initiatives attempting to tackle the lack of available opportunities.

Hamas fishing for intelligence on WhatsApp messaging service

border, did not agree to reveal anything and alerted his commanders.

Hamas has been increasing its efforts to obtain intelligence from Israeli troops stationed around the Gaza Strip.

Identifying themselves as Israelis, Hamas cyber operatives have been contacting the troops via the WhatsApp messaging service, sometime presenting information they have already managed to get on troop movements

The Hamas terror group has tried several times in the past few years to get sensitive information from soldiers in the border area using fake social media accounts and dating Apps or via Face Book using location tracking apps.

Most of these attempts have not been successful primarily due to an awareness in the IDF and a high level of alert but one effort in the past month was successful causing concern among military leadership.

A combat soldier serving with a paratrooper unit received a message on the WhatsApp messaging service from an unfamiliar number. The message was sent by a person who identified himself as a member of another unit requesting information including when the paratroopers were scheduled to leave the area.

When troops are replaced the number of incidents grows, such as the recent accidental killing of a Hamas operative Thursday in the northern Gaza Strip, an incident that involved the IDF admitting the shooting was a misunderstanding.

The departing troops are less alert on their final days in the field and the new arrivals are less familiar with the dangers.

The paratrooper who was approached via the App, refused to divulge anything despite being shown information that should not have been in the hands of anyone outside his unit. He alerted his commanders and an investigation into how this information came to be in the hands of Hamas was launched.

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit released a statement saying: " The IDF is aware of the enemy's activity and is following its efforts over social media. We call on all military and civilian personnel to act carefully and responsibly."

Fathi Hamad, a member of Hamas’s politburo who is considered a hard-liner and is known for his fiery rhetoric, made the statement in a speech at a protest in the border region between the Gazoo

Strip and Israel on Friday.

"Our patience has run out. We are on the verge of exploding. If this siege is not undone, we will explode in the face of our enemies, with God’s permission and glory. The explosion is not only going to be in Gaza but also in the [West] Bank and abroad, if God wills," Hamad said, referring to significant Israeli restrictions on the movement of people and goods between Israel and Gaza.

"But our brothers [in the diaspora] are still preparing. They are trying to prepare. They are warming up. A long time has passed with them warming up. All of you 7 million Paleostinians abroad, enough of the warming up. You have Jews everywhere and we must attack every Jew on the globe by way of slaughter and killing, if God permits. Enough of the warming up," he added.

A Hamas official in Gaza tried to distance the terror group from Hamad’s comments, insisting that they do not represent its official position.

"These are personal statements that do not represent Hamas. They are no more than emotional comments that he may have said because of the killing of one of our members," the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the Israeli press, told The Times of Israel. "Our problem is not with the Jews, but rather the occupation and the Zionist movement that is occupying Paleostine."

In his speech, Hamad also appeared to call on Paleostinians in the West Bank to stab Israelis.

"O, the people of the West Bank, until when will you be quiet?" he said. "We want knives to come out. Five shekels. How much does the neck of a Jew cost? Five shekels or less?"

Hamas officials have frequently encouraged and praised stabbing, shooting and ramming attacks in the West Bank and Israel.

In the past year, Hamad has made a number of incendiary comments against Israel.

Two more F-35s land in Israel, bringing number in arsenal to 16
[IsraelTimes] Two more F-35 fighter jets landed in Israel today, bringing the number of fifth-generation stealth aircraft that the military acknowledges having in its arsenal up to 16.

The first two F-35 jets landed in Israel in December 2016. Approximately a year later, the stealth fighter ‐ known in Israel as the Adir ‐ was declared operational, and several months later the head of the air force revealed that the aircraft had conducted bombing raids, making Israel the first country to acknowledge using the planes operationally.

"The capabilities of the Adir Squadron adds another tier to the operational and strategic abilities of the air force, which ensures the air force’s superiority in all its missions, namely the protection and safety of the State of Israel’s skies," the IDF says.

Israel has agreed to purchase at least 50 F-35 fighter jets from the US defense contractor Lockheed Martin. They will be delivered in batches of twos and threes over the next few years. Israel is the second country after the United States to receive the F-35 from Lockheed Martin and one of the few to be allowed to modify the state-of-the-art aircraft.

"The ongoing procurement of the Adir is another expression of the long-term military cooperation between Israel and the US, which continues to produce exceptional results in the process of strengthening and streamlining [the F-35]," the army says in a statement.
