A Dorchester woman who has already had three children taken from her lost a fourth to the state yesterday after her 3-month-old daughters neck was allegedly slashed by one of three homeless men she was partying with.
Prosecutors said Kyanna Davis, 24, knew Andrew Vaughn, 31, was known to carry a razor blade secreted in his mouth, yet allowed him to be alone in a bedroom with her infant daughter early yesterday morning after hed spent the night getting drunk and urinating on her furniture.
"This family felt bad for him," prosecutor Megan ORourke said of Vaughn, whod been living at 119 Maxwell St. for two days. They took him into their home. This was the end result.
The Department of Social Services took legal custody of Inaiza Davis, born April 7, even as she remained hospitalized in stable condition.
Vaughn was ordered held on $500,000 cash bail after pleading not guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and mayhem in the Dorchester Division of Boston Municipal Court. No weapon was found on him, however, Boston police seized pocket knives from two of Davis five guests.
The facts of this case are so brutal as to speak for themselves, said Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley.
The infants siblings, ages 6, 4 and 1, were turned over to relatives last year by DSS and their mothers case closed by the agency after Davis pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment of a child, was sentenced to six months and ordered to attend a program on mothering.
According to a DSS service plan that was in effect from June 13 to Dec. 13, 2006, on March 24, 2006, Davis abandoned another daughter, then 6 months old, on the porch of the childs father, Tyrone Jackson, unannounced and unsupervised.
DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro said the agency only learned yesterday Davis had given birth again.
Jackson, 31, has taken out multiple restraining orders against Davis in the past, alleging she threatened to hurt me or burn my house down, according to court documents.
Davis left court yesterday with tears streaming down her face, but is due to return on July 18 to face charges she scratched up Jacksons mothers car and flattened the tires.
Defense attorney Matthew Luz said Vaughn may have a problem controlling his liquor and his bladder, but hes no baby slasher.
He went to the bathroom, heard the baby crying and picked the baby up. Thats when the cuts were noticed, Luz said. Mr. Vaughn suggests that not only was he intoxicated, but there were six people present in the house and they were all intoxicated.
A convicted murderer and rapist was charged today with special circumstances murder for allegedly celebrating his 55th birthday on Sunday by stabbing his wife to death and also stabbing her sister and her sister's son.
Jesus Jihad, 55, is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in Alameda County Superior Court. Assistant District Attorney Tom Rogers said Jihad is charged with one count of murder for allegedly stabbing his wife, 35-year-old Aisha Hendricks 10 times and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly stabbing her sister Emma Bowers, and Bowers' 17-year-old son DeAnthony.
Rogers said he also charged Jihad with the special circumstance of multiple murder because Jihad was convicted in 1974 of murdering a man in Alameda in 1973. In addition, Jihad was convicted of rape and forcible oral copulation for a 1993 attack in Berkeley, Rogers said. Jihad could face the death penalty if he's convicted of special circumstances murder.
Rogers said witnesses say that Jihad laughed and smiled as he stabbed Hendricks several times shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday at the apartment they shared in the 2300 block of 92nd Avenue.
The prosecutor said Jihad is accused of then going to a downstairs apartment where he stabbed Bowers at least three times. When Hendricks yelled at him to stop stabbing Bowers, Jihad then stabbed Hendricks some more, Rogers said. He said Jihad stabbed Hendricks a total of 10 times.
Rogers said Bowers' son came back to the apartment complex when someone told him his mother was being attacked but Jihad then stabbed him in the face. He said Bowers and her son have been treated for their wounds and are expected to survive.

After reading the article, I have a little more sympathy for the guy - the crime occurred 31 years ago, he served his time. He would have been eligible to run if he had not circulated the petitions himself.
THE British Museum yesterday hailed a discovery within a clay tablet in its collection as a breakthrough for biblical archeology - proof of the accuracy of the Old Testament.
The cuneiform inscription in a tablet dating from 595BC has been deciphered for the first time - revealing a reference to an official at the court of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, that proves the historical existence of a figure mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah.
It is rare evidence in a non-biblical source of a real person, other than kings, featured in the Bible.

The tablet names a Babylonian officer called Nebo-Sarsekim who, according to Jeremiah 39 was present in 587BC when Nebuchadnezzar "marched against Jerusalem with his whole army and laid siege to it".
The cuneiform inscription records how Nebo-Sarsekim lavished a gift of gold on the Temple of Esangila in the fabled city of Babylon, where, at least in folk tradition, Nebuchadnezzar is credited with building the Hanging Gardens, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
British Museum staff are excited by the discovery.
Irving Finkel, assistant keeper in the Department of the Middle East, said: "A mundane commercial transaction takes its place as a primary witness to one of the turning points in Old Testament history.
"This is a tablet that deserves to be famous."
The discovery was made by Michael Jursa, associate professor at the University of Vienna, on a research trip to the museum.
"It's very exciting and very surprising," he said.
"Finding something like this tablet, where we see a person mentioned in the Bible making an everyday payment to the temple in Babylon and quoting the exact date, is quite extraordinary."
Since 1991, Dr Jursa has been visiting the museum to study a collection of more than 100,000 inscribed tablets - the world's largest holdings.
Cuneiform is the oldest known form of writing. During its 3000-year history, it was used to write about 15 languages, including Babylonian, Assyrian, Hittite and Urartian.
There are only a small number of scholars worldwide who can read cuneiform script.
One of them is Dr Jursa, who yesterday said the British Museum tablet was so well preserved that it took him just a couple of minutes to decipher.
This one - which is 5.5cm wide - was acquired by the British Museum in 1920, "but no one realised the connection," Dr Jursa said.
"They didn't really read it."
It was unearthed from the ancient city of Sippar, where there was a huge sun temple, about 2km from Baghdad.
On hearing of the discovery yesterday, Geza Vermes, the eminent emeritus professor of Jewish studies at the University of Oxford, said such a discovery revealed that "the Biblical story is not altogether invented".
"This will be interesting for religious people as much as historians," he said.
THE Iraqi port city of Basra, already prey to a nasty turf war between rival militia factions, has now been gripped by a scary rumour giant badgers are stalking the streets by night, eating humans.
The animals were allegedly released into the area by British forces.
Local farmers have caught and killed several of the beasts, but this has done nothing to dispel the rumour.
Iraqi scientists have attempted to calm things down. However, the story has spread like wildfire in the streets of the city and the villages round about.
Mushtaq Abdul-Mahdi, director of Basra's veterinary hospital, has inspected the corpses of several badgers and tries to reassure Iraqis that the animals are not a new post-war arrival in the region.
These animals appeared before the fall of the regime in 1986. They are known as Al-Ghirayri and locally as Al-Girta, he told AFP. Talk that this animal was brought by the British forces is incorrect and unscientific.
Not everybody is convinced.
I believe this animal appeared following a raid to the region by the British forces, said Ali Mohsen, a farmer in his 40s from Karmat Ali, near the air base used by the multinational force.
As we are close to the airport, they probably released this animal into the area.
British troops have been based in Basra since the 2003 US-led invasion overthrew dictator Saddam Hussein, and the 5500 that remain still face the threat of Shiite militias battling for the region's oil resources.
They also have to battle the Iraqi rumour mill, as locals are quick to blame them for almost any calamity that befalls the area including an apparent plague of vicious badgers with long claws and powerful jaws.
British army spokesman Major David Gell said the animals were thought to be a kind of honey badger melivora capensis which can be fierce but are not usually dangerous to humans unless provoked.
They are native to the region but rare in Iraq. They're nocturnal carnivores with a fearsome reputation, but they don't stalk humans and carry them back to their lair, he said.
Both the scientists and the soldiers agree that the badger ought not to be a danger to humans, but so far they have failed to reassure the populace.
I was sleeping at night when this strange animal hit me on my head. I have not seen such an animal before. My husband hurried to shoot it but it was as swift as a deer, Suad Hassan, a 30-year-old housewife said.
It is the size of a dog but his head is like a monkey. It runs so quickly.
Cell phone video of the badgers circulating in Basra shows a stocky skunk-like animal with long front claws.
The honey badger, or ratel, is known as a brave predator capable of killing a cobra. It weighs up to 14kg.
Sattar Jabbar, a 50-year-old local farmer from Abu Sakhar north of Basra, believes the badger can tackle even large prey.
I saw it three days ago at night attacking animals. It even ate a cow. It tore the cow up piece by piece. I tried to shoot it with my gun but it ran away into the orchards. I missed it, he said.

In attacks on larger targets, the honey badger will often target the scrotum, biting and not letting go, snarling and thrashing its' head about until the exhausted victim collapses.

Mrs Felix-Browne says she is aware that some people will be hostile to her marriage. Among the numerous terrorist plots linked to her new father-in-law are the London suicide bombings on July 7, 2005, the July 21 plot, and the recent attempted attacks in London and Glasgow. I just married the man I met and fell in love with to me he is just Omar, she said. I hope that people will take a step back and think what it was like when they fell in love. Living in exile in Sudan and then Afghanistan, he saw at first hand the creation of al-Qaeda and its techniques. Mrs Felix-Browne said: I never had any problem with his past. Omar did not do anything wrong. He was a child when he was in Afghanistan.
She said that her husband left Afghanistan before the attacks on the US on September 11, 2001. However, some reports claim that he split from his father only after the attack on New York and an argument about tactics.
Mrs Felix-Browne insisted: He last saw his father in 2000 when they were both in Afghanistan. He left his father because he did not feel it was right to fight or to be in an army. Omar was training to be a soldier and he was only 19.

During their conversations she refers to him repeatedly as Habibi, the Arabic for my love. She said: I find it very difficult to live without him and I know he does too. But really we have the most normal life possible.
She was aware before her marriage that her husband already had another wife and a two-year-old child. I havent seen her but I have spoken to her for about an hour on the telephone, she said. She is fine about it.
Mrs Felix-Browne was initially reluctant to discuss her new husband but news of their relationship inevitably began to leak out in Britain and the Middle East. I dont want any of my family distressed or upset by my actions, she said. I know that for everybody who likes me there will probably be a million enemies.
Now she hopes that Mr bin Laden will come to Britain. He would like to spend quite a bit of time here, she said. There is no reason why he should not come to live, but I dont think he would like the weather.
Mrs Felix-Browne said that the couple hoped to use their position to help to heal the wounds caused by her father-in-law. All we want is peace in this world and I will do all I can to promote it.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested for the attempted murder of a police officer. The suspect, a Kosovan national who was due to be deported from Sweden, slashed at the policewoman's throat with a sharp piece of glass.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the Migration Board's detention centre in Gävle. "Her injuries are not life-threatening," said police spokesman Hesam Akbari.
