53 migrants who died cleared inland checkpoint: US official
[AlAhram] The tractor-trailer at the centre of a human-smuggling attempt that left 53 people dead had passed through an inland U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint with migrants colonists inside the sweltering rig earlier in its journey, a U.S. official said Thursday. The truck went through the checkpoint on Interstate 35 located 26 miles (42 kilometers) northeast of the border city of Laredo, Texas.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
to discuss an ongoing investigation, said there were 73 people in the truck when it was discovered Monday in San Antonio, including the 53 who died. It was unclear if agents stopped the driver for questioning at the inland checkpoint or if the truck went through unimpeded.

Cyber
Info of over 300,000 Israelis leaked as Iranian hackers target travel booking sites
[IsraelTimes] Israel’s Privacy Protection Authority seizes servers of Gol Tours LTD, which operates the affected websites, after claiming owner failed to cooperate and address security breach.

Iranian hackers have recently hacked into a number of popular Israeli travel booking websites, managing to obtain the personal information of over 300,000 Israelis.

The incident occurred two weeks ago and was confirmed by Israel’s Privacy Protection Authority on Thursday evening.

The attack affected websites operated by Gol Tours LTD, a tourist company that owns over 20 travel booking websites.

The leaked information includes telephone numbers, addresses, dates and locations of booked vacations, and sensitive medical information, the authority said in a statement.

The affected websites reportedly include: hotel4u.co.il, booking-hotels.co.il, booking-kibbutz.co.il, mlonot.co.il, noapass.co.il, gol.co.il, funtoursisrael.co.il, ortal.net, come2israel.co.il, and come2israel.com.

The Privacy Protection Authority said it had immediately contacted the owner of Gol Tours LTD following the hack, in an effort to address the security flaws that the hackers took advantage of, but was met with a refusal to cooperate.

"The required changes were not made," the authority said, noting that it has launched an investigation into the incident.

The authority has also claimed, according to a report by Channel 12 news, that the owner of Gol Tours LTD refused to address the security breaches because it would have cost him money to do so.

The report added that the owner also ignored instructions provided by Israel’s National Cyber Directorate following the hack, meant to help the company bolster its security and avoid additional information being leaked to the hackers.

In an unprecedented move in Israel, authority officials raided on Thursday the company’s offices and seized its servers until the investigation is complete.

"In any case of failing to immediately report a serious security breach and not cooperating according to the guidelines, the authority will take decisive action to protect the personal information of the public, including effectively halting the company’s operations," the Privacy Protection Authority said in a statement.

The authority said it was hopeful the unusual measure taken in this case would serve as a warning to other website owners who may consider not reporting security breaches in the future.

Responding to the allegations, the owner of Gol Tours LTD rejected the claims and said the authority has treated him worse than the Iranian hackers ever did.

"I never said I wouldn’t upgrade [the company’s online security measures] because it would cost me money, never," he told Channel 12.

"The Iranians only took names and phone numbers from our site. We don’t hold credit card numbers in our system. The authority had sent us a faulty document and didn’t respond to our messages," he argued.

"We have one of the best security companies in the country," he continued, "Those who hacked our websites are the same ones who hacked the hospitals. We know how to deal with them, but we never imagined that we would be hurt by Israel more than by the Iranians."

The incident comes weeks after Israeli communications firms were instructed to bolster cybersecurity, as the government rolled out a new initiative to guard the country against online attacks amid an uptick in hacks targeting Israeli websites.

Under the reform, Israel’s major communications companies are required to implement detailed plans for identifying and preventing future cyberattacks targeting communication networks. The companies now need to adhere to unified standards.

Numerous suspected Iranian cyberattacks on Israel were reported in recent years.

In April, a group of pro-Iranian hackers grabbed credit for a DDoS cyberattack that temporarily took down the Israel Airports Authority’s website.

Last year, a ransomware cyberattack targeted the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Hadera, completely shutting down its computer system. A few days later, the National Cyber Directorate said it had thwarted a wave of attempted cyberattacks targeting additional Israeli hospitals and health centers.

In 2020, various Israeli websites that Iranian hackers targeted as part of Iran’s Quds Day, displayed a video simulating Israeli cities being bombed and messages threatening the destruction of the Jewish state.

According to data released by Cybersecurity firm VirusTotal in October last year, Israel was the country most affected by ransomware between January 2020 and October 2021.

They guy let the Iranians hack him? LOL.

He'd cooperate if he had nothing to hide but obviously failed to implement adequate cyber security. He'll no doubt pay for that failure with a loss in business.

The Grand Turk
Iranian plot in Turkey reportedly targeted Israel’s ex-consul to Istanbul
[IsraelTimes] Yossi Levi-Sfari and his partner named in Ottoman Turkish media as the targets of a foiled plan by Tehran to kidnap and murder them.

An Iranian plot to attack Israelis centered on targeting former Israel’s consul general to Istanbul Yossi Levi-Sfari, according to the Ottoman Turkish Sabah news outlet.

According to the report, the Iranian attackers were staying in the same hotel as Levi-Sfari and his partner, Ronny Goldberg, and planned to kidnap and then execute the two men.

The Hurriyet Ottoman Turkish site reported that the Mossad learned at the last minute that a handful of Iranian agents were staying in the hotel and worked together with local Ottoman Turkish authorities to foil the attack and whisk Levi-Sfari and Goldberg back to Israel.

The IHA news outlet said that seven of the eight Iranian nationals arrested as part of the plot appeared in a Ottoman Turkish courthouse on Thursday. The men were reportedly arrested with several pistols and silencers that were confiscated by Ottoman Turkish police.

News of the foiled plot first broke in Ottoman Turkish media a week ago, the same day that Foreign Minister Yair Lapid — who became prime minister on Friday — landed in Ankara for a diplomatic visit.

According to senior Israeli officials, significant intelligence had indicated that Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites....
was seeking to carry out attacks against Israeli tourists in the country to avenge a series of killings and strikes on Iranian military and nuclear targets that have been attributed to the Jewish state.

A security bigshot briefing Hebrew media earlier this month said that the Mossad and local counterparts thwarted three Iranian attacks targeting Israeli civilians in Istanbul in recent weeks.

The security official said Mossad intelligence had led Ottoman Turkish authorities to 10 members of an Iranian cell who were allegedly planning to kidnap and murder a former Israeli ambassador to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
and his partner.

In the wake of the arrests and Lapid’s visit, Israel on Tuesday lowered its security warning to Turkey to level 3, or moderate, after it had been at its highest level amid weeks of threats and warnings of imminent Israeli attacks.

The National Security Council warned that Iran’s motivation to carry out attacks remains high and that it assesses that "there are efforts to build infrastructure on the one hand and identify potential Israeli and Jewish targets on the other hand."

Turkey blocks access to Deutsche Well and Voice of America
[Rudaw] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
’s media watchdog has banned access to the Ottoman Turkish services of U.S. public service broadcaster Voice of America and German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, prompting criticism of censorship.

The Supreme Board of Radio and Television enforced a February decision requiring international media that air television content in Ottoman Turkish online to apply for a broadcast license. An Ankara court ruled to restrict access to the websites of the state-owned Deutsche Well and Voice of America late Thursday.

Neither website was available in Turkey on Friday. In a statement, Deutsche Welle said it did not comply with the licensing requirement because it "would have allowed the Ottoman Turkish government to censor editorial content."

Director general Peter Limbourg said this was explained in detail to the Ottoman Turkish radio and TV board, abbreviated as RTUK.

"For example, media licensed in Turkey are required to delete online content that RTUK interprets as inappropriate. This is simply unacceptable for an independent broadcaster. DW will take legal action against the blocking that has now taken place," Limbourg said.

In February, RTUK said it identified three websites without broadcast licenses, which also included the Ottoman Turkish services of Euronews. But Euronews said it argued that it did not broadcast live in Ottoman Turkish or air visual bulletins and was therefore exempt from the licensing requirements.

Voice of America noted in February that while licensing for TV and radio broadcasts is a norm because broadcast airwaves are finite resources, the internet does not have limited bandwidth.

"The only possible purpose of a licensing requirement for internet distribution is enabling censorship," VOA said in a statement. "Governments have a recognized responsibility to regulate the spectrum to ensure it is used in the broader public’s interest," it said.

State Department front man Ned Price tweeted when the licensing regulation emerged in February that the U.S. was concerned with RTUK’s "decision to expand government control over free press outlets."

In response, Ottoman Turkish Foreign Ministry front man Tanju Bilgic noted that the U.S. required to Turkey’s state English-language broadcaster, TRT World, to register as a foreign agent under a law intended for lobbyists and public relations firms working for foreign governments. TRT said it was newsgathering and reporting like any other international media.

"TRT abides by relevant regulations for its activities in the U.S. Is that censorship? We expect the same from @VoAOttoman Turkish and others," Bilgic tweeted.

Turkey was rated "Not Free" for 2021 on the Freedom of the Net index by Freedom House. Hundreds of thousands of domains and web addresses have been blocked.

Reporters Without Borders ranked Turkey at 149 out of 180 countries in its World Press Freedom Index, saying "all possible means are used to undermine critics," including stripping journalists of press cards, online censorship, lawsuits and arrests.

Man pleads guilty to selling pistol to Texas synagogue hostage-taker
[IsraelTimes] Henry Dwight Williams faces up to 10 years in US federal prison over sale of gun to Malik Faisal Akram, who took rabbi and three others hostage before being fatally shot by FBI
...Formerly one of the world's premier criminal investigation organizations, something for a nation to be proud of. Now it's a political arm of the Deep State oligarchy that is willing to trump up charges, suppress evidence, or take out insurance policies come election time...
.

A man who sold a pistol to a man who used it to hold four hostages inside a Texas synagogue before being fatally shot by the FBI early this year pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal gun crime, the US Department of Justice said.

Henry "Michael" Dwight Williams, 32, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, prosecutors said.

Williams sold Malik Faisal Akram the weapon Arkam used when he entered Congregation Beth Israel in the Dallas-area suburb of Colleyville on January 15 and held the synagogue’s rabbi and three others hostage, according to prosecutors.

Williams faces up to 10 years in federal prison.

A sentencing date has not been set.

Williams, who previously was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and attempted possession of a controlled substance, sold Akram a semi-automatic pistol on January 13. In plea papers, Williams admitted to possession of that firearm despite his prior conviction, prosecutors said.

Akram, a 44-year-old British citizen, held hostages while demanding the release of a federal prisoner.

The standoff ended after more than 10 hours when the temple’s rabbi threw a chair at Akram and fled with the other two remaining hostages just as an FBI tactical team was moving in.

None of the hostages were maimed.

Williams was arrested less than two weeks later.

Iraq
Iran, Iraq swap remains of 45 soldiers killed in war
“Mostly what we find are stray ears, lips, and belly buttons, but where there’s an actual body we do our best to return it.”
[Rudaw] Iraq and Iran
...Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979...
exchanged the remains of 45 soldiers who were victims of the devastating war fought between the two countries, a humanitarian organization said on Thursday.

The International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC) in Iraq said Iraq received the remains of nine soldiers found in Iranian territory, while Iran returned the remains of 36 soldiers with the support of ICRC.

The transfer took place at the Shalamcheh border crossing between the two countries, according to ICRC’s statement.

Iraq and Iran fought a devastating war more than three decades ago, from 1980 to 1988, during which around one million lives from each side were lost due to the conflict.

Tehran and Baghdad in 2008 signed an agreement under the ICRC auspices regarding the exchange of information and handing over remains of missing persons during the war. The remains of hundreds of soldiers have been returned since then.

"More than 30 years have passed since the end of the armed conflict between Iraq and Iran, and thousands of families are still unaware of the fate of their loved ones," ICRC stated, adding that it will continue to assist all parties by providing them with answers they need.

ICRC mentioned that the victims' names will be published by the Iraqi defense ministry, as with every exchange. The ministry has not published the names as of yet.

The remains of a Christian Iraqi soldier who died during the Iraq-Iran war were uncovered by a farmer in Erbil's Haji Omaran subdistrict last month and handed to his family, more than three decades after he was declared missing in action.

In February, a Kurdish soldier killed during the war had his body returned to his family after being missing in Iran for almost 35 years.

EU to renew funding for Palestinian group accused of backing terror
[IsraelTimes] al-Haq, a well-known Paleostinian civil society organization, saw EU support frozen in May 2021 following Israeli allegations of terror funding; probe found no evidence of fraud

The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
informed a Paleostinian civil society organization accused by Israel of terror funding that its suspended EU financial support would soon resume after an investigation by Brussels found no evidence of irregularities.

Brussels froze its funding for al-Haq in May 2021 after years of Israeli accusations that the group was controlled by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine, which is widely recognized as a terror group.

The European Commission’s anti-fraud unit — known by its French acronym OLAF — opened an investigation to assess whether or not EU funds were being transferred to the terror group. The probe was subsequently closed, meaning funding will resume, al-Haq was told.

"OLAF concluded that there is no suspicions of irregularities and/or fraud affecting EU funds in the implementation of [Al-Haq’s] EU funded project," the European Commission wrote in a letter to the organization on Tuesday.

A second source familiar with the matter confirmed on Friday that EU funding was being renewed and that the letter’s contents were genuine. The source spoke to The Times of Israel on condition of anonymity.

The European Union did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Al-Haq is one of the oldest Paleostinian rights groups operating in the West Bank and Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
. The organization was founded by lawyer Raja Shehadeh in 1979.

The group has been involved in filing reports with the International Criminal Court, which opened an investigation last year into possible war crimes in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza since 2014.

In late October, the Israeli Defense Ministry classified al-Haq and five other Paleostinian civil society organizations as terror groups. The designation meant that the organizations’ employees could be arrested and funding confiscated.

Israel’s decision to blacklist the six organizations, some of which received European funding, sparked international criticism. But Israeli officials doubled down on the claim, telling news hounds that the evidence behind the decision was "ironclad."

Brussels has not been convinced by the evidence Israel has shared. EU High Commission Josep Borrell said that Israel had yet to send definitive proof.

"We are asking for answers from the Israeli government, and we have not yet received convincing answers," Borrell said in a closed-door meeting of international donors to the Paleostinians in Oslo in late November

The six Paleostinian organizations in question — al-Haq, Addameer, the Union of Agricultural Work Committees, Defense for Children International — Paleostine, Bisan, and the Union of Paleostinian Women’s Committees — are prominent and well-established groups.

The PFLP, which avowedly seeks to destroy Israel, has a long history of violent mostly peaceful attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians. The United States, the European Union, and much of the international community classify it as a terrorist organization.

Israeli officials have pointed to previous convictions of high-ranking members of the nonprofits — including al-Haq director Shawan Jabarin — for belonging to the PFLP. The Paleostinian nonprofits strongly dispute the charges against them, accusing Israel of seeking to crack down on criticism of its policies.

Rights group says Palestinians torture detainees with impunity
[AnNahar] Paleostinian authorities in the West Bank and the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks.
Strip systematically torture critics in detention, a practice that could amount to crimes against humanity, an international rights group said Friday.

Human Rights Watch called in its report for donor countries to cut off funding to Paleostinian security forces that commit such crimes and urged the International Criminal Court to investigate.

The report alleged that Paleostinian security forces "use solitary confinement and beatings, including whipping their feet, and force detainees into painful stress positions for prolonged periods, including hoisting their arms behind their backs with cables or rope, to punish and intimidate critics and opponents and elicit confessions."

HRW's report comes a year after the death of Nizar Banat, an outspoken critic of the Paleostinian Authority, whose family says he died after security forces stormed his residence in the middle of the night and beat him with metal batons. His death sparked weeks of protests against the PA, which governs parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Paleostinian security forces violent mostly peacefully dispersed some of those protests..

Amnesia Amnesty International said last week that the Paleostinian Authority has failed to hold its security forces accountable for the death. Paleostinian authorities arrested 14 officers last summer and are trying them in a military court, but have taken no action against top commanders.

"More than a year after beating to death Nizar Banat, the Paleostinian Authority continues to arrest and torture critics and opponents," said Omar Shakir, Israel and Paleostine director at Human Rights Watch.

"Systematic abuse by the PA and Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", forms a critical part of the repression of the Paleostinian people."

The group listed Paleostinians who it said had been arbitrarily arrested in the aftermath of Banat's death.

HRW said security forces are not held to account for the alleged torture and that given their systematic nature over many years, the practice could amount to crimes against humanity.

Paleostine is part of the Convention Against Torture, which requires members to work to prevent torture.

The report also describes Israeli mistreatment and torture of Paleostinian detainees in the West Bank, saying that no indictments have been issued against Israeli security forces despite hundreds of complaints made over the last 20 years.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Report: Israel suggests Lebanon buy 'its share' in Qana field
[AnNahar] Israel has responded to Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. ...
’s latest proposal regarding sea border demarcation and its answer included a suggestion that Lebanon "buy Israel’s small share" in the Qana offshore field, informed sources said.

"Israel has welcomed the unified Lebanese stance, which does not mention Line 29 as a negotiations line, and it considered that this answer ends the disputed status of the Karish field file," the sources told al-Akhbar newspaper in remarks published Friday.

"Israel has not accepted Lebanon’s demand to get the entire Qana field, noting that negotiating over Line 23 means that Israel has a right and a share in the field, while acknowledging that Lebanon’s share in the field is bigger," the sources added.

In the regard, al-Akhbar reported that "the Americans, in consultation with the Israelis and European capitals," are saying that "as long as the Lebanese share is the bigger one, Lebanon should buy Israel’s share through a global firm that would assume the mission of (gas) extraction and perhaps selling."

Israel has also said that the indirect negotiations should continue through the U.S. mediator and not in Naqoura and that "the negotiations should now focus on how to address the common section of the Qana field."

Moreover, Israel has called on the international community to "deter" Lebanon and prevent it from "endorsing Hezbollah’s threats," the sources added.
